ASSOCIATED PRESS Jets, Dolphins clinging to playoff hopes in AFC hunt (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press November 28, EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) A lot has happened since London. Daily Clips Cont. The New York Jets were feeling pretty good on the flight back from over the pond after improving to 3-1 with a victory over the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 4. Todd Bowles' bunch would win the following week, too, topping Washington and getting off to a surprising 4-1 start. Meanwhile, the loss cost Joe Philbin his job, with Dan Campbell taking over as interim coach of the struggling Dolphins. The Jets (5-5) are 1-4 since, mired in a stretch of inconsistency that has seen them slip from early-season sensations to trying to remain in the playoff hunt. Must-win at MetLife Stadium on Sunday? "No, I like to stay away from that term," quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said. "Every game, we're out there trying to win." But a victory would go a long way in helping get New York back on track. The Jets are tied with Houston and Buffalo on the outside looking in and the Texans and Bills each have the tiebreaker after wins over New York the last two weeks. "I think we're awake," Bowles said when asked if the team needed a wakeup call. "That's the problem. I just think we need to execute better." The Dolphins (4-6) haven't been to the playoffs since 2008, and might need to sweep their final six games to end the drought. "Everybody in this locker room believes we're going to win out and make the playoffs," center Mike Pouncey said. The Dolphins are 3-3 under Campbell, who has something in common with Bowles they have both been interim coaches with Miami. Bowles took over for the fired Tony Sparano in Miami heads to New York having won its last three visits to the Meadowlands and six of its past seven. "We are more aggressive than we were the first time they played us, and for the most part we've been able to stay in games," Campbell said. "That game got out of control on us and we ended up being onedimensional the last time we played them, which is kudos to them." Here are some other things to know for this AFC East showdown: IMPACT PLAYERS: After a slow start, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has become the dominating force the Dolphins were looking for when they signed him to a $114 million, six-year contract. In the past two games, Suh has 17 tackles, including five for a loss. Defensive end Olivier Vernon has also made an impact lately, with 10 quarterback hurries in the past two weeks. Suh shrugged off praise for the tandem. 2 P a g e

"It hasn't been good enough for us to win consistently," he said. "That's all that matters. If individuals won games, we'd have a lot of wins under our belt." FAMILIAR FACE: After being waived by the Jets on Tuesday, linebacker Quinton Coples was claimed by the Dolphins the next day. He'll be used as a pass-rushing end in Miami's defense, a role some thought the 2012 first-round draft pick was better suited for. And, Coples could make an immediate impact for his new team against his former teammates. "If we can get him up to speed," Campbell said, "we plan on using him." REVIS ISLAND CLOSED: Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is dealing with a concussion he suffered at Houston last Sunday and will not play. Revis was going through the NFL's concussion protocol while sitting out practice all week. Marcus Williams will likely start in Revis' place opposite Antonio Cromartie. Bowles said the defensive scheme won't change with Revis out. "You tinker with certain things on the side, one way or the other, but the game plan will be the game plan," Bowles said. SOLID IVORY: Chris Ivory had the best game of his career the last time he faced the Dolphins, running for 166 yards and a touchdown. He hasn't topped 100 yards since and has only two touchdowns in that span. The Jets need Ivory to get back in gear against Miami. "They run hard and they've done a lot of positive things," Suh said of Ivory and the Jets' ground game. "So we've got to first and foremost combat their run." SLUGGISH DOLPHINS: Ryan Tannehill and Miami's offense have scored more than 20 points just twice this season in Campbell's first two games as interim coach: at Tennessee and over Houston at home. Points have been tough to come by the last four weeks, with Miami scoring a total of 58 in four games: a 36-7 loss at New England, a defeat at Buffalo, a victory at Philadelphia, and a loss to Dallas. Not helping matters: The Dolphins, ranked last in the AFC in third-down conversions at 28 percent, went 1 for 10 against Dallas. Jets rookie Devin Smith staying confident despite struggles (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) Devin Smith's confidence in himself has been tested several times this season. Injuries, drops and missed opportunities have all made for a shaky start for the New York Jets rookie wide receiver. "It's had its ups and downs, but that's just life," Smith said Friday. "It happens to everyone, so I'm just going to take it in stride and keep working every single day to get better, and just know that my opportunity and my time are going to come." The Jets drafted the speedster out of Ohio State in the second round, envisioning Smith to add a vertical element to Chan Gailey's offense a guy who could create mismatches on the outside and come up with big, game-changing plays. 3 P a g e

