1 SPECAL SPRNG SUPPLEMENT* (Emmectott Satn (Eamjros Servnq Storrs Snce X0 VOL. LXXX N0.-H7 yorrs, CQNNECTCUJ (203) 429*9384 WEDNESDA Y. MA Y Staf* Phcto by Phl Knudsen An expected crowd of about 15,000 for Sunday's concert turned out to be no more than 10,000 accordng to the Board of Governors [BOG] whch sponsored the outdoor concert featurng Tower of Power, NRBQ and other bands. Concert problems cost BOG $6,000 By MATT MANZELLA The UConn Board of Governors (BOG), after experencng several conflcts and mshaps, fnally produced an outdoor concert Sunday, though t resulted n an added $6,000 n costs to UConn students, BOG Presdent Steve Garson sad Tuesday. The frst major problem occured last Wednesday when Frederck G. Adams, vce presdet, for student affars and servces, told BOG! s concert would have to start at 2 p.m. nstead of noon because the Renassance Far, beng held on the Student Unon Mall, would be d :.» upted by the musc comng from the Graduate Feld. BOC chose the Graduate Feld ste two months ago, shortly after beng dened use of the Mall because Renassance Far coordnators had reserved ts use last June. The two-hour delay would have meant a loss of $3,000 resultng from contract agreements to have two bands play n that tme slot. Then, on Frday, after several rado statons n Connectcut had broadcast that UConn was Chartes rase over $7,000 By NANCY SALVATORE An estmated $7,300 has been donated to charty followng fundrasng actvtes whch took place over the past few weeks by several UConn student organzatons, $4,700 of whch wll go to the Amercan Cancer Socety. Jefferson House dormtory, Delta Ch fraternty, Hartford Hall dormtory, WHUS and a majorty of Assocated Student Commssares (ASC) dormtores ntated fundrasng actvtes because ths year's Campus Communty Carnval faled to get off the ground. Ron Wllams, staton manager at WHUS, attrbuted the falure of the communty carnval to a lack of nterest and "catalysts" to get the carnval movng. "Because the carnval fell apart ths year, a lot of organzatons around campus decded to try thngs on ther own," he sad. WHUS' fundraser came up wth $600 for four chartes, the March of Dmes, Mansfeld Tranng School, the Black Voces of Freedom Gospel Chor, and Ned Cole's Revtalzaton Corps, whch serves nner-cty youths n Hartford, Wllams sad. A Bke-A-Thon last weekend sponsored by Jefferson House had 48 rders pedalng for 168 hours. The proceeds, totallng $2,000, wll go to the Muscular Dystrophy Assocaton. The combned efforts of the Assocated Student Commssares (ASC), Hartford Hall, and Delta Ch fraternty velded the $4,700 for the Amercan Cancer Socety. Delta Ch brothers sponsored a 24-hour marathon softball game whch rased about $1,500. havng a free concert, fears of an estmated 15,000 people showng up Sunday prompted the admnstraton to order the concert ether cancelled or relocated to a less central area on campus to ad crowd control and protect aganst vandalsm, Garson sad. Accordng to Garson, ths resulted n a fnal fgure of $6,000 more n costs when the concert was fnally located n the W-Lot feld, though the startng tme of the concert was reset at the orgnal tme of noon. Whle the Graduate Feld locaton would have provded BOG wth dressng rooms for band members, the locaton n W-Lot requred $1,500 to pay for the use of shuttle buses as dressng rrooms and the remanng $4,000 resulted from extra electrcal mantenance and bathrooms. Garson sad he was surpsed the concert started on tme and went so well. The chlly, wndy weather, though bad for the sound, helped to lmt the crowd. There were only a few mnor njures reported. Watson woman accosted n shower By KAREN A. 11 SS t K A resdent of Watson Hall was accosted n the shower on Wednesday, Aprl 26, by a man wth a knfe, the Head Resdent of Watson Hall sad Tuesday. Lnda Thomas, Head Resdent of Watson Hall, sad the young woman was takng a shower on Wednesday afternoon "around 3:00 p.m." when she was accosted by a man who threatened her wth a knfe. When the woman screamed, the man fled from the bathroom leavng the dormtory. Other floor members, who were alerted by the woman's screams, came to the scene and got a descrpton of the attacker. He s reported to be about 5' 8" to 5' 10". heavy set, shoulder length black har that curls at the end. and a "squashed" face. Unconfrmed reports say the man has been seen n Watson Hall and Eddy Hall snce the attack. UConn polce wll not comment on the ncdent although a polceman has been statoned n Watson, accordng to a Resdent Assstant of Watson Hall. The resdents of Watson Hall have been notfed of the ncdent and the composte, and of precautons to be taken. BREFLY... The Weather: ^unny and warm today, hgh temperature n the low 60's. MOORE/ Managng Edtor MATTHEW T MANZELLA/ Salor Edllor Second class ctzens? Last weekend's free Boarjl of Governors-sponsored open ar concert was plagued by admnstratve mx-ups that never should have been allowed to happen, and a great deal of the blame les wth the admnstraton. The concert was scheduled to oegn at noon on Sunday, but four days before the concert BOG was nformed by the UConn admnstraton that the concert could not begn untl 2 p.m. The postponement was necessary because the musc would dsturb the vstors at the Renassance Far, whch was beng held on the same day on the Student Unon Mall. The second-rate treatment the admnstraton afford BOG s unforgveable. The board wll never be able to organze bg events f t cannot get the cooperaton of the admnstraton. The stuaton was further complcated by the unwllngness of the organzers