Under the guidance of coach Joey Jones, South Alabama boasts an unblemished 18-0 record since starting its football program during the 2009 season. Lamar University s players got an up close look at the quality of South Alabama s team in Beaumont last year when the Jaguars dealt the Cardinals a 26-0 defeat. South Alabama opened its season last Thursday night with a home victory over West Alabama. Sophomore running back Kendall Houston helped lead the way by rushing for a game-high 78 yards and two touchdowns. His scores came on runs of 2 and 10 yards. Freshman quarterback C.J. Bennett completed 12 of 21 passes for 151 yards, but he threw three interceptions. In last year s game against the Cardinals, Houston rushed for a career-high 164 yards, and Lawson McGlon kicked four field goals. It was South Alabama s third of three shutouts last season, and it was Lamar s first loss by shutout since a 21-0 defeat by Arkansas State in Three records tumble, another tied in season opener Junior running back DePauldrick Garrett, a transfer from Navarro College, made his Cardinal debut a spectacular one as he ran for a school-record four touchdowns and scored a record 24 points in Saturday night s 58-0 season-opening victory over Texas College. All four of Garrett s touchdowns came from 1 yard out, and he finished the game with 105 yards on 20 carries, making him Lamar s first 100-yard rusher since Danny Faust netted 130 in a 1989 game against West Texas A&M. Garrett s 24 points scored snapped the 26-year-old record of 20 scored by Harold LaFitte in a 1965 game against Pensacola Navy. Also, sophomore kicker Justin Stout of West Mesquite matched Lamar s record for extra points kicked in a game with eight. The only other Cardinal to kick eight PATs in a game was Walter Smith against Mexico Poly in Meanwhile, the Cardinals 58-point winning margin was the largest in school history. It exceeded the 48-point margin the 1961 Cardinals posted in a 1961 win over Mexico Poly. Lamar s defenders were dominant, limiting the Steers to five first downs, 45 rushing yards and 64 total yards on 51 plays.

McNeese State snapped that streak by beating the Cardinals 10-0 in their 1968 home debut. Cardinals running game shows huge turnaround With 209 yards, Lamar University s running game showed a huge improvement in Saturday night s 58-0 season-opening victory over Texas College over what the 2010 Cardinals were able to accomplish. In 2010, the Cardinals averaged 60.3 rushing yards per game, and they scored only one rushing touchdown in 11 games. Six of their eight TDs Saturday night came overland, including a school-record by four DePauldrick Garrett. The Cards had a season high of 147 rushing yards in their 14-0 homecoming win over Langston University last season, but the week before, they were held to a season low of a negative 23 ground yards in a loss to Sam Houston State. Garrett earned his in Offensive Player of the Week balloting by the league s sports information directors, while Jackson was honored among the defensive nominees and Stout among those for special teams. While rushing for 105 yards on 20 carries, Garrett, a 5-foot-8, 190-pound junior from West Orange-Stark by way of Navarro College, set Lamar records for touchdowns scored with four and points scored with 24. Stout, a 6-1, 160-pound sophomore from West Mesquite HS, tied a school record with eight extra point kicks, while Jackson, a pound senior from Humble, had five tackles (four solos), one quarterback for a 10-yard loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery inside the 10- yard line to set up a first-quarter touchdown.