Well, the Jets are still waiting. So is Smith. He has just seven catches for 82 yards, with his longest play a 22-yard grab against Buffalo two weeks ago. Dropped passes have some fans souring already on Smith, who had two of those in Houston, including a sure-thing 46-yard touchdown that hit his hands and fell to the turf. "We expect him to come down with that, but he didn't," fellow receiver Brandon Marshall said. "But when you lose or make a bad play, you can't put your head down, and when you make a good play you can't hang from the rafters." Smith fumbled away a kick return against the Bills that was returned for a touchdown, another play that chipped away at the self-assurance of a player who oozed it while making one big catch after another in college. "We've got to keep letting him have the opportunity," Gailey said. "The biggest thing is he was open. If he's open, he'll eventually catch it. I think he just needs to get his confidence back. I haven't lost confidence in him. I've just got to make sure that he keeps confidence in himself." Marshall and Eric Decker have taken Smith under their wings, insisting that the young receiver not dwell on his mistakes. "That's one big thing, not just him but everybody in the locker room (has said), just telling me to keep my confidence up, keep my head up," Smith said. "That's kind of what's been keeping me up is all my teammates rallying around me..." Smith needs to learn from his miscues, they tell him, but he can't keep them festering in the back of his mind. "He got thrown into the deep end fast," Marshall said. "He just hasn't been able to make that one play. But comparing him from the first half of the season to now is night and day." Smith missed a large chunk of training camp with broken ribs and a collapsed lung, suffered while making an athletic play during practice. He spent a few weeks hardly being able to sleep and quickly fell behind in learning the offense because he wasn't physically able to work. By the time Smith came back, it was already Week 3 and Ryan Fitzpatrick was the quarterback, not Geno Smith, whom the receiver worked with a lot during the summer. "It hurt a lot," Devin Smith said of the missed time. "A lot of it was timing-wise with the quarterback and receiver and stuff like that and understanding how the offense is supposed to go. But, for now, I feel like I'm caught up and making plays in practice. Now, I've just got to convert it to games." Marshall dealt with a similar situation while he was in Chicago, when Alshon Jeffery was slowed by injuries and a lack of production as a rookie. Jeffery finished with just 24 catches for 367 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games in The next year, the receiver broke out with 89 receptions for 1,421 yards and seven TDs. He had 85 catches, including 10 touchdowns, last year. "I think the last couple of weeks, he has been getting into a groove in practice," Marshall said of Smith. "You're seeing a better Devin in meetings and practice, taking things we're saying in the film room and transitioning to the field." Smith has been targeted 22 times by Fitzpatrick, but 15 came in the rookie's first two games. He was targeted four times against the Texans, but had no catches and the two drops. "He was hurt after the game," Gailey said, "but as the week has gone on, he's gone back to work, so that's been a positive." 4 P a g e

Smith insists he knows the offense now. It's all about finishing plays. That means catching passes when they come to him. "I know my time is coming," Smith said. "So, I'm just going to stay patient and when the opportunity comes, just take advantage of it. Revis to sit out Jets game vs. Dolphins with concussion (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) Revis Island is closed for the weekend. Cornerback Darrelle Revis will not play in the New York Jets' game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday because he is still dealing with a concussion. He remains in the NFL's concussion protocol and must be cleared by doctors before he can practice with the team. "He's doing a little better each day," coach Todd Bowles said Friday, "but not well enough for physical activity." Revis was injured during the Jets' loss at Houston last Sunday and has not practiced since. Bowles said the star cornerback comes to the facility for treatment in the morning and then is sent home. Marcus Williams will likely start in Revis' place opposite Antonio Cromartie in the secondary. "Any time you lose a guy like that, you lose a one-on-one master matchup guy," Bowles said. "But we have other guys who can play and have played and will have to step in." Williams is in his second season with the Jets after signing with New York last year following a stint with Houston. He has played in nine games this season, including one start each at strong safety in place of an injured Calvin Pryor, and at cornerback in place of an injured Cromartie. "I wouldn't call it 'strange,' I would call it 'fun,'" Williams said of playing throughout the secondary this season. "Just to go out there and play different positions, it's probably been tough on other teams because you probably never know where I'm going to be." He leads the Jets with four interceptions to go along with 17 total tackles, 1 1/2 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. "I like his poise," Bowles said. "He's very patient out there. The moment is not too big for him. The ball finds him, No. 1. Very instinctive, very smart player." Williams is stepping into big shoes, though, with Revis not playing. Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins' offense could look to test Williams early. Bowles said the Jets would not change their scheme despite not having Revis in the lineup. "I don't feel any pressure," Williams said. "It's just going out there and playing football." Bowles acknowledged he knew nothing about Williams before he took over as Jets coach. Williams was an undrafted free agent last year out of North Dakota State, where he set the school record with 21 career interceptions. With solid performances every day in practice and on game days, he has quickly earned the trust of Bowles and his coaching staff. "He's been consistent from Day 1," Bowles said. "When you put him in, he just makes plays." 5 P a g e