of the Renassance far to move the ste of the far to ether the Graduate Feld or the Chemstry Feld. The Student Unon Mall would have been deally suted for an open-ar concert. The surroundng buldngs would have kept the sound from the concert group from the rest of the campus especally the Renassance Far. Fortunately, the concert was held as scheduled, but n W-Lot, whch was plagued by wnds and some non-uconn patrons. BOG has often been crtczed for not stagng bg events featurng bg bands. t s unfortunately that the one tme ths year they tred, they are forced to deal wth not only the usual last mnute frustratons, but unnecessary frustratons from the Unversty and a small part of ts communty as well. By GEORGE F. WLL WASHNGTON Fve women, all Los Angeles muncpal workers, have won a Supreme Court case that s, n several sense, cavaler. The Court has ruled, 6-2, that women cannot be requred to pay more than men must pay nto penson plans, n spte of the fact that women, on average, lve longer than men and are apt to draw more n benefts than men wll draw. The Court has dscovered that when Congress passed the 1964 Cvl Rghts Act, makng t unlawful for an employer to dscrmnate on the bass of sex. Congress (t wll be nterested to learn) banned a common and actuarally sound penson and nsurance practce that has been used for at least 135 years. Wrtng for the majorty, Justce John Paul Stevens notes that dfferent mortalty rates may not reflect "nnate" dfferences between the sexes, but rather may reflect socal factors, such as heaver smokng by men. Stevens does not make t clear why that s legally mportant. Hs pont s just that the generalzaton that women lve longer, although true, does not justfy a rule that apples to a woman to whom the generalzaton wll, n the end, not apply. n a dssent, joned by Justce Wllam Rehnqust, Chef Justce Warren Burger says t s "rratonal" to assume that n 1964 Congress ntended to outlaw the use of the fact that women as a class outlve men. But Burger argues that a sgnfcant effect on a large ndustry "should not be read nto the statute wthout ether a clear statement of that ntent n the statute, or some relable ndcaton n the legslatve hstory that ths was Congress' purpose...t s reasonably clear there was no ntenton to abrogate an employer's rght, n ths narrow and lmted context, to treat women dfferently from men n the face of hstorcal relance mortalty experence statstcs." Justce s not a matter of treatng everyone alke, but treatng smlar cases smlarly and makng reason- able dstnctons between cases. So llct dscrmnaton cannot smply be nferred from the mere exstence of dfferent rules for dfferent categores of persons. Rather, there s llct dscrmnaton aganst a group f specal rules appled to t are rratonal and njurous. But the rule that the Court has struck down s statstcally sound and desgned to produce a equtable result: women and men payng comparable 6E0R6EF Wll amounts for comparable benefts. But Burger notes that the practce struck down dd not consttute dscrmnaton aganst women, and the act of strkng t down s dscrmnatory aganst men. What the gallant men of the majorty dd s rule that n many cases men shall subsdze women by payng what women pay, and know that women wll draw more benefts. A good effect of ths decson wll be to make t harder for advocates of the Equal Rghts Amendment to argue that ERA s ether necessary or prudent. There s an abundance of laws that lend themselves to attacks on sex dscrmnaton, real or (as n ths case) magned. Consderedn the lght of ths abundance, the attempt to wrte ERA nto the Consttuton looks more lke an deologcal gesture than a serous legal response to problems that can only be attacked by such a drastc measure. Surely the naton's fundamental document should not be used for deologcal grandstandng. And untl the rage to "mprove" on the ntentons! of leglatures subsdes n the federal judcary, t would be mprudent for legslators to mplant n the Consttuton a vague asserton of "equalty of rghtr,," an asserton that wll be regarded by many judges as a lcense to legslate. 3 ' Campus reportng t>ush league' To the Edtor: The artcle of Aprl 10 enttled "Datng at Faces Falls Flat," was a blue-rbbon wnner n the poor journalsm category. The dance was not held on Frday nght as he reported; rather t was Thursday nght. Bernadett Barabas s not the charwoman of South Campus and should not have been quotes as such. There was no dance contest n whch wnners were gven 'VP' cards for free admsson to Faces for the next three months. The fact that these mstakes were made can be overlooked, but the blatant msquotaton of Barabas s unforgvable. To say that "the boys were takng the whole thng too serously" s an absurd statement. How anyone could get ths dea s beyond me. To quote your artcle, "Most grls who were at Faces Frday nght sad they dd not have a good tme..." All of the grls talked to, both at Faces and after the event sad they had had a good tme. Who the hell dd you talk to? t certanly wasn't Barabas! Apparently you have already determned the success of our event before you ntervewed anyone. Ths type of reportng s bush-league and would only be accepted by a paper lke the Daly Campus. The event at Faces was a great success and South Campus Councl would not hestate to do t agan. The next tme you cover one of our events try to get the real story, not the one you thnk would make a catchy headlne. Robert L. Moser Charperson South Campus Councl BOG programs scored To the Edtor: am wrtng to protest the under-programmng of mnorty event by the Board