With her 260 points this season, the forward enters Saturday with 928 to her name, following a UC Davis sophomore-record 512 points in , and would be the first Aggie to reach 1,000 career points since Kasey Riecks (1,071) in If she holds true to her current scoring average (17.3 ppg), Fipps could cover the remaining points and reach the millennium mark as soon as Jan. 30 at home against Cal Poly, and inch closer to Kendall Greene ( ), who ranks No. 15 on the all-time scoring list with 1,027. BIG WEST PARTNERSHIP FEATURES AGGIES: The Big West Conference announced on Nov. 19 that the Aggies contest at Long Beach State on Feb. 20 will be one of three women s regular season games to be broadcast live on ESPN3 thanks to the league s new partnership with the network. A QUICK LOOK AT THE HIGHLANDERS: UC Riverside enters the week with a 4-11 overall record and an 0-2 mark in Big West Conference play following opening weekend losses to Cal State Fullerton (82-78) and UC Irvine (90-78)... the Highlanders have lost their last eight-in-a-row dating back to an win over Bakersfield on Dec Thursday s contest will be only the fourth home game of the season for UC Riverside, which has lost two of three at the SRC Arena in high-powered sophomore scorer Brittany Crain paces the Highlanders offense, leading the Big West at 19.6 ppg while shooting just under 51 percent from the floor and averaging 6.4 rpg... Crain is one of four Riverside players in double figures, joined by Annelise Ito (12.3 ppg), Natasha Hadley (11.3 ppg), and Simone DeCoud (10.8 ppg) -- all three of whom are shooting better than 40 percent from the floor and averaging better than five rebounds per contest... as a team, the Highlanders are averaging 69.1 ppg and shooting.422 from the field while opponents are averaging 76.7 ppg and shooting.410 from the floor... UC Riverside leads the league in field goal percentage, blocks (69, 4.60 bpg), and assists (16.73 apg) entering the week. THE SERIES: UC Davis leads the all-time series with UC Riverside, 28-19, dating back to , but is just 8-7 against the Highlanders since joining the Big West as full-fledged Division I members in the Aggies have won the last five-consecutive meetings with Riverside, sweeping the regular season series in each of the last two years and eliminating the Highlanders in the semifinals of the 2011 Big West Conference Tournament en route to the title... UC Davis is 9-10 all-time on the road against UC Riverside (with the location of two games unknown) and has won its last two trips to the Inland Empire after losing five-in-a-row from A QUICK LOOK AT THE TITANS: Cal State Fullerton enters the week with a 5-9 overall record and stand as one of two unbeatens in the league (Cal Poly at 2-0) following the opening weekend of play after a four-point win over UC Riverside... the Titans have won back-to-back games (and four of their last five) to ring in the New Year following a 1-8 start under first-year head coach Daron Park... Fullerton hosts UC Irvine on Thursday before welcoming the Aggies... junior guard Chante Miles averages 15.2 ppg (good for ninth in the league) and 4.21 apg while shooting.424 from the field... junior forward Kathleen Iwuoha is the only other player in double figures, averaging 10.6 ppg and 7.0 rpg -- the latter good for a tie for fourth in the league -- while shooting.523 from the floor... the Titans rank near the bottom of the league offensively, averaging just 59.4 ppg (ninth in the Big West) and shooting.373 from the floor (eighth), but feature one of the league s best scoring defenses, tied for the top spot with Hawaii by allowing just 65.5 ppg.

YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN: There s no place like home, and it just may feel like that this weekend when a quintet Aggies come home to Southern California for UC Davis game against Cal State Fullerton. Alyson Doherty (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro HS), Molly Greubel (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS), Kelsey Harris (Brea, Calif./Brea-Olinda HS), Celia Marfone (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills HS), and Brianna Salvatore (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS), all prepped within a 25-mile radius of Fullerton. WINDEX WOMEN: The Aggies have been dominant on the boards as of late, out-rebounding their opponents in three of the last four contests and having at least one player in double-digits on the glass in each of those four games. UC Davis is plus-20 on the boards since its Dec. 28 game against Sacramento State, including a season-high 15-rebound margin against Simpson University on Jan. 2. GOOD TO SEE YA, CELIA!: For the first time since their Dec. 7 contest at Hofstra, the Aggies were at full strength on Saturday against Long Beach State, finally welcoming Celia Marfone back to the floor after the sophomore had missed the team s previous six games due to injury. Marfone did not disappoint in her 2014 debut, either, finishing with seven points, five rebounds, and three steals, in 24 minutes off the bench, hitting 3-of-5 from the field and helping UC Davis sink Long Beach State for its first Big West win of the year. SHE S AT IT AGAIN: While her consecutive 20-point scoring games streak came to an end last week against Cal State Northridge, junior Sydnee Fipps has still found a way to get hers, averaging 19.9 ppg over her last seven contests since being held to single digits at Hofstra on Dec. 8. Fipps has reached double figures in all but two games in (the season opener against USC being the other) and has led the team in scoring in 11 of the team s 15 contests thus far. Junior Kelsey Harris (three times) and sophomore Alyson Doherty (once) stand as the only other Aggies to lead the team in scoring this season. FIPPS CLEANS UP WELL: When not putting the ball in the hoop, Fipps has been a force on the boards for UC Davis as well, cleaning the glass to the tune of 10.5 rpg (42 total) over her last four contests -- including double-digits in three of those games (Sacramento State, Simpson, and Long Beach State) en route to a team-best three double-doubles this season. TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE: With Fipps double-double against Long Beach State, the Aggies have had a player collect a double-double in each of their last four contests and six times overall this season, improving to 3-3 in such games. NOT HALF BAD: Saturday against Long Beach State marked the sixth time in 15 games this season that the Aggies have held a halftime lead, improving to 5-1 in those contests with their three-point win over the 49ers. SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT COMBINATION: With senior Idit Oryon inserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season, the Aggies went to war with the 49ers with their sixth different starting lineup of the season and their third different lineup in their last three games. 4 JAN. 14, 2014 Weekly Notes GAMES UC Davis at UC Riverside & Cal State Fullerton Page 4 JENNIFER GROSS Head Coach (UC Davis 97) 3rd Season (10th Overall at UC Davis) Overall: (2 Years) As a player, she set school records and became one of the greatest point guards to ever don an Aggie uniform. As an assistant and associate head coach, she turned UC Davis into an immediate force in the Big West Conference by implementing one of the most difficult offensive schemes in the game. In her first year as head coach, Jennifer Gross continued the tradition of excellence instilled in her throughout her entire Aggie career. Gross was named head coach of the women's basketball program in October 2010 and officially began her first year at the helm during the season. Under her tutelage, UC Davis reached the postseason for the third straight season and fourth time overall in just five years as a Div. I program. The season also saw such milestones as Kasey Riecks' 1,000th career point while Samantha Meggison and Hannah Stephens each received All-Big West Conference accolades. Gross returned to the UC Davis women's basketball program in to serve as the lead assistant for the Aggies. She was promoted to associate head coach in 2008, solidifying herself as one of the top offensive coaching minds on the west coast. As the program's offensive coordinator, she implemented a Princeton-style offense, building it from the ground up. Using the fundamentals of sharp cuts, smart passes, and an unprecedented level of teamwork, the Aggies have been able to give opponents fits with their precision and execution. In , the first official season of Division I play for UC Davis, the Aggies shot 43.5 percent from the floor, best in the Big West Conference and ranked No. 43 among all NCAA Division I teams. As the primary player development coach for the guards, Gross helped Jessica Campbell, Heather Bates and Haylee Donaghe capture all-conference honors in In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Gross has been the recruiting coordinator for the Aggies since her arrival in As a former three-year CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honoree, Gross knows what it takes both athletically and academically to succeed at UC Davis. She was instrumental in the recruitment of all-conference sophomore Paige Mintun, who led the Aggies in points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals in Gross also took the lead in bringing in the talented freshmen class of , which featured three consistent starters including Kasey Riecks and Lauren Juric. Both Riecks and Juric earned All-Big West honorable mention honors as well as All- Freshman Team accolades. Juric was also named the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year for Prior to returning to UC Davis, Gross spent two years as an assistant coach at San Diego State University ( ). In addition, Gross gained valuable experience coaching at her high school alma mater, University City High School in San Diego. After two seasons as an assistant, she took over as head coach in 2000 guiding the Centurions to a 50-9 record in two years at the helm. In her four-year career at UCHS, the team won four straight Western League titles plus a pair of CIF-San Diego Section banners. As a player from at UC Davis, Gross set school records for career assists (448), steals (300) and three-pointers (163), the first of which still stands. Additionally, she continues to rank fifth all-time at UC Davis in career scoring, compiling 1,143 points. As