1 500-REBOUND CLUB LMU BASKETBALL 1. Jim Haderlein ,161 rebounds Jim Haderlein was ahead of his time in shattering LMU s career rebounding mark that was set in 1962 by Ed Bento. In celebrating the 30th anniversary of the record setting season (his final season was in 1971), Haderlein is the only player to average double-figure rebounds in each of his seasons at Loyola. Haderlein set the record in his first game of his senior season, and used the rest of that 15 rebounds-a-game season to pad his record. Hank Gathers, who sits at second all-time, led the entire nation in rebounds as a junior in with 13.7 per game. Haderlein s best season was also as a junior, averaging 17 per game (a school record). He is the only Lion to break the 1,000 mark in rebounds in his career. Haderlein, who is also on the 1,000-point list at LMU, was the Lions first true threat on all ends of the court. He was truly ahead of his day, not being matched until the Paul Westhead days so famous in LMU history Totals Hank Gathers rebounds Hank Gathers, who is the Lions all-time leading scorer, sits at second with 985 rebounds. As mentioned earlier, Gathers led the nation in rebounds with 13.7 in In that season, he averaged a nation-high 32.7 points per game. Only two other players in collegiate basketball history have led the nation in scoring and rebounds in the same season. Gathers holds the school record with 29 rebounds in a game against U.S. International in January of Totals Mark Armstrong rebounds Prior to the arrival of Hank Gathers, Mark Armstrong was the Lions go-to guy under the basket. He led the Lions with nine rebounds per game his junior season and was second behind Gathers his final season with 8.1 per game. Armstrong sat second all-time on the rebound list for three seasons before Gathers moved into second in the season. His senior season resulted in his best rebounding effort, going for 258 rebounds for an 8.1 per game average. He led the team in rebounds in 11 games, including a career-high 19 against San Francisco Totals Ed Bento rebounds With the Lions all-time winningest coach at the helm, Ed Bento was one of the top reasons Loyola won its first West Coast Athletic Conference Championship in Bento finished his career fourth all-time with 774 rebounds. He averaged 10 per game in his career, including 10.9 in his senior campaign. Bento, who also finished with 1,432 points, was a first-team all-conference selection in his final season. That year Bento set seven school records, including highest scoring average, most points scored in a season, most points scored in a game, most points scored in a half, most field goals made in a game and a season, and most rebounds. He grabbed 25 against Hawaii Totals Tom Ryan rebounds Joining forces with Ed Bento in , Tom Ryan s final season at Loyola, the Lions were nearly unbeatable under the basket. Ryan averaged 8.7 rebounds per game that season, and he and Bento combined for 483 rebounds that year. Ryan, a second-team allconference selection in his senior year, was third on the team in scoring that season. His best rebounding season, which ranks eighth all-time in LMU history, was his junior campaign in which he averaged a team high 13.4 boards per game. The season, in which the Lions tied for first in the conference, also earned Ryan second-team All-WCAC honors. 2 6. Matthew Knight Rebounds Matthew Knight was a two-time first-team All-West Coast Conference performer and finished his LMU career as one of the top players in program history. He finished his career with 1,466 points and 743 rebounds. Knight is just one of five players in LMU history to rank in the top-10 in both scoring and rebounds. The four-year career of Knight was defined by the double-double. Overall, he had two as a sophomore in , then broke out for 17 in He has six his final season for 25 total, ranking fifth all-time in LMU history. Knight finished second in the WCC in scoring at 16.5 points per game and second in rebounds at 7.7 his final season after leading the league in rebounding as a junior Totals Forrest McKenzie rebounds In his senior season, Forrest McKenzie helped the Lions to the top of the West Coast Conference in rebound margin at 6.1. The Lions, who finished second in the conference at 10-4 in , was tops in the conference with Following a redshirt season in , McKenzie was at the top of the individual list with a 7.8 average. He was also second in the league in scoring at 20.1 per game, only one of two players to score over 20 points a game in that season. McKenzie was a force in his junior season in when he was the top rebounder in 13 of the Lions 27 games. In addition to his 6.4 boards per game that season, he averaged 20.9 points and scored a career-high 35 against St. Mary s. On his way to 2,060 points in his career, McKenzie averaged more than 20 points in all but his freshman season Totals Brad Dean rebounds Brad Dean had his best season in his final campaign in a Lions uniform, scoring 16.7 points per game and gathering 9.4 rebounds a game. He led the team in boards, which ranks 18th all-time at LMU, and was second in scoring. He broke onto the Loyola scene in his sophomore season with 10.1 rebounds per game, 15th all-time at LMU. Dean set his personal career record with 20 rebounds against CS Northridge in that season. He would lead the team in rebounds in seven games Totals Steve Smith rebounds In only two seasons, Steve