All game times are Central and subject to change THE GAME The fifth-seeded Samford women s basketball team will open the 2018 Southern Conference Tournament by taking on fourth-seeded Furman Thursday at 12:15 p.m. (CT) at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. Samford enters the game with a record of overall and 6-8 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs are coming off a loss to Chattanooga last Saturday. Furman currently has a record of overall and 7-7 in league play. The Paladins are coming off a win over Wofford last Saturday. THE SERIES Samford and Furman are meeting for the 22nd time, with the Bulldogs holding a 13-8 advantage in the series. The teams splt the regular-season series, with Furman winning the first meeting, 45-41, in Greenville, S.C. Samford took the meeting in Birmingham by a score of in overtime. THE LAST TIME OUT Samford fell at home to Chattanooga, on Senior Day last Saturday. Olivia Crozier led Samford with 15 points in the loss. Charity Brown had 14 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, while Hannah Nichols contributed 13 points and six rebounds. SAMFORD IN THE SOCON STATISTICS As a team, Samford currently leads the Southern Conference in three-pointers made per game (6.1). The Bulldogs also rank second in the league in assists per game (14.1) and defensive rebound percentage (.694). Samford ranks third in the league in free throw percentage (.726), scoring defense (61.8 ppg.) and assist/turnover ratio (0.9). Individually, Charity Brown ranks second in the Southern Conference in both assists per game (5.7) and assist/turnover ratio (1.9). Olivia Crozier ranks second in the league in field goal percentage (.543), while Hannah Nichols ranks second in defensive rebounds (6.1), third in rebounds (7.0), fourth in three-pointers made (1.9) and three-point percentage (.364). YOUNG PLAYERS STEP UP Four of Samford s top six scorers so far this season are either freshmen or sophomores. Senior Hannah Nichols leads the team in scoring (13.1), but sophomores Olivia Crozier (9.0), Charity Brown (8.1) and Samantha Fitzgerald (7.0) follow Nichols. Freshman Makaila Woolard (4.9) ranks sixth on the team, following junior Cassidy Williams (5.8).

CLIMBING THE CHARTS Hannah Nichols recently set the school record for 3-pointers attempted with 660. She also ranks second in school history in 3-pointers made (245). She ranks fourth in SU history in scoring (1,433), field goals made (506), field goals attempted (1,184) and blocks (82). She ranks fifth in rebounding (547). NICHOLS ENTERS EXCLUSIVE CLUB Samford senior guard Hannah Nichols recently entered an exclusive club in the history of Samford women s basketball. Nichols is just the third player in program history to have at least 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in their Samford careers. She now has 1,433 career points and 547 career rebounds. The other two Samford players to accomplish the feat were Savannah Hill ( ) and Alex Munday ( ). SAMFORD S 1, CLUB MEMBERS PLAYER (YEARS) PTS. REBS. The Bulldogs came back from 21 points down to defeat Troy on Dec. 17 in the Pete Hanna Center. Samford then overcame a 16-point deficit to down Troy, in overtime on Dec. 22 in a tournament in New Orleans. In the team s home-court win over Wofford, the Bulldogs overcame an 11-point deficit to earn the win.

Hannah Nichols led Samford with 15 points and six rebounds in the win. Makaila Woolard added 11 points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs. Furman was led by Cierra Carter with 19 points. 9 MIKE MORRIS HEAD COACH Since taking over as the second head coach of Samford women s basketball in 2002, Mike Morris has taken the program to new heights. Over the last 12 years, the Bulldogs have posted eight of the top-nine win totals in school history, including the program s only seven 20-win seasons. Morris guided the program to back-to-back Southern Conference Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and The team reached a national postseason tournament for the three years in a row, including a WNIT appearance in The team posted Morris seventh 20-win season, finishing the year with a mark of and reaching the semfinals of the SoCon Tournament. The Bulldogs set a school record for wins with a 25-8 record, winning the SoCon Tournament and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time. Despite losing two of the top players in program history, the team won 20 games again, and won its second-straight SoCon title and NCAA Tournament berth. The team reached the finals of the Southern Conference Tournament for the first time and earned the program s first-ever national postseason appearance. The team also earned its first national postseason win with a win over Ole Miss in the first round of the WNIT at the Pete Hanna Center. The team also tied the then-school record for wins with a overall record and a 14-6 mark in SoCon play. In , the Bulldogs set a school record for conference wins with a 16-4 league record in their first year in the SoCon. The team finished with an overall record of 22-7, reaching the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament. After the season, Morris was named the 2009 SoCon Coach of the Year. The award marked the second Coach of the Year award for Morris, as he was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year in The Bulldogs set a then-school record for most wins in a season, posting a 23-9 overall record and a 15-5 record in the OVC. The Bulldogs also posted their first-ever wins over Southeastern Conference (Alabama) and Big 12 (Missouri) opponents, and reached the semifinals of the OVC Tournament for a third year in a row. The season was another winning one with a record of and another trip to the OVC semifinals. In the season, Samford posted its first 20-win season, finishing with a 21-8 overall record, and the Bulldogs were 15-5 in OVC play. For the first time since joining the league in 2003, the team reached the semi finals of the OVC Tournament. Morris has increased the team s win total in seven of his 12 seasons as head coach. In his first season ( ), the team won seven games, up from three the previous season. In his second season ( ), the Bulldogs posted 10 wins, only the second time in school history that the team managed double-digit wins. The squad won 13 games, and the team won 21 games. In , the Bulldogs won a then-record 23 games, up from 18 in The team also won 23 games and the team won a school-record 25 contests. Morris is in his 21st season overall at Samford, spending eight seasons as an assistant coach on the men s staff. While working with the men s team, Morris served as the team s top recruiter and directed Samford s summer basketball camps. He was on the bench for both Samford Atlantic Sun Championship seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances. Before his arrival at Samford in 1994, Morris served for three years as an assistant coach under veteran coach Lenny Acuff at Belhaven College. He coached at Belhaven for two seasons before joining Acuff s staff in 1993 at Berry College in Rome, Ga. In his first year at Belhaven, the Blazers finished with the most wins in nine years, compiling a record. The next year, Belhaven went and hosted the first round of the NAIA District Playoffs for the first time in 20 years. Morris played basketball for two seasons at the University of Alabama in Huntsville [UAH], where he was chosen team captain and team MVP his senior season. While at UAH, Morris was the NCAA Division II national champion in free-throw percentage, making 92.1 percent from the line. He played his first two seasons at Jefferson State Junior College in Birmingham. The Holly Pond, Ala., native earned a B.A. in psychology from Belhaven College in He has completed 24 hours toward his master s degree in administration from Jacksonville State. Morris is married to the former Melanie Nix of Huntsville, Ala. They have a son, Peyton, 24, and a daughter, Paige, 21.
