This will be only the third meeting between the two schools in six seasons as Big Sky members. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. CT and will be broadcast by the Big Sky s new television partner: Eleven Sports. The teams split their two previous Big Sky meetings, but the Aggies took three of four when both were transitioning to the Division I level and were Great West Conference members ( ). The only meeting during both program s Division II era was a 2001 National Semifinal in Grand Forks that UND claimed UND would go onto win its only DII National Championship the next week with a victory over Grand Valley State. The UND coaching staff will be wearing special Coach To Cure MD patches on the sidelines for the matchup with the Aggies. The patches will be worn to help bring awareness and raise money for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Over the last nine years, Coach To Cure MD has raised more than $1.5 million. Donations are currently being accepted at UND s loss to Montana State snapped an 11-game Big Sky winning streak and seven-game regular season winning streak at the Alerus Center. The setback also dropped UND to 3-3 in Big Sky openers. The Fighting Hawks also dropped out of both the STATS FCS poll and FCS Coaches poll for the first time this season. UND is receiving votes in both polls after getting 218 in the STATS poll (27th most) and 21 in the coaches poll (30th). Senior Jake Disterhaupt scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 37-yard interception return in the second quarter vs. MSU. It was Disterhaupt s second career INT and marked the 19th defensive touchdown for UND since moving to the Division I level prior to the 2008 season (13 have come on interceptions). With his 34-yard touchdown run in the third quarter vs. MSU, junior Brady Oliveira has now accounted for at least one score in the last nine Big Sky games. The 34-yard scoring run was the longest of the season by a Fighting Hawk. Senior Charles Flowers (17) dives to make one of his eight tackles in the loss to Motnana State last Saturday. Flowers, a Chino Hills native, is one of two Californians making the return trip to their home state to take on UC Davis. 3 LAST TIME OUT: MONTANA STATE 49, (17/19) UND 21 For the second straight week, UND could not get any rhythm going early, digging itself a big hole. This time visiting Montana State built a 21-0 advantage before the Fighting Hawks got a defensive touchdown thanks to a 37-yard interception return by Jake Disterhaupt. UND pulled with thanks to a 34-yard touchdown run by Brady Oliveira and two-point conversion catch from Noah Wanzek, but the Bobcats would not allow the home team to get any closer en route to a victory in the Big Sky opener for both schools. UND returns to the Alerus Center on Oct. 7 for its Homecoming tilt against Northern Colorado. Kickoff against the Bears is set for 2:30 p.m. CT. UND owns a all-time record in Homecoming games following the win over Southern Utah in the 2016 affair. ATTENDANCE SPIKE With 12,342 on hand to watch the Montana State game, the Fighting Hawks drew crowds of 12,000-plus in back-to-back games for the first time since the Alerus Center opened in Saturday s attendance figure also marked the first sellout since the 2009 season opener against South Dakota (12,431). Back in the inaugural season of UND s indoor stadium, the NDSU game drew a single-game attendance record of 13,500 (Oct. 6) that still stands and two weeks later, 12,580 watched the UND-Omaha game (Oct. 20). GOING BACK TO CALI This will be the 11th time UND has played on California soil since joining the Division I ranks prior to the 2008 season. The Fighting Hawks own a 4-6 record in those contests, including back-toback wins in which they have outscored their opponents in the last two trips to the Golden State (45-21 at Cal Poly; 11/21/15 and 41-6; Oct. 8). There are three Californians on the current roster and two of them should have an impact come Saturday against the Aggies. Safeties Chuck Flowers (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Tamas Stewart (Rialto, Calif.) combined for 18 tackles in last Saturday s loss to Montana State. Flowers has started all four games and ranks second on the team with 30 tackles, while Stewart has come off the bench in all four contests and ranks sixth on the team with 18 tackles. The JUCO-transfer had a career-high 10 of those against the Bobcats in the most extensive action of his brief UND career. NICE ADJUSTMENT Senior Jake Disterhaupt made the move to inside linebacker before the start of the season and the captain seems to be adjusting well to his new role. The former outside backer has three double-digit tackle performances to his credit and