Steelers suitor to get his answer by tomorrow Page 1 of 1 SPORTS / STEELERS & NFL Steelers suitor to get his answer by tomorrow Four Rooney brothers may want new bids Thursday, September 18, 2008 By Gerry Dulac and Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Even if four of the Rooney brothers decide not to sell each of their 16 percent shares in the Steelers franchise to New York billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller, it does not necessarily mean they are prepared or even willing to accept an offer made by their brother, Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has learned. Sources who are intimately familiar with both sides of the ownership situation have indicated that the four Rooney brothers - - Tim, Patrick, John and Art Jr. -- might seek another outside bid in an attempt to gain even more money for their shares, a move that would cause Mr. Druckenmiller to withdraw his offer and further prolong a process that has been going on for two years. Yesterday, a representative of the four Rooney brothers informed Mr. Druckenmiller, chairman of Pittsburgh-based Duquesne Capital Management, that the brothers are undecided if they want to accept his offer. However, the representative told him the brothers would likely give him an answer by tomorrow, keeping with an unofficial deadline issued by Mr. Druckenmiller six weeks ago. The brothers are scheduled to vote today if they want to accept Mr. Druckenmiller's offer. Even if they decline his offer, the Rooney brothers might decide to seek another investor once a calamitous economy settles rather than accept the offer made by Dan Rooney and his son, Art II, the team president, according to the sources. Such a move could also create a bigger problem for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, whose strict guidelines prohibiting association with racetracks were the impetus for the restructuring of the Steelers ownership. Mr. Goodell told the Steelers that anyone who has interest in racetracks and legalized gambling casinos cannot be involved in the ownership group. That would involve at least three of the brothers: Tim, who operates Empire City at Yonkers (N.Y.) Raceway; and Patrick and John, who run the Palm Beach Kennel Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. Dan Rooney has divested his interest in the racetracks. Mr. Goodell also wants at least one owner of a franchise to have at least 30 percent of their team's stock. No timetable has been set by the league to resolve those issues. However, those guidelines are among the reasons Dan Rooney, who also owns a 16 percent share in the franchise, is seeking to gain at least 30 percent of the stock. The remaining 20 percent of the stock is owned by the family of the late Jack McGinley Sr. Mr. Druckenmiller has offered an immediate cash payment to purchase the 64 percent shares owned by the four brothers and gain controlling stock interest in the franchise. The offer was made nine months ago. He is not interested in being a minority partner, and sources have told the Post-Gazette he would immediately withdraw his offer if the Rooney brothers sought a bid other than the one being made by Dan Rooney. While Mr. Druckenmiller's offer is not known, the Steelers franchise was recently valued at slightly more than $1 billion by Forbes Magazine -- a figure comparable to the $800 million to $1.2 billion estimated value placed on the franchise by Goldman Sachs, the Wall Street investment bank that is brokering the deal for the four Rooney brothers. Using a median price of $1 billion, that would place Mr. Druckenmiller's offer in the neighborhood of $640 million. Dan Rooney has made two offers to his brothers, and his plan would require payments being spread over a number of years. First published on September 18, 2008 at 12:00 am

Line: Hits on Big Ben will stop Page 1 of 2 SPORTS / STEELERS & NFL Line: Hits on Big Ben will stop Steelers VS. Eagles Thursday, September 18, 2008 By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The Steelers detest seeing Ben Roethlisberger bounced around in the pocket with what they feel are late and illegal hits and promise to handle it one way or another. "A lot of us as a line feel we have to protect him a little more outside the whistle," tackle Willie Colon said yesterday. "Guys are going to take shots at him and try to knock him down. He makes us run, so if we see stuff like that we have to kind of be there and get after guys who try to do stuff like that. I'm going to be looking for it, especially this Sunday." Roethlisberger, who went through a full practice yesterday, has been sacked five times and has a slight separated right shoulder because of one. That's bad enough, but he also has been hit twice on questionable calls not involving a sack. One occurred late in the first half against Houston when defensive tackle Amobi Okoye hit him low, causing a slightly hyperextended knee. Hitting quarterbacks low is illegal in the NFL, but no flag was thrown on that play. Then Sunday, Cleveland's 350-pound nose tackle Shaun Rogers slammed into Roethlisberger well after he threw a pass. No flag was thrown on that play either, which incensed some of his teammates. Linebacker LaMarr Woodley was penalized earlier in the game for hitting Cleveland quarterback Derek Anderson just as he released the ball. "I saw that, now that was very late," guard Kendall Simmons said of Rogers' hit. "How can you not see Shaun Rogers make a hit like that?" Colon wondered about the officials who called no penalty. "Especially before the game when Andra Davis was saying he'll take the fine?" Davis, the Browns' middle linebacker, was quoted Saturday in the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he and his teammates had to rough up Roethlisberger even if it meant doing so against the rules. "This game, we've just got to not worry about fines or late hits or whatever the referee is going to do," Davis told the Plain-Dealer. "We've just got to go out and get him down because you know they take care of the quarterbacks in this league. But we've just got to put that behind us. If we get fined, we get fined. We've just got to make sure we get the job done." Said Colon: "You hear remarks like that, you kind of take it personally. I know I do. We just have to be able to keep him as clean as possible and make sure there's nothing really dirty going on." The Steelers have sent a video clip of the Rogers hit to the league office. "When Woodley hit Derek Anderson, I don't think it was particularly late," Hines Ward said. "But they made the call. You'd just like to see it called both ways. It definitely wasn't. "What can you do? You turn it into the league and you hope the league comes back and judges it. But for us, we definitely want to protect our quarterback as much as possible. That's why it's so important for us as a unit to try to keep as many hits off him as possible." No one in the NFL has been sacked as often as Roethlisberger the past two seasons. He was sacked 46 times in 2006 and 47 last season, second and third most in franchise history. Five sacks in two games projects to 40 for the season, down slightly, but his percentage of sacks are higher. Last season, counting sacks, he dropped back to pass 451 times and was sacked percent of the time. This season, he dropped back 38 times and has been sacked percent. Now comes the blitzing defense of the Philadelphia Eagles, who will go after Roethlisberger with everything they have. Next Game: Steelers (2-0) at Philadelphia Eagles (1-1). When: 4:15 p.m. Sunday. Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia. TV: KDKA. The line: Eagles by 3. The skinny: The Steelers are 0-7 in Philadelphia since winning there in 1965.Bruised already