of Governors (BOG). Daly Campus Supplement, Wednesday, May v FlStfTCR "COWMS AlRLlNfER'.THE HEADLNES READ. A recent letter stated "almost 30 per cent of the events are programmed towards mnortes." Also that "the cultural majorty does not seem to be gettng a far shake." f 70 per cent of the events sponsored by BOG are geared towards the tastes of whte students (the number s probably hgher) how can someone say that sn't a far shake? Yes, there are few mnortes on ths predomnantly whte campus. But because we are small n number does not mean we should be overlooked. Because we are small n number does not mean we should be consdered non-exstent. The mnortes on ths campus pay the same fees that the whte students pay. We deserve satsfacton for our money just lke the whte students. f you don't want us to "play the game," return our money. f BOG doesn't want to sponsor events for mnortes, then the fee should be omtted from ther fee blls. The BOG has been anythng but ntmdated. Attempts have been made to make members on BOG realzae that mnortes are here, have pad ther money and demand to be accounted for. BOG s DOONESBURY FASTR' responsble for the entertanment needs of the student body. Mnortes are part of the student body. t angers me when mnortes have to go, n numbers, to a BOG meetng and symbolcally beg for a concert or progra after we have pad our money. t angers me when mnortes have to persuade BOG to be responsble to them, when the mere fact that the fee s ncluded on ther fee bll should be enough. Eva M. Hghsmth Ronald Pape for Presdent To the Edtor: The recent vacancy created by Glenn Ferguson's resgnaton as Presdent of UConn has also created a need for someone to fll hs shoes. The poston demands someone wth ntegrty, drve and a love for chldren. And, at a Whte House conference Tuesday, Rosalynn Carter and offcals of 14 federal agences sad few people realze how large a role solar energy now plays albet ndrectly n the Unted States. They sad' the actvtes planned Wednesday from Mane to Hawa should drve home the mportance of the sun as a vrtually lmtless energy source. Dens Hayes, orgnator of Sun Day and the only speaker not employed by the government, sad Presdent Carter has made a start toward changng federal polces that have "consstently dscrmnated aganst those energy sources that consttute our brghest energy hopes." Capra was named Outstandng Young Man of the Year n 1969 by the New Haven Jaycees. But Hayes also crtczed Carter for cuttng next year's federal solar budget by 10 percent and for opposng a solar loan program supported by a bpartsan congressonal coalton. He sad solar energy supporters would examne closely the new polcy Carter s expected to announce today. "There's a pont that s frequently mssed," Dr. James MacKenze of the presdent's Concl on Envronmental Qualty told the Whte House conference. "Solar energy... already contrbutes almost 6 percent of our natonal energy budget. That's n the form of 4 percent n hydro dams and about 1.5 percent n the form of bomass that s burned by paper mlls and so forth. "So solar energy already contrbutes roughly twce what nuclear does, or a thrd of what coal does. However you want to look at t. t's a major contrbutor already." 8 Daly Campus Supplement, Wednesday, May 3, 1978 Wth 'Dwght' at hs sde Knee healed, boucher nches toward seven feet By LUANNE NOVELLO njures and athletcs seem to go hand n hand. At tmes an athlete may only suffer a mnor setback n hs tranng, but occasonally an njury may be serous enough to cut short a promsng career. Ths was the possblty whch faced Unversty of Connectcut hgh-jumper Peter Boucher. He showed great potental comng to UConn as Connectcut state hgh school champon out of Ledyard Hgh n Hs freshman year he mproved fve nches over hs prevous hgh school best to take second n the New England Champonshps, and wn the Outdoor Yankee Conference Champonshps. The next year, he fnshed second n every meet behnd Patrck Auger. UConn's top hgh-jukper. Then last October he twsted hs knee n a mnor fall. Not wantng to nterrupt hs pre-season condtonng. Boucher contnued workng out wth the njured knee. Wthn a week he had torn the cartlage so badly that t warranted an operaton. " was really upset." Pete recalls. "t seemed lke could never have a season wthout an njury. Durng my freshman year. was dong well untl tore my rb muscles. Then sophomore year njured my arch. stll haven't had a chance to really put my jumpng together." n leu of the operaton t was predcted that he would be foreced to st out hs junor year to rebuld the damaged knee. But Peter had other deas. As mposs- Staff Photo by John Gebhardt Concentraton show on the face of UConn hgh junper Pete Boucher as he clears the bar. Boucher set personal bests of 6' 10" n both the New England and C4A track champonshps. Boucher overcame a serous knee njury to get back nto competton for the Huskes. ble as t seems, he wanted to compete, and nobody's predctons would dscourage hm. On October 26 he underwent surgery to remove the torn cartlage. The day followng the operaton he started therapy to rehabltate the muscles n hs knee. "The frst tme all had to do was lft my leg off the bed. dd t twce, then was exhausted." Wthn two days he was walkng wth crutches and began a weght lftng program. "They started by havng me lft 2'/2 lbs. straght legged. That sounds easy, but my leg felt so dsorented had a lot of trouble. had to thnk about each ndvdual muscle to make t work." By the end of two weeks he had dscarded hs crutches and was lftng ten pounds. Hs goal was