is coming off his second-straight game with 13 stops. He leads the team with 41 total tackles and also added a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown in the loss to Montana State (Sept. 23). The interception was the second for Disterhaupt and the fifth pick six by a UND defender in the past 15 games. Defensive backs Deion Harris and Andre Randolph were both lost for the season before it even started, while sophomore linebacker Donnell Rodgers (Missouri State; Sept. 23), senior wide receiver Josh Seibel (fall camp), junior wide receiver Luke Stanley (preseason) and junior offensive lineman Demon Taylor (Missouri State; Sept. 9) are all out indefinitely. Six more are considered questionable for this Saturday s game at UC Davis and five of them all have at least one start under their belts in 2017 (offensive lineman Mat Cox; 3, cornerback Evan Holm; 3, linebacker Cam Hunt, fullback Kyle Norberg; 1, safety Cole Reyes; 4 and offensive lineman A.J. Stockwell; 3). Hunt redshirted a season ago and the inside linebacker gradually worked his way back onto the practice field this past week for the first time since last fall. The second quarter has been the most fruitful, however, as the Fighting Hawks have racked up nearly half of their 78 total points this season in the quarter before halftime. He ended up making his collegiate debut vs. Missouri State, catching one pass for seven yards and adding a five-yard rush. UND DEBUTS Ten more Fighting Hawks joined Blubaugh and Shannon in making their UND debuts against the Utes. Redshirt freshman Ryan Tobin, was the only one among that dozen to garner a start as he debuted at left guard. The remaining nine players to make UND debuts were outside linebacker Jaxson Turner, safety Tamas Stewart, running back James Johannesson, tight end Hunter Pinke, outside linebacker Ray Haas, outside linebacker Andre Steiger, inside linebacker Corby Richman, offensive lineman Nathan Nguon and tight end Logan Alm. Besides Izzy Adeoti, several other Fighting Hawks made their debuts in the green and white. Redshirt freshmen Noah Mortel and Sean Russo both got reps along the offensive line, while linebacker Jake Rastas made three tackles and was credited with a half-a-sack vs. the Bears.

5 FIRST-TIME STARTERS Four defenders joined Tobin in making their first career starts in Salt Lake City. Junior Austin Cieslak started at defensive end and picked up a TFL on the first play of the game. Jade Lawrence (outside) and Donnell Rodgers (inside) garnered starts at linebacker and Evan Holm started at cornerback. Lawrence finished with a career-high seven tackles, including a team-best two for a loss. Rodgers added four tackles and a sack, while Holm had a career-high eight tackles and corralled the second interception of his career against the Utes. Redshirt freshman Jake Rastas added his name to the list of firsttime starters this season against South Dakota (Sept. 16). Rastas was one of three Fighting Hawks to post double-figure tackles in the game, finishing with 11 against the Coyotes. Classmate Noah Mortel earned his first start a week later in the Big Sky opener vs. Montana State (Sept. 23). He played all the offensive snaps at left tackle against the Bobcats. POTATO BOWL USA HISTORY The Potato Bowl was created in 1965 by then UND Athletics Director Len Marti, head coach Marv Helling, assistant football coach Jerry Olson and sports information director Lee Bohnet. UND blanked Idaho State 41-0 in the first Potato Bowl game back in 1966 and posted their seventh overall shutout in the 52 years of the contest thanks to a 34-0 victory over Missouri State in this year s Potato Bowl. The Fighting Hawks now own a all-time Potato Bowl record. The double-overtime victory over South Dakota in the 2016 Potato Bowl marked the first overtime affair in the event. The Fighting Hawks erased a 20-point deficit in the final 18 minutes of 2017 BIG SKY/MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL CHALLENGE Big Sky and Missouri Valley Football Conference officials have formed a Challenge Series between the leagues that begins this weekend. The UND- Missouri State matchup is one of five between BSC and MVFC foes this Saturday and eight overall this season. The Fighting Hawks are in two of those and all eight feature at least one team that was ranked in the STATS FCS Preseason Top 25 poll. These two teams have faced off 83 times dating back to the MVFC s formation back in Thirty of those have been in the FCS Playoffs. The MVFC has won 50 of those contests, but the teams split eight meetings a season ago. UND has won four-consecutive Potato Bowls and 21 of the last 24 games dating back to CAPTAINS The North Dakota football team will have two repeat captains