2 2009 NCAA Regionals - First and Second Rounds Hoke Sloan Tennis Center - Clemson, SC Clemson To Begin NCAA Tournament Play The 12th-ranked Clemson women s tennis team will kick off NCAA Tournament play on Friday afternoon as the Tigers will take on Winthrop in first-round action. Clemson was awarded an NCAA regional for the sixth straight year and will play host to the North Carolina-Georgia State match-up at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center as well. The Tigers and Eagles will play at 2:00 pm while the Tar Heels and Panthers will face off at 11:00 am. The winners from Friday s contests will match-up in the second round at 1:00 pm on Saturday. The winner of the Clemson regional will advance to the NCAA Championships which are scheduled to begin on May 15 in College Station, TX on the campus of Texas A&M University. Clemson boasts a 17-7 record for the 2009 season and is making its eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers will also be playing in their 10th overall national tournament under Head Coach Nancy Harris. In 2008, Clemson defeated Winthrop by a 4-0 margin in the opening round before posting a 4-1 win over Michigan in the second round. The Tigers then fell to Stanford in the round of 16. Scouting the Field The Winthrop Eagles will be making their second straight trip to Clemson for NCAA Tournament play. The Eagles successfully defended their Big South Championship for the automatic bid and will bring a 14-8 record into Tigertown. The first-round match will be just the fourth meeting in history between the two schools, who hadn t met since 1979 before last year s contest. The Tigers have won all four prior match-ups. North Carolina boasts the #20 Campbell/ITA Tennis ranking and an overall record for the year. A second-round meeting between the Tar Heels and Tigers would be the third this season. Clemson won the regular season match-up by a 5-2 margin in Chapel Hill, NC while North Carolina avenged the loss with a 4-2 upset in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament on Apr. 17. The Tar Heels number-one player Sanaz Marand is ranked 21st in the latest ITA Tennis singles poll and is ranked fourth nationally in doubles with Sophie Grabinski. Georgia State earned an automatic bid after winning the CAA Championship. The Panthers enter NCAA play with a 10-4 record and the #46 national ranking. A meeting between Clemson and Georgia State would be just the sixth in history and the first since the 2002 season. The Tigers defeated the Pantheres in all five previous match-ups. Clemson s NCAA Regional History Under the current regional format, which began in the 1999 season, the Tigers have compiled an 11-4 regional record and advanced to the round of 16 in 2004, 2005, 2007 and The Clemson women s tennis program has now played host to six straight NCAA regionals. The Tigers own a 9-1 record in regional matches held on their home court and have advanced to the round of 16 out of their own regional four times. Last season, Clemson defeated Winthrop, 4-0, in its opening match and then won, 4-1, over Michigan in the second round. Three Clemson Women s Tennis Players Selected For NCAA Individual Championships A trio of Clemson women s tennis players earned bids to the NCAA Individual Championships. Ani Mijacika is the fourth-seeded player while Josipa Bek received a 9-16 seeding to give the Tigers two players in the national singles tournament for the second straight year. Mijacika will team with rookie Keri Wong in doubles action to extend Clemson s streak of sending a doubles team to the NCAA event to seven straight. The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will be held from May at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. Mijacika, a junior from Makarska, Croatia, will be making her third appearance in the NCAA Tournament. After falling in the first round as a freshman in 2007, she advanced to the round of 16 last year. This also marks the second consecutive season that Mijacika has earned a top-eight seed for the tournament as she was the number-two seeded player in She owns a 28-8 overall record with a 16-5 ledger in dual matches. The NCAA seeds players onethrough-eight individually, but the next eight players in the 64-player field are listed as a group. Bek already has a tournament crown in her collection as the native of Osijek, Croatia won the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional in October. With her 30 wins this season, compared to eight losses, she became just the fourth different player in Clemson history over the last 13 years to reach the mark. Bek has been ranked among the top 15 singles players all season long as the Tigers have been the only team in the nation to boast two players ranked that highly. Mijacika and Wong were listed ninth in the most recent doubles poll to just miss a national seed in the doubles tournament, but the Clemson tandem has posted a 12-4 record in the spring season. They have eight wins over ranked opponents and upset a pair of top-10 teams in February. Their selection also marks the

