The Tigers are led by talented big man Aaric Murray who enters the game with Texas Tech averaging 23.8 points per contest. Ray Penn is back to navigate the offense for TSU head coach Mike Davis. Penn racked up a double-double versus Wiley scoring 29 points while dishing out 11 assists. In all the Tigers currently have a total of four players averaging double-digits in scoring. 2 BLOCK MACHINE Texas Southern forward Aaric Murrayhas shown a gift for blocking opposing defenders shots. Thru two games Murray has blocked a total of 19 shot attempts ranking him first in the conference. As a team Texas Southern ranks first in the SWAC in blocks swatting on average 5.5 shots per game. DISTRIBUTING THE BALL TSU Guard Ray Penn currently leads his team in assists per contest averaging 6.7 dimes per outing. Penn also ranks first in the conference in assists. 14 CONSECUTIVE WINS Texas Southern had a 14 game winning streak that dated back to last season before losing to Miami on Nov. 14. The Tigers won their last twelve games last year as they went on to claim the SWAC regular season title. IMPACT PLAYERS Since joining the TSU basketball team guard Ray Penn has teamed with Aaric Murray and Jose Rodriguez to give Texas Southern one of the most three man scoring combinations in the country. The three players combine for 65 percent of the Tigers offensive point production (56.1 ppg). LAST WIN RECAP HOUSTON- A total of four Texas Southern players put up double digits in scoring on Monday night at the H&PE Arena as the Tigers cruised to a victory over visiting Wiley College in front of 1,042 spectators. Ray Penn led the charge going 7-of -13 for 29 points while also racking up 11 assists, 2 steals and a rebound. Penn set the tone early for Texas Southern with his precision passing and quick cuts inside the lane. Murray put together his second back-to-back solid performance as the 6-10 center scored 24 points on an 8-of-17 shooting night. Murray notched his first career triple double in a Tigers uniform as he blocked 10 shots while grabbing 10 rebounds. He was a menace inside the paint for the Wildcats throughout the contest as he rejected nearly every shot taken in his vicinity. "We did a really good job executing our system tonight," said TSU head coach Mike Davis. "Ray did a great job setting the tempo for us tonight and Aaric came up with some big time blocks and buckets when we needed it." Lawrence Johnson-Danner and Jose Rodriguez were the Tigers other two leading scores tallying 22 and 18 points respectively. Combined the two players went an efficient 14-of-21 from the floor. Johnson-Danner was lights out from three point range shooting 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. As a team Texas Southern shot 55.1 percent from the field while holding the Wildcats to 45.8 percent in regulation. Aaron Clayborn grabbed six rebounds while scoring 14 points on a 7-of-10 night from the floor. Clayborn provide TSU with much needed energy off the bench and he also converted several clutch finishes around the basket. The Tigers will now get set to take their talents to South Beach as they travel to Miami to face the University of Miami Hurricanes and Florida International on Nov. 14 th and Nov. 16 th respectively before traveling to begin participation in the Legends Classic. MURRAY NAMED SWAC POW BIRMINGHAM-The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced Aaric Murray as its SWAC men's basketball player of the week. The announcement came Tuesday afternoon. Murray averaged 28.5 points per game while collecting nearly nine rebounds per contest. Saturday against Norfolk State, his stat line was 33 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and five blocks. He went on to close out the week with a triple-double. Monday night he accounted for 24 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, one steal, and 10 blocks. The 6-10 senior is a Philadelphia, Pa. native. The Tigers basketball team is off to a 2-0 start after winning back-toback home games versus Norfolk State (95-83) and Wiley College (113-96). 6 Head Coach Mike Davis Texas Southern University announced the appointment of Mike Davis to the position of Head Men s Basketball Coach on October 27, Davis arrived to TSU after spending six seasons at the helm of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) men's basketball program. In just his first season at Texas Southern Davis led the Tigers' basketball program to a Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season championship. TSU reeled off 12 consecutive wins to conclude the season with a 16-2 mark in conference play. Davis also eclipsed the 250 career wins mark during the Tigers campaign. Under the coaching guidance of Davis Texas Southern had four players named to the All-SWAC team highlighted by senior guard Omar Strong being named the SWAC Player of the Year. Fred Sturdivant was selected as the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocked shots. Through five seasons with the Blazers, Davis owned an impressive record of (.629) overall with a mark in Conference USA play during his six years in Birmingham. Davis holds a (.608) overall career record in his 12 years as a head coach highlighted by seven 20+ win seasons. Davis also led his teams to success off the court and in the classroom, as the Blazers achieved a team GPA of 3.0 during the 2010 fall semester. Additionally, the squad also had four consecutive semesters of a perfect 1000 APR score while Davis was at the helm of the pr ogram. I m really excited for the opportunity to lead the Texas Southern men s basketball program, said Davis. Basketball has grown tremendously in the state of Texas over the past years and I m looking forward to being apart of the TSU athletic department and the local community. Davis had a highly successful season at UAB in , as he guided the Blazers to the program's first-ever Conference USA regular season title. In doing so, he was named the 2011 Conference USA Coach of the Year, while also earning NABC All-District Coach of the Year accolades. In Davis also guided the Blazers to an NCAA Tournament at-large berth with a record of 22-9 and a 12-4 mark in league play. UAB earned at least 20 victories in the regular season in four-straight years under Davis tenure ( ), marking the first time that feat had been in achieved in program history. The Blazers also won at least 11 conference games in each of those seasons. Under Davis the program clinched four consecutive postseason berths (three NITs and one NCAA Tournament). Davis subsequently etched his name in the record books as he became only the second coach in UAB history to reach 90 wins in a four-year span. The only other coach in program history to accomplish the feat was Hall of Famer Gene Bartow, who reached the pinnacle with a school record 94 from The Fayette, Ala., native arrived at UAB from Indiana University, where he served as the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from While there, he compiled a record. Davis teams played some of their best basketball during the postseason, evidenced by Davis' record in the month of March and his 7-4 NCAA Tournament mark, including a run to the NCAA Championship game in Under Davis, the Hoosiers enjoyed considerable success, including a trip to the 2002 national championship game against Maryland. Named the 25th head coach in Indiana history on Sept. 12, 2000, Davis had the most successful first season of any of his 24 predecessors. His 21 wins were four more than any other first-year IU head coach. His success was not limited to just IU, as his 21 victories ranked him second among first-year head coaches in the country in In addition to his recruiting success, he was instrumental in the development of several players including A.J. Guyton, the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player in 2000, Kirk Haston, a first-round NBA selection in 2001, and 2002 Big Ten MVP and consensus second-team All-American Jared Jeffries, who was the 11th overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. In Davis' three seasons as an IU assistant, the Hoosiers compiled a overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament all three seasons. Davis came to Indiana after a two-year stint ( ) as an assistant coach under David Hobbs at the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide basketball team posted a record and advanced to the NIT Final Four. Davis' coaching tenure with Alabama marked his return to the Crimson Tide. Davis spent his collegiate-playing career with the Tide after earning the state's Mr. Basketball honor and All-America status in He was a standout for four seasons at Alabama and finished his career in the Top 25 on the Crimson Tide's all-time scoring list with 1,211 points. In his first season, he played for the legendary C.M. Newton and then spent his final three years playing under another coaching legend, W imp Sanderson. Davis averaged 10.1 points per game for his career and ranks third all-time on the school's steals list with 165. During his four seasons at Alabama, the Crimson Tide posted an record and advanced to two NIT and two NCAA Tournaments.