in 2017 in seniors Cole Reyes and Keaton Studsrud. That duo will be flanked by clasmmate Jake Disterhaupt and junior running back John Santiago to form head coach Bubba Schweigert s quaret of captains this season. PRESEASON PUB Besides appearing in the national polls, the North Dakota football team has also seen several of its players receive preseason accolades from various media outlets and organizations. Senior safety Cole Reyes and junior running back John Santiago each found their names on multiple Preseason All-America teams. Reyes was named to the STATS FCS and Athlon Sports Preseason All-American First Team. He was also named the Big Sky Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and landed on the Preseason All-Big Sky Team. Santiago was pegged to the same two Preseason All-America squads as a kick returner and was a unanimous selection on the Preseason All-Big Sky Team at running back. Reyes and Santiago were joined on the Preseason All-Big Sky Team by cornerback Deion Harris, running back Brady Oliveira and offensive guard Demon Taylor. CHART TOPPERS A year after sharing its first Big Sky Conference title, the North Dakota football team was picked to repeat as the league champions in both the media and coaches polls released in July at the Big Sky Kickoff in Park City, Utah. Entering its sixth and final season as a league member, this marks the first time the Fighting Hawks garnered the top spot in either preseason poll. UND was picked to finish fourth by the media and fifth by the coaches last season before going on to post a unblemished 8-0 record in league play and share the regular season title with Eastern Washington. The unit yielded just 91.3 ypg (6th in the FCS) on the ground and gave up a season-low six yards to Northern Colorado (21 carries) in a win over the Bears (Nov. 5). Former inside linebacker Dylan Bakker led the team with 98 tackles and was a secondteam, All Big Sky honoree. In the win over the league s top rushing attack in Cal Poly (Oct. 1), UND held the Mustangs to a then season-low 202 ground yards. CP entered the game averaging an FCS-best ypg. The Fighting Hawks were also the first team since Sam Houston State in the opening round of the 2012 FCS Playoffs to hold Cal Poly without a rushing touchdown. TEAMMATES AGAIN There are three sets of high school teammates on the 2017 North Dakota football roster. Colorado natives Bryce Blair (OL) and Tyus Carter (DB) were prep teammates at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village before joining the UND program prior to the 2015 season. Blair appeared in seven games during the 2016 season and made his first career start at right tackle in the FCS Playoff game vs. Richmond. Edina High School in Minnesota boasts a pair of Fighting Hawks in Bennett Helgren (OL) and Evan Holm (DB). Holm played for the U.S.A. High School All-America Rugby Team in France and Belgium during the spring of 2016 and appeared in all 12 games as true freshman last year. Helgren redshirted, while nursing a back injury. Rounding out the sets of high school teammates are redshirt freshmen Jordan Canady (DB) and Jake Rastas (ILB), who played prep football together at Eisenhower High School in New Berlin, Wis. Both players are expected to contribute to the defense in BIG TEN BROS Senior safety Chuck Flowers and junior Luke Stanley both have little brothers suiting up for teams in the Big Ten Conference. Flowers brother Emmanuel is a true freshman defensive back at Michigan State, while Stanley s brother Nate is a sophomore quarterback for the Iowa Hawkeyes. HAVE MERCER Texas State transfer De mun Mercer gradually worked his way into a pivotal role in the offense and finished the season leading the team with 553 receiving yards. After not playing in the opener at Stony Brook (Sept. 1) and totalling just three catches for 64 yards through the first five games, Mercer had 25 receptions for 489 yards and four touchdowns in the last seven games. He became the first Fighting Hawk with a 100-yard receiving game this season when he caught seven passes for 147 yards and a touchdown in the regular-season fi nale vs. Northern Arizona (Nov. 12). Mercer added five receptions for 122 yards and two touchdowns in the FCS playoff loss to Richmond (Dec. 3). The last UND player with a 100-yard receiving game had been Clive Georges, who had five catches for 141 yards in the 2015 regular-season finale at Cal Poly (Nov. 21). Mercer s 19.8 ypc also topped the team. BRADY BUNCH Brady Oliveira accounted for a bunch of rushing touchdowns -- nine to be exact -- in league play during the 2016 season and also added the first passing touchdown of his career in the win over Northern Arizona (Nov. 12). He had rushed for at least one