3 third straight NCAA appearance for Mijacika in doubles. She partnered with Federica van Adrichem in 2007 for an historic run as the duo became the first Clemson team to reach the semifinals of the tournament. Mijacika and former Tiger Carol Salge advanced to the quarterfinals last season before falling in a three-set battle. The Tigers have a chance to send two teams to the NCAA Doubles Championships, which selects 32 teams, for just the second time in history and the first since Bek and Ina Hadziselimovic are the top alternate with the #34 ranking. They have compiled a 13-6 record playing primarily at the second position. Mijacika Earns Top Conference Honor; Bek Named All-ACC Clemson s Ani Mijacika was named the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Women s Tennis Player-of-the-Year, as voted on by the league s 12 head coaches and announced by the conference office on Apr. 15. The Tiger junior was joined on the all-conference team by rookie Josipa Bek as the two give Clemson a powerful combination at the top of the line-up. Mijacika stands at 28-8 overall in singles play and is currently ranked number four in the Campbell/ITA Tennis singles poll. The native of Makarska, Croatia has also spent six weeks as the nation s top-ranked player this season. She partnered with Keri Wong to post a 7-2 doubles record in conference play and the duo has moved up to ninth in the doubles rankings with a 14-5 overall record. Mijacika is the ninth player in Clemson women s tennis history to earn to the league s top honor and is the Tigers first three-time All-ACC selection since Julie Coin from Coin, who is currently playing on the WTA Tour, was also the Tigers most recent player-of-the-year, winning the award in This is the second major ACC honor for Mijacika, who was named Freshman-of-the- Year in She has earned player-of-the-week honors three times this season and is a seven-time recipient over her career. Bek has had an impressive freshman campaign that began with her ITA Southeast Regional Championship title in October and has continued throughout the spring season. She boasts a 30-8 overall record to become just the fourth different player since 1996 to reach the 30-win mark. Bek, who hails from Osijek, Croatia, compiled a 10-1 record against ACC opponents in singles play with an 8-2 doubles record in conference matches. Tigers In The Rankings The Clemson women s tennis was ranked #12 in the final Campbell/ITA Tennis poll of the regular season. The Tigers have been ranked as one of the top 15 teams nationally in every poll this season. Clemson currently boasts a 17-7 overall record. Tiger junior Ani Mijacika highlighted the list of four players listed in the singles poll with the number-four ranking, while a pair of Clemson doubles teams was listed in the top 35. Mijacika has compiled a 28-8 overall record with a 16-4 mark in dual matches. The Tigers defeated nine of them - Fresno State, Georgia Tech, Florida State, the College of Charleston, North Carolina, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth. Six of those teams are currently ranked in the top 10 nationally with five of Clemson s seven losses suffered against those programs. However, the Tigers lost three of those five matches by a narrow 4-3 margin. The rookie has posted a 30-8 record through her first collegiate season with a 19-4 mark in dual matches playing primarily at flight two. Estefania Balda and Keri Wong were also ranked at #112, and #118, respectively, in the latest poll. In the doubles listings, the Tiger tandem of Mijacika and Wong earned the #9 ranking for its seventh straight top-10 listing. With an 14-5 overall record, the duo has recorded eight wins over ranked opponents this year with a 12-4 ledger during the spring season. Clemson s number-two team of Bek and Hadziselimovic, winners of eight of their last 10 matches, was ranked 34th. The duo has compiled a 13-6 for the year. Make Mine A Double The Tiger women s tennis team is dominating in doubles play once again. Clemson has taken the 1-0 lead into singles play in all but five matches in 2009 (excluding the Florida State match where doubles were not played). Boise State won two of the three contests in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, but the Tigers rebounded in singles play for the 4-1 win over the Broncos. Clemson also fell in doubles to Kentucky on Mar. 1, Virginia Tech on Mar. 21, Duke on Apr. 10 and North Carolina on Apr. 17. The Tigers have swept all three doubles matches in 11 matches this season. Estefania Balda and Alexandra Luc lead the way with an 15-4 team record in dual play, while Ani Mijacika and Keri Wong boast the #9 ranking in the latest Campbell/ITA Tennis doubles poll. Mijacika Tops In The Nation Junior Ani Mijacika spent six straight weeks as the #1-ranked player in the country. She rose to the top spot in the Mar. 3 poll and remained there in the following two polls. The native of Makarska, Croatia boasts a 16-4 record during the spring season, missing a trio of matches due to an injury. Her first loss was suffered when she retired from the injury on the final day of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 16. The second was in her first match back. Mijacika has posted 17 wins over ranked opponents and six of her 28 wins have come against players currently ranked among the top 10. She has defeated players ranked second, third, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth. The native of Makarska, Croatia has dropped just 10 sets during the spring season and owns a 28-7 overall record. Streak Reaches Eight The Clemson women s tennis team won eight straight matches from Mar. 15-Apr. 5. Clemson s streak begam with a 5-1 (no doubles) win over Florida State in Tallahassee on Mar. 15. Clemson also posted wins against Central