Line: Hits on Big Ben will stop Page 2 of 2 "Oh, of course, no doubt about that," Simmons said. "So there will probably be a couple of skirmishes in there. I can guarantee that. That's part of it." The linemen, though, say they are prepared to do whatever it takes to protect Roethlisberger the rest of the way. "You do whatever you have to do, if they want to take it to that step," Simmons said. "I'm not the type of guy to play dirty, that has never been my issue, but you don't sit there and let your guy get beat up on. You protect him. If they want to go after the whistle, then you do it and let the referees decide on what's going to happen after that because they can't let it happen, they have to do something about it." "He's taken some shots," Colon said. "For the most part, you can't help worry about him. He's a key factor for our success this year. "Hopefully they'll be clean about it. If not, as a line we have to protect him a lot more outside the whistle." NOTES -- The NFL named safety Troy Polamalu AFC defensive player of the week.... Nose tackle Casey Hampton (groin) was limited in practice yesterday. Those who did not practice were linebacker James Farrior (back), guard Chris Kemoeatu (ankle), cornerback Deshea Townsend (heel), linebacker Donovan Woods (hamstring) and Ward (no injury reason). 4 Roethlisberger: Sore, but OK - Tribune-Review Page 1 of 2 Roethlisberger: Sore, but OK By John Harris TRIBUNE-REVIEW Thursday, September 18, 2008 Ben Roethlisberger said the condition of his throwing shoulder has improved and won't prevent him from facing the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. "It's good," the Steelers quarterback said Wednesday. "It's not even worth talking about." Asked if he feels better than he did a week ago, when he missed the first two days of practices, Roethlisberger replied, "Yeah, I do. I was just sore. Who in here isn't sore that plays this game? Definitely better and making progress." Roethlisberger participated fully in yesterday's practice. Most of his passes were to receivers running short and intermediate routes. "Last week, I didn't really practice until Friday," Roethlisberger said. "Thursday, I actually took all of the snaps. Instead of throwing, I just went through all the motions and pointed to the guy I would have thrown to. It's a way to see the play, as coach says, in the helmet." Roethlisberger's injury, which he suffered in the Sept. 7 opener against Houston at Heinz Field, was diagnosed as a sprain of the AC joint in his right shoulder. He started the second game of the season against the Cleveland Browns and completed 12 of 19 passes for 186 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in a 10-6 win. Center Justin Hartwig spoke for most of his teammates when he said that Roethlisberger's performance against the Browns inspired the offense. "It's a morale booster when a guy's playing through pain," Hartwig said. "You lean on that guy a little more." Roethlisberger said defenses are probing the Steelers' offensive line, which yielded 47 sacks in 2007, looking for ways to get him on the ground. So far this year, Roethlisberger has been sacked five times and is on pace for 40. "We gave up a lot of sacks last year, so teams are really trying to exploit that," Roethlisberger said. "But I think my guys up front have done a pretty good job of shutting people down. "If I happen to get hit, it seems like they're right there to pick me up. They've got my back, and I've got theirs."