touchdown in the first seven league games before going through the air to account for his 10th touchdown of the season against the Lumberjacks. Oliveira added his team-leading 10th rushing score of the season in the FCS playoff loss to Richmond (Dec. 3). LUXURY BOOTS The best position battle in fall camp may have been at punter where special teams coordinator Shawn Kostich has two solid options to choose from in seniors Austin Dussold and Mitch Meindel. Both players made the trip to Utah for the season opener and bring lofty credentials with them. Dussold averaged 42.4 ypp in 2016, which was his first season with UND after transferring from Missouri S&T (DII). Meindel returned to the roster after not playing in 2016 and he holds two of the best single-season ypp averages in program history, including the top one of 44.5 set as a junior in He also averaged 42.4 ypp as a true freshman in 2013, which is the eighth best single-season effort. His career average of 43.1 ypp is also tops on the UND Top 10 list for that category. Dussold ended up winning the job for the first two games and so far has averaged 40.0 ypg on 20 attempts. He has two landed four punts inside the 20-yard line and his best effort was a 50-yarder against Missouri State. DROP DOWNS The 2017 roster will have a trio of players on it that began their careers at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. The newest member of that trio is running back James Johannesson, who spent two seasons with the Minnesota Gophers, but did not see any game action. He was a two-time North Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year in high school at Fargo South. Wide receiver De mun Mercer begins his second season in the program. He led UND in receiving yards a year ago with 553. Mercer was second on the team with 28 receptions and had the only two 100-yard receiving games by a Fighting Hawk in 2016 (vs. NAU and vs. Richmond). The Winnsboro, La., native played his first two collegiate seasons at Texas State where he caught 28 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns during his career for the Bobcats. Linebacker Oscar Nevermann is entering his third season with the program.nevermann joined the program in the spring of 2015, but had to sit out that campaign after Wyoming did not grant his release. The Stockholm, Sweden native played linebacker for the Cowboys and shifted back to that position after playing in three games at running back in 2016 before an injury in game No. 3 his season short YIELDS FIRST FCS PLAYOFF BERTH After posting a perfect 8-0 record in Big Sky play and sharing the conference title with Eastern Washington, the Fighting Hawks were awarded the No. 7 national seed in the 2016 FCS Playoffs. The berth in the postseason tournament was the fi rst for UND at the Division I level. The Fighting Hawks were a first-timer in the FCS playoffs, but the program was no stranger to the postseason. UND registered a overall record during its Division II era in postseason affairs, including a mark in the DII playoffs. UND won the DII National Championship in 2001 and also appeared in the 2003 championship game. UND moved to the FCS level prior to the 2008 season. OSBORN ADDS NAME TO UND FOOTBALL LEGENDS AWARD A member of the 1977 UND Athletics Hall of Fame Class, Dave Osborn is the only player in program history to have his number retired and is the 13th former player or coach to receive the award that was established in Osborn earned his Hall of Fame nod just a year after wrapping up a 12-year professional career that saw him earn All-Pro honors in 1969 after leading

UND s first official athletics nickname was the Flickertails, although its origin remains somewhat a mystery. The nickname made its first public appearance in a Grand Forks Herald account of UND s football loss to Minnesota on Oct. 8, 1904, 15 years after UND s first athletics contest was played. According to Lee Bohnet s A Century of UND Sports, The author was not identified, but there is strong evidence the nickname was coined by a Minneapolis sportswriter who may have covered the game for the Herald. The writer lauded the fighting spirit of the North Dakota players. In 1911, UND s student body officially adopted Flickertails as its athletics nickname. UND would remain known as the Flickertails (as well, unofficially, as the Nodaks ) for a third of a century, establishing an early athletics history. In the fall of 1930, the university adopted the nickname Sioux for its varsity teams following a successful renaming campaign by the Dakota Student, UND s student newspaper. The word Fighting was later added, and UND would be known as the Fighting Sioux until the summer of The university utilized several Fighting Sioux logos