to lfe 50 pounds n order to get permsson to compete. " started runnng about four weeks after the operaton, then chanced a couple of jumps. Everyone was afrad 1 would renjure myself but my knee felt fne," Boucher sad. Ths January, less than two months after the surgery, Boucher competed n hs frst meet of the ndoor season jumpng 6'4" to place second behnd Auger. A few weeks later he leaped 6'8" to capture frst place at Yale Unversty. Wth each successve week he mproved to fnally place second n the New England Champonshps and seventh n the pretgous ntercollegate Assocaton of Amateur Athletes of Amerca (C4A) Champonshps. Both tmes he cleared a personal best of 610". " was pleased wth the ndoor season. t was rewardng just to be able to compete," Boucher mantans, but, he adds, "'d stll lke to go hgher. " was very surprsed and pleased wth Pete's performance ths year. never thought he'd be able to compete ths ndoor season," UConn Head Track Coach Bll Kelleher sad. '' n terms of hgh jumpng, Pete wll defntely be able to fll Pat't (Auger) shoes. Although he does have a few form problems, 1 fully expect hm to go at least seven feet," Kelleher sad. Pete credts much of hs success to Kelleher and team captan Pat Auger. " never had a coach n hgh school, so Coach Kelleher has been a bg nfluence on me. was mpressed wth the track program when he recruted me, but probably would have gone somewhere else f Pat wasn't here. knew would mprove by judmpng wth hm. He's really helped me out a lot." Accordng to Peter, another "frend" who has helped hm ths year s a small, stuffed dog whch accompanes hm to all meets. Named Dwght. after former world record holder Dwght Stones, the dog was a pre-' sent whch Boucher receved at the tme of hs surgery. " know t may sound crazy, but took hm to all my physcal therapy sessons, and now talk to hm durng the meet when 'm havng trouble. He just helps me to concentrate better." Whether t's a stuffed dog, hard work, or just plan stubborness, Peter Boucher has overcome the odds, and s on the way to conquer hs next "mpossble dream." * just want to thank you all for helpng out at Sunday's Tower of Power concert because wthout you we never could k have had such a good show. "We haven't sent the contract back yet but yes we wll defntely be n the Connectcut Mutual Classc n 1980," sad Army head basketball coach Mke Krzyzewsk. The nvtaton and acceptance was the result of many months of slow-paced negotatons between Krzyzewsk and former UConn head basketball coach Dee Rowe, who are close personal frends. Army s the second school to be nvted to the 1980 classc, whch s cosponsored by the Connectcut Mutual Lfe nsurance Co. and UConn. St. Lous Unversty s the other team that wll partcpate n the 1980 Classc. The Connectcut Mutual Classc wll not be the only tourney that Army wll be playng n that season. Army wll also be takng part n the Bluebonnet Classc hosted by the Unversty of Houston n early December. Army, whch was 20-8 two years ago and took part n the ECAC playoffs, was 19-V last season whle playng a very mpressve schedule. Among Army's opponents were Maryland, and Penn State. The Cadets also partcpated n the Marquette Tournament and the Sun Bowl n El Paso where they defeated Kansas State and lost to Memphs State n the fnals by one pont. Army also took part n the Metro ECAC playoffs where t defeated Seton Hall and lost n the fnals to St. John's Unversty. After ths, the Cadets were nvted to the Natonal nvtatonal Tournament (NT) where t lost by two ponts to Rutgers Unversty n the openng round. As far as a possble return game at Army s concerned there aj-e no openngs on Army's schedule untl The major reason for that s the number of commttments ARmy has to Metropoltan ECAC opponents, such as Seton Hall and St. John's. Army also has commttments n 1980 to play Holy Cross. Northeastern and New Hampshre, accordng to Krzvzewsk. " hope that playng n the Classc wll help our recrutng. t s a frst-class tournament and playng at the rebult' Hertford Cvc Center wll gve our program good exposure." he sad. Bob Farbotko awats NFL college draft By MKE SOLOMON Watng for that one phone call can be a tough experence. Just ask Bob Farbotko, the 6'7" 225 pound tght end who recently fnshed hs playng days wth the UConn football team. That one phone call may just be the most mportant one Farbotko wll ever receve, becaue t may be Fasbotko's rde nto the world of professonal football. Bob Farbotko s watng to be drafted n the NFL college draft. "Rght now t s tough fallng asleep knowng that can play pro football. t's been a dream of mne all my lfe." sad Farbotko. Farbotko played most of hs senor year at UConn expectng at least a shot at the '78 draft. "One thng s for sure. Gettng drafted by the Cowboys would be hell. After all, they are pretty deep n both tght end and n tackle." Farbotko added. One problem Farbotko could face s hs sze. n pro football standards, Bob would be too slow for tght end, and as of now hs 225 weght s too small for the tackle poston. "A lot of scouts have told me they are wary of my speed, but that s somethng could work on. Most teams, would magne, would want me for a quck tackle poston. For that, would have to put on a few pounds," Farbotko sad. 11 Daly Campus Supplement, Wednesday. May 3, ) > : ; t Sports Commentary: Why Bob Sbla won't wrestle here any more By RCH DePRETA Jn the past sx months, UConn head football coach Walt Nadzak has done some good thngs to try to mprove the Husky football program. Nadzak has recruted over a dozen freshman players