Center Nick Mangold was a full participant for the second straight day and will play Sunday after suffering a deep cut to his right hand against the Texans that required six or seven stitches. Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson (hamstring) will also play after sitting out last weekend. Safety Dion Bailey is listed as doubtful and could miss his third straight game with a high ankle sprain. NEWSDAY Darrelle Revis out vs. Dolphins after suffering concussion (Greg Logan) Newsday November 28, FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Cornerback Darrelle Revis has been declared out of the Jets' game against Miami on Sunday at MetLife Stadium because he still is going through the concussion protocol as the result of an injury suffered this past Sunday in Houston. But coach Todd Bowles said the only difference in the Jets' game plan is that Marcus Williams will start at cornerback. Revis and Williams were beaten for touchdowns by Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins as the Jets (5-5) lost for the fourth time in their past five games. Bowles said Revis was at the practice facility Friday morning but was sent home again when practice began, and the coach expressed confidence in Williams, who leads the Jets with four interceptions. "I like his poise," Bowles said. "He's very patient, the moment's not too big for him, the ball finds him, very instinctive, very smart player. You put him in and he just makes plays... You only have to tell him things once. He's been consistent since the day I met him." Bowles could have started veteran Buster Skrine in Revis' place, but he prefers to keep Skrine at nickel corner. That way only one position in the secondary is affected, and Williams has become something of a "Mr. Fix-It" this season. He was called upon to play safety when Calvin Pryor was injured as well as cornerback. "It's been fun playing different positions," Williams said. "It's probably [tough] on other teams because you never know where I'm going to be. Coach said today, 'If you're going to be a utility guy, it means you're a smart guy.' So I take it with pride, knowing that whatever Coach needs me to do, they trust me that I'm going to get the job done no matter what position I'm at." Williams said he spoke with Revis on Friday before practice to inquire about his condition. "He said he'll be all right," Williams said. "He won't go this week, but he'll be all right." When the Jets defeated Miami, 27-14, on Oct. 4 in London, they blitzed quarterback Ryan Tannehill more than 20 times, and Williams suggested they might take a similar approach this time. "If you let Tannehill stay in the backfield without a lot of pressure, we feel he's going to make plays," Williams said. "We feel it's best for us to get after him and make him feel like he's under pressure and, hopefully, get some missed balls." Notes & quotes: Jets safety Dion Bailey (ankle) did not practice and is listed as doubtful, but everyone else practiced fully and is probable, including wide receiver Brandon Marshall (toe) and center Nick Mangold (hand)... Starting Dolphins tackle Ja'Wuan James (toe) is out and all three starting linebackers and wide receiver Jarvis Landry (knee) are listed as questionable. Landry did not practice on Friday. 6 P a g e

After Super Bowl III win, Jets had to beat Giants, says Emerson Boozer (Greg Logan) Newsday FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- From a historical perspective, the biggest victory in New York Jets history was in Super Bowl III over the Baltimore Colts when they became the first AFL team to beat an NFL team. But emotionally, the Jets' first matchup with the Giants during the following preseason might have been even bigger. At least, that's the way former Jets running back Emerson Boozer remembers those heady days in Boozer spoke Friday at the Jets' practice facility as a prelude to his induction into the club's Ring of Honor on Sunday along with his backfield mate, Matt Snell. Even after winning Super Bowl III as an 18-point underdog, the Jets still were regarded by many as secondclass citizens in New York compared with the Giants. "To defeat the Giants meant a lot to us because the Giants were - and still are, believe it or not - the club around New York," Boozer said. "That year, we went into training camp after the Super Bowl with one thing in mind - to defeat the Giants in preseason. Whatever you do, you don't win the Super Bowl and lose to the Giants." The game was played Aug. 17, 1969, at the Yale Bowl, and the Jets scored a resounding victory. At the end of an 0-5 preseason, Giants coach Allie Sherman was fired. The lopsided score, Boozer said, was exactly what the Jets intended. "We never went into training camp before with that intensity," he said. "The whole thing was to get ready for the Giants. [Jets coach] Weeb [Ewbank] had never done that. He'd bring you along slowly. But he was on a mission. One thing he wanted was to not lose to the Giants. "We had to prove to the Giants' fans that their club was not ready for us, and they weren't. We jumped on them like butter on a hot biscuit. We were all over them in a hurry. It was the first time the crosstown rivals were to meet on the football field, and it was happening throughout the league, doing interleague play." If the Jets were tense before that Giants game, they went into Super Bowl III shockingly confident about beating the Colts. Quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed they would win when speaking at a dinner, but Emerson said his teammates weren't concerned about backing up the boast because they shared the same opinion. "There was no focus at all on Namath's comment," Boozer said. "He was so confident that he would go out and say that, but we all were confident that we would beat that club. After we saw our game plan and saw the opposition perform, you tend to build your confidence from those film sessions. We thought we could beat them." Namath was named MVP of the game, but the real star of the Jets' 16-7 win was running back Snell, who scored their only touchdown with help from Boozer's blocking. After his playing days were over, Snell fell out with the club and distanced himself from the organization. Asked if he had done anything to help reconnect Snell to the Jets family, Boozer said. "No I have not. I don't know why he's on the outside. I never asked him why... I spoke to him maybe three years ago by phone, but not since." 7 P a g e