Roethlisberger: Sore, but OK - Tribune-Review Page 2 of 2 Roethlisberger, who attempted a total of 33 passes in the Steelers' first two games, expects the offense to lean on him more in the coming weeks, perhaps beginning Sunday in Philadelphia. "If you look at the way we played the first game, we didn't have to throw the ball much because we were winning," he said. "We were just running the clock out. Last week, the elements just kind of kept us from throwing too much. I think our true offense will start showing itself very soon." 6 Eason feeling more comfortable - Tribune-Review Page 1 of 1 Eason feeling more comfortable By John Harris TRIBUNE-REVIEW Thursday, September 18, 2008 â Nick Eason said he split about half of the snaps with Travis Kirschke at right defensive end after Brett Keisel left the Cleveland game with a calf injury. Eason doesn't know if the snaps will be divided the same way in Sunday's game at Philadelphia. "I've felt better, more comfortable. By being more comfortable in this defense, I'm able to play a little faster and with more confidence," said Eason, who joined the Steelers last season as a free agent. â Safety Troy Polamalu was named AFC defensive player of the week for his performance against Cleveland. Polamalu recorded his second inteception of the season and added four tackles, one tackle for a loss and two passes defensed. â According to center Justin Hartwig, the Steelers revamped offensive line passed an important test at Cleveland. "It was a good test for us to go on the road, play in a hostile environment where the noise was a factor," Hartwig said. â Several Steelers missed Wednesday's practice. Cornerback Deshea Townsend, who didn't play against Cleveland because of a heel injury, sat out as Bryant McFadden worked with the first team. Other players who didn't practice: guard Chris Kemoeatu (ankle), linebackers James Farrior (back) and Donovan Woods (hamstring), and receiver Hines Ward (coach's decision). Nose tackle Casey Hampton (groin) was limited in practice. Page 1 of 2 Print Page THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2008 :: Last modified: Thursday, September 18, :15 AM EDT Big Ben's teammates: Media overplays QB's injury status By Mike Bires, Times Sports Staff PITTSBURGH -- Every time Ben Roethlisberger s name appears on an injury report, it s big news in western Pennsylvania. But some of the star quarterback s teammates believe the subject is often overblown. Roethlisberger was somewhat limited at practice Wednesday but will definitely start Sunday when the Steelers (2-0) play the Philadelphia Eagles (1-1). You can t pick one guy in this locker room who is not banged up, Steelers tackle Marvel Smith said. But you guys (in the media) always want to talk about Ben. For the second straight week, Roethlisberger s bruised right shoulder has been a hot topic. Every since Roethlisberger suffered the injury while getting sacked in the Sept. 7 season opener, there have been daily reports in the media. Am I sick of it? It s really irrelevant to me, wide receiver Hines Ward said. We really don t care (about all the media hype). If he s hurt, he s hurt. If he s not, he s not. That s why we have Byron (Leftwich) as our backup. "If Ben plays, he plays. But if he can t go, the show must go on. As far as Ben s injury, it s out of our control. I know Ben will show up on Sunday. That s all that matters. Roethlisberger was listed as probable prior to Sunday night s 10-6 win in

.: Print Version :. Page 2 of 2 Cleveland. During NBC-TV s telecast of the game, broadcasters Al Michaels and John Madden said Roethlisberger was playing with a separated shoulder. That caused even more media coverage regarding Roethlisberger s shoulder. On Tuesday, coach Mike Tomlin said the injury was a sprain, not a separation. You know Ben has a little bruise. You know he s a quarterback, linebacker Larry Foote said. Us linebackers, that A.C. joint (sprain), we get that every week. So we just get a (pain-killer) shot and go play."

Page 1 of 2 Print Page THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2008 :: Last modified: Wednesday, September 17, :57 PM EDT Steelers notes: Ownership issues nearing resolution By Mike Bires, Times Sports Staff PITTSBURGH --- By the end of the week, there s a good chance the Steelers ongoing ownership issue may be resolved. Stanley Druckenmiller, a billionaire Wall Street investor from New York, has reportedly issued a Friday deadline to four members of the Rooney family who own 64 percent of the franchise. Those four men --- Art Jr., Tim, Pat and John --- are brothers of Steelers chairman Dan Rooney. Druckenmiller wants to buy out Dan Rooney s brothers and become majority owner. Right now, Dan Rooney and his four brothers each own 16 percent of the team s shares. The other 20 percent is owned by the family of the late Barney McGinley, whose son married the sister of team founder Art Rooney Sr. If Druckenmiller is successful in his bid to buy out Dan Rooney s brothers, the Rooney s long ownership run that started in 1933 would come to an end. Druckenmiller, an avid Steelers fan who s also a member at Oakmont Country Club, has reportedly offered each of Dan Rooney s brothers $200 million. Dan Rooney and his son Art Rooney II, the current team president, must match that offer to keep control of the team. Recently in its annual rankings of NFL franchises, Forbes Magazine rated the Steelers at No. 18 with a worth of $1.01 billion. Dan Rooney refuses to comment on the matter. RIDING FAST WILLIE After two games, Steelers running back Willie Parker ranks third in the NFL with 243 rushing yards. He trails Adrian Peterson (263) of the Minnesota Vikings and Michael Turner (262) of the Atlanta Falcons. But Parker does lead the league with most carries at 53. Peterson is second at 48. In Sunday s 10-6 win over the Cleveland Browns, the Steelers were hoping to give rookie Rashard Mendenhall some carries. But due to the complexion of the game, Parker got 28 carries to none by Mendenhall, the Steelers No. 1 draft pick who lost three fumbles in the last two preseason games. (To play Mendenhall) was the plan but Willie had that look in his eye, coach Mike Tomlin said.

.: Print Version :. Page 2 of 2 Willie is a competitor. It was one of those environments, a knock-down-and-drag-out game if you will. Willie was running the ball extremely well. He has great rapport with the offensive line and we liked the way the game was going. So we just continued to feed him the ball. Rashard s participation was based upon game circumstance. TOWNSEND STILL OUT Cornerback Deshea Townsend, who missed Sunday game in Cleveland with a heel injury, did not return to practice Wednesday. If Townsend doesn t practice today, his chances of starting Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles will diminish. Against the Browns, Bryant McFadden took over Townsend s spot in the starting lineup and played well. McFadden intercepted a pass, successfully defended three other passes thrown in his direction, and made five tackles. It s too early to tell if I ll be starting this week, McFadden. Maybe we ll know more (today). Other Steelers who missed practice Wednesday were linebacker James Farrior (back), guard Chris Kemoeatu (ankle), defensive end Brett Keisel (calf), linebacker Donovan Woods (hamstring) and wide receiver Hines Ward, who was just given the day off. Farrior, Kemoeatu and Ward are expected back at practice today. Keisel and Woods are out indefinitely. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder) and nose tackle Casey Hampton (groin) took part in some practice periods Wednesday but were limited in others.

