Key Contacts So you re already a netballer? Great! We want to spread the love for the sport, and want to help you do this too. The good news is, you re not alone. England Netball have a Netball Development Officer in every county who can help you find things like equipment for sessions, facilities to train in, coaches to give you tips and funding to help you get started. Your Netball Development Officer details can be found by visiting There are also 19 Netball Development Community Coaches across the country that both coach, and develop Back to Netball sessions. Who s Who? NDO Local Netball Development Officers (NDO) Are employed by England Netball to increase the number of netball opportunities and number of people playing netball. There is one in every county in England, so there is plenty of support to help you! This could mean helping to set up new club, identifying a league for you to join, or finding coaches to run some Back to Netball sessions. NDCC Netball Development Community Coaches (NDCC) Are employed by England Netball to support the increase of participation in netball. There are 19 across the country, who are based in areas of high population (such as London, Birmingham & Newcastle), and coach adult netball sessions, including Back to Netball. NDCCs could help you in coaching your sessions, or linking you with other sessions or with leagues locally. RM & RCO Regional Managers & Regional Coordinators Each Region has a Regional Manager and Regional Coordinator. Often our NDOs and NDCCs are out on the road, so if you are wanting immediate information between 9-5, Monday- Friday, be sure to get in touch with your Regional Office; these details can be found here: CSP County Sports Partnerships Are organisations funded by Sport England to support National Governing Bodies (including England Netball) with increasing sports participation. They run a series of Workplace Challenge events, aimed at getting workplaces active and healthy. As part of this, they support our NDOs and NDCCs to run Workplace Challenge Netball Festivals. 7 ! Don t forget Be sure to check out existing sessions on our Netball Finder! Need to check the branding for each element Challenge yourself! If you haven't already, check out the Workplace Challenge websitewww.workplacechallenge.org.uk. You can use their Activity Log to record your levels of sport, physical activity and active travel online, and compete against other workplaces at the same time! Workplace Netball 7
The basics you need to know Insurance Information Unless you are a member of England Netball or have your own insurance for taking part in sport, you will be participating at your own risk when taking part in a Back to Netball session or Netball Tournament/Festival. You do, however, have the opportunity to become part of the England Netball family and become an official member. There are a couple of ways you can do this: England Netball Membership For full peace of mind that should you have an accident you would be covered, you can become a fully-fledged member of England Netball. As well as providing comprehensive liability and personal accident insurance cover, there are many other benefits and reasons to join England Netball, including: A quarterly magazine & monthly digimagkeeping you up to date with everything in the world of Netball A Countdown Card- providing you with discounts in shops & restaurants, and much more! Live Streaming- of our Vitality Netball Superleague matches Preferential rates with Go Girl s Car Insurance Back to Netball Membership There is the option to become a Back to Netball member; you will get Personal Accident Insurance which provides cover at England Netball Back to Netball sessions as well as Back to Netball festivals. You will also receive quarterly netball magazines and digimags. This category of membership is available only to new members, or returning members who have not been a member of England Netball within the last three years. If you have questions, drop the Membership department an on affiliations@englandnetball.co.uk Find out how you can join England Netball by clicking here. Note that you cannot become a standalone member- you must affiliate through a team. That team may already be in existence, or it may be that you are creating your own (if this is the case- read on for more advice!). Workplace Netball 8
Booking a facility to play Netball There are plenty of great facilities you can play netball in- both indoors and outdoors, though we recommend sourcing indoor courts so you don t have to cancel for bad weather! Most leisure centres and schools will have netball lines on the floor of their sports halls. Here is a list of points you may wish to consider when hiring a netball court: Depending on where you live, the average costings of indoor netball courts will be between per hour, and per hour for outdoor netball courts (if you are unsure for your area, be sure to get in touch with your Netball Development Officer/ Netball Development Community Coach) If you are planning on playing outdoors, check if they have floodlights so you can continue to play when it gets dark Sports hall availability in some areas can be hard to come by, especially at peak times. Having said that, most centres will try and accommodate you. A daytime slot (i.e. at lunchtime) is easier to get hold of, and sometimes you can then negotiate on the costs! Check the court has netball lines and posts Leisure centres and schools aren t the only place you can play netball. We have many sessions running in community halls or on MUGAs (Multi Use Games Areas). To get these up and running we ve had to be creative, for example, using basketball hoops instead of netball posts, or moving tables and chairs and marking courts on the floor using chalk/tape (after we asked for permission of course!). There have been companies who have utilised their own office space to play netball. Check out this video of a hospital trust running netball in one of their meeting rooms! Here is an example risk assessment you could use to assess whether the courts are suitable for playing on. Don t forget: your Netball Development Officer/Netball Development Community Coach will have a good grasp of what facilities are local to your area, and will be able to help get you the best deal. Workplace Netball 9
Where to source equipment To start a netball session, the minimum you will need are some size 5 netball s and bibs. There are many places to get good quality netball equipment. Here are a couple of our recommendations: The England Netball store is one of the best one-stop shops for all things netball, including balls, posts, clothing and trainers. All of the vital things you need to start playing! England Netball have a great relationship with Harrod UK who provide good quality netball posts. Ideally you ll be using socketed posts which are sunken in to the ground, however, there are also some great wheel away posts which could be perfect for playing in an area that doesn t have the socket in the ground, such as community leisure centre, or even your work car park! Funding: Who can help you If one of the barriers to setting up a regular netball session, or entering your local league is money, your Netball Development Officer or Netball Development Community Coach can help. They have great relationships with local partners and will have the expertise to help you to write a funding bid. You can find your local officer s details here. Next steps & setting up a team or club The biggest reason we run hundreds of netball sessions across the country is because we want to share our great sport with as many people as possible. If you and your colleagues decide to start up a proper team and join the local league, we can provide support every step of the way. We appreciate that setting up your own club can sound daunting, but it s pretty straight forward once you know what needs to be done. To help you we do have a great resource that you can use. To view our Be a Dream Team resource online please click here Alternatively you can download the resource from the app store. Just search Be a Dream Team and download! This way you can have it with you when you re out and about planning with your team mates, or setting things up with local facilities! We hope that you find the resource useful, but please do contact us if you need any more help. We look forward to seeing you on the netball court with your colleagues and enjoying all that netball has to offer! Happy Netballing! Workplace Netball 10
Inspiration Case Study 1 Workplace Festival into Back to Netball The Netball Development Community Coach ran a Workplace Mixed Netball Festival. Following the festival, a number of workplaces contacted the NDCC as they wanted to play more netball. The NDCC helped to set up a series of bespoke sessions; they found the venue, liaised with the Workplace Netball Ambassadorarranging for payment, and coached the session. With the support of the NDCC, who also helped to get them kit and equipment, these workplaces have been able to enter more festivals, and are now playing regularly in a local league. Bespoke Session Sainsbury s Head Quarters contacted the local Netball Development Officer to run a bespoke Back to Netball session. Sainsbury s had an employee interested in organising some netball and promoting it to staff. The employee worked closely with the NDO, and collectively they booked the venue, arranged the equipment and sourced a coach. Case Study 2 Case Study 3 Transitioning from Netball in the City to an England Netball partnered Commercial League A workplace entered a team into a festival called Netball in the City. Netball in the City events are organised by our Netball Development Community Coaches, to offer another opportunity for workplaces to get more active. At the event, information was provided on the local Commercial Leagues, along with their discount code for 15% off any new teams joining. As a result, a number of these workplace teams have now gone on to compete in a Commercial League, utilising the discount code provided by England Netball. Workplace Netball 11
