1 fivesmarch 2012 Hello! Welcome to our awesome second High 5 newsletter. My name is Pippa, face of England Netball s exciting under 11 s High 5 game. I was one of the lucky 14 netballers selected as the Face of Netball. I got the chance to meet Stacey Francis, England player (omg!) at the photo shoot for my picture below! We ve got some fab games for you to try, posters to print out for your wall, and get colouring with a netball twist. Congratulations to Leah Smith from Gardners Lane Primary School in Cheltenham for winning the High 5 quiz. A High 5 ball is on its way to your school. 2 Loads of you got back in touch with us asking for more information on High 5 Netball for your primary school. Here s how it works Positions Depending on how many you have it s a minimum of 7, maximum of 9 with five on court at any one time. 1. Goal Keeper 2. Goal Defence 3. Centre 4. Goal Attack 5. Goal Shooter Gk GD 6. Centre Pass Maker 7. Time Keeper 8. Scorer C 9. Scorer Gs GA Rotations This is the hardest part, but make sure you download the Rotation Sheets to help from GK C GS Simply explained it s works like this scorer Squad of 7 time keeper GA GD GK GS Centre pass maker scorer Squad of 8 GD C GA time keeper GK Centre pass maker GS C scorer Squad of 9 scorer GA time keeper GD More information The netball post should be 2.74m high and on most netball posts this means that you may have to lower the net from the top of the post. Players must pass or shoot within 4 seconds Players should rotate after each quarter, half and before the start of each game Teams should change ends at each interval When starting or restarting the game after a goal the ball must be caught or touched in the centre third 2

4 High 5 in NumbErs is the number of players 7-9needed for High x 15.25m Size of a netball court 2.74 metre height of the goal posts Seconds is the time you have to shoot 4or pass the ball 1 METRE Distance a defending player must be away from the person with the ball. And a couple more facts just because we can - 3 The number of Thirds on a netball court 1/3 of primary school age boys (and four in ten girls) view netball as a sport for both boys and girls. 44% of 5-10 year olds say netball is their fav sport. 72% of girls think it s cool for girls to participate in sport. 4
5 Meet Emma Dovey What age were you when you started playing netball? 10 What was the name of your Secondary School? Balshaws High School, in Leyland, Lancashire What was the name of the first club you played for? Leyland Netball Club What is your favourite position on court? Even though I play GD and WD at Northern Thunder and England my favourite position is actually C. I used to play this when I was younger and still play it for club occasionally. How tall are you? 6ft. What s the hardest part about being an England player? Travelling around the country for training every week and missing important events due to netballing commitments! What s the best thing about Netball? I ve made some of my best friends at netball over the years which is definitely what makes it so enjoyable. And I love anything competitive! Who is your role model? Steven Gerrard What is your worst habit? Cracking my fingers!! What are the most played songs on your Ipod? Ed Sheeran, Beyonce and Westlife. Which sports star would you like to be for the day? Anna Kournikova or Usain Bolt, because being that good at any sporting event is phenomenal! School games If you haven t heard or played in the School Games yet, it s never too late to tell your teacher you d like to get involved. School Games Netball can take place indoors or outdoors depending on what you have at your school. Level 2 events will be organised by your local School Games Organiser and you can enter this event through them. Level 3 if you are really good at Netball, the winners/runners-up will have a chance to go to the Level 3 County wide Final! primary Intra-school/Level 1 Resource - challenge card netball - shoot the ball Quick introduction This is a shooting challenge that can be played with or without goalposts. Getting started Put students into groups of two or three. Those not shooting, or passing ball count the points scored. Demonstrate the shooting action and allow plenty of Practise in twos: Player 1 is the post and stands with hands up.