Line has cleared way to 2-0 start Page 1 of 2 Line has cleared way to 2-0 start By F. Dale Lolley, Staff writer dlolley@observer-reporter.com PITTSBURGH - Physical play - like beauty - is in the eye of the beholder. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he has been pleased with the play of Pittsburgh's offensive line in the first two games this season. "I like where we are. I see growth," Tomlin said. "The guys played with an edge. It's a physical group. It's different than we had in the past because we have different players, but they're playing to their strengths. I like that because it appears to be very physical." It's something right tackle Willie Colon explained a little differently. "I don't think there's any team that's going to fight with us in the phone booth," Colon said. "That's our attitude. If they want to line up with us mano a mano, I don't think they want to do that." Some of that nastiness spilled over into the locker room Wednesday. Left tackle Marvel Smith seemed to take umbrage with Tomlin's suggestion that the line is playing with a more physical style than last season. "As much as we've ran the ball in the past, we've always played physical around here," Smith said. "It's not something new, where we go into games saying we've got to be more physical. That's the history of playing offensive line here." But is the line playing with greater intensity? "I can't say that by any means," Smith said. "You can look at film from last year and see what kind of intensity we brought to every game. For somebody to point that out now, go back and look at the film from last year and show one game where we didn't play like that." Pittsburgh's offensive line received plenty of criticism after Ben Roethlisberger was sacked 47 times last season, the second-highest total in team history. Because of that, and the fact the Steelers have two new starters - left guard Chris Kemoeatu and center Justin Hartwig - there's been plenty written and said about the line already this season. Those two new starters have been noted for their physical play and, through two games, things look better. Video review showed that one of the sacks credited to Cleveland's Shaun Smith should have actually been a pass Roethlisberger completed to himself after the ball bounced off the helmet of a Browns defender back into the quarterback's hands before he was tackled for a seven-yard loss. If that sack is taken away, the Steelers have given up four in two games while running back Willie Parker has had two 100-yard games and is leading the AFC with 243 rushing yards.

The Herald Standard - Sports Polamalu: Steelers' strong asfety shoots the b... Page 1 of 2 0 Polamalu: Steelers' strong asfety shoots the breeze By Jim Wexell, For the Herald-Standard PITTSBURGH - Troy Polamalu is back. After a 2007 season plagued by injuries, the strong safety has once again become a difference maker for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wednesday, Polamalu was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his role in the Steelers' 10-6 win over the Cleveland Browns. His interception at the goal line just before the half saved points in a low-scoring game and stopped the momentum from turning to the home team. Here's how the soft-spoken Polamalu responded to reporters' questions on Wednesday: Q: Do you feel like you had a Player-of-the-Week kind of game? Advertisement A: No. I didn't think so. It's obviously an honor, but everything happens so fast, from week to week. Are we talking about Houston? Cleveland? Philly? Everything moves along so fast that it's really tough to dwell on these types of things. So maybe at the end of the season you might think about it, if you even have time then. But I don't know. Q: You're making more splash plays than last year, aren't you? A: Yeah, coach has said that. But you guys, even though you're around the team a lot, you only see a small part of what goes on. You're not in our meeting rooms. Coaches are doing a good job of preparing us. We're doing a good job of taking care of our bodies during the week. There are a lot of things that go into what you see on Sundays and you only see a small part of it. The mental part of the preparation is very important. Q: What were you trying to accomplish when you dove over center? A: I don't know. Actually, I just saw that they were in a hurry-up situation and I expected them to do a quarterback sneak. We didn't have a defense called so I figured, you know, try something. Q: Did it work? A: No. It didn't work. Actually, nobody had a responsibility because there wasn't a defense called. Q: Does that happen often? A: No, it doesn't. Q: Did the dive have anything to do with the clock winding down to the two-minute warning? A: No, I'm not that smart. Charlie (Batch) actually asked me that, and I said, 'Charlie, I might run with that.' But then I'd be lying. Q: After signing that big contract last year, did you start feeling the need to make big plays? A: Not really, quite honestly. On this defense, I've played a lot of different roles. But this is kind of a defense that's more built around linebackers. The defensive line is awesome and doesn't get the credit it deserves, but the big splash plays come from our linebackers, and rightly so because that's the design, so I don't think so, no. Q: You guys have four interceptions in two games after 11 all last season. What's the difference? A: Well, we have 14 games to go, so we need to get seven before you stop complaining.