throughout the decades, perhaps most notably the green geometric logo introduced in 1976 and the most recent full-color logo was unveiled in The former was designed by an artist at the UND News Bureau, while the latter was created by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien. The University of North Dakota officially retired its longtime Fighting Sioux nickname and logo prior to the athletics season. UND s varsity athletics teams operated without an official nickname, while the university continued the process of adopting the third official nickname in school history last fall. During that time, the university s varsity athletics teams will continue to be referred to as the University of North Dakota, North Dakota, or UND. Former President Dr. Robert Kelley announced in mid-november that Fighting Hawks would be the University s new moniker and the UND football team played under that nickname in its 2015 season finale at Cal Poly -- a victory over the Mustangs. 9 INSIDE THE SERIES... UC DAVIS PREVIEW Head coach Dan Hawkins returned to the sidelines after six seasons away from the coaching ranks and took over the reigns of his alma mater -- UC Davis. Hawkins, who played fullback for the Aggies from , rose to national fame as the head coach of the Boise State Broncos ( ). He then spent five seasons as the head coach at Colorado ( ) before serving as a television analyst in recent seasons. Hawkins has the Aggies off to a 2-2 start in his first campaign and the Fighting Hawks will be the second 2016 FCS Playoff team that his team will try to beat. He picked up his first UC Davis in week two when the Aggies knocked off San Diego A week later, UC Davis routed Portland State in a road win between two Big Sky programs that were playing a nonconference game. Hawkins Big Sky opener a week ago did not go well as No. 18 Weber State posted a 41-3 victory. KEEP YOUR EYE ON... Junior wide receiver Keelan Doss (No. 3) has been the favorite target of newcomer Jake Maier (No. 15) for the pass-happy Aggies, who are averaging 38 pass attempts a game so far this season. He was a second-team All-Big Sky performer in 2016 when he finished the season with 66 catches for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns. Doss also has the lone interception for the Aggies this season, taking back a pick off a Hail Mary attempt 25 yards when he was on the hands team against the Aztecs at the end of the first half. Maier spent his first collegiate season at Sacred Heart as a redshirt before playing last season at Long Beach City College where he was Southern California Football Association Central Division Offensive Player of the Year after passing for 3,689 yards and 38 touchdowns. Maier has already thrown for 1,270 yards (317.5 ypg) and eight scores for the Aggies. He found 10 different receivers last Saturday against the Wildcats, going 26-for-43 for 327 yards. Sophomore linebacker Nas Anesi (No. 11) leads the team with 24 tackles, while cornerback Vincent White (No. 20) has added 23 to go with a team-high five pass break-ups. That figure ranks second among Big Sky defenders. 10 UC Davis 24 GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- North Dakota held on for a victory over UC Davis in its Big Sky Conference opener Saturday at the Alerus Center. True freshman John Santiago rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns for UND (3-1), while senior linebacker Will Ratelle racked up a career-high 15 tackles to lead the defensive effort. It was the second 100-yard rushing game of Santiago s brief career and his output topped his season-opening effort at Wyoming by four yards. He also added 94 yards on three kickoff returns to give him 246 total yards. Twelve of Ratelle s total tackles were of the solo variety and he added four tackles for loss and a sack as UND s defense yielded only 287 yards of total offense to the Aggies. UC Davis (0-4) remained winless despite a trio of passing touchdowns by senior quarterback Ben Scott, who completed 70 percent of his passes (14-for-20) for 174 yards. After Santiago returned the opening kickoff 46 yards, the UND offense marched down the remaining 54 yards on seven carries to strike first. Santiago capped that opening drive with a 2-yard scoring run, which was his third of the season. Both teams turned short fields into touchdowns after each defensive unit came up with a first-quarter interception. UND came up with the first turnover of the game when Deion Harris set his offense up at the UC Davis 9-yard line compliments of a 31-yard interception return. Senior tight end Zach Adler put his team ahead 14-0 after making a leaping grab in the back of the end zone on 3rd-and-goal from the four. That would be the first of two passing