Boozer believes it's appropriate that the two backfield partners are inducted together. "It means that I've finally arrived at the point where we share in the Ring of Honor with my running mate Matt Snell," Boozer said. "Since the inception of the Ring of Honor, you anticipate being a part of it. This weekend, my time comes along with Matt Snell." THE RECORD Jets: Emerson Boozer set for Ring of Honor (JJ Conrad) The Record November 28, FLORHAM PARK Emerson Boozer proudly stood on the podium, a Jet green jacket draped over a plaid button-down collared shirt. He was dressed sharply for his news conference Friday before being inducted into the Jets Ring of Honor on Sunday. But the one glossy accessory that warranted the most attention clung to his left ring finger. Boozer s gold diamond-filled 1969 Super Bowl III ring represents the only season one in which the thirdyear running back was named to the Pro Bowl in franchise history that ended with a championship. "Ours was such a long time ago, you tend to forget," Boozer said. "You hope the club reaches that status again. I wish them a return to the Super Bowl." Boozer, 72, remembers teammate Joe Namath s famous guarantee of victory over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts. He remembers the film sessions leading up to the big game that made him and his teammates equally as confident, only it was Broadway Joe who made that belief so public. But most of all, Boozer just remembers being overly exhausted following the historic 16-7 win. "You ever run five miles?" Boozer, who is being inducted to the Ring of Honor with Super Bowl-winning teammate Matt Snell, rhetorically asked with a laugh. "That s what it felt like. You re tired. You re exhausted. And the only thing that keeps you from collapsing is the fact that you won the ball game. You re spent after you left it all on the field." Boozer is New York s third-leading rusher in franchise history with 5,135 yards, behind fellow Ring of Honor members Curtis Martin and Freeman McNeil. He scored 65 touchdowns in his 10-year career, all with the Jets. "[The induction] means that I ve finally arrived," Boozer said. "It s something that since the inception of the Ring of Honor, you anticipate being a part of. This weekend, my time comes." Concussion will keep Jets' Darrelle Revis out of Sunday's game (JJ Conrad) The Record FLORHAM PARK The Jets high-priced secondary is quickly becoming a primary concern. And the latest injury to All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis won t help matters much. 8 P a g e

Coach Todd Bowles announced Revis will be out Sunday for the Jets divisional showdown against Miami after suffering a concussion in the team s loss to Houston last week. He s getting a little better each day, but not good enough for physical activity, Bowles said Friday, adding that Revis came to the facility in the morning for treatment before being sent home afterward. There s always concern when someone has a concussion. You don t know how bad it affects someone. We just have to take our time and get it right with him. Revis injury opens the door for second-year pro Marcus Williams, who is expected to start opposite a struggling Antonio Cromartie. We ll have the same game plan, Williams said. Todd [Bowles] said how it s about the next man up. The only change in the game plan is that Darrelle s not in there. Williams, undrafted out of North Dakota State, has seen time at corner, nickel and safety this season, and has impressed the coaching staff with his flashes of playmaking ability. Williams said Bowles has referred to him as the utility man, capable of filling a variety of different roles. I like his poise, Bowles said of Williams, 24, who has four interceptions and eight passes defended this season. He s very patient out there. The moment is not too big for him and the ball finds him. He s very instinctive and smart. He s been very consistent since I ve been here. The Jets success and recent lack thereof with New York 1-4 in its last five games following a 4-1 start is almost directly correlated to the number of turnovers it creates. In their five wins, the Jets forced 18 takeaways. In their five losses, that number shrunk to two. A lot of that stems from the performance of the secondary, one which general manger Mike Maccagnan dished out $127 million for. The Jets added Revis, Cromartie and Buster Skrine this off-season to replenish a depleted unit. But in the past five weeks, the Jets have been beaten by Buffalo s Tyrod Taylor (158 yards, TD), Oakland s Derek Carr (333 yards, four TDs) and Houston s T.J. Yates (229 yards, two TDs); not including Cecil Shorts 21-yard TD pass hardly the Murderer s Row of NFL quarterbacks. Marcus [Williams] was beat last week [in Houston], just like the rest of them, Bowles said. They re all playing about the same right now. Now they ll face Miami s Ryan Tannehill for the second time this season after limiting the Texas A&M product to 19 of 44 passing in the first meeting Oct. 4, including two interceptions one from Williams in a win. The next guy has got to step up, safety Calvin Pryor said of the defense playing without Revis. He s definitely a key contributor, but the next man has to step up. That next man is Williams, a man who Bowles admitted he didn t know much about before getting here. He s got the coach s attention now, though, and is ready to make the most of his latest opportunity and help the Jets (5-5) get back on track as they make their potential playoff push. [It s about] working hard, man, Williams said. I think they ve noticed that I take my job seriously. I study film. I m always asking questions and then I m on the field trying to make as many plays as I can. That s how you sustain especially being a guy coaches don t know a lot about, being undrafted, that s how you ve got to make a name for yourself. 9 P a g e

