With eight returning reserves, along with four talented freshmen added to the mix, the Flames are poised this season to make another run for the league crown and the program s first NCAA Tournament appearance. Five seniors will guide this year s team, including All-Horizon League guard LaShonda Grant, who led the squad in scoring (15.1 ppg) last year while also tabbing 3.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Grant will receive plenty of offensive support from fellow seniors Krystal Hugelier (10.8 ppg), Jacquay Holmes (8.8 ppg) and Kelly True (6.7 ppg) while senior Jackie Parker resumes her role as one of the league s top defenders. With its four new additions, UIC gains height and a stronger presence under the basket. Cassie Johnson and Ashanti Walker join sophomore Nikki Grobbecker and junior Nicole Rinaldi down in the post, while Briana Hinkle and Jessie Miller add depth at the guard position. Rinaldi, the Flames fourth returning starter, paced the team last year with a.545 field goal percentage and averaged 1.4 blocks per game, which ranked fourth in the league. She also tallied a personalbest 6.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per outing. With four returning starters, a veteran bench and four solid newcomers added to its arsenal, there is only one thing on this team s mind, clinching the Horizon League regular-season and tournament title. 4 U I C B A S K E T B A L L G A M E N O T E S VETERAN SQUAD: This year s UIC women s basketball team includes four returning starters, a solid bench and four talented newcomers. Although the Flames lost stellar performer Chrissy Dizon, UIC has five seniors to help guide the team to another crack at the Horizon League Tournament title game in March of AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS: Senior guard LaShonda Grant will help pace the Flames after leading last year s squad and earning a sixth-place spot in the league, averaging 15.1 points per game. Grant showcased her offensive skills with a season- and game-high 30 points in UIC s victory over UW-Green Bay in the semifinal round at the Horizon League Tournament. Nicole Rinaldi ranked 12th in the league in rebounding (5.0 rpg), fourth in blocked shots (1.4 bpg) and 11th in defensive rebounds (3.6 rpg) last season. Jacquay Holmes held a 14th-place ranking with a.444 field goal percentage and Jackie Parker was tenth in steals, averaging 1.7 per game. DOWN THE STRETCH: UIC came barreling down the stretch last year, winning nine of its last 12 outings. During that stretch, the Flames averaged 71 points per game and shot 40 percent from the field, while totaling 120 steals. In the Horizon League Tournament, UIC continued to roll, downing Wright State and UW-Green Bay en route to its first-ever title game appearance. ON HER WAY: After just four short seasons, Lisa Ryckbosch is already UIC s second all-time winningest coach with 59 career victories. Ryckbosch trails Eileen McMahon, who totaled 89 wins in eight seasons. Ryckbosch also already owns the Flames second-best all-time winning percentage (.513). OFF THE BENCH: The squad features nine reserves, including seven players that made appearances in 18 or more games. Coming off the bench last season, senior Jacquay Holmes finished fourth on the team in scoring (8.8 ppg) and earned a starting spot in eight of UIC s last ten contests. The forward averaged 12.5 points per game in those eight outings, while totaling 26 rebounds. GETTING TALLER: With the addition of two centers in its rookie class, UIC will now have 10 players over 5-foot-10. Two of the four newcomers will vie for a spot at center with each measuring in above the 6-foot mark. Returning center Nicole Rinaldi is still the team s tallest player at 6-foot-3. ADDITIONS: Two rookie guards and two centers will add to UIC s solid nucleus in Guard Briana Hinkle helped her team to two conference and district championships while averaging 16.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.3 steals per game her senior year. Jessie Miller joins Hinkle in the backcourt after averaging 16.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while helping her team to a state championship appearance. Cassie Johnson, a 6-foot-2 center, averaged 14.9 points and 12.0 rebounds per game her senior year and will be aided in the post by fellow freshman Ashanti Walker, a 6-foot center who was an all-conference honoree at Thornwood High School. 