and sx junor college transfers for next year. Nadzak also has receved a commttment of $30,000 n scholarshp ad from the UConn Alumn Assocaton. Evdently the $30,000 was not enough for Nadzak as ths s a story about a scholarshp that Nadzak took away and the player who lost t and so wll be leavng UConn. n September of 1976 when Larry Navaux was UConn head football coach and the Husky football fortunes were on the declne, Bob Sbla after beng seen by a UConn assstant football coach at hs hgh school n New Jersey was gven a four year grant n ad of scholarshp to come to Storrs. After a year on the sub-varsty football teams. Sbla was promoted to the varsty squad. However, Sbla, who was lsted as a cornerback, was placed nearly out of sght on the football depth chart meanng that the coachng staff and Nadzak had lttle confdence n Sbla's ablty. Nadzak had so lttle confdence n Sbla that he relegated Bob to holdng football dummes durng practce or makng beleve he was a runnng back on the team UConn was to face on Saturday so the starters could be famlar wth the opposton and ts formatons. Not exactly a helluva lot of use for someone on scholarshp. Besdes beng a football player at Nutley Hgh fn New Jersey, Sbla was also an outstandng wrestler. n fact, Sbla was dstrct and regonal champon n addton to Most Valuable Wrestler at Nutley. The UConn wrestlng coachng staff knew ths. They also knew how lttle Nadzak was usng Sbla and even though Sbla mssed much of the wrestlng team's early season practce because ofhs dutes holdng dummes on the football feld,' he stll managed to place thrd n the New England wrestlng champonshps n both years he was on the team. Sbla was not thrlled wth football and hs dstnct lack of use, and he was very nterested n pursung wrestlng. Members of the UConn wrestlng staff asked coach Nadzak f Sbla could just wrestle and not play football ths past season snce Nadzak really dd not have any plans for hm. However, Nadzak usng the phlosophy that Sbla was gven a scholarshp to play football, even though t dd not specfcally cte football anywhere on the agreements, vetoed ths proposal. How anyone could feel that by holdng football dummes someone was earnng ther scholarshp more than by playng n another varsty sport s beyond belef. When the wrestlng staff went to UConn athletc drector John Toner wth the same proposal all fhey got was a flat "no" and the comment "that damn kd wll do nothng for the unversty". Obvously, Toner never bothered to check the wrestlng results, otherwse he never would have made the statement. The wrestlng staff made another proposal. They suggested Sbla's scholarshp be cut n hald and just let hm wrestle and gve the extra money to someone else who mght just do more than hold practce dummes. Sbla, although he could have used the money to pay the out-of-state tuton he was faced wth, was agreeable to that. However, Nadzak agan vetoed ths sayng smply "No football, no money." Ths phlosophy s smlar to someone cuttng off ther nose to spte ther face and about as effectve. But the story gets better. Nadzak. even though he has over 30 scholarshps to play wth, stll wants Sbla's grant-n-ad. makes hs own suggeston to Sbla before the start of last season. Nadzak suggests that he wll let Sbla wat/ through the football season f Bob agrees to transfer at the end of the school year whch s ths May. So Sbla, seeng that he wll not get anywhere any other way, agrees to the bargan, and ths September wll be wrestlng at Montclar State College n New Jersey and Walt Nadzak wll get hs scholarshp to gve to someone else. s a wnnng football program needed so badly that Walt Nadzak has forgotten that he s dealng wth human bengs and not meat on the hoof? sn't Walt Nadzak happy enough that he and hs losng football team has more scholarshps than the rest of the sports n the athletc department combned when you throw out the basketball team? Evdently not. And because of ths Bobby Sbla gets hurt and next season the UConn football team wll contnue to lose both games and money. t just does not make sense. But on the other band, lookng at the past four years, t appears logc has never been the football program's strong sut. M.D./D.V.M. Deqree-Europe/U^JV. 12 12 Daly Campus Supplement, Wednesday, May 3, 1978 Ken Hodge: Chasng a dream he By GREGG RUSSO "The goal, hs 16th of the year, by number 8 Ken Hodge", the loudspeaker shouts at New Haven's Veteran Memoral Colseum, home of New Haven Nghthawks of the Amercan Hockey League (A.H.L.). "Dd he say Ken Hodge, Dad?" the young fan asks hs father. "s that the same Ken Hodge that played for the Bruns?" " thnk you heard wrong," answers hs father. "Let me check the program." The boy's father takes the program and almost nervously fngers to the players nformaton secton, hopng he won't fnd the name of hs boyhood dol playng n the mnor leagues. He can't beleve hs eyes. The young man was rght. There s no denyng t. n the world of hte Amercan Hockey League, a home for rookes or has-beens, s the one tme Brun great, 33-year-old Ken Hodge. "Hodge s certanly no rooke", thnks the boy's father. "Well, 'm certanly not a has-been", would undoubtedly be the ansere gven by Ken Hodge. At 33-years-old when most people are just begnnng to move up the executve ladder, Ken Hodge has taken a step backward. After 13 Natonal Hockey League (N.H.L.) seasons. Ken Hodge fnds hmself n a very new world, the world of the mnor league hockey. Why not gve up, and qut whle you're on top? Sound good to you? Well, t's the last thnkng n the world that Ken Hodge s gong to