Memphis has won 46 of its last 52 January games (.885 winning percentage). BEST DEFENSE OF THE 21ST CENTURY In their last two games, the Tigers held their opponents (Robert Morris and Charlotte) to under What A Difference A Year Makes By The Numbers Last year, the Tigers had one of the most inexperienced teams in college basketball, and the numbers entering the season revealed that. Well, a year later, the tune has changed with the numbers showing Memphis returning a lot of experience in Numbers 557: Total number of games played at NCAA Division I level 235: Total number of games started at NCAA Division I level 97.9: Percentage of assists returning from : Percentage of steals returning from : Percentage of minutes played returning from : Percentage of points scored returning from : Percentage of rebounds returning from : Percentage of blocked shots returning from Numbers 254: Total number of games played at NCAA Division I level 91: Total number of games started at NCAA Division I level 65.9: Percentage of blocked shots returning from : Percentage of rebounds returning from : Percentage of points scored returning from : Percentage of steals returning from : Percentage of assists returning from percent shooting from the field. Memphis held Robert Morris to 23.2 percent (16-of-69) and Charlotte 24.6 percent (16-of- 65) from the floor. The Tigers opponents shot a combined 23.9 percent (32-of-134) from the field in the two games. It is the first time this century (since ) that Memphis held opponents to under 25 percent field goal percentage in back-to-back contests. Prior to this, the last time Memphis came close to holding two foes to under 25 percent field goal percentage in a single season was the campaign. That year, the Tigers held Wisconsin-Milwaukee to 22.2 percent from the field (Nov. 15, 2005) and Houston to 25.5 percent (Mar. 10, 2006). IT S A BLOCK PARTY The Tigers posted double-digit blocks in their last two games, swatting 13 shots in each of the two games against Robert Morris and Charlotte. It is the first time Memphis recorded doubledigit blocks in consecutive games since the season. That year, the Tigers had double-digit blocked shots in back-to-back contests versus Tennessee (11 blocks; Dec. 31, 2009) and Houston Baptist (14 blocks; Jan. 3, 2010). FOURTH TIME S A CHARM For the fourth time in the early portion of the season, Will Barton set career highs for points and rebounds. The 6-foot-6 guard s latest career bests came in the Tigers Dec. 17 setback at No. 4/4 Louisville with 28 points and 16 boards. The following tracks his career high changes this season: Opponent Pts Rebs Louisville Murray State 27* Miami, Fla Austin Peay 13 Tennessee Belmont 23 Highs Entering *tied career high HALL HITTING THE GLASS In only his fifth game wearing the Blue and Gray, Ferrakohn Hall posted a career high for rebounds. DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE The Tigers have recorded seven double-doubles this season, all by Will Barton. Tigers Going Retro As a part of the University of Memphis Centennial celebration ( ), the Tigers unveiled their retro uniforms in the Nov. 15 season-opening win over Belmont. The retro uniforms are replicas of the ones worn by the Tigers squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament championship game. Memphis fell to the Bill Walton-led UCLA Bruins in the title game. The trio of Larry Finch, Larry Kenon and Ronnie Robinson led that Memphis team. Gene Bartow coached the squad and was named NABC National Coach of the Year. The Tigers home retros are white with Memphis in blue script outlined in red. The shorts have a belt-look and are trimmed in blue and red. The road retros are navy blue with red Memphis script outlined in white. The Tigers debuted the road retros Dec. 17 at Louisville. Plans were to wear the retros the remainder of the season. In addition to his eight points and six boards, the sophomore blocked a career-best seven shots. The seven blocks were the most by a Tiger since Will Coleman also denied seven shot attempts on Feb. 3, 2010, in an win over UAB at FedExForum. Black s seven blocks tied him with eight other players for the seventh-most swats in a single game in Tigers hoops history. The 6-foot-3 guard played 13 minutes and had two points, three boards and two assists in the win over the Colonials. Carmouche also played 16 minutes versus Charlotte Dec. 31 and make two clutch threepointers in the win. He finished with nine points. The original plan was for him to return to the court Dec. 17 versus Louisville. Carmouche, however, missed the game as a result of a knee injury and did not make the trip to Louisville. He also missed the Dec. 19 Lipscomb and Dec. 22 Georgetown games due to the knee injury. Carmouche missed the Nov. 28-Dec. 11 games due to what head coach Josh Pastner called an internal matter. After returning from Maui Nov. 24, Carmouche was suspended from practice and games. On Nov. 30, Carmouche returned to practice. Prior to the suspension, he started the first four games and averaged 8.3 points and 3.0 rebounds. AND SO DOES STEPHENS Well, the Memphis sports medicine staff should get some kudos for this one. After announcing Dec. 14 that D.J. Stephens may miss the remainder of the season due to knee pain, the 6-foot-5 forward/guard made his return to action Dec. 29 versus Robert Morris. The Killeen, Texas, native saw four minutes of action and scored one point. Stephens also brought good energy to the floor in the win over Charlotte Dec. 31. In eight minutes of action, he had two points, one board and two blocked shots. Prior to missing the Dec games, Stephens had played in four games and averaged 1.3 points and 1.0 rebounds. 