Now, albeit temporarily, he s taking over for one of the all-time greats at the position. Does he feel pressure filling a void left by a player of Revis ilk? No, I m going to approach it how I do every week, Williams said. I m going to go out there and do what the coaches ask me to do to the best of my ability. And hopefully, for Williams, more turnovers will come. ESPN NEW YORK Concussion to sideline Jets CB Darrelle Revis against Dolphins (Ohm Youngmisuk) ESPN New York FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets ruled their best cornerback, Darrelle Revis, out Sunday against Miami due to a concussion. Revis did not practice this week and has been sent home after treatment in the mornings. Revis suffered the head injury during the Jets' loss at Houston. "[Revis feels a] little better each day, but not good enough for physical activity," head coach Todd Bowles said. "The [concussion] protocol is the protocol, but we got to clear him and he's got to feel better. There is always concern when somebody gets a concussion. You just don't know how bad it affects them." The Jets (5-5) are expecting to have starting center Nick Mangold, who went through a full practice and is listed as probable with a laceration in his right snapping hand. Defensive end Sheldon Richardson, who missed last Sunday's game with a hamstring injury, also participated in a full practice and is ready to return on Sunday. The Jets, who will also be without safety Dion Bailey (ankle) according to Bowles, will likely start cornerback Marcus Williams in place of Revis. "Anytime you lose a guy like that, you lose a one-on-one matchup guy," Bowles said of Revis. "... I like [Williams'] poise. He is very patient out there. The moment is not too big for him, the ball finds him, very instinctive, very smart. [But Williams] and the rest of the defense can probably work on tackling and wrapping up [more]." "We definitely feel like... every game from here on out is a must-win for us," Williams said. "We need this win very bad. We know we are still in it for the playoff hunt. It is going to start this Sunday. I feel every game from here on out is a must-win." Emerson Boozer's last run: Scores place in Jets' Ring of Honor (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York When Emerson Boozer arrived in 1966, the New York Jets already had Joe Namath, Don Maynard and Matt Snell -- a strong and young nucleus. What they lacked was a dynamic presence in the backfield. 10 P a g e

"I was probably the last piece," Boozer said last week in a phone interview. "They needed a breakaway back and I provided that." Yes, he did. It finally came together in 1968 and they became the Jets' one and only forever team -- Super Bowl III champions. On Sunday, Boozer will be inducted into the Jets' Ring of Honor, joining former '68 teammates Namath, Maynard, Winston Hill, Larry Grantham, Gerry Philbin and the late coach Weeb Ewbank in the franchise's elite fraternity. Fittingly, Snell, Boozer's old backfield mate, will be inducted, too, but he's not expected to attend the halftime ceremony. Snell, embittered with the franchise for at least 30 years, told ESPN.com last week he won't show up. That won't spoil Boozer's day. In many ways, he's the anti-snell. He's devoted to his old team, frequently participating in alumni events in the New York area. Boozer, 72, settled on Long Island after his playing days and he lives in Huntington Station. He retired 11 years ago after serving as his town's director of parks and recreation for 20 years. His name might not be instantly recognizable to the younger generation of Jets fans, but the older crowd knows all about him. You hear the name "Boozer" and it's impossible not to think of the late 1960s and early 1970s teams. "His hit-and-spin was unbelievable," said John Schmitt, who played center on the Super Bowl team. "He'd run full speed to the hole and, if there was no room, he'd spin out and keep his feet going. His spinning was amazing. He was great." Boozer said he learned that move in high school, back in his native Georgia. His old high school coach taught him how to roll off a block and find the open area. It served him well. "I helped me my entire football life," he said. "It was one of my patented moves, especially when there was no place to go." Boozer is the third-leading rusher in team history (5,135 yards), behind Hall of Famer Curtis Martin and Freeman McNeil, both members of the Ring of Honor. Boozer had a nose for the end zone. Among nonkickers, he's the third leading scorer in team history (65 touchdowns), trailing only Hall of Famer Maynard and Wesley Walker, another Ring member. Boozer, Snell and Bill Mathis formed a potent backfield in the Super Bowl season. In particular, Boozer and Snell became synonymous with the Jets' rushing attack. Snell was power, Boozer was speed. "We were a headache for a lot of defensive coordinators," Boozer said. "They knew we could pound the ball. Those defensive linemen and linebackers, they had to buckle their chin straps. They knew we were coming full force. That's the way I played, that's the way Matt played." They were a great tandem, Boozer and Snell. They should be side by side to hear the cheers one last time, but it will be a single-back formation on Sunday. The missing piece won't be missing. NEW YORK POST The undrafted CB who softens Jets Darrelle Revis blow (Bart Hubbuch) New York Post 11 P a g e

