They start blaming each other for the loss even though they were all apart of them team. You win together and lose together but the team wasn t following that motto. 2. What is the locker room conversation doing to the players self esteem? It lowers the players self esteem. By hearing all those negative comments they learned what other people think of them on the court. 3. What do you think motivates Coach Carter to take the low paying coaching job? I think what motivates him is his wife and his basketball career. He knows that the team isn t great but Coach Carter wanted to make a difference no matter how hard or long it took him too. 4. What does Coach Carter say is one way to demonstrate respect to an adult? When using these terms, which type of growth is demonstrated (physical, social, emotional, intellectual?) He said one way to show respect to an adult was by calling them Sir. Intellectual growth is demonstrated because this shows that these boys are growing up. 5. Cruz thinks that it is funny to stage an attack on several of the basketball players walking home from practice. The basketball players don t think it is funny. Compare the values of the basketball players with those of Cruz. Real basketball players actually care about what they do. Through all the tough times they still keep on trying. What does your opinion say about your values? Yes, I think the contract is fair. I think it s fair because education is one of the most important things in the world and those kids don t give a crap about it. Coach Carter made this contract this way for the players own good. He cares about them and he wants them to have a bright future. My opinion says that I value education a lot. I know that if my career job goal doesn t work out I ll have a back up because I will have a good education. 7. How does Coach Carter s son Damien demonstrate perseverance in achieving his goals? Damien demonstrate perseverance in achieving his goals by making his own decisions. He quit his old school because he wanted to make a difference on his dad s basketball

Does he succeed in raising his self esteem? What Cruz does is that he says that the team the Oilers were playing sucked. When he asks Coach Carter to come back onto the team he was given a huge challenge which is nearly impossible to complete. He demonstrates self discipline by trying to do the tough task which is given to do. 10. What value does the team show by helping Cruz do push ups and suicides? The value the team shows is team work. They help him do the pushups and suicides because they learned that if 1 member of the team suffers, they all suffer. 11. His response is that go out there and always do your best. Battle s self concept is use all your skills in your body and you ll succeed in this activity. 12. What types of problems does this create in their relationship? Kenyone and Kira aren t loyal to each other at the dance. This is because they were dancing with other people and not even caring about what the other thought. This makes both of them feel insecure about each other because when the have a baby how do they know that if one of them will bail out on the other and leave them alone with the baby. 14. The team worked hard to win the tournament. What helped them win? What do they

3 value? The one main thing that I think helped them win the tournament was teamwork. Each player used there team mates instead of being selfish and being a ball hog. Each one of the players value one another and teamwork. 15. When the players do wrong, they are required to do suicides. What stage or level of Kohlberg s Theory of Moral Development does this action indicate? Running suicides in this case is a punishment, so that means this is stage 1 of Kohlberg s Theory of Moral Development. 16. Running suicides helps you to grow. What type of growth do you experience? (physical, emotional, social, intellectual, philosophical, or chronological?) Running suicides is a physical type of growth. It makes your body go to a whole different level of pain. It pushes you and it increases your heartbeat which is a good exercise. 17. What does Coach Carter value more, winning basketball games or an education? Which do you value more and why? The main thing that Coach Carter values is showing respect to one another. The thing that I value is Respect. I hate it when one person doesn t respect another s ideas or accomplishments. 18. Because Coach Carter expects that the students do well in school, they start to study and do well. How do other people s expectations of you affect your behaviors? My expectations don t really affect my behaviour. I always try to live up to my expectations and when I do that people always think the same of me. 19. It s important to have goals in life because if you don t have goals your life will be heading in the wrong direction. Cruz knew his cousin was into illegal things like drugs but he didn t think of all the consequences. If he had set good goals he would have a good future.

4 21. How does the coach demonstrate compassion towards Cruz? Coach demonstrates compassion towards Cruz by helping him in his hard times, in this case his cousin's death. He lets Cruz into his house and lets him know that he will always be there for him. 22. Do you agree with the lock out? Why or why not? Yes, I do agree with the lockout. I agree with it because in the starting of the movie all the players signed a contract which said they had to maintain a 2.3 gpa, they had to attend all their classes, and more. They signed the contract so that means that they have to live up to what they agreed to. 23. How did the boys grow intellectually from the lock out? What was available to them in their environment to help them grow intellectually? They grow by learning that there coach is for real. They had to man up. Each one of them had each other which helped them grow intellectually. 24. Coach Carter stood up for what he believed in. What does this say about his character? What this says about his character is that he is a man of his word. He doesn t go back on what he says which is a very good trait. 25. He demonstrates Kohlberg s post conventional level of moral development by taking some young men and turning them into grown men. 26. The basketball team shows that they are loyal to Coach Carter after the school board has called off the lock out by saying that they will not play in the games until they improve their grades. 27. How has the attitude in the locker room changed from the beginning of the movie to the end of the movie? In the starting of the movie each team member was fighting with one another. At the beginning of the movie the boys were used to losing and getting mad. At the end of the movie all of the players were confident with themselves and played like men. 29. How does Coach Carter and Cruz personality types affect their ability to get along? Coach Carter is a very strict man who takes everything seriously but Cruz on the other hand is very loose person who doesn t think before he does anything. Because both of them had very different type of personalities they didn t work good together. 30. How do Kenyon and Kira s personality types affect their ability to get along? Kenyon wants to play basketball and be able to live with Kira at the same time, but Kira doesn t think it s possible for him to do both at the same time so this affects their ability to get along together. How could being a talented basketball player be an inherited trait? An environmental trait? (Give an explanation for both) It can be inherited because you might have good genetics which makes you a good player and it can be environmental because you might practice a lot which makes you a good player.
