The last occurance came in 2008 when the Green and White dropped a to the University of North Dakota at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D. ALL-TIME IN SEASON LID LIFTERS: The Nov. 12 contest versus Loyola-Chicago marked the start of Eastern Michigan University s 35th year of women s basketball which began in The Eagles first-ever collegiate contest since the school began offering scholarships was a setback to the University of Michigan, Jan. 11, All-time the Eagles are in season lid lifters, including winning nine of their last 10 openers dating back to a victory over Cornell University, Nov. 16, 2001, at the Convocation Center. The AnnMarie Gilbert File Hard-working. Compassionate. Dedicated. Just a few words that come to mind when talking about AnnMarie Gilbert. On May 15, 2007, Eastern Michigan University introduced Gilbert as the seventh head women s basketball coach in the history of the program. In her first season in Ypsilanti, Gilbert proved up to her billing. Eastern Michigan posted a overall record and gained a share of the Mid-American Conference West Division Championship with an 11-5 mark. With the division crown, Gilbert became just the fourth first-year head coach in league history to guide her team to a MAC title. Additionally, her 17 wins was an EMU record for most victories by a first-year mentor and also ranks ninth best in conference history for a rookie coach. Gilbert made a statement in her first game, guiding the Eagles to a win over Temple Baptist College, Nov. 11, Her first conference victory occurred just a few months later, when EMU turned in a dominating victory over Northern Illinois University, Jan. 9, Year two was a rebuilding season for Gilbert and crew, as 77 percent of the minutes played came from underclassmen who had at least two more years of eligibility remaining. The third year of the Gilbert era looks to be even brighter with a core of returners and a nationally recognized recruiting class coming to town. This incoming class was ranked as the top in the Mid- American Conference and 59th nationally by Dan Olson s Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. The third year of the Gilbert era was even brighter with a core of returners and a nationally recognized recruiting class coming to town. With an incoming class ranked as the top in the Mid-American Conference and 59th nationally by Dan Olson s Collegiate Girls Basketball Report, the Green and White, as the Eagles finished with a 22-9 overall record en route to earning a berth in the Postseason WNIT. The Eagles became the first MAC women s basketball program to post a 20-win season following a year in which the team won less than 10 games. EMU also finished just one victory shy of equalling the Ohio University squad for the biggest single-season turnaround in league history. A rising star in the collegiate coaching ranks, Gilbert possesses 19 years of collegiate coaching experience, including 11 seasons as a head coach. She also spent five years as an assistant coach at Michigan State University, where she helped the Spartans compile an impressive record. During her time in East Lansing, the Spartans made it to five consecutive NCAA tournaments and to the 2005 National Championship game. At EMU Month-By-Month Ye a r No v. De c. Ja n. Fe b. Venerable St. John Arena played host to the Eagles lone NCAA Tournament contest versus Boston College, March 20, The No.14 seed in the Mideast Region, Eastern Michigan nearly pulled off the unthinkable against No. 3 seeded Boston College. History would not be on EMU s side, as 14-seeded team had never beaten a third seed in the history of the women s NCAA field. Trailing by as many as 18 points, 22-4, with less than five minutes elapsed in the game, EMU regrouped to out score BC, 52-36, over the final 35 minutes of play. Eastern took its only lead of the game with 3:22 left, when Ryan Coleman came out of the media timeout and hit a jumper to give EMU a edge. BC answered the next time down the floor, however, with a three-pointer to give the lead back, 56-54, with 3:02 left. Neither team scored for the ensuing 2:20 before Nikki Knapp tied the game at with 40 seconds left on an inside power layup. BC immediately called a time-out and drew up what would be the go-ahead shot. BC missed the initial jumper with 28 seconds left, but grabbed the offensive rebound that set up Kathrin Ress layup underneath the basket with 12 seconds left, leaving EMU trailing by two points. The Eagles took a timeout and set up a play for their best scorer, Coleman. EMU went for the win, but Coleman s three-pointer at the buzzer fell short of the goal, and the comeback effort ended in the loss. Schrock (16 points), James (16), Paige Redditt (14), Sydney Huntley and Olivia Fouty (10) each reached double figures for the Eagles. Schrock also notched 10 boards to earn herself a second-straight double-double in a home opener. James went 4-of-4 from the line while Huntley filled 7-of-8 and Redditt made 6-of-8. EMU AND THE HOME OPENER: Friday s, Nov. 12, home opener versus Loyola marked the 13th season of EMU women s basketball at the Convocation Center. The Eagles and Rainbow Wahine will be joined by Oregon State and Cal State Northridge at the tourney beginning Friday, Nov. 19. The trip will mark the second time that EMU has played in the state of Hawai i. EAGLE MAKE IT 2-0 IN EXHIBITION PLAY: The Eastern Michigan University women s basketball team finished its 2010 exhibition season with a perfect 2-0 record after handing a visiting Northwood University team a setback, Nov, 3, in the Convocation Center. Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert s Eagles relied on the same tactics that helped them beat Saginaw Valley, 84-60, in the first exhibition game, Oct. 29, mainly a smothering full-court press and some timely long-range shooting, to produce the win over Northwood. The Eagles turned over the Timberwolves 37 times while recording 23 steals. Eastern also connected on 11-of-26 three-point field goals for 42.3 percent from beyond the arc while also making 33-of-76 field-goal attempts for 43.4 percent. Northwood made just 17-of-46 field-goal attempts for 37 percent. Thirty-seven of the 45 voters picked BGSU to successfully defend the MAC Tournament crown in UT received six of the remaining votes, while EMU garnered the other two votes. NEW FACES ON THE STAFF: The season marks the addition of some new faces to the EMU sidelines, as Yvette Harris comes to Ypsilanti as an assistant coach and Cali Crawford was promoted to the director of women s basketball operations. Harris, an assistant women s basketball coach at Western Michigan University for the past two years, will primarily be responsible for scouting, recruiting, academic support and coaching the post players. A veteran in the coaching ranks with more than 26 years of collegiate coaching experience, Harris previously was the head coach at Central Connecticut State University from , where she led the Blue Devils to two consecutive Northeast Conference Tournament appearances, including the school s first in six years. Crawford was a standout student-athlete at Madonna University and EMU s team manager in Her primary responsibilities will include coordinating the Eagles travel arrangements, directing the summer basketball camp program, supervising the managerial staff, as well as other administrative duties PUTTING A WRAP ON THE SEASON THAT WAS: It was a magical campaign for the Eastern Michigan University women s basketball team, as the Eagles finished with a 22-9 overall record and an 11-5 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Coming off a rebuilding campaign that saw the Eagles win just eight games, third-year head coach AnnMarie Gilbert guided a relatively young squad, with just two seniors, and nine freshmen and sophomores to one of the nation s biggest turnarounds. JAMES POSTS A RECORD-SETTING YEAR: Tavelyn James posted one the of best offensive seasons in not only Eastern Michigan history but in Mid-American Conference history as well. The Detroit native finished the year at 20.7 points per game, making 220 of her 550 shots from the floor, to become the first EMU player since Sharon Brown in to average more than 20 points per contest. A 2010 first-team All-MAC selection, James moved atop the all-time scoring rankings among sophomores in league history. Ohio s Caroline Mast previously held down the league s sophomore standard of 635 points during the The 641 points also rank ninth most by a student-athlete in a single season according to the conference record book. Additionally, James shattered both the EMU single-season record for points in a season and the sophomore scoring standard. With that prolific total James became the first EMU women s basketball player to score 40 points in a game and just the seventh EMU student-athlete to do so. The last EMU basketball player to eclipse the 40-point plateau was men s basketball point guard Earl Boykins with 45 against Western Michigan University, Feb. 21, 1998, at Bowen Field House. In a span of two minutes midway through the second half against Buffalo, James scored 10 straight Eagle points, connecting on three consecutive baskets and going 3-of-3 from the free throw line. She had 32 points with more than 11 minutes remaining in the game and finished the contest 13-of-22 from the field, including 5-of-11 from long distance and 9-of-11 from the line to give her 40 points, tying her for the 11th-highest single-game point total in the nation that season.