5 L I S A RYC K B O S C H Head Coach * 5th season * (.513) Led UIC to its first-ever Horizon League Tournament title game appearance in There seems to be a few common traits that tie together those people who call themselves Chicagoans; a blue-collar work ethic, a family orientated attitude and a passion for the city s sports teams. It s these traits that have made Chicago such a destination for people looking to find a new place to call home. And it s these same traits that are the reason why many Chicago natives never want to leave. For UIC Head Women s Basketball Coach Lisa Ryckbosch, who was born in this city, grew up in this city and has over 19 years of basketball coaching experience in this city, Chicago has always been her kind of town. The UIC women s basketball program has been the benefactor of Ryckbosch s hometown tutelage, as the Flames have made huge strides as a program under her direction since she was hired on April 25, In just four short years, Ryckbosch is already UIC s second all-time winningest coach with 59 victories, while guiding the Flames to their highest ever league regular-season finish (2nd, 2003), their first-ever appearance in the Horizon League Tournament title game (2006) and their first-ever vote in the Associated Press Top 25 poll (Nov. 2002). She has developed 11 all-league performers during her tenure with those players helping the Flames set single-season team records in both three-pointers made (200, 05-06) and steals (344, 02-03). Ryckbosch has built UIC into a successful program by attracting top student-athletes. Her extensive knowledge of the `Windy City, has allowed her to lay down the recruiting groundwork to keep the top recruits from the talent-rich Chicagoland area close to home. The roster contains eight Illinois players, including LaShonda Grant, an All- Horizon League performer from Chicago s Marshall High School. Coming off their first-ever trip to the Horizon League title game, the Flames return four starters and 10 of 11 letterwinners that will guide the squad. This team is dominated by veterans who have played many minutes for our program, Ryckbosch said. They understand what needs to done and they are ready to do it this season. Ryckbosch enjoyed a great start to her UIC head coaching career as the Flames posted 17 wins in , which was the second-most in school history and the most victories since the campaign. The team also tied the school-record for Horizon League wins with 11 during her rookie campaign, on the way to the Flames first-ever, second-place conference finish. Ryckbosch came to UIC after spending 11 seasons on the coaching staff at DePaul University, where she served most recently as associate head coach under Doug Bruno. She had been instrumental in bringing top Chicagoland and national talent to the Blue Demons successful women s basketball program, including five players that competed in the WNBA. While at DePaul, Ryckbosch helped guide the Blue Demons to five NCAA Tournament appearances and three WNIT berths. DePaul owned a record of during her tenure, while winning a pair of Great Midwest Conference titles (1989; 1991) and the first-ever Conference USA regular-season championship in Prior to her stint with the Blue Demons, Ryckbosch, ironically, got her collegiate coaching start as a member of the UIC staff in , serving under then-head coach Eileen McMahon. Ryckbosch began her coaching career at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, Ill., where she served as the Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach and Math teacher for three years. Ryckbosch enjoyed a standout collegiate career at Loyola (Ill.). She was a four-year starter and two-time team captain for the Ramblers from and still ranks fourth on the school s all-time scoring (1,296) and rebounding (765) charts. She played an instrumental role in leading Loyola to a school-record 23 wins and the inaugural North Star Championship - now the Horizon League - in Ryckbosch is married with two children. Her husband Bart, a native of Belgium, is the Archivist at the Art Institute of Chicago. Ryckbosch s oldest son, Steven, is a 17-year old junior at St. Ignatius College Prep, while Peter is an 12-year old sixth grader. The Ryckbosch family makes their residence in the Old Irving neighborhood on Chicago s northside.