3 Head Coach Ray Woodard Ray Woodard and his Lamar University football team enjoyed an historic year in Not only did the Cardinals take the field for the first time since 1989, but they turned a lot of heads with their immediate success on the gridiron. In their very first game at McNeese State on Sept. 4 they set a school record with 429 passing yards, and two weeks later at Southeastern Louisiana quarterback Andre Bevil led a fourth-quarter comeback that sparked a victory over the stunned and highly-favored Lions. Woodard guided the Cardinals to a 5-6 overall record, which included a 4-2 mark in newly refurbished Provost Umphrey Stadium while playing in front of capacity crowds in their first four home games, and that mark improved to 6-6 with Saturday night s 58-0 win over Texas College in which the Cardinals set or tied four school records. Although the Cardinals were not eligible for the Southland Conference championship last season as they did not play a full league schedule, the excitement generated by Lamar s resurrection of the football program was reflected in the fact Woodard was one of five finalists voted for the Southeast Texas Press Club s 2010 Newsmaker of the Year Award. McNeese State was ranked 11th in the nation when the Cardinals put a scare into the Cowboys before falling in the season opener for both teams. A week later, playing its home opener in front of a red-clad crowd of 16,600, Lamar earned its first victory in over two decades by a margin over Webber International. Lamar added four more victories, including the impressive comefrom-behind win at Southeastern Louisiana. A high-powered offense, which set 15 team or individual records during the season, became the signature for the 2010 Cardinals who closed the year with a dominating 44-6 dismantling of Oklahoma Panhandle State. Woodard was named the eighth football coach at Lamar University by university president James Simmons and then athletics director Billy Tubbs on May 19, He came to Lamar after serving three seasons at Navarro College - the first two as defensive coordinator and the final as head coach. His 2007 squad went 9-3 and advanced to the conference playoffs for the first time in six seasons. Navarro defeated defending national champion Blinn College on consecutive weeks before rolling past Kilgore - the SWJCFC regular-season champion - on the road to earn the school's first bowl bid since the 1990s. Navarro claimed a win over Georgia Military in the Pilgrim's Pride Bowl to finish the year ranked fourth in the NJCAA national poll. For his efforts, Woodard was named the SWJCFC Coach of the Year. From , Woodard served as the head football and track coach at Burton (Texas) High School, with the Panthers winning the district title in track in He spent two years as the defensive coordinator at Livingston (Texas) HS from and one season at Trinity HS in Trinity went 7-3 in Woodard spent three years as the defensive coordinator for the Scottish Claymores from during his second stint n NFL Europe. Woodard's other professional coaching experience came as the general manager/head coach for the Houston Outlaws ( ) of the Regional Football League, defensive coordinator of the Frankfurt Galaxy ( ) of NFL Europe and the Texas Terror (1996) of the Arena Football League. Woodard's first experience at the NCAA level came in 1998 when he was the defensive line coach at Louisiana-Lafayette. Lineman Danny Scott registered eight sacks, which ranks fourth in the ULL single-season list. From , Woodard was the defensive coordinator at Kilgore College and recruited more than 200 Texas high school student-athletes. The Rangers appeared in back-to-back Shrine Bowls in 1989 and Kilgore had a 9-2 record in 1990, won the conference championship and was ranked as high as No. 6 in the country. More on the rematch with South Alabama: South Alabama s Jaguars played their season opener last Thursday night before a crowd of 21,158 in Mobile s Ladd-Peebles Stadium, and the fans saw the Jaguars prevail over West Alabama Sophomore running back Kendall Houston helped spark the win with touchdown runs of 2 and 10 yards, and he was the game s leading rusher with 78 yards on 11 carries. In last season s game against the Cardinals, Houston rushed for a career-high 164 yards, and Lawson McGlon kicked four field goals much to the dismay of the overflow crowd of 16,150 in Provost Umphrey Stadium. It was South Alabama s third shutout of the 2010 season and Lamar s first loss by shutout since a 21-0 defeat by Arkansas State in The Jaguars held the Cardinals to 12 first downs (one rushing) and 161 total yards. They also forced four lost fumbles. South Alabama head coach Joey Jones Building a program is done in increments, and thus far the University of South Alabama has climbed the ladder of success with relative ease thanks to the efforts of head coach Joey Jones. Now in his fourth year in charge of the program and his third on the field with the Jaguars, Jones has put together one of the top staffs in the nation, recruited more than 65 scholarship players to the program and lent a hand to the efforts to help the school s fund-raising program as well as to construct a $10 million fieldhouse. On the field, the results have surpassed even the school s most ardent supporters wildest dream -- an unblemished 18-0 record over two-plus seasons going into Saturday s game against Lamar University. Not only did the Jaguars go undefeated in 2009, they did the same in 2010 and they enter Saturday s game against the Cardinals after winning their 2011 opener over West Alabama. The Jaguars outscored their 2009 opponents by a whopping margin, and they continued their mastery in 2010 when they won 10 games by a combined score of Last season s Jaguar offense racked up an average of nearly 440 yards per game, and more importantly, it was balanced (232.4 yards rushing and yards passing). Defensively, the Jaguars shut out three opponents (including Lamar 26-0) and limited two others to single digits. The stingy Jaguar defenders surrendered an average of 81 rushing yards per game, and they recorded a plus 10 in the takeaway column. Jones is the former head coach at Birmingham Southern, and he is a native of Mobile. He gained experience at restarting a program as he had to do so there in Before moving into the college ranks, he compiled an impressive (76.7 percentage) in 13 seasons at the high school level, including a 10-year run at Birmingham s Mountain Brook HS, where he was from Jones is a 1989 graduate of Alabama, where he played football under legendary coach Bear Bryant. He finished his career with 71 receptions, 1,386 yards and 15 touchdowns, ranking fourth on the career TD receptions chart.

Garrett, a 5-foot-8, 190-pound junior transfer from Navarro College, rushed for 105 yards on 20 carries and scored a schoolrecord four touchdowns, all on 1-yard gouges into the line of scrimmage. Jackson, a 6-2, 215-pound senior letterman from Humble, logged five tackles (four of the unassisted variety), had one quarterback sack for a 10-yard loss, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Looking Ahead After playing South Alabama Saturday afternoon, the Cardinals will return home to host Incarnate Word University at 6 p.m. on Sept. 17. This will be the first meeting between Lamar and Incarnate Word in football. Incarnate Word is coached by Mike Santiago, a former head coach at both McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin and former assistant to Larry Kennan at Lamar. He has posted an 8-14 record in two-plus seasons at Incarnate Word, and he has an eight-plusseason career record of Also nicknamed the Cardinals, Incarnate Word opened its season last week with a home loss to East Central Oklahoma. The Cardinals scored on 3- yard pass from Paden Lynch to Robert Anderson, another 3-yard pass -- this one to Jacob Love -- and a 7-yarder to Trent Rios. Lynch finished the game 18-of-31 in the passing department for 124 yards and the three touchdonws.