do, and he wll be the frst to tell you so. n professonal hockey, the average player's age s slghtly less than 24 and the average career expectancy of a player s just more than three years. Wth ths n mnd, t s dffcult to wonder why Ken Hodge s stll playng, even though he s ten years over the average age, and has been playng 11 years longer than the statstcs say he should. Not only that, hs s forced to play, for the frst tme n hs lfe, n the mnor leagues. All thngs seem to ndcate that he wll never degy the statstcs and play N.H.L. hockey agan. Why bother playng? Why not make a graceful ext? Somethng keeps hm gong. Exactly what even Hodge hmself really doesn't know. One thng's for sure, t s a lot more than the three years he has left on $100,000 dollars-plus contract, although that s ndeed a factor on hs decson to keep playng nstead of retrng. "When frst heard the news that was beng sent down to play wth the Nghthawks. thought about retrng, but then thought about my famly. As long as 1 am playng hockey, have securty, and no one can argue wth securty. Where else can make money lke ths. Let's face t, 33 s not that old," says Hodge. Ken Hodge s not the only one who feels that 33 s too young to retre. So does Dr. Allen Brush, professor of Physology at the Unversty of Connectcut. "Your body doesn't really start the damagng aspect of the agng process untl age 40", says Dr. Brush. "t s at ths age when your legs may begn to go." "By 'gong' mean that your jonts, not your muscles as most people thnk, begn to deterorate. There s a proten loss n the tssue, and the proten s n turn replaced by chemcal substance. Ths s how the legs begn to weaken. The more abuse your body takes the qucker ths can happen. One safeguard aganst ths s to keep n shape. Your legs should have deterorated very lttle by age 33." he sad. How could the New York Rangers (parent club of the Nghthawks) have sent Hodge down'o Hs 350 goals and 150 asssts speak for themselves. He s also the eghth hghest scorng rght wng ever to play the game. "t's tough to tell why 'm here," Hodge says. "Maybe just don't ft nto ther plans rght now. All can do s just st and wat." St and wat s the last thng he s dong. Already ths year he has better than 16 goals, and an equally mpressv e number of asssts. He s seeng regular playng tme, and although hs teammates are not Esposto or Cashman they are more than adequate for Hodge. "They can get the puck to me when they have to, and they can score when get t to them", clams Hodge. "Nobody s really selfsh, because a goal s no more mportant than an assst. The conversaton keeps turnng to one man subject why hasn't he retred lke most athletes n hs poston would have done. When the checks start hurtng, that's when wll retre. Hell, look at (Gorde) Howe of the Whalers, he's almost fftv." sad HOdee. But Howe plays tor a major team, not the Amercan Hockey League where the general thought s that there s no place for a 33-year-old man. After all, t s full of rookes and as Hodge hmself admts, "the future of the N.H.L. s rght here." Why shouldn't he step down and let someone else become the star that he once was? The answer s very smple. The star that people thnk he was s the star that Hodge feels he stll s. Hodge has adjusted hmself to the role of a rooke who s fghtng for a spot on the parent team's roster. He wats for the phone call that wll promote hm to the place where hs name became a household word. Denyng that he was sent to New Haven to be more of a teacher than a player, he expresses confdence that he stll obtans the sklls needed to become a top notch N.H.L. ^ once agan. No one can predct the future. However, Hodge seems to be qute optmstc about what the future wll hold n store for hm. "Everybody has looked at ths negatvely. prefer to look at ths postvely. My game has not changed at all. am stll postve that can play n the N.H.L. agan, and feel that can be there rght now. Lke sad before, really don't know why 'm down here now." Probably more than anythng else, t s the thought that he can agan be a good bg league hockey player, a thought he has had snce hs chldhood days n hs hometown of Lnfeld, Mass, that keeps makng Ken Hodge put the skates on day n and day out. " feel that the future wll take care of tself. don't know where 'll be next year, but unless somthng that don't know about happens, 'm not ready to retre." A factor that Hodge ponts to n regard to hs decson not to retre, even f t means beng wth the Nghthawks, s the way n whch the organzaton s run. He s not only happy because he s playng hockey, but where he plays t makes a bg dfference. "Parker (MacDonald) has been very good to me. He's a fne coach and general manager. He has gven me a few more prvleges than he would gve rookes. He lets me see my famly (stll lvng n Boston) whenever can. t makes lvng here a lot easer." The best way to see why Hodge has not retred s to see hm play. He runs the wnd sprnts wth the younger players and never breathes harder than them. Hs passes are as accurate as any player n New Haven. Yet hte boos persst from the fans. t s very dffcult to see why, as Hodge has been an asset to the team. "As long as 'm here, my man concern s to help the Nghthawks wn the Calder Cup (symbolc of the best team n the A.H.L.). 