The Herald Standard - Sports Polamalu: Steelers' strong asfety shoots the b... Page 2 of 2 Q: How's the extra 10 pounds helping you this season? A: I feel pretty good. I don't think it's affected me consciously at all. The body feels good and there are a lot of different factors in that: I didn't play all preseason, didn't go to camp. Q: Are you taking a different approach mentally? Are you letting the game come to you more? A: Yeah, I think so. But I don't have as big of a role as I did. In our sub-packages, I'm on the back end a lot more. But Coach (Dick) LeBeau's going to change things up, obviously, as time progresses. Q: It obviously suits you. Do you like it that way? A: Yeah, I do. I do like it. I think it's good for the defense. Q: Will you have to keep your eye on Brian Westbrook this game? A: Yeah. They use him in a lot of different areas. He's treated as a wide receiver when he's outside of the core of their offense and when he's in the backfield he's a running back. That's how talented he is. But Donovan (McNabb) is just on fire right now. He's hitting big plays down the field to a lot of different receivers, so you can't really focus on just one guy when you have an awesome quarterback like that. Q: I know you don't watch a lot of football, but did you watch this past Monday Night game? A: No. Saw the score, saw the film, heard the breakdown. But there's a lot of emotion taken out when you can't hear the crowd or the announcers. Q: What did you do instead? A: My wife is pregnant, so I was just running to the refrigerator and back, or something like that. The Herald Standard 2008

The Herald Standard - Sports Steelers notebook Page 1 of 2 0 Steelers notebook By Jim Wexell, For the Herald-Standard Roethlisberger attempts to put topic of his shoulder injury to rest PITTSBURGH - Is it separated or just sore? That's been the question. "Obviously I'm sore," said Ben Roethlisberger. "But who isn't sore in here?" Advertisement Roethlisberger's trying to quell a bit of a tempest this week after telling the Sunday night announcing crew in Cleveland that his shoulder was slightly separated. Coach Mike Tomlin was angered at his Tuesday press conference by the revelation, and on Wednesday reporters had the chance to ask Roethlisberger. "Let's move on," was about all Roethlisberger would say before participating in practice that afternoon. "I'm making progress." The mini-drama doesn't seem to bother the rest of the team, particularly his go-to receiver, Hines Ward. "We don't really care," Ward said. "If he's hurt he's hurt; if he's not he's not. That's why we have Byron (Leftwich) as the backup. If Ben goes, he goes. We'd love to have him. If not, the show must go on. We've got to go out there and play. But as far as Ben's injury, it's not our concern. I know Ben's going to show up Sunday and be well prepared. That's all that matters. Nobody knows my injuries, so who am I to know how another man feels?" Could Ward tell that his quarterback's shoulder was sore Sunday night? "Not with that wind," he said. "We're not worried about Ben's shoulder. You guys are more interested than us." Not in the mood Left tackle Marvel Smith told reporters that he wasn't in the mood to talk about Roethlisberger's shoulder, either, so the conversation turned to underrated defensive end Trent Cole, the runaway sacks leader for the Philadelphia Eagles last season with "Anybody who watches Philadelphia, he's going to jump off the screen," said Smith. "Within the league I'm sure everybody knows him. Outside - the media and whatnot - you guys talk about what you want for the most part, but we all know about him. We know what he can do. He's one of the premier defensive ends in the league." Smith was then asked about his contact and potential to become a free agent after the season. "I've got a game this week," he said with obvious irritation. "You came over here to ask me about Trent Cole. I could care less about anything that's going on next year. It's not going to help me out this week at all. I could care less about it." Concerned? Not Nate The Steelers' No. 3 wide receiver Nate Washington has yet to catch a pass this season, but he says he's not concerned. "This early in the season, you try to get your base guys going," he said. "I'm just waiting. We're starting to divide it up more, getting me in the offense more, but right now it's just trying to put things on the field to open things up. But, any day now. Like I said, I'm just waiting."

The Herald Standard - Sports Steelers notebook Page 2 of 2 In his fourth season out of Tiffin, Washington has become a perpetual tease. Tomlin hinted at his Tuesday press conference that it's time for Washington to produce. "It's frustrating a little because you want to help the guys out, but at the same time I'm helping out by the little things I'm doing," Washington said. "But you do want the ball in your hands. I'm just being patient. We've had a lot of things in the game plan that we haven't run. Just getting the ball rolling, that's all." Injury report The following Steelers did not participate in Wednesday's practice: LB James Farrior (back), DE Brett Keisel (calf), G Chris Kemoeatu (ankle), CB Deshea Townsend (heel), WR Hines Ward (non-injury), and LB Donovan Woods (hamstring). Farrior, Kemoeatu and Ward are expected back Thursday. Eagles who missed practice were: G Shawn Andrews (back), RB Tony Hunt (hamstring), C Jamaal Jackson (non-injury), and DT Trevor Laws (quadricep). DE Victor Abiamiri (wrist) and WR Kevin Curtis (hernia) have been ruled out of the game. The Herald Standard 2008