Smith was nearly unstoppable under the basket for the Lions. He was so consistent that he grabbed 357 boards in each of this two seasons. His 14.3 average in is third all-time at LMU, while his senior season s 13.7 is tied for sixth. In the same season that saw Brad Dean have his breakthrough sophomore year, Smith led the team in 17 of 26 games, while he tied a personal best of 22 against St. Mary s. He was even better in the league that season, averaging 14.8 boards in WCAC games to earn him second-team All-WCAC honors. His first season at Loyola earned him a first-team all-conference selection as he average 14.3 rebounds and 21.1 points. He led the team in scoring and rebounding in each of his two seasons Totals Mike Yoest rebounds In starting all 32 games for the Lions in his senior season, Mike Yoest was third on the Lions in with 253 rebounds (7.9 per game). His successful final season earned him All-WCAC honors, selection to the WCAC Tournament team, and his performance in January earned him Player of the Month honors, including Player of the Week honors on Jan. 4, Yoest s junior season was perhaps his finest, scoring at the time LMU s 13th highest single-season point total with 541 points. He would break that with 562 the following season. In , he would lead the conference in scoring, tied with Pepperdine s Eric White. His final two seasons he averaged over seven rebounds a game, and in his four year career proved consistent, averaging 6.0 rebounds per game Totals #LMULions

3 11. Greg Hunter rebounds Greg Hunter was one of the rare players to play solid minutes all four years of his college career. In all but his freshman season, Hunter averaged in double figures, finishing his career with a 12.6 per game average. His junior season was perhaps his finest statistically, as he scored 472 points in the 26-game season. In addition to his scoring that season, he also led the team with an 8.5 rebounds per game. He finished his career with 1,289 points and 681 rebounds, making him one of the few LMU greats to be above both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds Totals Ime Oduok rebounds The Eket, Nigeria, native was one of the most dominant rebounders in recent LMU history. A consistent rebounder who averaged 7.5, 9.0 and 8.8 rebounds per game in his three years at LMU was a first-team all-conference selection his senior campaign, helping coach John Olive to earn Coach of the Year honors. Oduok led the team in rebounds and scoring in his senior season. His junior campaign was his best under the basket with a 9.0 average. He also led the team in rebounds that season, and was the 10th to duplicate the feat in back-to-back seasons. His first season at LMU set the tone for things to come, as he set his personal record of 22 rebounds against Buffalo, and finished second on the team behind Wyking Jones Totals Ashley Hamilton rebounds Ashley Hamilton finished his career having played in 113 games (ranked t-7th all-time), making 94 starts (4th all-time). With 15 points at San Diego on Jan. 16, he became the 34th Lions to score 1,000 points in his career. He finished his final campaign averaging 12.9 ppg and a team-best 7.1 rpg after going for his 21 points and eight rebounds to start the Lions WCC tourney run, which also included his seventh career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. He finishes with 1,172 points and 654 rebounds and is the 14th Lion to earn 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. Hamilton is now ranked 22nd all-time in scoring, 13th in rebounds, tied for 12th with 334 made free throws (tied with teammate Anthony Ireland) and 15th with 57 blocks / / / / / TOTAL / Elton Mashack rebounds Elton Mashack became the first player in a decade to score both 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds in his LMU career. Despite suffering through several coaching changes and probably some of the tougher circumstances than any of the other 10 members of the 1, club, Mashack would finish a stellar four-year career earning two All-Conference honors (sophomore and senior seasons). Mashack became the 22nd person in LMU history to earn 500 rebounds in his career with the Lions. His best season came as a junior, grabbing more than seven rebounds per game Totals Kenny Hotopp rebounds Kenny Hotopp was the last Lion to lead the team in rebounds for two consecutive seasons, achieving that feat in the two years after Ime Oduok did it. He averaged 6.8 boards his senior year and 7.3 his junior year. He was fourth in the conference in and third in He had a personal high of 15 rebounds against Cal State Fullerton in his junior season Totals LMU Men s Basketball Media Almanac 91

