Sophomore Lindsay Peirson was named last week s BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after netting her second game-winning goal of the year. ORANGEWOMEN STAY AT NO. 20 IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS The Orangewomen remained at No. 20 in the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll for the second-straight week. Syracuse played two games at home last week. On Sept. 25, the Orangewomen defeated Hofstra at home, 2-1. On Sept. 29, SU lost its first conference game since the end of the 2000 season (six games), falling to No. 17-ranked Boston College, 2-0, at Coyne Field. In the victory against Hofstra, SU came from behind with two second-half goals. The Hofstra Pride were 6-1 at the time and receiving votes in the national poll. Boston College is enjoying a terrific start to its season. The Eagles are 8-2 overall and 2-0 in The BIG EAST. They have the best record in the league. PEIRSON NAMED BIG EAST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Sophomore forward Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) was selected as the BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 23. It was the first league honor for Peirson. She received recognition for recording the eventual game-winning goal against Rutgers in a 2-0 Orangewomen victory. The game-winner was her second of the season as she also scored the goal in a 1-0 overtime win against Ohio State on Sept. 15. Peirson leads the Orangewomen with three goals and six points this season. MARKS NETS GAME-WINNING GOAL AGAINST HOFSTRA Senior forward/midfielder Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) scored an unassisted goal at the 58:48 mark of SU s game against Hofstra last Wednesday. It turned out to be the game-winning goal. For Marks, it was her second goal of the season and 10th of her career. Marks is tied for the team lead in scoring with six points (two goals, two assists). SHEAFFER HAS A BIG WEEK WITH A GOAL AND A DEFENSIVE SAVE Michelle Marks Junior midfielder Jackie Sheaffer (Richfield, Pa./Middleburg) tallied her second goal of the season against Hofstra. Her goal at 52:46 of the second half tied the game at 1-1. It was the third goal of her career. Against Boston College, Sheaffer was credited with her second defensive save of the season. Jackie Sheaffer LATSKO POSTS 12 SAVES ON THE WEEK Senior goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) totalled 12 saves in the two games last week. She posted four saves in the win against Hofstra, and finished with eight saves against Boston College. ARONOWICZ OUT WITH FINGER INJURY Senior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown), the BIG EAST s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, missed both games last week due to a finger injury. She is SU s third-leading scorer this season with five points (two goals, one assist). SYRACUSE ON THE ROAD UNTIL OCT. 18 The Orangewomen will take to the road now for a five-game road swing, beginning on Oct. 4, at Massachusetts. Holy Cross, Cornell, Villanova and Pennsylvania are the destinations that follow. SU will not be home again until Oct. 18, when it is scheduled to play Providence. 2
ORANGEMEN SPLIT TWO GAMES Syracuse went 1-1 last week with a 3-1 win versus Hartwick on September 25 and a 3-0 loss at Providence on September 28. SU is now 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST. The Orangemen are unbeaten in 2002 at home, winning all four contests at the SU Soccer Stadium. However, SU is just 1-4 away from Syracuse this season. Kirk Johnson JOHNSON CONTINUES ASCENT Junior forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) continued his climb up the Syracuse scoring ledger with a goal versus Hartwick. Johnson is now tied for eighth all-time at Syracuse with 25 career goals. Jamie Shannon and Jeff Knittel also scored 25 goals in their career. Johnson's goal versus the Hawks also moved him into a ninth-place tie with Eric Puls on the Orangemen's career points list. Both Puls and Johnson have 63 career points. HALL NETS FIRST OF THE SEASON Despite starting at defender for the first time this season, senior Ryan Hall (Great Falls, Va./Herndon) tallied his first goal of the 2002 campaign versus Hartwick. Hall scored on a set play off a Syracuse free kick. For the season, Hall now has four points on a goal and two assists. It was his sixth career goal. Last season, playing mostly in the midfield. Hall scored a career-best four goals. ROOKIE TALLIES FIRST GOAL Freshman midfielder Ilias Calaitzidis (Brossard, Quebec/Champlain Regional) notched the first goal of his young career versus Hartwick. The score put SU up 2-0 and proved to be the game-winning goal. Calaitzidis now has three points this season with a goal and an assist. Ryan Hall ALOISI SCORES FROM THE BACK Junior defender Chris Aloisi (North Babylon, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scored his first point since the 2000 season with an assist versus Hartwick. It was Aloisi's third career assist. He now has 11 career points on four goals and three assists. PARK PUTS THE OFFENSE IN GEAR Sophomore forward Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) is threatening to take away Kirk Johnson's two-year stranglehold atop the Orangemen's scoring list. Park has a team-high 11 points on four goals and three assists. His last point came with a helper versus Hartwick. Last season, Park finished second on the team to Johnson with 24 points on five goals and 14 assists. TWO IS ENOUGH With the 3-1 victory versus Hartwick, the Orangemen have now gone unbeaten in their last 10 games when scoring two or more goals. SU's last loss when scoring at least twice was a 3-2 overtime loss at Old Dominion on September 15, The Orangemen are in that stretch, tying Seton Hall, 2-2, on October 21, Syracuse has not lost a home game in which it has scored at least twice since a 3-2 overtime loss to Connecticut on October 31, SU is with two goals at home since the UConn loss. Junior Chris Aloisi notched his first point in two years against Hartwick. UP NEXT The Orangemen play two key BIG EAST games this week. SU hosts Villanova on Wednesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. before traveling to West Virginia on Saturday, October 5. Kickoff in Morgantown is set for 7 p.m. 3