McNabb's clutch-play issue Page 1 of 3 Posted on Thu, Sep. 18, 2008 McNabb's clutch-play issue By Bob Brookover It's fair to criticize Donovan McNabb for his botched fourth-quarter exchange with Brian Westbrook that led to Dallas' game-winning touchdown Monday night at Texas Stadium. He blamed himself. It's fair to say the quarterback should have run when he had room to take off on the Eagles' final offensive possession. And, yes, it's even fair to wonder whether McNabb is a really good quarterback who allows greatness to elude him because of his inability to come through in close and big games. His career record as a starter against playoff teams is That means he has won a lot of big games, but he's lost more. The quarterback's job at crunch time is to make the play or plays that make the difference in the game. That, of course, is everybody's job, but the quarterback has the best chance to make a difference because every play starts with the ball in his hand. McNabb's career record in games decided by seven points or fewer is It would be erroneous to say that all 24 of those wins or all 24 of those losses came down to something the quarterback did or didn't do. Still, it's enlightening to compare how some of the other elite quarterbacks have fared in the same situation during their careers. Tom Brady, for example, is in games decided by seven points or fewer, including a 7-2 mark in the postseason. Maybe that means he has a better team, a better coach, and a better plan at the end of games. That's all part of a quarterback's greatness, too. But it most certainly means that Brady has made more big plays at the ends of games than McNabb. Peyton Manning is in games decided by seven points or fewer, but just 2-4 in the postseason. As brilliantly as Manning has played in his career, he also was widely criticized for his failure to come through in the clutch until he won a Super Bowl two seasons ago. Brett Favre is in games decided by seven points or fewer, but only 3-4 in the postseason. He, too, gets a hall pass because of that one Super Bowl victory. Favre, like

McNabb's clutch-play issue Page 2 of 3 McNabb, hasn't always come through in the clutch, a fact Eagles fans saw firsthand in a playoff game after the 2003 season. It was his awful wounded-duck interception to Brian Dawkins in overtime that sealed the Packers' fate after McNabb had delivered a miracle with a fourth-and-26 throw to Freddie Mitchell. That, by the way, is McNabb's only playoff win in a game decided by three or fewer points. None of this is meant to disparage McNabb's talent, which is immense. It's also wrong to pin all of the blame for the Eagles' Week 2 loss on the quarterback, just as it was bogus to blame him for the team's Super Bowl loss to New England. He botched the handoff to Westbrook and made some questionable decisions on the final possession, but some people will have you believe it was his fault that Jason Witten went uncovered most of the night. "Donovan did some real good things," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He played very well if you look at that game from a whole." McNabb, of course, was every bit as responsible for the Eagles' being in that close shoot-out down in Texas as he was for what happened at the end. For anybody who wants to revisit the infamous Super Bowl drive that took too long to execute, we'll pull out the tape and show you a drop by Westbrook that was just as debilitating as any event that happened that night in Jacksonville. "It's really not fair," cornerback Sheldon Brown said. "At the end of the day, you win together as a team, and you lose together as a team. This isn't tennis, and this isn't golf. So many different things can affect the outcome." Fair or not, the quarterback and the coach are the guys who always endure the brunt of the blame at the end of a close game. McNabb knows the deal. "We didn't win," he said. "There were some positive things in that game, but when it comes down to it, we didn't win. I don't think anyone would say they played great because we didn't play good enough to win the game. You know, it's time to put that behind you and change the outcome this week." That is the good thing about the NFL. The Eagles have a chance to rebound Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers in another game that's likely to be decided by seven points or fewer. McNabb should have another chance to make a play or plays that can make the difference. There's still plenty of time this season for McNabb to prove he's at his best when the game is on the line. That's what the great quarterbacks do. Contact staff writer Bob Brookover at or bbrookover@phillynews.com. Find this article at: category=sports;&randomord=

Phil Sheridan: Brian Dawkins wants to prove Page 1 of 3 Posted on Thu, Sep. 18, 2008 Phil Sheridan: Brian Dawkins wants to prove By Phil Sheridan Inquirer Sports Columnist The cold truth is that Brian Dawkins can prove he is still a fearsome NFL safety in only one place, and that place is not the auditorium of the NovaCare Complex. On the football field, there is no hiding weakness, no covering up time's ceaseless erosion of strength and speed and skill. Because Dawkins is 34, it is all too easy to conclude from Monday night's game in Dallas that he has reached the expiration date that is stamped somewhere on every great athlete. Easy, but not necessarily accurate. This is not the way the prideful Mr. Dawkins would choose to be defended, but that doesn't mean it isn't true. As someone who has covered nearly every game of his long, Hall of Fame-worthy career, I can say with certainty that he has turned in the occasional clunker over the years. As a rookie, in his prime, and now in his twilight, Dawk has produced many great hits and an almost mathematically certain number of misses with his fullon, no-regrets style. Now that he is older, naturally, a poor game is blamed on age. This subject was brought up in several ways yesterday, until something changed in Dawkins' eyes and he decided to attack the subject as if it were Jeremy Shockey with his arms extended for a high pass. "I guess it's the age question today," Dawkins said. "I play the game the way that I play the game. I can tell you right now when I was 22 years old how I looked at film. How I looked at film when I was 22 was, 'This is the red formation or this is the "I" backfield, I hope they don't throw the ball deep, or I hope they don't play-action the ball and throw it deep because I'm probably going to bite on the play-action fake.' That's how I looked at film, or that's how I played the game." Words on the page can't convey the fire in Dawkins' eyes, or the way his intensity increased

