5 Game Reports TASMANIA 58 def. by WA METRO 81 The opening match-up of the day saw WA Metro get off to a fast start as Roosevelt Williams scored five quick points. Reyne Smith answered with a deep three to keep Tasmania close but WA Metro began to pull away as the game wore on. Taran Armstrong also impressed for Tasmania, finishing with 25 points but Williams top-scored for WA Metro with 24 as they ran out victors. ACT 47 def. by SA COUNTRY 68 SA Country did not hold back in their opening game, holding ACT scoreless for the first six minutes before carrying a 15-point lead into half-time. Even with the efforts of Natasha Lyalls (14 points) and Keeley Dunbars (nine boards), SA Country were too strong and led by Emily Close s 17 points while Montana Briggs and Emily O Driscoll dominated the glass. QUEENSLAND NORTH 49 def. by VICTORIA COUNTRY 66 Owning the offensive rebounds early gave Vic Country the momentum in this contest and they led by double-digits at the end of the first term. Qld North fought back after the first break and kept Vic Country honest with some impressive play at both ends of the floor courtesy of Shaneice Swain (14 points) and Jameelie Cleland but the overall team effort of Vic Country got them the win Piper Dunlop (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Karli Bruce (ten points, ten boards) both had double-doubles while Jade Melbourne finished with nine points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Boys Pool B QUEENSLAND NORTH 94 def. WA COUNTRY 53 Queensland North went straight into a fast transition game which saw them hit the scoreboard early but foul trouble allowed WA Country to settle down and connect from the free-throw line. Joel Burton matched their defensive intensity with two big blocks but Qld North ensured they were not going to give up their lead in the second half as Khobie Redgard excited the crowd with some impressive moves to the basket. NSW COUNTRY 36 def. by VICTORIA METRO 57 A basket-for-basket affair started this contest before NSW Country gained the ascendancy to own a seven-point lead at quarter-time. The Vic Metro coaching staff made some adjustments though and they soon ate into the lead by connecting from close range as well as tightening up their defence. NSW Country held strong for as long as they could but were eventually overrun by Gemma Potter who recorded 30 points, ten rebounds and three assists. 6 Game Reports NORTHERN TERRRITORY 42 def. by NSW METRO 110 NT s William Burton had some great drives to the basket in this game, scoring 11 points while Zeb Hamilton showed he will be a handful in the paint with 12 points and ten rebounds but it was not enough to stop NSW Metro who led from the opening tip and got contributions from their entire roster in an impressive Day 1 victory. NEW ZEALAND 42 def. by NSW METRO 68 Both teams had a solid first half and while NSW Metro held a slim advantage, they would not have been comfortable. Waiata Jennings ran the transition game with aplomb and Jessica Moors finished with 15 rebounds but with Kitty Henderson being kept relatively quiet, NSW Metro could not shake NZ. That all changed in the second half though as NSW Metro took full control before Henderson finished with 20 points and seven boards in an ominous start for her tournament. Boys Pool B SA METRO 67 def. by NSW COUNTRY 72 This was an intense defensive battle from the start and both teams were up for the fight with just a one-point edge being the difference at quarter time. NSW Country gained some breathing room in the second term, pushing the lead to eight as Henry Johnson wowed the crowd with a crossover jump shot. Sebastian Griffin scored 15 points to give SA Metro some life but Ryan Baths answered with 17 and Zak Simmons had a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double to hand NSW Country the slim win. VICTORIA METRO 116 def. SA COUNTRY 61 SA Country s Riley Smelt sent a warning to the favourites with two three s early in this contest but once Vic Metro were able to tighten their defence, there was no looking back. Leyi Adebayo showcased his athleticism on several highlight plays and every Vic Metro player hit the scoreboard including six players in double-figures as they became just the second team for Day 1 to crack the century. Boys Pool B VICTORIA COUNTRY 65 def. by NEW ZEALAND 89 The first half of the game was a very even contest as Jordan Michel contributed two three-pointers for Vic Country and Dyson Daniels provided a spark off the bench but NZ had Mac Stodart and Ezra Vaigafa to keep them in the game, courtesy of their transition and great defence. Stodart s trap defence was especially strong and eventually the scoring dried up for Vic Country while Reihana Topia had 11 points and ten rebounds and Harrison Payne top-scored with 23. 7 Game Reports WA COUNTRY 71 def. by SA METRO 86 SA Metro set the tone with their defence in this contest and while WA Country were able to answer after a few minutes, the lead had already ballooned to double-digits. The strength of Kelsey Rees (16 points, 11 boards) under the basket maintained SA Metro s advantage and after they held off a surge in the third term from WA Country, they ran out winners. TASMANIA 76 def. by QUEENSLAND SOUTH 81 Sharn Hayward from Tasmania got the ball rolling in this game with a three-pointer and her offensive production continued throughout, adding another 17 by the final siren. Free-throws played a role for both clubs but after Qld South gained the ascendancy in the first term, they never looked back despite Tasmania remaining hot on their heels, thanks to Grace Ellis 21 points and 14 rebounds as well as the cool head of Chynelle Marama (13 points, ten rebounds, five assists). SA COUNTRY 69 def. by WA METRO 78 Nerves played their part in the first term and turnovers were rife for both teams but Ruby Hamilton was able to give WA a fivepoint lead at half-time. Emily Close turned that around in the third period though with fouls and turnovers proving an issue for WA Metro. The lead then changed hands several times down the stretch but a couple of clutch jumpers and conversion from the free-throw line gave WA Metro what is sure to be a confidence building victory. QUEENSLAND SOUTH 98 def. TASMANIA 77 Queensland South used their height and size to claim this win over Tasmania although Taran Armstrong had his fair share of highlights for the team from the Apple Isle, finishing with 20 points and nine assists. The strength of Blake Jones (13 points, 12 rebounds) and Riley Curtis (18 points, four boards) is sure to carry Qld South deep into this tournament. WA COUNTRY 79 def. ACT 60 WA Country came out on fire offensively and jumped ACT who looked a little stagnant at both ends of the court. With support from the girls teams, ACT responded in the second term though as Charlie Mellick and Harrison Matthew trimmed the margin. Ishigami Sims had the answers for WA Country to push the lead back out beyond 20 and while ACT again closed within 12 in the third quarter, they could never get closer as WA Country secured the win. GAME REPORTS NORTHERN TERRITORY 40 def. by QUEENSLAND NORTH 84 The defensive pressure that Queensland was able to apply resulted in easy transition buckets and they were all over the NT team who fought hard despite the score-line getting away from them. A barrage of Qld North three-pointers set up the victory and will surely bother future opponents if they can continue to shoot in a similar manner.
