7 THE LAST GAME Dolphins 13, Chiefs 10 November 12, 2006 Dolphin Stadium 73,132 KANSAS CITY MIAMI The Chiefs fell into a 13-0 first-half hole one the road against the Miami Dolphins and couldn t pull themselves out. Despite battling to within three points midway through the fourth quarter, Kansas City couldn t finish the comeback, losing at Dolphin Stadium. The Chiefs struggled to get their defense off the field in the first half. The Dolphins ripped off drives of 13 and 12 plays early on, converting five of seven third downs on those two series. The Chiefs would eventually make the stop on both possessions, but not before Miami made a pair of field goals to take a 6-0 lead. While their defense couldn t get off the field, Kansas City s offense struggled mightily to stay on it in the first half. The Chiefs went three-and-out on their first five possessions, totaling just 26 yards on those five series. Miami would open up a 13-0 lead midway through the second quarter set up by a flea flicker from QB Joey Harrington to WR Chris Chambers. On the play, RB Ronnie Brown shoveled the ball back to Harrington who found Chambers down to the oneyard line. Brown then bulldozed into the end zone on the next play for the touchdown. Both teams exchanged missed field goals late in the first half to keep the margin at 13 points. First, Miami K Olindo Mare hit the upright on a 50-yard try. The Chiefs then put together their first prolonged drive, but stalled out at the Miami 30-yard line. From there, K Lawrence Tynes 48-yard field goal try was tipped by DE Jason Taylor keeping the score intact at The Chiefs put together their best drive of the day in the fourth quarter and finally lit up their half of the scoreboard. Starting from their own seven-yard line, Huard completed five first-down passes three of which went to TE Tony Gonzalez moving the team to the Miami nine-yard line. That was as deep as they would get, settling for a 27-yard field goal from Tynes to cut into the deficit at 13-3 with 11:00 remaining. A costly Miami turnover allowed the Chiefs to creep back into the game just minutes later. The Dolphins called for a double reverse and Brown fumbled the exchange to Chambers coming around the end. DE Jared Allen was in the perfect place to scoop up the loose ball at the Miami 40 and returned it the 20- yard line. From there Huard hit Gonzalez down to the two-yard line and RB Larry Johnson pounded it into the end zone for a touchdown. That score brought Kansas City within three points at with 7:14 remaining. After getting the stop they needed on defense, the Chiefs got the ball back at their own 14-yard line with 3:10 on the clock. On third-and-17 from his own seven-yard line, Huard picked up a 31-yard gain on a perfectly-placed pass to WR Eddie Kennison. Huard was then sacked on first down and threw an incompletion on second down. His third-down pass went for four yards to WR Dante Hall, bringing up fourth-and-12 from the KC 36. The do-or-die situation didn t go the Chiefs way as Huard s fourthdown pass attempt to WR Samie Parker was broken up over the middle. The Dolphins were able to kneel on the ball twice from there, putting the finishing touches on their win. DOLPHINS Mare, 40-yard field goal (13-58, 5:58). 12 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 27, Raiders 23 November 6, 2005 Arrowhead Stadium 79,033 OAKLAND KANSAS CITY Trailing by three points with the ball on the one-yard line and only five seconds left on the clock, Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil had to make one of the toughest calls in football. A chip-shot field goal would have sent the game to overtime, but instead Vermeil decided it would be all or nothing. Instead of playing for the tie, Vermeil put the ball in the hands of RB Larry Johnson who started in place of injured Priest Holmes. Johnson took the handoff and did his best impression of Holmes, leaping over the goal line and into the win column with his second TD of the day, capping a thrilling Chiefs win. After both teams got off to a slow start with five first-half field goals, the fourth quarter turned into a typically wild Raiders- Chiefs contest. The Chiefs took a 13-9 lead late in the third quarter when QB Trent Green hit FB Tony Richardson on a fouryard touchdown pass just inside the right pylon. Chiefs S Greg Wesley intercepted Raiders QB Kerry Collins on the ensuing drive to set up another Chiefs score, this time a 15-yard TD run from Johnson. Breaking two tackles, Johnson burst off-tackle left and ripped off 15 of his game-high 107 rushing yards to up the lead to 20-9 early in the fourth quarter. The Raiders wouldn t go away quietly as Collins steadily marched them on back-to-back touchdown drives to regain the lead. First, Collins found WR Jerry Porter on a four-yard score after a penalty-aided 71-yard drive. Then, trailing 20-15, Oakland churned out a 14-play scoring drive that consumed 6:22 off the clock. The drive featured four third-down conversions including the final one which resulted in a seven-yard WR Randy Moss TD catch. After a successful twopoint conversion run by RB LaMont Jordan, the stage was set for yet another dramatic Kansas City-Oakland finish. The Chiefs trailed the Raiders by a margin with 1:45 remaining. Green, who had missed two days of practice this week due to his father s death, led the Chiefs to one of the greatest comebacks of his career. Taking over at the KC 28-yard line, Green completed five passes, including a 36-yard checkdown to Johnson on the next-to-last play of the game. Johnson took the catch and tried to outrun the Raiders secondary to the end zone, but was tripped up just short of goal line. With 0:05 on the clock that left just one final yard and one final decision for the Chiefs. Despite playing without three injured starters Holmes, T Willie Roaf and CB Patrick Surtain and getting off to a slow start, the Chiefs used their defense to keep the game within striking distance. Kansas City held Oakland to just 263 total yards on the day and allowed Collins only 175 passing yards. CB Dewayne Washington, who got the start in place of Surtain, came up with numerous big plays and helped hold Moss to a single catch on the afternoon. GAME NOTES G Will Shields played in his 200th consecutive game, joining K Nick Lowery (212) and P Jerrel Wilson (203) as the only players in franchise history to own 200 or more regular season game appearances. QB Trent Green led the Chiefs to victory when tied or trailing in the fourth quarter for the 14th time since joining the club. RB Larry Johnson registered his fifth career 100-yard rushing game and his seventh career game with two or more TDs. RAIDERS Janikowski 32-yard field goal (4-4, 0:52).