scores for Keaton Studsrud in the opening 30 minutes, but after the defense forced a punt, the sophomore signal caller threw his first interception of the season. The Aggies made it a contest after a 19-yard field goal that was set up on a flea flicker that went for 36 yards down to the UND 2-yard line. With momentum on the Aggies side after scoring 10 straight points, Martin was on his way to setting up his team in prime field position with a 49-yard punt return, but Miguel Cerriteno never gave up on the play and stripped the ball loose to create the second turnover of the game. Senior captain Brandon Anderson pounced on the loose ball to give UND possession back on its own 26-yard line and the home team would take advantage of that opportunity. UND would chew up all but 17 seconds of the remaining clock in the opening half on an 11-play drive that took nearly four minutes. Studsrud capped the team s third touchdown drive of the half with a 3-yard strike to Luke Stanley to put his team ahead at the break. UND kept momentum on its side following a 15-yard punt by the Aggies that gave the Green and White possession at the UCD 30-yard line. Santiago would cap that quick, four-play drive with a six-yard scoring run that gave UND its largest lead of the game at The Aggies would have an answer for that score as Scott engineered a mammoth drive, 14-play, 74-yard drive that was capped by Martin s second touchdown reception of the game from 20 yards out. UND would build its lead back to 14 points again at thanks to a season-long 46-yard field goal by Reid Taubenheim late in the third quarter. Ratelle would sack Scott on the opening play of the fourth quarter and the Aggies signal caller would have to leave the game after that play. Redshirt freshman C.J. Spencer would replace him, but UC Davis would go three-and-out. UND was unable to get anything going on the offensive side of the ball through most of the fourth quarter, allowing UC Davis to climb back into the game with a late touchdown. Scott, who re-entered the game on the Aggies last scoring drive, found Alex Cannon from two yards out to make it a one-touchdown contest. The Aggies opted to kick the ball deep despite not having any timeouts left and that decision would prove costly. The UND offense picked up four first downs and ran off the remaining 6:07 that was left on the clock. True freshman Iwarri Smith logged the last of that quartet on a six-yard gain as he finished with eight carries for 33 yards in his most produtive action of the season. Studsrud picked up 59 yards on the ground to give UND a team total of 240 as that attack averaged six yards per carry in the contest. Through the air, the sophomore finished 8-for-19 for 58 yards and those two first-half passing scores. Alma Mater: University of Jamestown ( 91) Bubba Schweigert has developed a nice pattern through his first three seasons as the head football coach at North Dakota. Each year his squad produced two more victories than the previous one and 2016 was no exception as he was named the Big Sky and FCS Region 5 Coach of the Year. The Fighting Hawks shared the Big Sky Conference regular season title with Eastern Washington, reeled off a 9-game winning streak and earned the No. 7 overall seed in the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs in After losing the first two games of the season by a combined four points, a double-overtime victory against South Dakota launched UND into Big Sky play where the Fighting Hawks ran the table. There were tight games and lopsided games, but his team always found a way to come out on top in league play and give UND its first undefeated conference record since Dale Lennon s 2003 squad went 7-0 in North Central Conference play. The defense was once again the top-rated run unit in the league and sixth -best in the FCS. The unit was also tops in the Big Sky with 20 interceptions and tied for second nationally, trailing only national champion James Madison in that category. Four Fighting Hawks earned All-America accolades, including safety Cole Reyes, who landed on six different All-America squads. The junior captain was also named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year. Reyes was one of 15 UND players to earn All-Big Sky honors on the field, while 18 set a program record by being named to the All-Big Sky Academic Team. He was also a unanimous All-Big Sky first team performer and was joined on that team by senior linebacker Will Ratelle and offensive lineman Sean Meehan, who was also named to the AFCA All-America Team. Eight more Fighting Hawks would garner all-league honors in 2015 as the defense once again ranked among the tops in the Big Sky, ranking first in rush defense and second in total defense. In the classroom, 17 UND football players were named to the All-Big Sky Academic Team, breaking the previous year s record by one. In his first season back at UND, Schweigert s 2014 squad won five games overall, which was a two-game improvement from the previous season. The campaign was highlighted by a upset of No. 22 Northern Arizona in the final home game of the season at the Alerus Center. UND took the positive vibes from a victory that knocked NAU out of the On Dec 28, 2013, Schweigert was introduced as the head coach at the University of North Dakota during a press conference in front of a standing-room only crowd at the Alerus Center.