'm here to play, and 'm here to wn. At ths tme 'm not puttng the Rangers n my future, or keepng them only n my past. My man concern s today," Hodge perssts. The players have been flterng on to the ce for better than 45 mnutes. Hodge stll remans on the bence. People that many have never heard of," names lke Stefansk, Sacharuk and Bednarsk take the ce; names that wll probably be heard very soon n the N.H.L. Suddenly a whstle blows, and the players lne up. Hodge spts, and puts on hs gloves. For the frst tme n close to an hour, he looks up from the ground. "The only thng don't want s for people to thnk 'm nothng more than a mercenary, because 'm not. People ask f 'm ready to retre. Hell, no, and untl 1 am. 'll stll be playng the game," Hodge says almost n anger towards those that feel he should retre. He jumps over the boards to jon the team. He comes back. 22 22 Daly Campus Supplement, Wednesday, May 3, 1978 Begn says srael poston unchanged destructon of Czechoslovaka LOS ANGELES (UP) Despte a change n atmosphere. srael's proposals for a Mddle East settlement reman the same as they were when the Egyptan-srael talks broke down n January, Prme Mnster Menachem Begn ndcated Tuesday. Begn spoke at a luncheon meetng attended by about 150 heads of unverstes, corporatons and cvc organzatons. He s on a tour markng the 30th annversary of srael's ndependence. THE WRELNE Begn's tone was n marked contrast to that he had used at a mass rally Monday nght when he spoke of "glad tdngs" to a frendly crowd of about At the luncheon, where he was ntroduced by Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr., and Mayor Tom Bradley, he was subdued but apparently unyeldng on several key ponts: He would nsst on srael control of the Gaza Strp whch he descrbed as a "loaded pstol." Arsonsts strke Atlantc Cty ATLANTC CTY. N.J. (UP) Arsonsts touched off eght fres n a resdental secton of ths resort cty Tuesday, forcng a famly vth two small chldren to plunge for ther lves from ther mult-mllon-dollar condomnum nto the chlly waters of the nland Waterway. Ten persons were njured, none serously, n the early mornng arson spree. Polce questoned several men suspected of startng the fres n the Chelsea secton. They were not dentfed mmedately, nor was any possble motve dsclosed. One of the buldngs ht was the Bay Colony Condomnum where plumbng contractor Paul Labov lved n a luxury townhouse apartment overlookng a bay of the nland Waterway. The Labovs were sleepng when the blaze erupted at 5 a.m. and blocked the front entrance. Lobov, 31, alerted hs wfe, Debbe, 29, and ther chldren Jennfer 5, and Paul, 1, and all four plunged from a balcony nto the water. Labov's mother sad her son grabbed the baby and swam to a dock and then went back and got hs daughter. There would be "self-rule" n the West Bank area but contnued srael soveregnty. He used the same arguement aganst "self determnaton" on the West Bank that he had used n January when the Jerusalem foregn mnsters' conference broke down. He argued that self determnaton apples only to natons "and not to parts of natons" and he agan used the analogy of how the German nsstence on self determnaton n the Audentenland had led to the n He sad the result of the Palestnan state would be a "mortal danger" to srael and he repeated, "everythng s negotable except the destructon of srael." However, he added, n an explanaton of the srael proposals, " assure you we shall lsten to every dea. We shall not tre. We shall contnue n ths effort." Polce capture Brgade suspect ROME (UP) Polce backed by army troops n bulletproof jackets Tuesday captured a Red Brgades suspect lnked to the 47-day-old kdnappng of former Premer Aldo Moro. The Vatcan refused to confrm or deny reports that Moro sent a personal letter to Pope Paul V. And the Moro famly charged the government's refusal to deal wth the kdnappers n effect was "ratfyng" ther "death sentence" on hm. Paramltary state detectves, fnancal polce and squads of solders wearng bulletproof jackets arrested Lbero Maesano, an alleged leftst gun runner, when he went to vst hs mother and sster n the Rome busness dstrct of Eur. Maesano was arrested n Swtzerland n 1974 for tryng to smuggle a Swss machne gun nto taly wth Valero Mucc, one of nne people sought for the Moro kdnappng March 16 n whch hs fve polce guards were klled. Whle actually n hs late fortes, hs burly beard and leather chapeau along wth the black turtle-neck and the gold medallon on hs chest gve hm a youthful, boheman ar that sets hm apart from those around hm. Looks aren't all that dstngush Phl Woods, however. Hs major dstncton s the fact that he s t r one ot today's leadng sax players. Most jaxx tans need no ntroducton to ths gfted performer, who has blessed us wth over 20 fne albums over the past two decades, ncludng several Grammy Award nomnatons, and even a wnner n Even f you've never heard of Phl Woods, you've probably heard hs majestc sax playng, whch clmaxes Blly Joel's recent smash, "Just The Way You Are". Ths past Sunday, the Hartford Jazz Socety brought Phl Woods and hs Quartet to the Sheraton Tobacco Valley nn n Wndsor for a sensatonal two hour performance. The group played wth breath-takng faclty on a wde varety of materal, from screamng bop numbers lke Dzzy Gllespe's "Shaw Nuff" to tender ballands lke the classk "Body and Soul". Tough Wood's playng was superb throughout the evenng, he was truly at hs best durng the slower numbers, whose relaxed pace allowed hm to add sparklng.new flourshes at every turn of phrase. The other members of the Quartet, who have been wth Woods snce early 1974, also played adeptly. Partcularly pleasng was panst Mke Mello, who demonstrated hs talent to the fullest by transformng the rusty old "Trolley Song" nto a shnng new model n a beautful ten-mnute solo pece. Bassst Steve Glmore and drummer Bll Goodwn also played qute skllfully. Never once dd ther solos slow the pace of the musc. Together, ths group cooked up some of the fnest musc beng made today. Musc fans who are at all nterested n contemporary, non-electrc jazz are strongly recommended to seek out Wood's 1976 release, "The Phl Woods Sx 'lve' From the Showboat" whch captures the sound of Wood's group wth joyful precson. 