a senior, Gross led the Aggies to a school-record 29-3 mark and the school's first appearance at the Division II Elite Eight tournament. UC Davis finished third at the national tourney, beating Bentley in the consolation final. For her part, she won Kodak All-America honorable mention honors and was selected to the Northern California Athletic Conference first team for the second time. However, perhaps her finest achievement was her participation in 101 victories during her four-year career, the winningest span in program history. Gross graduated from UC Davis in 1997, earning her bachelor's degree in organizational studies. She earned her master's degree in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in After her collegiate career, Gross went on to play professionally in Denmark (July 1997-Apr. 98) and Israel (July-Dec. 1998). She was inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in DOHERTY DOIN WORK: Since returning to the lineup from an illness that kept her out for three weeks, sophomore Alyson Doherty has been a force inside for the Aggies, averaging 9.8 ppg while reaching double figures in each of her last three contests to go with 6.5 rpg and shooting 60 percent from the floor (18-for-30). With her 12-point, eight-rebound night against Long Beach State, Doherty has now reached double figures seven times this season. SHE S JUST ALY FROM THE BLOCK: With a career-high four blocks against Long Beach State on Saturday, Doherty upped her total to 17 blocks this season -- accounting for just over half of the Aggies 33 swats as a team and ranking her third in the Big West with 1.42 blocks per game. Doherty s four blocks against the 49ers were the most since Lauren Juric knocked down four shots against Cal Poly on March 1, The sophomore, who had 27 blocks during her rookie season, enters the week just 12 blocks shy of Sarah Allen ( ) for 10th on the UC Davis all-time list. BLOCK PARTY: The Aggies six blocks against Long Beach State tied a season high, equalling the mark set against Sacramento State on Dec. 28. The total was the highest since UC Davis knocked down eight against UC Irvine on Feb. 2, BALANCE ON THE BOARDS: Through 15 games, the Aggies have had eight different players lead them in rebounding with Fipps (five times), Kelsey Harris (twice), Alyson Doherty (twice), and Celia Marfone (twice), the only repeats on the list. Heidi Johnson is the newest member of the club after grabbing a game-high nine boards (five offensive) against Houston Baptist on Dec. 21. In all, six players have grabbed at least 40 rebounds with five of those players averaging better than four rebounds per contest. SHOOTER!: The Aggies offense has been on fire during its recent run of success, combining to shoot just under 43 percent (139-for-325) over the team s last six games, including a season-best 52 percent in a six-point loss to Sacramento State -- the best shooting night for UC Davis since the Aggies finished 30-of-50 (.600) from the floor in an win at Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 24, The 29 field goals made against Simpson on Jan. 2 were also just shy of the season high of 34 makes against San Jose State on Nov. 26. NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH: However, there are such things as free points if you hit your free throws, which the Aggies have done with regularity this season. UC Davis enters the second week of Big West Conference play atop the league with its.750 free throw percentage -- a total that also has them among the top 30 teams in the nation in that category (No. 26) as of Jan. 12. Junior Sydnee Fipps (4th -.840) and sophomore Molly Greubel (6th -.795) rank among the top-10 individuals in the Big West and headline a group that has shot 75 percent (or better) from the line in a game 11 times in 15 contests overall. MINUTES FOR EVERYBODY!: With an efficient roster of just 11 players, the Aggies have seen every eligible member of the squad play at least one minute in 13 of the team s 15 contests this season with a lineup that features six players averaging better than 22 minutes per game. SWIPER, NO SWIPING: Stealing is bad, but don t tell that to junior Brianna Salvatore, who has, clearly, been good at it this season. The Villa Park, Calif., native leads the team with 25 steals -- just seven shy of Cal State Northridge s Ashlee Guay for the league lead entering the week -- and stands 8th in the conference with 1.67 steals per game. Salvatore has at least one steal in each of the last nine contests, and 13 of 15 overall, including a career-high tying four swipes against Akron on Nov. 30. DE-FENSE (CLAP, CLAP)... DE-FENSE (CLAP, CLAP): The 46 points allowed in the Aggies 32-point win over Simpson on Jan. 2 were the fewest scored by an opponent this season and the lowest point total for a UC Davis opponent since the Aggies held UC Irvine to just 43 points in a victory on Feb. 28, POINTS TAKEN: The 95 points scored against San Jose State on Nov. 26 were a season high and the most since the Aggies finished off a win over the Spartans on Dec. 21, With its 78 points against Simpson on Jan. 2, UC Davis reached the 70-point plateau for only the 15th time in the team s last 47 games. RECYCLED NOTES STANDOUT HIGH SCHOOL QUINTET JOINS AGGIES: UC Davis head women s basketball coach Jennifer Gross announced that five high school standouts have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers with the Aggies beginning with the season. Among the group of recruits, three are California natives, one more hails from Oregon, and the final signee will join UC Davis from Canada. Morgan Bertsch (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa HS), Pele Gianotti (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS), Dani Nafekh (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Oakville Trafalgar HS), Rachel Nagel (Cerritos, Calif./Whitney HS), and Lauren Seyranian (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont HS), will join the Aggies roster beginning next season. I couldn t be more excited about the quality and character of the five student-athletes joining our Aggie family next season, Gross said. This is an extremely exciting class with talent, size, and versatility, that gives us depth at every position. Each individual provides a unique skill set on the court that will help our program compete as one of the top teams on the West Coast in the coming years. However, they also have a few things in common. In addition to being great people, who completely buy into the team culture that we pride ourselves on here at UC Davis, they are tremendous students who are highly motivated to succeed both on and off the court. For more information on the Aggies signees, the complete release is available at sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/111913aac.html.