Erica Mastrogiacomo SNAPPED SU s four-game losing streak was broken with a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Miami on Sunday. The Orangewomen averted the first five-game losing streak in program history, as well as the first three-game home losing streak with the tie. The Cuse earned its first point of the season in the BIG EAST Northeast Division with the tie. MOVING UP Sophomore Natalie Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley HS) scored the game-tying goal against Miami in the 69th minute. Galas goal was her third of the season and 10th of her career, tying her for ninth on the all-time list with Shannon Russell and Erin Parsons. Galas accomplished this in the 27th game of her career, while it took Russell 36 games, and Parsons 65 games. Also earning a spot in the SU record books was junior captain Erica Mastrogiacomo (Weymouth, Mass./Notre Dame Academy). Mastrogiacomo s assist on Galas goal was her first of the season and the seventh of her career. She is now tied with Jen Mena for 10th on the all-time assists list. WASHED OUT SU s only non-conference game of the week against head coach April Kater s alma mater, Massachusetts, was called at halftime due to dangerous playing conditions on Friday night. A steady downpour throughout the day and during the game left the playing field completely saturated and partially submerged in some areas. Neither team was able to score as the soggy ground stopped just as many shots as either goalkeeper. The game does not count towards either team's record as NCAA rules state a match must last at least 71 minutes to be deemed official. It is yet to be determined if the game will be rescheduled. PUTTING IN EXTRA TIME The Orangewomen have already played in three overtime games this season, posting a record. Historically, SU has caught its second wind in extra periods, going (.705 pct.) all-time in overtime games. The three overtime games this season is already a season record. Syracuse played in two overtime games in the 2001, 1999, 98 and 97 seasons. Sophomore Natalie Galas scored her third goal of the season to tie Sunday s game against Miami. 4
Junior Daniela Kaluskova paired with freshman Wei-Ming Leong to take the Flight B doubles title at the Maryland Invitational over the weekend. to Terrapins Emily Marker and Delila Causevic, 8-3. Meanwhile, Kaluskova and Leong advanced to the championship match and won the Flight B title. KALUSKOVA AND LEONG WIN FLIGHT B DOUBLES TITLE AT MARYLAND INVITATIONAL Junior Daniela Kaluskova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gym Budejovicka) and freshman Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia/SMJK Ave Maria Convent) were the only Orangewomen to take home any hardware from the Maryland Invitational this weekend. The pair captured the Flight B doubles title, defeating Maryland s Marta Jedrzejak and Andreaa Fusea 8-6 in the championship match. DOUBLES TEAMS MAKE GOOD SHOWING All four of SU s doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective brackets at the Maryland Invitational. The team of sophomores Kristine Bech Holte (Oslo, Norway/Fagerborg vgs.) and Trine Lise Juliussen (Rade, Norway/Treider vgs.) along with the tandem of junior Alexa Konstand (Akron, Ohio/Revere) and senior Tricia Sargent (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) were both eliminated in the quarterfinal round. Seniors Masha Kabanova (Moscow, Russia/School #528) and Shervin Saedinia (Woodland Hills, Calif./Calabasas) advanced to the championship game of the Flight A doubles bracket where they lost Kristine Bech Holte Alexa Konstand SINGLES ENTRIES BOW OUT EARLY Three of Syracuse s eight singles entries advanced to the second round of their respective flights, but that s as far as they could get. Daniela Kaluskova, Kristine Bech Holte, and Tricia Sargent all defeated their first-round opponents, but they all fell in their second match. UP NEXT... The Orangewomen travel to Brown University for a tournament this weekend, October 4-6. The powerful SU doubles teams will look to keep their momentum going heading into their third fall tournament of the year. Senior Masha Kabanova teamed with classmate Shervin Saedinia to advance to the championship game of the Flight A doubles competition at Maryland. 5
Morgan Jones SYRACUSE GOES 1-2 ON THE WEEK The Syracuse women s volleyball team went 1-2 on the week, including two losses to BIG EAST rivals St. John s and Connecticut. The Orangewomen secured a 3-1 victory against Marist on Saturday, Sept. 28. SU opened its conference play with a 3-1 loss to St. John s. The loss snapped a six-match winning streak at home in Manley Field House. On Sunday, Syracuse closed its season in Manley Field House with a 3-0 loss to Connecticut. The Orangewomen begin play at the Women s Building on Wednesday, Oct. 16. JONES CONTINUES HOT STREAK Sophomore Morgan Jones (Malad, ID/Malad) recorded 36 kills on 78 attempts with 12 errors for a.308 hitting percentage in three matches this past weekend. Jones hit in double figures in both BIG EAST matches, including a career-high 17 kills against St. John s on Friday, Sept. 27. Jones has hit in double figures in five matches in She is second on team in kills with 126 and leads the team in kills per game with SKELLY DISHES AND DIGS Junior Michaela Skelly (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) continues her versatile play for the Orangewomen, contributing as a setter and a defensive specialist. Skelly recorded her second double-double of the season against Connecticut with 24 assists and 11 digs. Skelly has amassed 325 assists on the season, placing her seventh all SU s all-time assists list with 725. She is second on the team in digs with 105 total and 2.10 per game. Michaela Skelly THE DIFFERENT COLORED JERSEY Junior co-captain Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) stands out on the court with her different colored jersey. As the team s libero, Casey wears a different color uniform than her teammates in order for the referees to distinguish her from the rest of the team. The new rule change has aided the Orangewomen in allowing Casey to spend more time on the court. Casey has recorded 186 digs in 2002, only 46 less than Christen Casey her total from last year and SU still has 15 more matches to play. She is averaging 3.51 digs per game, an increase in her 2.44 digs per game from last year. Casey needs 40 more digs to enter SU s top ten list for career digs. LOOKING AHEAD Syracuse takes to the road for the next two weeks. Next weekend, SU faces Albany, Seton Hall and Rutgers. The Orangewomen plays Albany on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Michaela Skelly recorded a double-double against Connecticut with 24 assists and 11 digs. 6