30C THE FLM SOCETY 31C 1 PRESENTS Wed. 24 *< Daly Campus Supplement, Wednesday. May 3, 1978 Thousands thrll to Sunday's sounds m Tower of Power says t wth soul. 'Conn students gathered for concert. Staff Photo by Phl Knudsen mm BOG concert a success By CHRS MTCHELL and CARL GLENDENNG Sunday's outdoor concert, sponsored by the Board of Governors (BOG), was one of the largest open-ar partes ever held on campus. n spte of blusterng wnds and a last-mnute change of locaton, t was also one of the most successful concerts ever held on campus. The concert was attended by more than students, too; apparently, several commercal rado statons n the state got hold of the news about the concert, and broadcast t throughout Connectcut. The large crowd n attendance at Sunday's show proved t. BOG handled the addtonal nflux of people well; the concert was run smoothly from begnnng to end. t s rare for any concert to begn wthn half an hour of the announced startng tme. BOG began Sunday's show at 12:15 p.m., only 15 mnutes late. The bands themselves were well-receved. Frst on-stage was the Lenny Whte Group, whose 45 mnute set of jazz-rock fuson featured Whte's precson drummng, long a facet of Return to Forever untl that group's demse n The Good Rats, based n Long sland, had a lvely stage-show. Ther lead vocalst, Pepp Marchello, ran amolonstage. When he wasn't wavng a baseball bat n the ar, or tossng rats out of a garbage can, he was supportng the lead gutarst on hs shoulders. Strange. The New Rhythm and Blues Quartet, better known as N.R.B.Q., followed the Good Rats but were no match for the former's gonzo stage presence. Throughout ther performance, N.R.B.Q. reled heavly on materal from ther new "At Yankee Stadum" album, gnorng requests to play ther older, more famlar materal. Pano player Terry Adams provded the only vsual entertanment wth a mult-colored bathrobe that would make Joseph's brothers scrap ther tunc plan. Tower of Power started ther set on tme, but the brsk wndy weather came as a surprse to the band members who quckly donned ther jackets, gloves, and scarves. The audence had been relatvely quet before T.O.P. appeared, but rose to ther feet and danced durng the show. Unlke N.R.B.Q., ther performance was a well balanced mxtue of new materal from "We Came To Play" and older favortes lke "Down to the Nghtclub" and "So Very Hard To Go" n the end, the "cold" weather (welcome to New England, guys) forced the group to fnsh ther show n less than an hour. Perhaps the sngle most mportant fact about Sunday's show was that t happened at all. The last-mnute move from the Grad Feld up to W-lot would have been fatal f BOG was any less organzed. They pulled t off, though. The two o'clock startng tme that the Admnstraton had tred to mpose upon BOG was nullfed by the move, and avoded the planned cancellaton of the frst two groups. The move was prompted by complants by organzers of the Renassance Far, whch was beng held on the Student Unon Mall. The admnstraton decded to move the concert nstead of the far X Past was reborn at Renassance Far Knghts, bards entertan students By ROBERT HAMLTON The Renassance was reborn Sunday afternoon on the Student Unon Green complete wth the musc, art, food and fghtng of the perod. The Socety for Creatve Anachronsm held a tournament nvolvng a dozen knghts n full dress. Ther swords, axes, maces, shelds, and protectve clothng were all home-made, sad Joyce Colbert, Assstant Seneschal of the UConn chapter of the socety. Ross Lally, a 1975 graduate of UConn and a member of the socety, sad the weapons were all made of rattan (a type of lght-weght sword) and rubber to prevent any serous njures, but "you can stll get a good bruse from them". Lally sad the weapons were of "the sze, shape, and heft of the orgnals." Near the student Unon Buldng, a crcus featured tghtrope walkng, jugglng, joustng, on stlts,a nd a clown. Bll Fnley, who spent four years wth a Crcus Wagon Theatre and now teaches Crcus Technques at UConn, sad the acts were "knd of a fnal project for the students" n hs course. Sr Garth (Phl Kramer), the juggler, sad t was "a lttle wndy to juggle", but managed to perform a number of trcks anyway. The tghtrope walker, Lady Kate (Carolyn Clark), spent a lot of her tme teachng all the chldren who wanted to learn to walk the tghtrope. Set-up near the pharmacy buldng had booths, a soothsayer, a pottery shop, a slversmth, an herb shop, a brass rubbng booth, and a booth sellng medeval games. scenes trom Shakespeare's "Merry Wves of Wndsor" were performed, and a booth put on Punch and Judy shows through the afternoon. n the mddle of the Green, muscans performed on nstruments of the perod, such as sackbutts, tabors, and recorders. Dr. Bruck Bellngham of the Musc Dept. the organzer of the Renassance Far, sad he thought the event was a great success, especally consderng the coldness of hte ar. He sad the responses to questonnares handed out at the far had been "very favorable so far". He also sad he hope to hold another far next year wth the help of the Board of Governors. Staff Photo by Phl Knudsen Crcus technques were part of the attractons a» the RenasNanr** Far.