Florida, Virginia Tech, Virginia, NC State, Wake Forest. Maryland and Boston College. Mijacika Collects Third ACC Weekly Honor Of Season Clemson junior Ani Mijacika and Georgia Tech freshman Irina Falconi were been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women s Tennis Co-Players of the Week for the week ending Mar. 30. The seventh-ranked Falconi was named Player of the Week for the second time, having also been selected Feb. 24. Mijacika improved to 26-5 overall in singles and now owns a 19-6 individual doubles record. Mijacika downed 99th-ranked Lenka Hojckova of NC State, 6-3, 6-0 and scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over 51st ranked Sasha Kulikova of Wake Forest. She also played a part in wins at No. 1 doubles in both matches. The wins were Mijacika s fifth and sixth straight and her 16th and 17th over ranked opponents. The Makarska, Croatia, native boasts a 14-2 record in dual matches and has helped Clemson to post a 6-1 mark in conference matches with a 16-5 overall record. Clemson s Croatian Combination With the addition to the squad of rookie Josipa Bek, Clemson Head Coach Nancy Harris now boasts quite the Croatian Combination. Bek, a native of Osijek, Croatia, joins countrymate Ani Mijacika to give the Tigers a lethal duo at the top of the singles lineup. Bek currently owns an 30-7 record and made her rankings debut at #10 in the preseason individual poll on Jan. 6. Mijacika, who hails from Makarska, entered the spring season at #4 in the singles rankings and won eight straight matches to open the spring season. She moved into the #1 ranking on Mar. 3 and boasts a 28-7 ledger for the year. The duo gives Head Coach Nancy Harris two players ranked in the top 15 in singles and makes Clemson the only team in the nation who can make that claim. Bek Posts 30th Win Rookie Josipa Bek became just the fourth different player in the last 13 years to win 30 matches in a single year. With a pair of victories over the Apr weekend, the native of Osijek, Croatia extended her winning streak to 10 straight and improved to 30-7 overall. She joins teammate Ani Mijacika, legend Julie Coin and former Tiger Maria Brito as Clemson s only 30-match winners since Coin posted at least 30 wins all three years she was in Tigertown - 31 in ; 32 in ; and 38 in while Brito had a 31-9 record as a rookie in Mijacika boasted a 30-8 record as a sophomore in and is just two wins shy of becoming the second 30-match winner in multiple seasons since the 1980s. Clemson At The National Indoor The Tigers went 1-2 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship over the Feb weekend. Clemson fell in its opening match to #2-ranked Cal, being just edged (4-3) by the Golden Bears. The Tigers rebounded with a 5-2 win over #13 Fresno State in the consolation rounds but fell to ninth-ranked Southern California on the final day of action. The Tigers won at the first and third doubles positions to clinch the point and take a 1-0 lead in the match against Cal. Ani Mijacika and Keri Wong teamed up to upset Cal s seventh-ranked duo of Claire Ilcinkas and Marina Cossou at the top spot, while Estefania Balda and Alexandra Luc defeated Bojana Bobusic and Stephany Chang at the third position. Mijacika then put the Tigers ahead, 2-0, with a three-set victory at flight one. Andersson scored the first point for the Golden Bears with a win over Keri Wong at the third position (6-2, 7-5), and Bobusic defeated Hadziselimovic at flight five in another three-set battle. Balda then fell to the Golden Bears Ilcinkas, who is ranked 30th in the latest ITA singles poll, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at flight four. Juricova then clinched the match for Cal with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bek at the second position. With the match decided, Luc pulled out the win at flight six to post Clemson s third point of the match. She defeated Marion Ravelojaona by a 6-1, 7-6 margin. Ani Mijacika won her eighth straight singles match and, in doing so, clinched the 5-2 victory over #13 Fresno State on Saturday. Mijacika defeated 17thranked Melanie Gloria at the top singles position in straight sets (6-1, 7-5) and has now posted wins over five straight top-20 opponents. Clemson s win avenged a loss to the Bulldogs in last year s ITA Indoors and was the Tigers first over Fresno State in three tries. The Tigers captured the doubles point as Clemson teams posted wins at flights two and three. Bek then put the Tigers ahead, 2-0, with a straight set victory at flight two. Rowe of Fresno State scored her team s first point as she defeated Balda at the fourth position (7-6(2), 6-3).Luc put Clemson within one point of the win as she outlasted Beatty in a three-set battle at flight six. The Bulldogs scored their second point with Kucerkova s victory over Wong at number three (6-2, 7-5), while Hadziselimovic picked up a win at flight five for the 5-2 final score. Clemson women s tennis team captured the doubles point against Southern California on Sunday, but the Tigers couldn t overcome the talent of the Trojans in singles play and fell, 4-3, on the final day of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Ani Mijacika and Keri Wong partnered for the fifth straight match and defeated Southern Cal s team of Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu, 8-5, at the top position. At flight two, Josipa Bek and Ina Hadziselimovic downed the Trojan duo of Maria Sanchez and Alison