The news got exponentially worse Friday for the Jets beleaguered secondary. Darrelle Revis officially was ruled out for Sunday s home matchup with the Dolphins, leaving Gang Green without the services of by far their best cover cornerback in an AFC East game critical to their playoff hopes. Revis was not at practice again Friday and apparently is still being monitored as part of the NFL s concussion protocol after going down late in a road loss to the Texans last week that dropped the Jets to 5-5. Coach Todd Bowles said after Friday s workout that former undrafted free agent Marcus Williams probably would replace Revis on the outside opposite Antonio Cromartie against Miami while veteran Buster Skrine stays inside to cover the opposing slot receiver. Williams has played well in a variety of backup roles this season, which is why neither Bowles nor many of the Jets seemed to be in panic mode despite not having the perennial All-Pro Revis available Sunday. Bowles admitted he knew nothing about Williams before taking over for Rex Ryan last winter, but has been nothing but impressed by the second-year pro from North Dakota State. He s been consistent since the day I met him, Bowles said. The high point for Williams this season came in a home victory over the Jaguars in Week 9, when he had two interceptions, a half-sack and two tackles. Williams also got snaps at safety when the Jets were shorthanded at that position earlier in the year. I like his poise, Bowles said of Williams. He s very patient out there. The moment is not too big for him. The ball finds him. He s a very instinctive, very smart player. Jets safety Calvin Pryor is also high on Williams. I see a guy who s very focused and willing to make plays and do whatever he can to help this team out, Pryor said. He s definitely been a great player so far with making plays on the ball and doing the right things that we ask him to do. Hopefully, he ll have that same attitude come Sunday. The Jets don t know how long Revis will be sidelined, but they might get a break this weekend. Jarvis Landry, the Dolphins most dangerous receiver and the player Revis likely would have covered, missed two of the three days of practice this week because of a knee injury and was listed as questionable on the official injury report Friday. On the other hand, the Jets haven t been able to stop many receivers name or no-name ones for much of this season. Their expensively remade secondary hasn t lived up to its price tag so far as the Jets 18 TD passes allowed in 10 games ranks just 21st in the NFL. Revis had been one of the few bright spots until the past two games, when he was beaten for a gamedeciding first down by the Bills Sammy Watkins and then torched by Houston s DeAndre Hopkins last week before exiting with the concussion. That pair of tough weeks has dropped Revis from the top of the league s cornerback rankings to a dismal (for him) 17th on the current Pro Football Focus list. He finished third on that list last season with the 12 P a g e

Patriots, and Revis already has allowed as many TD receptions (two) as he did all of 2014, according to PFF. But Bowles had no doubt Revis presence will be missed Sunday. Any time you lose a guy like that, you lose a one-on-one master matchup guy, Bowles said. But we have other guys who can play and have played and will have to step in. Williams didn t sound intimidated over trying to fill Revis enormous shoes. I don t feel any pressure, Williams said. It s just going out there and playing football. It s what I m here to do. You don t want any of your teammates to get hurt, especially a leader, but I m going to go out there, do what my coaches tell me and do it to the best of my abilities. The dramatic, forgotten effect on Jets of ailing Nick Mangold (Mark Cannizzaro) New York Post Because of the position he plays and its anonymous nature, it is difficult to properly quantify Nick Mangold s importance to the Jets. We take Mangold for granted, because most centers in the NFL are taken for granted. And because Mangold has been such a mainstay in the Jets lineup the assumption always is he ll be playing on game day. That s what starting 152 of the 154 games in which he has been eligible to play since he was drafted in the first round in 2006 will do. Mangold does not score touchdowns. He does not sack quarterbacks, force fumbles or kick field goals. Yet he is the most indispensable player on the Jets. That has come more into focus of late with Mangold missing a game for only the second time in his NFL career in Week 8, against the Raiders after he suffered what appeared to be a scary neck injury against the Redskins. Fortunately, he missed only the Oakland game, a miserable blowout loss in which the Jets, who were the top rushing offense in the league entering the week, rushed for just 74 yard on 21 carries. Mangold, too, was knocked out of last week s loss to the Texans in Houston, where he suffered lacerations on his right hand in the second quarter, requiring seven stitches. The Jets are optimistic about his availability for Sunday s game against the Dolphins at MetLife Stadium, but there are no guarantees. Much of that depends on his pain threshold. Just as long as I can hold onto the ball, Mangold said. Count on him playing, which is the best news the Jets will have heard this week, because they need him, perhaps more than they need quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to be healthy. He s like the quarterback; he knows everything about the offense, left guard James Carpenter said. He gets us all in the right place in the blocking schemes. Plus, he s really tough. Ten years in the league and he s still flying around like this is his fifth. 13 P a g e

