2 2018 Banquet In college I got to attend close to 115 Michigan State basketball games, including 3 Final Fours. For the majority of those games I sat in the first row, directly behind the MSU bench. I was a section leader for the IZZONE, the student cheering section at MSU, and in 2008 I even won a competition through Coca-Cola and was voted the top college basketball fan in the nation. Through this competition I got to work for the NCAA and Coke while writing about each and every March Madness game and even got to sit courtside at the Final Four and National Championship. My junior year we were losing a game to a really good Purdue team at home and I screamed about the offense set that we were continuing to attempt despite it being snuffed out play, after, play, after play. This was just after Halftime and Head Coach Tom Izzo turned around, stared right at me and said a handful of words that I cannot repeat and keep my job, followed by until you start coaching in the Big 10, you can shut your mouth. Now, I have zero aspirations to ever coach at a level that goes beyond across the street, but I can say with complete honesty that my team this year and my team last year are the closest things that I ll ever have to living up to Coach s callout. When the season started I was a little bit nervous about this team. Only 14 girls came out for tryouts and when I went around Hart to try and recruit more girls during the first week of school I heard a lot about some girls on this team being too cliquey and girls staying away because of the attitude of the team during the previous year. I immediately knew that we needed to focus in on goals that were bigger than wins and losses. As a teacher, theater director, and coach the biggest things that I have to fight on a daily basis are disrespecting the open and caring community that I try to build within my programs AND the constant battle to fight entitlement. This community should be welcoming, no matter what the talent level or level of experience is. Recently, I asked a couple of the girls if they thought I was a strict coach. They both answered, quickly and emphatically, YES. This has been a HUGE shift in my coaching and teaching attitude. I have never been called strict over anything in my life...however, once I got to know these incredible young ladies, I knew that in order to shift or change the culture of this team I would have to be different than how I am away from the Hart gym. The girls have responded and there are 14, kind hearted and caring young ladies in front of me. There are a few proud moments in this regard that I have noticed over the last few weeks: First, when one of our original players needed to leave the team, based on some family commitments, my girls hit the recruiting train, hard. They put the full-court-press on this tremendous track athlete who had never played the game of basketball before in her life. During the first few practices I worked with her one-on-one to try and develop some introductory skills and after that every other player on this team has worked with her to try and make her better and more confident!

3 The second proud moment came during the Teacher-Appreciation Game. The kind words that you girls wrote for some of the positive role models that you have in this building will turn that event into a yearly tradition. You made so many hard-working educators feel really special!! When I talk about this team to my colleagues I talk about growth. Growth on the court and off the court. On the court, the record speaks for itself. We lost our first game and even battled back with our signature full-court press, and fought until the very end. The 2nd game of the year was a close game as well, against a much improved Reuther team. After that, these girls were off to the races!! I have talked about how most teams HAVE to play defense and they HAVE to rebound...this team LIKES playing defense and they LIKE to box-out and rebound. The wins have been impressive, but your ability to bounce back after a loss, the first of your middle school careers, has been outstanding. I m so proud of this group and let s take a quick minute to recognize each of them personally!! #1 Maddie McGinley - Thank you for your on the court leadership. Your fiery personality and drive for success has been contagious to the rest of the team! You have been the captain of this team since the first day of tryouts and I m proud of how you have done in that role!! #2 Makenna Musser - I have never seen someone play help defense like Makenna. We do a defensive positioning drill each and every day and it is supposed to simulate how we play defense on every possession. Many times, once the speed of the game starts, that drill leaves all of our brains. That s not the case for Makenna...she may be the smallest girl on the court, but she is tough and is always there to help her teammates out on the defensive end!! #5 Kaeli Butcher - Speaking of toughness, Kaeli has been beat up a lot this year. Thank you for pushing through the injuries and the emotions that go with being banged up a bit and for being one of the toughest, most productive forwards that I have had the privilege of coaching! #11 Morgan Schmitz - New to Hart this year, comes a girl who I nicknamed the mosquito. This nickname comes from her knack for swarming her girls while playing defense and constantly attacking the rim on offense, AND from her ability to be goofy, playful and always ready to scrimmage. #20 Lilley Bosley - I watched this group play as 7th graders last year and I knew that we were getting a pretty talented weapon in Lilley Bosley. We have not had someone approach 200 points scoring in their middle school career, in over a decade, since Gabby Yurik, who went on to get a full-ride golf scholarship to MSU, approached the 2 Century mark. Scoring came easy for Lilley as a 7th grader and she could score baskets at will as girls around her were new to the game, a step slower, and 6 inches shorter than her. As we got into games this year it became clear that opponents had grown physically and in their game knowledge. Lilley made some

4 incredible adjustments to her own game and has been just as much of a threat this year as she was last year. #24 Sophia Hilton - I have had the privilege of teaching Sophia s brother, Adam, at SCHS over the last four years. Adam and Sophia couldn t be more different! While I have loved coaching and teaching both of them, Sophia is proof that raising daughters is way less stressful than raising sons! I challenged Sophia this year by having her run the point guard all season long. She has grown so much in this role and I am so proud of how well she has done in this role! #25 Lily Solek - Speaking of families that I have known well based on their siblings, Lily s sisters have been a part of my life for many years. Lily has decided to not live in the shadow of her older sisters and instead to walk right alongside them and create her own path. Lily, thank you for being one of the best leaders and human beings that I have ever coached! I cannot wait to get you over to SCHS to watch you continue to grow as an athlete and as a student! #31 Rose Helms - Rose was new to the game of basketball last year and you would never know it based on how she played this year. She scored the first basket of the season for us, as a member of the third string in our first game against West and she moved up to 2nd string by the 2nd game and has done great things all season long! #32 Sophie Biebuyck - Sophie was relatively new to the game when she tried out this year. She is a true student of the game who is always asking me how she can get better or picking Bosley s brain about how to do certain things. Sophie also has a contagious personality that others flock to! Thanks for always making others smile and for working so hard this year! #33 Sophia Franzone - Sophia aka Franny brings a fun and lively spirit to each and every practice and game. Her leadership has been contagious and she is one of our three team captains. Thank you for working hard every day and for being such a great role model for all of the girls on your team and on the 7th grade team. #34 Mia Carson - Coach Devo and I always meet before the season starts and talk about the upcoming season. When we talked about Mia Carson and he showed me the stats from last year, I was thinking she was going to be a solid role player on a good team. From day 1 of tryouts it became clear that she was going to be one of the best players on the entire team. That shows an incredible dedication to getting better in the offseason and adapting to a new style of play. Thanks for always working hard and it s been awesome to watch you grow as a basketball player. #43 Leah Yaldo - Leah gets things done on the basketball court, quietly and efficiently. Leah will never be the most vocal player, nor will she be the flashiest player, but she always gives it her all and has a tremendous basketball IQ. I have enjoyed coaching both Yaldo girls over the last few years and thank you for being drama free at all times!

5 #44 Alyssa Vettraino - Alyssa came in as the second leading scorer from the 7th grade team. She has evolved from a scorer to total team player on the first string. Thank you for working hard in any role that I have put you in and for never having a bad attitude in practice or during games. Just remember, the first word in jump shot is jump! #52 Kali Ward - Kali had never touched a basketball prior to our third week of the season and you would have no idea based on how well she has been playing over the last few weeks. Thank you for learning a new sport and for dedicating your fall to helping to make this team better!