Ramos, while Estefania Balda and Alexandra Luc clinched the sweep with an 8-7(4) win at flight three. The Clemson tandem defeated Sarah Fansler and Lyndsay Kinstler to improve to 11-4 on the year. Southern Cal picked up its first point of the day when Mijacika, Clemson s top player, was forced to retire early in the first set of singles play. Sanchez was then credited with the win. Josipa Bek and Alexandra Luc picked up individual wins for the Tigers at flights two and six, respectively. Bek won in straight sets over Fansler (6-3, 6-4) for her 17th victory of the season, while Luc s three-set win against Leyla Entekhabi gave her a perfect 3-0 record for the weekend. Balda fell to 16th-ranked Fink at the third position (6-1, 6-0), and Hadziselimovic also dropped a decision at flight five to Ramos, 6-1, 6-4. Niculescu edged Won at number four, winning both sets by a 6-4 margin. ITA Kick-Off Weekend Recap The Clemson women s tennis team earned a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a pair of wins over the ITA Kick-off Weekend. The Tigers defeated Boise State, 4-1, in the opening round on Jan. 31 at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center and then posted a 4-3 win over #26 Auburn to advance to the round of 16. Josipa Bek clinched a 4-1 victory over Boise State as Clemson rebounded from a loss to Boise State in doubles play to capture the first four singles flights. The Tigers lost the doubles point for the first time this season as Boise State picked up wins at the first and third positions to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Mijacika, ranked 4th in the latest ITA Tennis singles poll, evened the match at one apiece with a straight set victory at the top flight. Wong put Clemson on top by a 2-1 margin with a win at the number four position and Balda then posted the Tigers third point of the afternoon with a three-set victory at the third flight. Bek then sealed the Tiger victory, winning a battle at flight two. Clemson s Luc and Hadziselimovic were also leading in their matches at flights five and six, respectively, before play was called. Junior Ina Hadziselimovic then sealed the 4-3 win over Auburn in the second round. The Clemson Tigers came back to grab the victory after relinquishing a 3-0 lead. Clemson started the day by winning the doubles point, picking up wins in the first and third flights. Mijacika won easily over #6 Fani Chifchieva at the

5 first singles spot, 6-1, 6-2. Mijacika never trailed against Chifchieva, avenging two previous losses in the past year. Freshman Keri Wong put Clemson on top by a 3-0 margin, but Auburn posted wins at flights two, three and five before Hadziselimovic defeated her opponent at the sixth position. Mijacika Earns Back-to-Back ACC Weekly Honors Ani Mijacika was named the ACC Player-of-the-Week on Tuesday, Feb. 10 to earn the honor for the second straight week and for the sixth time in her career. She remained undefeated in dual matches by knocking off a pair of top-10 ranked opponents and has now posted three straight wins over top-10 opponents in singles action. Mijacika s 6-4, 6-2 win over ninth-ranked Laura Gioia of Furman in No. 1 singles helped key the Tigers to a 7-0 win. She then outlasted Georgia s seventh-ranked Chelsey Gullickson 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 in Clemson s tough 4-3 loss to the nationally sixth-ranked Bulldogs. Mijacika partnered with Keri Wong to knock off Georgia s 10thranked duo and help the Tigers claim the doubles point. Mijacika won her first award of the season on Feb. 3 after posting wins over ranked opponents during the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Kickoff Weekend. The Tiger junior led Clemson to a pair of wins to advance to the tournament s round of 16. Mijacika won both her singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of Auburn s 6th-ranked Fani Chifchieva on Sunday afternoon. She avenged a pair of losses to Chifchieva (at the 2009 NCAA Singles and at last fall s ITA All-American), dropping just three games against the Auburn player. Her doubles win against Auburn proved crucial as the two teams split their matches in singles play. Bek Wins Southeast Regional Clemson rookie Josipa Bek captured the tournament title at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships. The freshman from Osijek, Croatia won a pair of matches on Monday, Oct. 27 at the University Indoor Tennis Courts on the campus of Wake Forest University for the crown. Former Standout Julie Coin Makes Tennis History Julie Coin, a standout on the Clemson women s tennis team from , eliminated top-seeded Ana Ivanovic at the 2008 US Open on Thursday afternoon. Coin, ranked #188 and playing in her first career Grand Slam, stunned the tennis world with her second-round upset at Arthur Ashe Stadium, making history in the process. Never before in the Open era that began in 1968 had the No. 1 woman lost this early in the tournament. For more information on the tournament visit Ivanovic held serve in the first game of the match, but Coin went on to claim the set by a 6-3 margin. The Serbian player rebounded to win the second, 6-4. Ivanovic appeared to be regaining form in the third set and had three break points that could have given her the 3-2 edge. However, Coin battled back to win the game and took a 4-2 lead in set after breaking Ivanovic s serve. Up 5-3, Coin won on her third match point, acing Ivanovic to seal the victory.
