18 Vanderbilt Ole Miss Postgame Notes August 29, 2013 Vanderbilt Stadium Pregame Notes Vanderbilt is in its 124th year of organized football. The Commodores wore black pants, black jerseys and black helmets for the team s Operation Blackout. Ole Miss won the toss and deferred to the second half with Vanderbilt electing to receive in the first half. Attendance was a sellout of 40,350, marking the first sellout at Vanderbilt Stadium since the Tennessee game last year and the first home opener sellout since Thursday night s season opener marked the second straight season the Commodores opened the season on a Thursday and eighth time in school history. Vanderbilt captains for the game were Walker May, Andrew East, Jordan Matthews and Wesley Johnson. Team Notes Vanderbilt is now all time against Ole Miss, including winning six of the last nine games. The Commodores are now 3 5 in Thursday night games all time and in season openers. Individual Notes Wesley Johnson started the 39 th game of his career, starting at left tackle. Johnson has started every game of his career. Redshirt freshman Adam Butler earned his first career start on the defensive line. Senior Steven Clarke, redshirt junior Vince Taylor and sophomore Darreon Herring all earned the first start of their careers. Wesley Tate plunged in from three yards out in the second quarter for his first TD of the season and 10 th rushing score of his career. Jordan Matthews 55 yard touchdown catch in the second quarter put him over 100 yards receiving for the 11 th time in his career and marked his ninth 100 yard receiving game against SEC opponents. Austyn Carta Samuels 55 yard TD strike to Matthews was the longest pass of his VU career.

19 Kyle Woestmann recorded a career high six tackles in the first half, including two sacks to match a career best, before finishing with a career best seven tackles. Stephen Weatherly made his first career sack in the second quarter, taking down Bo Wallace for a six yard loss. Jerron Seymour s three yard TD run in the second quarter capped a seven play, 80 yard drive and was Seymour s first touchdown since the 2011 AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Jonathan Krause s 66 receiving yards set a new career high. Wesley Tate s second three yard TD run of the night gave him his second two rushing TD game of his career (Presbyterian). Andre Hal had a career best with nine tackles. Austyn Carta Samuels threw for 300 yards, the most in his Vanderbilt career. Javon Marshall s nine solo tackles set a new career high. Jordan Matthews 42 yard catch in the fourth quarter gave him a career high 178 yards receiving on the night and his 10 th catch to match a career best. Steven Scheu s 34 yard TD catch in the fourth quarter was his second career TD and the longest catch of his career. Austyn Carta Samuels 300 yards passing made him the first Vanderbilt QB to throw for 300 yards in a game since 2006 when Chris Nickson threw for 446 yards against Kentucky. Vince Taylor made a career high four tackles on the night. Offensive Notes Wesley Tate scored the Dores first touchdown of the year capping a 12 play, 71 yard drive with a three yard run. Vanderbilt s first scoring drive of the season (12 plays) was the Commodores most on a scoring drive since the Auburn game (16 plays). The Commodores 21 point, second quarter explosion marked the team s fourth straight game, going back to last season, in which the team has scored 21 points in a quarter (NC State, Wake Forest, Tennessee). Vanderbilt s three scoring drives of 70 or more yards marked the first time since the Tennessee game last year the Commodores had three scoring drives of 70 or more yards. Defensive Notes Vanderbilt held Ole Miss to 21 yards rushing in the first half and 2 of 7 on third down. Special Teams Notes Taylor Hudson saw his first action as a Commodore, punting five times for an average of 40 yards.

20 Vanderbilt Football Post-game Quotes August 29, 2013 Vanderbilt Stadium Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze Opening Statement: We stole one tonight. We didn t play that well, especially defensively in the second half. We preach that you play all 60 minutes until that whistle blows at the end of the game. I ll give credit to the young guys though, we were wounded and they stepped up for us and competed. We obviously have a lot to fix and we ll go back and take a look at that. But fortunately we get to make those fixes 1-0. On Jeff Scott s 75-yard run to put Ole Miss up late: I m so happy for Jeff, he s really bought into our program. He s one of my favorite guys because he s a competitor on and off the field. All we needed at that point was a field goal. I saw what they did on the first play of the drive and I knew that we could get a good run play. He executed on the play and put us up for good. On the increase of a passing game in the second half: They started playing two high on Donte s side and carrying with the backers. I felt like we could throw a little in the area they were voiding. We started running the ball and really just got into our tempo. Our guys didn t respond to the offense in the first half like they did early in that second half. We made some adjustments at the half that paid off. I m really proud of our young guys on the line. They hadn t played any snaps and ended up playing the whole second half. On Vanderbilt s fourth down conversion to Jordan Matthews late in the fourth quarter: Everyone in the stadium knew who it was going to on that play. We had two on him but we have to clean up our technique if we are going to do that. He is a heck of a player; you got to give him credit. He gets in and out of breaks as well as anyone I ve seen, but we still need to execute and make that play. Ole Miss Linebacker #4 Denzel Nkemdiche On Vanderbilt s touchdown to Steven Scheu in the fourth quarter: We weren t lined up right. That s what happens when you don t execute and get to your position. We need to take a look at the film and fix what we did wrong. On Jeff Scotts touchdown run: Jeff s an electric player. I knew once he broke out into the open field it was a wrap and nobody would catch him. He s a big time player for us and big time players make big time plays. On the back-and-forth of the game: It was a great game, back-and-forth the whole way. Our coaches preach to us about adversity and tonight we were able to conquer that adversity and pull out a win late in the game. That was a great win for us and a great way to open the season.

It s a simple game we turned the ball over and they didn t. Early on, they dominated the line of scrimmage. We didn t get the ball to [Jordan] Matthews early in the game. It came down to turnovers, penalties and not being able to come off the field on third downs. That s on me. I m responsible for our offense, defense and special teams. If you re looking for someone to blame, blame me. On Mississippi s Go-Ahead Touchdown: It was a great call by them. We called a defense for the pass. They blocked us in space and [Jeff Scott] is fast. On Whether Coach Franklin Thought Vanderbilt Had the Game Won: The game is never won. They played for four quarters just like we played for four quarters [last year at their place]. I could name 15 plays that would have made a big difference. We had the lead, lost the lead, lost the momentum, and gave up a big play to end the game. On Vanderbilt Wide Receiver Jordan Matthews: I m very proud of him, but we need other guys to step up.