The defensive-minded head coach still works with the team s cornerbacks and they were part of a unit that led the Big Sky in total defense and rush defense in Two newcomers earned All-Big Sky Conference honors (KR Alex Tillman and PK Reid Taubenheim) and seven more players were named honorable mention in Schweigert s first season. There were also 16 UND football players named to the All-Big Sky Academic team, which tied a program record for individuals honored in one season. The Zeeland, N.D., native returned to Grand Forks after 10 years away from a program that he helped lead to the 2001 NCAA Division II national title as defensive coordinator. Prior to his return to UND, Schweigert was the defensive coordinator at Southern Illinois for the previous six seasons ( ) and served as associate head coach for the last five of that stretch. His 2010 defense led the Missouri Valley in total defense and his unit finished in the top half of the league in four of his six campaigns at SIU. In his six seasons at SIU, Schweigert coached three first team All- Americans and 20 all-conference selections (10 first team, six second team, four honorable mentions). His defensive standouts have included linebacker and 2012 graduate Jayson DiManche, currently playing for Cincinnati Bengals, and cornerback Korey Lindsey, a three-time All- American and a 2011 draft pick of the Bengals. In 2013, SIU linebacker Bryan Presume earned first team All-MVFC honors after ranking third in the league with 104 tackles. His 55 solo stops were tops in the conference. Prior to arriving at SIU, Schweigert took on his first head coaching job at the collegiate level, leading the Division II program at Minnesota Duluth from He guided the Bulldogs to a overall record during his tenure, including the program s first North Central Conference title in The NCAA playoff berth that season was the program s second in four seasons. That same season, Schweigert was also named the D2football.com Northwest Region Coach of the Year and the AFCA Division II Coach of the Year for Region 5. 20 north dakota 16 SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- 25th-ranked Utah outlasted Eighthranked North Dakota in a matchup of ranked opponents from their respective levels of college football. The Football Bowl Subdivision s Utes won their 10th-straight season opener by outgaining the Football Championship Subdivision s Fighting Hawks in total offense and by outrushing the visitors One thing that I asked our team to do was play hard for 60 minutes and I think our guys did that tonight, UND head coach Bubba Schweigert said. Could we play better? Sure. I think we can execute better. Defensively, (Darren) Carrington hurt us. We always want to tackle better and we take a lot of pride in tackling. We probably didn t do that as well as we needed to. Offensively, we want to run the ball with more consistency, but we knew that would be a challenge coming into the game. The Utes defensive front bottled up the All-Big Sky running back duo of John Santiago and Brady Oliveira, holding them to a combined 35 yards on 17 attempts. Quarterback Keaton Studsrud went 13-for-28 through the air for 175 yards and a touchdown, but the offense could never gain any traction in front of the 45th-straight sellout at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Studsrud went 3-for-3 for 76 yards on UND s lone touchdown drive that cut a fourth-quarter deficit to 27-16, but the Utes would get the final 10 points to end any thoughts of an upset. Sophomore Travis Toivonen led UND with four receptions for 64 yards, while senior De mun Mercer added three grabs for 32 yards. The Fighting Hawks were within a score at halftime thanks to the leg of placekicker Reid Taubenheim, who made all three of his field goal attempts in the opening 30 minutes. 