4 15. Robert Cox rebounds Robert Cox was another two-year star for the Lions. He averaged over 10 rebounds in each of his two seasons, having his best season with 11.4 per game in As Hotopp was the last to repeat as rebound champ, Cox was the first. He also led the team in scoring in both of his seasons, becoming the first player to lead the team in both categories in consecutive seasons. He was one of the first to dominate the record books, setting seven records in his first season and another two his final year Totals Dick Schiendler rebounds Dick Schiendler was the first of a very elite list in leading the team in rebounds in three consecutive seasons. He was later joined by Jim Haderlein, Greg Hunter and Hank Gathers. Schiendler was dominant in his first year as a sophomore, grabbing 7.2 boards and putting in 13.8 points per game. He dropped nearly an entire rebound his junior season, but still led the team. His senior year, like so many other Lions, was his best. He led the team in scoring and rebounding for the third straight year. He is one of only two players to pull the triple-double, leading the team in both rebounding and scoring in three straight seasons. Jim Haderlein was the other Totals Ken Peterson rebounds Ken Peterson was a dominant rebounder in his three seasons at Loyola. However, despite averaging 7.7 boards over three seasons, he never led the team. However, he became one of the best in the history of the program because of his consistency. He earned honorable mention honors in the conference his final season, ranking third in both rebounds (6.3) and points (12.3) Totals Dick Zembal rebounds Thanks to his team leading 8.6 rebounds per game in his senior season, Dick Zembal jumped into the 500-rebound list. He was one of five all-conference selections in the season, earning honorable mention honors. The team finished second in the conference standings at 11-3 and 19-6 overall. In that final season he also added to the teams scoring with a 14.9 average Totals Dick Sebek rebounds Playing with future NBA coach Rick Adelman, Dick Sebek managed to put up impressive numbers in his three-year career at Loyola. He finished his senior season as a second-team all-conference selection. That season he finished with 209 rebounds for an 8.4 average, which was third on the squad. He was also third that season in scoring, averaging 14.3 per game. At 6-5, Sebek anchored a squad that was one of the best in the league in rebounding. His best year under the basket came in as he averaged nine boards a game. He finished leading the team in the category and finished second to Adelman in scoring with a 13.2 average. Despite only playing in 12 games his first season at the varsity level, Sebek managed an 8.0 average Totals Drew Viney rebounds Fourteenth player in LMU history to earn three All-WCC honors, earning first team in and and honorable mention as a junior in Scored 535 points in his only full season, playing all 32 games in , leading the Lions to its first postseason since All over the career record books at LMU, and is the 13th player in LMU history to crack 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. 5 21. John Kurtz rebounds John Kurtz was a quiet leader for the Lions basketball team, finishing with an 11.3 average under the boards over the span of three seasons. Finishing second behind Cal Garvin in rebounding his senior season, Kurtz also finished No. 2 in scoring with a 10.1 average. He finished each of his three years scoring in double digits. His 12.8 points and 13.8 rebounds led the team his junior season, as he set six Loyola records. The record-breaking season included points in a game (35), most rebounds in a season and rebound average Totals Anthony Ireland rebounds Anthony Ireland played every game in his tenure at LMU, playing 132 games with 125 starts, both LMU records. He was named firstteam All-WCC in , , and , making him just the third Lion in program history to be named a first-team selection three times. He earned LMU s first NABC All-District honor in just his second season of college basketball in , and then repeated the honor his final season in He finished with 2,169 points, 557 assists, 517 rebounds and 200 steals, ranking third, third, 23rd and 2nd all-time at LMU. No other Lion has those combined numbers. He finished his career ranked in the top-10 in 13 statistical categories at LMU and is one of just five players in West Coast Conference history to score at least 2,000 points in a career. He finished with a career-high 34 points against Santa Clara (Jan. 4, 2014), 11 rebounds at SMU (Nov. 11, 2012), 12 assists vs. South Total 3-Point F-Throws Rebounds Scoring / / / / TOTAL / Dakota St. (Nov. 9, 2013) and seven steals agasinst SCU (Mar. 8, 2013) in the WCC tournament. 23. David Benaderet rebounds The 1950s and 60s produced some of Loyola s most dominant rebounders. David Benaderet was one of the more consistent players under the basket, averaging 6.2, 7.2 and 7.3 rebounds a game in each of his three seasons at Loyola. Benaderet helped the Lions to a 16-9 season in his first year at the varsity level, finishing third on the team in scoring and fourth in rebounds. His fast start transcended into his junior season, as he finished as a second-team all-conference selection and third on the team in rebounds and first in scoring. His final season in saw him finish second on the team with 7.3 boards per game Totals Calvin Garvin rebounds Calvin Garvin s final two seasons saw the 6-6 center take center stage under the basket, averaging 9.1 and 9.5 boards a game in his junior and senior seasons, respectively. Garvin finished only one of his seasons ( ) scoring in the double figures. However, his 266 boards finished first on the team. He finished second with 9.1 his junior season Totals Bill Wagner rebounds Bill Wagner earned the Lions only all-conference honor in the season, claiming a second-team selection due to his 13.1 rebound average. In addition to leading the team in boards, Wagner finished tops in scoring. Accomplishing the feat in only two seasons, Wagner averaged 10.6 boards a game over his career.