Phil Sheridan: Brian Dawkins wants to prove Page 2 of 3 with each sentence. The media in the NovaCare auditorium got a real sense of what it must be like in the huddle, when Dawkins' game face is screaming encouragement to his teammates. "I am 34 years old and proud of it," Dawkins said. "Thank you, Jesus, for allowing me to get to 34 playing in the NFL. I am going to continue to play this game at a high level as long as I can. I am going to protect my body, make sure that I'm out there on the field for my guys, and I am going to play ball." By now it was like one of those speeches the main character gives at the climactic scene of a movie, the scene that makes you want to stand and applaud. "I'm going to play ball at 34," Dawkins said. "I'm going to play ball at 35, and whatever else comes after that, I'm going to play ball. So if I give up a deep ball and if you want to say I'm slow, go ahead. Guess what? The next time I'm going to try to make the same play again at 34 or 35 years old." With that, he thanked the crowd, stood up and walked off. It was a magnificent performance and, yes, at least this reporter had to fight the urge to stand and applaud. But it will take deeds, not words, to convince everyone Dawkins is still Dawkins. "I know the facts," he said before the final monologue. "The fact is, I can play this game and I can do what I need to do for my teammates, and so that's what I hold strong to. At the end of the day, that's what matters. What matters is what my coaches think and what they know and what my teammates know and what I know, and that's what I put my trust in." There's a reason the players don't grade their own performances. There's a reason Jim Johnson and his staff watch the game tapes and decide who can and cannot play, or what situations to put players in. It requires an objective eye, and objectivity isn't easy when it comes to a guy like Dawkins. It's not easy, but it's necessary. There was a time Johnson could build his defensive game plan around Dawkins' singular skill set. Now Johnson has to game-plan around a different reality. Dawkins is still a good NFL safety. He can't be asked to cover Terrell Owens one-on-one in the red zone anymore, but he still can make plays, especially against the run. He still hits hard and he's still a presence in the huddle. For now, the right thing to do is take Dawk's word and let him prove himself with actions. If he can't, well, words won't be necessary. Contact columnist Phil Sheridan at or psheridan@phillynews.com. 23 Ankle sprain to keep Colts' Bob Sanders out 4-6 weeks - USATODAY.com Page 1 of 2 Powered by Ankle sprain to keep Colts' Bob Sanders out 4-6 weeks INDIANAPOLIS Tony Dungy doesn't doubt Bob Sanders will be back in the Colts lineup this season. He's just not sure how long Sanders will be out. Advertisement The 2007 defensive player of the year could miss up to six weeks after spraining his right ankle last weekend at Minnesota, and team officials are contemplating whether Sanders may need arthroscopic surgery on his knee, too. "It's kind of similar to (receiver) Roy Hall's injury," Dungy said. "He had his knee scoped, too, so he's going to be out a while longer. If it's going to be two or three weeks, then it makes sense to get it scoped. But (defensive tackle) Keyunta Dawson had the same kind of thing and he told me he was going to practice today, so we're not really sure." Team president Bill Polian was more definitive Tuesday night while taping a segment for his television show. Polian said Sanders would miss four to six weeks. Dungy has been wary of establishing ironclad timetables since he told reporters that tight end Dallas Clark was expected to go on injured reserve after tearing his ACL during the 2006 season. Two days later, the prognosis changed and while Clark missed four games, he played in the season finale and had a prominent role in the Colts' Super Bowl run. The latest injury continues a strange even-numbered-year hex for Sanders, who played in just six games during his rookie season in 2004 and four games in In odd-numbered years, Sanders has started 14 and 15 games, respectively. Dungy wasn't even sure how Sanders was hurt at Minnesota. He left during the fourth quarter and hasn't been available to reporters since then. "I'm still learning the extent of it myself," Dungy said. "I guess, whether it was the 'dreaded high ankle sprain,' I guess I found that out Monday night." Losing one of the NFL's hardest hitters will certainly impact the Colts' struggling run defense. Indy has already allowed Chicago rookie Matt Forte and Minnesota Pro Bowler Adrian Peterson to each rush for more than 100 yards, and the Colts rank 28th in the league against the run. The likely replacement is second-year safety Melvin Bullitt, who made the team last year as an undrafted free agent. Bullitt finished with two tackles Sunday, but has often practiced with the starters, particularly on Thursdays hold Sanders out.