21 MISSOURI STATE 0 GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- In Bubba Schweigert s third game as head coach at North Dakota back in 2014, UND was on the receiving end of a 38-0 Missouri State victory. Schweigert and the Fighting Hawks exacted a decisive measure of revenge on Saturday afternoon, pounding the Bears 34-0 in the 52nd annual Potato Bowl USA game. Eleventh-ranked UND (1-1) broke things open with a 21-point outburst in the second quarter when sophomore wide receiver Noah Wanzek hauled in a pair of touchdown catches and John Santiago added a rushing score. That turned a 3-0 game into a 24-point lead for the home team, sending the Fighting Hawks to their fourth straight Potato Bowl win and their first Potato Bowl shutout since The shutout was also the first of the Schweigert era and first overall for the program since the 2012 season opener, a 66-0 blanking of South Dakota Mines. I won t say we expected a shutout, but that s the goal every time we go out there, Schweigert said. It was a good team win. We still have some things to clean up, but anytime you can run the ball the way we did and stop the run like we did, you re going to give yourself a chance for a positive result and that s we got today. UND had chances early to break the game up open, but two trips inside the Bears red zone in the opening quarter only yielded a 25-yard field goal by Senior Reid Taubenheim. VERMILLION, S.D. -- No. 23 South Dakota delivered a decisive 45-7 victory over No. 10 North Dakota in a matchup of border rivals at the DakotaDome on Saturday. In the only matchup of FCS-ranked foes this weekend, the Coyotes (3-0) dominated from the onset as the Fighting Hawks (1-2) could never find a rhythm on either side of the ball. This is one of those games you really have to learn from, UND head coach Bubba Schweigert said. We can t just flush this one away. Early on, it was penalties that cost us. We had third-andtwo and third-and-three that turned into third-and-long situations. You just can t do that. Then we couldn t stop their run game. We had chances to get them off the field and could not come up with a stop. That was the most disappointing part of it. South Dakota quarterback Chris Streveler showed early in the contest why he had won back-to-back Missouri Conference Offensive Player of the Week accolades to start the season. Behind their senior leader, the Coyotes built a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and added two more touchdowns in the second quarter to jump out a 31-0 lead at halftime. Streveler had 49 rushing yards and a touchdown and went 17- for-23 through the air for 241 yards and a score before the break and finished with 352 yards of total offense and accounted for three of the Coyotes five touchdowns. True freshman Kai Henry matched Streveler s two rushing scores and rushed for a teamhigh 80 yards on 12 carries. UND managed just 103 yards of total offense in the first half and its best scoring chance came after a 66-yard kickoff return by John Santiago, but came up empty after a 41-yard field goal attempt by Reid Taubenheim sailed wide. The Coyotes were stout defensively too as UND went just 1-for- 12 on third-down conversions and came up empty on four fourth-down attempts. The Fighting Hawks cracked the scoreboard midway through the third-quarter when Keaton Studsrud found Travis Toivonen from 10 yards out, but it was too late to mount the thrilling comeback UND put together a season ago in the doubleovertime win against the Coyotes in Grand Forks. Santiago finished with 85 yards rushing to pace UND, who finished with just 102 total yards on the ground. GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Montana State quarterback Chris Murray accounted for four touchdowns and the Bobcats piled up twice as many total yards as North Dakota to knock off the 17thranked Fighting Hawks in the Big Sky opener for both teams Saturday at the Alerus Center. After going three-and-out on their opening possession, the Bobcats (1-2, 1-0 BSC) scored touchdowns on seven of their next eight times with the ball to snap UND s 11-game league winning streak that dated back to the 2015 season. MSU s victory over the Fighting Hawks (1-3, 0-1 BSC) also came in front of the first sellout crowd at the Alerus Center since the 2009 season opener. MSU finished with a 515 to 255 edge in total offense with 341 of those coming on the ground. The visitors also went 12-for- 16 on third-down conversions, including a stretch where they converted 10 in a row to help own a 19:22 time of possession advantage (39:41 to 20:19). The Bobcats blocked a 45-yard field goal attempt by Reid Taubenheim in the opening quarter and would turn that momentum into the first of four opening-half touchdowns. The first two came on the ground, compliments of Logan Jones (11 yards) and Troy Andersen (2 yards). Murray tossed the final two scores of the half, finding Wilston Brott on a 12-yard strike and Jabarri Johnson on a 13-yarder with 57 ticks to play.
