PAGE 2 CANCUN CLASSIC RECAP CANCUN, Mexico Arkansas gymnastics scored a in the 2016 Cancun Classic, splitting decisions with Iowa ( ) and No. 7 Michigan ( ) at the Iberostar Hotel on Saturday night. Amanda Wellick was the Razorbacks lone all-arounder, and she netted a 3300 score, including a team-high 900 vault on Arkansas final rotation of the evening. Wellick finished third among all gymnasts in all-around and earned herself a large orange sombrero as a reward. Sydnie Dillard notched a team-best 875 on balance beam, as well as a 775 to begin the floor exercise rotation. Samantha Nelson turned in a 825 on floor and a 700 on beam. Paige Zaziski was not in the all-around lineup for the first time in her career, but still racked up solid scores of 850 on uneven bars, 825 on vault and 750 on beam. A few Gymbacks made their highly-anticipated debuts, including freshman Sydney McGlone, who competed on floor and vault. McGlone wowed the Arkansas fans in attendance when she scored 825 on floor, then followed with 875 on vault. Fellow freshman Makenzie Anderson also made her collegiate debut on beam and floor. Braie Speed competed on bars and vault, her first action since returning from a knee injury that kept her out all of Speed didn t disappoint, scoring 800 on bars and performing a vault of 775. GYMQUOTES It felt really good to start the season and this was a really fun meet to be a part of as a season opener. I m pretty happy about my performance but there s still room for improvement to help the team score higher. As a team I think we overall responded really well in this meet and overcame different obstacles. Junior Amanda Wellick This first meet was so fun and exciting. Obviously there s some room for improvement, but we finished the meet strong and I can t wait to continue the season. Freshman Sydney McGlone GYMBACK BUBBLES Keara Glover had a terrifying scare following the 2013 season. After doctors found aneurysms in her heart, she had surgery that summer. Glover has bounced back mightily since then, competing in 17 of the last 18 meets. Heather Elswick leads the charge for the Razorbacks in community service initiatives. Elwick has been the team s representative on the SEC Community Service team in back-to-back years and is on Arkansas SAAC Committee. Sydnie Dillard has competed in all 38 balance beam and floor exercise rotations since coming to Arkansas in She began a walk-on before earning a scholorship after her freshman season. Braie Speed suffered a severe knee injury on New Year s Eve right before the 2015 season. She has worked a long road back and it has paid dividends, as Speed finds herself in the team s lineup for vault and uneven bars. The Razorbacks have five incoming freshmen for the 2017 season. Michaela Burton from Illinois, Hailey Garner from Tennessee, Kirby Rathjen from Texas, Sarah Shaffer from Texas and Jessica Yamzon from Nevada. Arkansas has Makenzie Anderson and Sydney McGlone as incoming freshmen for the 2016 season. Anderson (from Minnesota) and McGlone (from Ohio) are expected to compete in multiple events.

Cook and Arkansas marked their 12-year anniversary in 2014 and celebrated the program s first NCAA Individual Champion, as Katherine Grable collected the NCAA title in both vault and floor exercise. In 2015, Cook led the Razorbacks to their 12th-consecutive NCAA Regional appearance and 10th-consecutive top-15 finish. Cook came to Arkansas in May 2001 to build the Razorback program from scratch. He was consulted on the construction of one of the top practice facilities in the nation. He selected, ordered and assembled equipment; and helped fans and Northwest Arkansas quickly accept and learn about his sport.