21 GAME #1 Game Recaps And Boxscores #10/10 Memphis 97 Belmont 81 Nov. 15, 2011 Memphis, Tenn. EA Sports Maui Invitational Opening Game Memphis kicked off the season in impressive fashion with a win over Belmont in the opening game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Three players scored at least 20 points, including 22 from Wesley Witherspoon, who was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field. Will Barton was the Tigers leading scorer with a career-high 23 points, while Joe Jackson added 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Freshman Adonis Thomas shined in his Tigers debut with 12 points. The Tigers shot nearly 59 percent from the field. A Belmont team that lost to No. 6 Duke by one point in its opener Nov. 11 managed just 39 percent shooting and had 18 turnovers. Despite an 11 a.m. tip, the Tigers showed no signs of sluggishness, as Memphis jumped out to a 16-4 lead. J.J. Mann ended the Bruins drought with a 7-0 scoring spurt of his own just before the 12-minute mark, and another Belmont free throw at 11:36 cut the lead to From there, the Bruins matched Memphis bucketfor-bucket to stay within three at with three minutes remaining. However, it was defensive pressure that allowed the Tigers to score seven of the last 10 points in the half and take a lead into the locker room. The Tigers began the second half much as they did the first, with a 5-of-5 shooting start and a 13-2 run to take a lead with 17 minutes left to play. A jumper from Thomas at the 11:39 mark gave Memphis a commanding lead. That would be the last Memphis field goal for almost four minutes as Belmont went on a 12-1 run once again assisted by the free throw line to cut the deficit to just seven points at The Bruins refused to go Tigers Tails Josh Pastner won his 50th career game with the win and is fastest coach in Memphis history to get to the 50-win milestone. Memphis scored 97 points, the most in a game since putting up 102 points against Tennessee Martin in a 22-point win last season ( ) For the game, Memphis shot 58.6 percent (34-of-58). The Tigers last shot over 50 percent in last season s Conference USA Tournament-semifinal win, 76-56, over East Carolina, when they went 27-of-53 (50.9 percent) from the floor. away, however, as they used three-straight treys to keep it close and still trail by just seven points at with less than four minutes left in the game. But, the Tigers kept their composure and came alive down the stretch with a 12-2 run to push the lead back to double digits at with one minute left. GAME #2 #15/15 Michigan 73 #8/8 Memphis 97 Nov. 21, 2011 Lahaina, Hawaii EA Sports Maui Invitational Championship Round Charles Carmouche s team-high 14 points weren t enough for No. 8/8 Memphis to overcome a strong shooting effort from the No. 15/15 Michigan Wolverines, as the Tigers fell in their first round game of the 2011 Maui Invitational. Michigan shot 54 percent (27-of-50) from the floor while Memphis only connected on 33.3 percent (19-of-57) of its field goal attempts. The Tigers were 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from three, compared to 6-of-20 (30.0 percent) for the Wolverines. The Wolverines started the game on fire, connecting on 7 of their first 8 shots. Meanwhile, the Tigers started a meager 3-of-10 to begin the game. Trailing 18-9 at the time, Memphis responded with a 10-2 run, on 4-of-5 shooting, to cut the Michigan lead down to a point. Memphis eventually tied the game and took the lead, 27-25, on three-straight layups by Carmouche. However, Michigan did not get rattled and scored ten unanswered points over the final 3:02 to enter halftime with a lead. After a sensational shooting performance against Belmont, Memphis shot only 35.5 percent (11-of-31), including a paltry 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from three-point range in the first half. In contrast, Michigan shot 60 percent (15-of-25) from the field and 30 percent (3-of-10) from three. A Will Barton three-point shot at the 15:32 mark of the second half pulled the Tigers within five, 46-41, but the Wolverines responded with a 9-1 run over a span of 3:52 to regain control of the game. Michigan steadily increased its lead to as many as 14 points with 5:32 remaining. The Tigers used a 7-2 run to cut the lead to single digits, only to have the Wolverines again push the lead out to as many as 15 points. Tigers Tails Memphis and Michigan are now tied in the all-time series 2-2. The Wolverine victory snapped a two-game winning streak by the Tigers.