Coach Todd Bowles called Mangold very bright, very tough, a mainstay, adding, Guys rely on him for everything, whether it s the calls, whether it s blocking schemes, whether it s enthusiasm. He s the same guy every day. So, when that guy is not playing, from an enthusiasm standpoint, you try not to take a dip too far. Of course you cannot pin the Jets recent woes only on the center position and Mangold being hurt there are a number of factors that have contributed to the slide that has put the Jets playoff chances in peril. But facts are facts: The Jets were 4-1 coming out of that win over the Redskins when Mangold got hurt, and they are 1-4 since. The most important qualities for a center and the three that I think he excels at are intelligence, experience and he s always even-keel, always the same guy, Fitzpatrick said. There s no panic. He s actually a calming presence in the huddle and on the field. Fitzpatrick said when he first joined the Jets via a trade from Houston, he knew immediately there would be a special synergy between him and Mangold. There was almost an instant telepathy. We got on the same page pretty quickly, Fitzpatrick said. We kind of see the game the same way. There s constant communication between us. He s kind of my translator. I can come to him with new terminology I want to use at the line of scrimmage and he ll know right away whether it ll work, because he knows how those guys think up front. He ll tell me, No, that s not going to work, or, Yes, that will work, or, That s not going to make sense to them because they ll be thinking about a different play if you say that word. And, in a game, whether I m in the middle of my cadence or whether the clock is winding down on third down, for him to be able to think as quickly as he does, to diagnose from the center position as quickly as he does, and to communicate that calmly to everybody that s why he s so dynamic. And so difficult to replace. Well, I know I m not going to replace him, said Wesley Johnson, Mangold s backup. He s a great player. What I m going to do is listen to him and play the best game I can. He s one of the rocks on the team. Coming in here, everyone knows who Nick is, and if they don t they learn real quick. With the recent cracks in Mangold s armor, the Jets have learned something they may not have already known: They have a difficult time functioning without him. Super Bowl hero s Jets grudge a mystery to iconic teammate (Bart Hubbuch) New York Post Jets legend Matt Snell s disdain for his former team is a mystery to his old backfield teammate, too. Snell won t be at MetLife Stadium on Sunday for his induction into the Jets Ring of Honor along with fellow running back Emerson Boozer, and Boozer sounded as lost for a reason for Snell s boycott as everyone else Friday. I don t know why he s on the outside, nor have I tried to bring him back inside, Boozer said at a news conference at the Jets Florham Park facility in connection with Sunday s halftime ceremony. Boozer added the last time he spoke with Snell was maybe three years ago, and the topic of Snell s beef with the Jets as usual never came up. 14 P a g e

I ve never asked him why, said Boozer, who retired in 1975 and played alongside Snell with the Jets for seven seasons. Boozer was much more interested in talking about his own induction, which will be in recognition for a 10-year career all with the Jets that included 5,135 rushing yards (third most in team history), 139 receptions for 1,488 yards and 64 touchdowns. It means that I ve finally arrived, to the point where we share in the Ring of Honor with my running mate, Matt Snell, Boozer said. This weekend, my time comes. Like most of the Jets from their era, Boozer and Snell are best known for their role in the 16-7 upset of the heavily favored Colts in Super Bowl III. Snell ran for 121 yards on 30 carries that day, scoring the Jets only TD and the first points of the game on a 4-yard carry in the second quarter. You ever run 5 miles? That s what it felt like, Boozer said of the Jets lone Super Bowl appearance. You re tired, you re exhausted, you re totally spent. The only thing that keeps you from collapsing it that you won the ballgame. Darrelle Revis (concussion) already has been ruled out for Sunday s game against the Dolphins, but that might not be the only absence in the Jets secondary. Backup safety Dion Bailey (ankle) did not practice Friday and was listed as doubtful on the official injury report. The Dolphins are 3-3 under interim coach Dan Campbell since firing Joe Philbin in the wake of a listless, loss to the Jets in London in Week 4 that sealed Philbin s fate. Jets safety Calvin Pryor said the difference in Miami s effort level since Philbin s departure is glaringly obvious on film. They re playing harder, Pryor said with a grin Friday. I really notice that. They re playing a lot harder. Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson is expected to play Sunday after missing a game due to injury for the first time in his career last week. Richardson, who had been sidelined by a hamstring issue, practiced Friday and was declared full-go by coach Todd Bowles. How NFL shafts and humbles NY fans with Giants, Jets gametime (Mike Vaccaro) New York Post We hear an awful lot about how important New York City is. Much of the time, that opinion comes from ourselves, because we absolutely believe that New York City is important, especially when it comes to professional sports. But it isn t only us. Ask the flyover states. Ask the folks on the other coast. New York is the big, bad wolf. If only Player X played in New York, they lament, he d be an All-Star. If poor Player Y had played in New York his whole career, they moan, he d be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer. Such belief goes a long way toward feeding our egos. But lately, you have to wonder Sunday, for instance. 15 P a g e

