He scored a career-high 30 points (14-for- 17 FG) versus Cal State Monterey Bay on Dec. 18, 2017, and also had 22 points on 11-for-15 shooting and had nine rebounds in a competitive road loss at Arkansas on Nov. 17, Williams can play both forward and center positions, and has been called on this season to be more of a playmaker, while still rebounding with confidence and defending the paint. As a freshman, Williams primarily played closer to the basket as a center and averaged 7.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He also had some big games as a freshman - highlighted by an 18-point effort to help power the Dogs to a road win at San Diego State on Feb. 22, In his career, Williams has four career double-doubles, including three this season. DESHON TAYLOR EARNED ALL-MW HONORS Fresno State junior guard Deshon Taylor is simply one of the best guards in the Mountain West. Last season, he earned third-team All-MW honors from the league s head coaches and second-team All-MW honors from a MW media panel - shining down the stretch. Taylor scored at least 15 points in all 15 of his starts (Jan. 14 to March 10) and averaged 20.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game as a starter last season. This season, Fresno State hosted Oregon and competed in 2017 Cancun Challenge during nonconference play. In addition to Deshon Taylor and Jaron Hopkins, Fresno State also returns two other starters: sharp-shooting guard Jahmel Taylor and forward Bryson Williams. Jahmel Taylor is one of the nation s best 3-point shooters and Bryson Williams, a Fresno native, has an opportunity to build on a successful freshman season, which saw him lead in the team in field goal percentage ( , 60.3 percent). HOPKINS NAMED TO MW S ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM Fresno State senior guard Jaron Hopkins has established himself as one of the elite defenders in the nation for disrupting passing lanes and scoring in transition. Hopkins was named to the Mountain West s All-Defensive team by the conference s head coaches and earned third-team All-MW honors from a MW media panel. Last season, Hopkins averaged a team-best 13.2 points, while also adding 5.5 rebounds, a team-high 3.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game. The Bulldogs, who finished fourth in league play and last season, made the MW semifinals for the second straight season. Fresno State is one of two MW programs to earn a first round bye for the MW Championships in each of the last three seasons. With a strong resume, which featured eight wins over teams in the Top 100 of the NCAA s Ratings Performance Index (RPI), the Dogs earned a No. 5 seed in the Iowa Quadrant of the 2017 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Joining one of the most exclusive clubs in all of sport, former Fresno State men s basketball star Paul George ( ) debuted his first signature shoe, the PG1, on an international stage as the Indiana Pacers played the Denver Nuggets in London on Jan. 12. George became Nike Basketball s fourth active signature athlete, and the 21st basketball player to receive a signature shoe from Nike. Fresno State is wearing four versions of the PG1 shoe line this season. Blending George s smooth personality with performance attributes, the PG1 is tailored to PG13 s two-way game. The lightweight, low cut PG1 is a true collaboration between George and designer Tony Hardman. The simple, highly functional silhouette features a distinctive forefoot strap anchored by Flywire cable loops providing a dynamic, contained feel, while a forefoot Zoom Air unit delivers low-profile, responsive cushioning.