Ankle sprain to keep Colts' Bob Sanders out 4-6 weeks - USATODAY.com Page 2 of 2 "I feel like I'm prepared," Bullitt said. "It's always hard to replace a player like Bob, who was the defensive player of the year and, in my opinion, is the best safety in the league." Sanders' injury is the latest setback for a team that has been ravaged by injuries all season. Former league sacks champion Dwight Freeney missed all of training camp after sustaining a season-ending foot injury, which required surgery last November. Sanders, too, sat out training camp after having offseason shoulder surgery for the second straight year. Then in July, two more starters were hurt. Two-time league MVP Peyton Manning had surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee, which kept him sidelined six weeks. Linebacker Tyjuan Hagler tore a pectoral muscle while lifting weights. Hagler is still on the physically unable to perform list. It hasn't gotten any better. Since August, the Colts lost Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday, Clark and projected starting right guard Mike Pollak with knee injuries. Saturday and Pollak haven't played since Aug. 24, while Clark missed the second half of the season opener and was held out of the Minnesota game. Heck, even offensive line coach Howard Mudd is out after having knee surgery. On Sunday, things got even worse. Besides Sanders, the Colts also lost left tackle Tony Ugoh with a groin injury. While Ugoh isn't expected to play against Jacksonville, Saturday is and Clark could if he can stay healthy in practice this week. "It's great, great. How are you feeling?" Clark joked Wednesday. "Today is a big day. I'm going to go out there and get hit around and see how it feels. It feels good, it feels stable, so today will tell a lot. Hopefully, I'll make it through without getting any more sore." And the Colts believe they can get by temporarily without Sanders, their defensive leader, because they have a bye next week. "With a guy like Bob, of course, there's going to be some dropoff," Freeney said. "Maybe you won't see someone make that spectacular play, but you've still got to make plays. When one guy goes down, another guy has to step up, and there have to be 11 guys swarming to the ball." Find this article at: Check the box to include the list of links referenced in the article. 29 For Bengals, Chad Ocho Cinco Surprises On Field and Off - NYTimes.com Page 1 of 2 September 18, 2008 Ocho Cinco Is Creative on Field and Off By JOE LAPOINTE EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Now that Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson has legally changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco, has Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress ever thought of renaming himself something more imaginative? It would be embarrassing to my family, Burress said Wednesday after practice. I would never do that. Michael Johnson, the Giants free safety, may have to cover Ocho Cinco on some plays Sunday when the Giants (2-0) play host to the Bengals (0-2). He is not related to the former Chad Johnson. His momma, I bet you, still calls him Johnson, Michael Johnson said. Ocho Cinco, who wears No. 85 on his uniform, changed his name just before the season. His new name is Spanish for the numbers eight and five. On a conference call, Ocho Cinco was asked how his family reacted. What do you expect? That is what they said, Ocho Cinco said. That is what my grandma said and that is what my momma said. They didn t expect anything less. It shouldn t be any surprise. Ocho Cinco has been full of surprises and effective plays in his eight-year career. He has caught 564 passes for 8,424 yards and 49 touchdowns, but has not scored this season. Nor has he had much to say, by his standards. Oh, my goodness, you don t understand how bad I had to hold my tongue, Ocho Cinco said. I am doing my best to keep quiet and be a professional, like everybody likes to say. During the off-season, Ocho Cinco requested a trade, which never came. He did not wish to practice in minicamp, although he showed up. He sustained injuries to a shoulder and an ankle. Coach Marvin Lewis said everything is fine. It is good to have him back and not to worry about the other guy that was around here for the last two years, Lewis said. He has his spirit back and feels good. Over his career, some of Ocho Cinco s activities have been unusual, even by the flamboyant standards of N.F.L. wide receivers. In addition to touchdown celebrations, Ocho Cinco has squabbled with his quarterback, Carson Palmer, showed up with a blond Mohawk haircut and won a footrace with a horse for charity. But Ocho Cinco said most of his attention-seeking is in good fun and benign when compared with activities of other football players.

For Bengals, Chad Ocho Cinco Surprises On Field and Off - NYTimes.com Page 2 of 2 You think I m bad with all the stuff that goes on in the N.F.L.? he said. For what? I haven t been in trouble. Think about it. No D.U.I. s, no arrests, no nothing. I get in trouble for celebrating in the end zone. Ocho Cinco said he would like to wear his new name on the back of his jersey, but the N.F.L. has made him stick with his old name because of a contract it has with Reebok, which markets replica jerseys. To change, Ocho Cinco would have to buy all the current jerseys that have been manufactured, and it could cost him millions. I don t think my financial adviser would allow me to do that, he said. Ocho Cinco added that it would be wise for Reebok and the league to waive the requirement because everyone would make more money by marketing Ocho Cinco jerseys to his many fans in the United States and, he said, all over the world. I m not sure who the top dog is at Reebok, but an idea like this is how you stay ahead of the competition, he said. Reflecting on his career and his emotional temperament, Ocho Cinco conceded: I have been known to blow up. I m not going to lie. I think this year, I wouldn t say I have grown up, but I am a lot more patient. Johnson, the defensive back, said Ocho Cinco is like one of those backyard ballers. When watching Ocho Cinco on television against teams other than the Giants, Johnson said, I like to watch him clown and stuff. Ocho Cinco, when finished with his interview, turned semi-serious and made a request to reporters to send a message not to Johnson, but to Burress. Tell Plax I said, Hello and I love him, Ocho Cinco said. Copyright 2008 The New York Times Company Privacy Policy Search Corrections RSS First Look Help Contact Us Work for Us Site Map

After blowing a call that helped the Denver Broncos beat the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, the referee admitted he made a mistake on Wednesday and is answering from some fans telling them that, according to multiple media reports. "I'm getting hundreds of s -- hate mail -- but I'm responding to it all," Hochuli wrote to several Chargers fans, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. "People deserve a response. You can rest assured that nothing anyone can say can make me feel worse than I already feel about my mistake on the fumble play. You have no idea... Affecting the outcome of a game is a devastating feeling. Officials strive for perfection -- I failed miserably. Although it does no good to say it, I am very, very sorry." The crucial call occurred with the Broncos at the Chargers 1-yard-line in the final minute. Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler dropped back to pass, the ball slipped out of his hands, bounced off the grass and into the arms of Chargers linebacker Tim Dobbins. Hochuli, a former NFLRA president, ruled it an incomplete pass. Replay ruled it a fumble, but it was spotted at the 10, where the ball hit the ground, and given to Denver because the rules did not permit possession to be awarded to San Diego because the whistle had blown. Denver went on to score a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to win The NFL will give longtime official Ed Hochuli lower grades after he admitted botching a call late in the Chargers-Broncos game.