The Giants are 5-5, which screams MEDIOCRITY! from the highest floors of the Empire State Building. They have behaved in fourth quarters this year as recklessly as Johnny Manziel after hours. There are times when they look incapable of stopping a paper cut, let alone a professional offense and yet they are in about as good a position as you could possibly be with six weeks left in the season. The rest of the NFC East is as soft as a Ramada mattress and looks to be getting worse. They play the Redskins on Sunday, and if they win it becomes all but impossible to craft a scenario where they can t win the NFC East and if any team has proven the if-you re-in-it-you-can-win-it mantra of the NFL playoffs, it s the Giants. The Jets are 5-5. If you d like, you could scale the top of Freedom Tower to find even higher ground from which to shout MEDIOCRITY! They were 4-1 in their first five games, and have been 1-4 in their last five, and that is a disagreeable trend line no matter which way you spin it. There are times when you d swear running the Fumblerooski every play would double their rushing output and yet they are tied with the Bills, the Texans and the Chiefs for the final wild-card slot in the AFC, and they sit a game behind the Steelers for the top wild card. If they could ever re-summon the magic of those first five games across the last six, they could still make a legitimate playoff run. And even if Rex Ryan is gone, there are still plenty of players who remain who won four road playoff games not so long ago. In other words: both teams are very much alive. Both teams play games on Sunday that could be critical to their postseason fates (although the Giants, in this crazy season, probably could find a way to lose this and many others and finish 6-10 and STILL win their division going away) And both teams play at 1 p.m. Time was, the NFL would sooner admit it has a concussion problem than schedule the two New York teams against each other. It happened in It didn t happen again until 2009, and then it was the Jets requesting that kickoff be moved out of respect to fans who wanted to celebrate Yom Kippur that night. It s happened more frequently in recent years, always because the two New York seasons have been irretrievably lost. The last three years, with neither team in play for a playoff berth, they both played 1 p.m. games in Week 17, and since by that point everyone was just eager to have the season end, there was little backlash. It also happened in Week 14 last year, by which point the Jets record was 2-10 and the Giants 3-9. Did anyone even notice? Now, this might not be a cataclysmic issue for you: If you re a Giants fan, you ll watch Giants-Redskins. If you re a Jets fan, you ll be all over Jets-Dolphins. Maybe you ll click over during commercials. Those whose loyalties are split or who are agnostic regarding the locals can wear out the toggle button. Or rely on picture-in-picture. Or just turn the Red Zone Channel on. Still The Giants can all but clinch the East. The Jets can reestablish themselves as legit playoff contenders. There are two football games of huge import affecting New York City this Sunday, and the NFL is forcing you to choose (with the grand prize being the Steelers-Seahawks game now being available in the 4 p.m. window a 6-4 team against a 5-5 team!) Doesn t the NFL remember how important we are? NJ ADVANCE MEDIA What's wrong with the Jets' pass rush? (Dom Cosentino) 16 P a g e

NJ Advance Media ndex FLORHAM PARK When the Jets got off to their 4-1 start, their defense was the biggest reason, in large part because it was able to generate pressure, which, in turn, led to turnovers. And turnovers have had a direct correlation to the Jets' success: In their five victories, the defense has forced 17 takeaways (an additional turnover came when wideout Brandon Marshall forced a fumble after fumbling himself). But in the Jets' five losses, they've managed just two takeaways. The key to the Jets' success, then, is screamingly obvious. So what gives? What's happened to the Jets' ability to harass quarterbacks into making mistakes? Chalk it up to a combination of injuries, opponents' adjustments, the defense's failures on first and second downs, and not having a fast, dominant edge rusher. The lack of a sustained pass rush has become more acute in the past month, when the Jets have lost four of five games to fall to.500 heading into Sunday's home date against the Dolphins. "We have to work a little better to get that pressure on the quarterback and create those turnovers and get sacks," defensive end Leger Douzable said. Per Pro Football Focus, in the Jets' five wins, they pressured the quarterback on 46.9 percent of all dropbacks. But in their five losses, that number falls to just 31.8 percent. And it's not simply a case of blitzing versus not blitzing: The Jets blitzed on 47.8 of all dropbacks in their wins, versus 49.5 percent in their losses. The issue, then, is being effective with those blitzes. One of the biggest problems in the Jets' recent losses to the Raiders, Bills, and Texans has been their inability to get stops on early downs. That's created situations is which it's easy for quarterbacks to adjust by throw shorter, quicker passes to neutralize the rush. "We find ourselves in situations where it's third-and-4 or third-and-5, and they're getting rid of the ball faster, and we're not able to get to the [quarterback]," said outside linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin. The numbers bear this out: Texans last week had manageable third downs (defined here as third-and-4 or closer) eight out of 12 times in the first three quarters. The week before, the Bills had manageable third downs eight times in 16 tries. And four of the Raiders' five first-half third downs the Jets trailed, 21-6, at the half and never recovered were manageable. "We've just got to get teams back into the third-and-longs, third-and-9, third-and-10s, 3-and-12s, where our front seven can peel back and go after the quarterback," said cornerback Antonio Cromartie. "I think that's the biggest thing." The Jets drafted Quinton Coples in the 2012 first round hoping he'd become a dominant pass rusher. It didn't work, and Coples was waived this week, only to get picked up by the Dolphins. Head coach Todd Bowles specifically identified edge rusher as a glaring weakness for his defense. "I don't think we're getting off on the edge very fast," Bowles said. "We don't have a fast edge-rushing team. We have a bunch of power guys inside and some guys that can make some plays on the inside. I don't think we have the true speed guys on the outside yet. So we blitz more here and there to cover up for some of those things." 17 P a g e