6 Entering his fifth season as Head Coach Lisa Ryckbosch s top assistant is Kevin McManaman. McManaman, who has over 12 years of collegiate coaching experience, works with the Flames guards while serving as the recruiting coordinator along with various scouting duties. UIC s guard play has been a strength of the team since his arrival with Chrissy Dizon going from walk-on to two-time All-Horizon League recipient and LaShonda Grant blossoming into the team s leading scorer en route to all-league accolades her sophomore and junior years. Ryckbosch finds McManaman s enthusiasm for coaching to be contagious. Kevin s work ethic, passion and integrity have had a great impact on the program, Ryckbosch said. He has done an exceptional job of educating the basketball community about the direction the program at UIC is headed. He is an excellent teacher, who is committed to helping the players improve. Prior to UIC, McManaman served two seasons as an assistant coach at Marquette University. While working for the Golden Eagles, McManaman responsibilities included scouting, conditioning, administrative duties as well as serving as the Camp Director for Marquette s girl s basketball camp. Prior to his stint with Marquette, McManaman served as the assistant women s basketball coach at St. Mary s (MN) from 1993 to During his tenure, McManaman served as the recruiting coordinator and coached guards. McManaman also served as the Assistant Softball Coach for three years at St. Mary s and helped the Cardinals to the 2000 Division III National Championship. He then rounded out his career at St. Mary s as the Associate Athletics Director from May to September of McManaman, a native of LaGrange, Ill. and a graduate of Lyons Township, is well known throughout the Midwest as he has worked numerous different camps and clinics. Why I love coaching at UIC... K E V I N M C M A N A M A N Assistant Coach Fifth Season From the day that I stepped onto the campus of UIC for my interview, I have been nothing but impressed. My eyes lit up as head coach Lisa Ryckbosch showed me around the Flames Athletic Center. Even today, I can still say that my eyes light up every day as I show prospective recruits and parents around our top-notch facilities and neigborhood around UIC. The players that I have had the opportunity to coach has given everything to building UIC into a contender, and I have enjoyed getting to know each and every one of them. Lisa s dedication and work ethic have rubbed off on our players and me, and I can t wait to see the final results. A M A N DA R E E S E Assistant Coach Third Season Entering her third season with the UIC women s basketball team is assistant coach Amanda Reese. In her first year with the Flames, Reese helped guide the team on a memorable run in the second half of the season, which included an eight-game winning streak, a fourth-place finish in the Horizon League and the squad s first league tournament victory since Last season, Reese and the Flames wrapped up the season with their second-highest league finish (3rd-place) in school history and made their first appearance in the Horizon League Tournament title game. For four years prior to her arrival with the Flames, Reese was the `Jack of All Trades while serving as the lone assistant women s basketball coach for the University of Chicago, performing a multitude of tasks for the Maroons, including recruiting coordinator and perimeter coach. Prior to her stint in Hyde Park, Reese spent one season at DeKalb High School as the girls assistant varsity coach as well as the junior varsity coach during the school year. Reese was a highly decorated student-athlete during her playing days at Northern Illinois ( ). A three-year captain for NIU, she was named the Huskies MVP in Reese topped the 1,000 point plateau during her tenure and ranks second in the Huskies career record book for assists. The Ohio native left an impression on the DeKalb campus off the court as well, as the NIU Athletics Department now annually gives the Reese Leadership Award, in her honor, to a selected student-athlete. A former Miss Ohio Basketball who led Beavercreek to the state championship in 1995, Reese continues to give back to her hometown community as she and her high school coach have run the Amanda Reese and Ed Zink Basketball Camp since June of Why I love coaching at UIC... I am very excited to be a part of a growing basketball program that is headed in the right direction. Located in one of the most vibrant cities in the world, UIC has much to offer to student-athletes, both academically and athletically. At UIC I am working with a great coaching staff who are good people, e know basketball and are committed to taking this program to the next level.

7 L ATA S H A W H I T E Assistant Coach Fourth Season Now in her fourth season on the sidelines as an assistant coach with the UIC women s basketball program is Latasha White. The Chicago native and former Taft High School standout has been a huge asset to the Flames during her tenure as she works with the team s post players. She aided in the development of current starting center Nicole Rinaldo, as well as former standout Dejeanette Flournoy, who was a two-time leading rebounder for the Flames and garnered All-Horizon League accolades following her senior campaign in White was just a couple of months removed from graduating from DePaul when she was hired by Ryckbosch as an assistant coach. While with the Blue Demons, White found success as both a player and a student assistant coach, giving her a wealth of experience to bring to UIC. She played in 21 games during the campaign and helped De- Paul to the second round of the WNIT. A knee injury, however, ended White s playing career and moved her to the Blue Demons bench as a student assistant coach. While on the bench as a coach for DePaul during the campaign, White and the Blue Demons advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Some of White s responsibilities at DePaul included: organizing practice, assisting with training and conditioning along with film exchange. Prior to her time at DePaul, White spent two seasons at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College, where she received honorable mention All-American, All-Region and All-Conference honors. As a sophomore, White averaged 12 points and nine rebounds, leading NE Oklahoma to a fourth-place finish in the country. White, a graduate of Taft High School, helped the Eagles to their best finish ever in 1998, finishing in the `Final Four of the Chicago Public League. During that campaign, White averaged 15 points and led the league with 15 rebounds per contest. Why I love coaching at UIC... I love coaching at UIC because the program brings out the excitement of competition and the thrill of winning. It is exciting to be able to help each of the these young women understand what great talent they have to offer. The experience here at UIC has been awesome. It has been everything I thought it would be and more. Lisa s attitude and work ethic has really led them to believe in themselves as well as the program.