FIPPS CAPTURES BIG WEST WEEKLY HONORS: UC Davis junior Sydnee Fipps captured Big West Conference Player of the Week honors for the period ending December 22, it was announced by the league office on Dec. 23. The Mariposa, Calif. native scored a total of 45 points in Aggie victories against Santa Clara and Houston Baptist. This is the first weekly award for a UC Davis women s basketball player since Fipps claimed such honors back on March 4 of last season. The 5-foot-10 forward scored 22 points - including 16 in the second half - in the Aggies win at Santa Clara on Wednesday. She followed that with 23 points and five rebounds in Saturday s overtime victory against Houston Baptist. Fipps was particularly effective from the line, sinking 14 of 15 free-throw attempts in the two games. She also totaled nine rebounds and six assists for the week. A FOR EFFORT: The Aggies set a school single-game record with 39 three-point attempts in their Holiday Beach Classic opener last Friday (Nov. 29) against San Francisco, eclipsing the previous mark of 36 set against Stanford on Dec. 28, Of UC Davis 20 made baskets in the game against the Dons, a season-high 15 of those went in from long-distance as the Aggies finished shooting just under 40 percent from three-point range for the night. The 15 makes from beyond the arc nearly matched the school record, falling just two shy of the mark of 17 set against Cal Poly in UPON FURTHER REVIEW: After scouring the record books it was uncovered that Fipps 17 free throws made at Pacific on Nov. 11 were a school record, breaking the previous mark of 15 set by Jackie Turpin against Cal Poly on Feb. 9, Fipps 20 attempts were just off the school record of 22, currently held by Lisa Jo Kellogg against Chico State set on Feb. 15, AGGIES PICKED SIXTH IN BIG WEST PRESEASON MEDIA POLL: UC Davis was picked to finish sixth in the race for the Big West Conference crown according to a vote of the league s media members released by the conference office on Oct. 23. The Aggies garnered 72 points to finish ahead of Cal State Fullerton (59), UC Irvine (54), and UC Riverside (38). Defending conference champion Cal Poly was the popular pick to defending its title, receiving 17 first-place votes and 177 points overall to edge out second-place Hawaii (three first-place votes, 159 points). Cal State Northridge (121 points), Long Beach State (120), and UC Santa Barbara (100), round out the top five. Fipps started all 30 games for the Aggies in , leading the team (and ranking second in the league) in scoring while pacing the team at 5.1 rebounds per game. She shot.443 from the floor,.319 from three-point range, and.817 from the line, while amassing the most points (512) by a sophomore in the history of the program. TOURNEY TESTED SCHEDULE: The Aggies will embark on yet another challenging campaign in , facing two of the sport s legendary programs in preseason No. 3 Stanford and top-ranked defending NCAA champion Connecticut, as well as nine schools overall that saw action in either the NCAA Tournament or WNIT postseason event last season. The Huskies completed their run to their eighth national championship with a finals win over Louisville while the Cardinal advanced to the third round of the tournament before falling to Georgia. Big West Conference Tournament champion Cal Poly is the third NCAA Tournament opponent on the slate for while six other opponents (Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii, Akron, Pacific, and Saint Mary s) were WNIT qualifiers. HOWARD DEAN WOULD BE PROUD: Not only are the Aggies going to Stockton, they re going to Palo Alto and San Luis Obispo and Hartford and Hempstead (New York) and Moraga and Santa Clara, in search of victories... YEAH! UC Davis will be playing eight of its first 10 contests away from the friendly confines of The Pavilion to tip-off the campaign with only regular season contests against USC (Nov. 8) and San Jose State (Nov. 26) contested in front of the hometown faithful in that stretch. The Aggies won t return home for an extended stretch until Dec. 21, beginning a season-long five-game homestand against non-conference foes Houston Baptist (Dec. 21), Sacramento State (Dec. 28), and Simpson University (Jan. 2), before opening Big West Conference competition against Cal State Northridge (Jan. 9) and Long Beach State (Jan. 11). In all, UC Davis will host just 13 of its 29 regular season contests at The Pavilion this season. BY THE NUMBERS: With seven letterwinners coming back for the season, the Aggies return 65 percent (1,177) of their points, 75 percent (753) of their rebounds, half of their assists (182), just over half of their steals (173), and two-thirds of their blocked shots (67) from a season ago.
