1 Hamilto on Amateur Basketball A ssociation Strategic Plan Vision The Hamilton Amateur Basketball Association will continue to build on its proud 50 year history of strengthening and facilitating basketball in our region.

2 Basketball in Victoria is the most highly participated team sport and engages participants through all skill levels, ages and both genders. As a major sport in this country, coupled with the successes that it has enjoyed overseas with its senior and junior national teams, basketball the business is booming. The Basketball Victoria Strategic Plan was developed with the Basketball Victoria community and approved at the Basketball Victoria State Conference in November 2008, to help the State body achieve the best possible outcomes for basketball in Victoria over the next three years. The Basketball Victoria Strategic Plan sets out the strategic priorities and objectives which when implemented will see us through to the next level of our development. Achieving this plan will require the support of the entire basketball community, the federal, state and local governments and all of our commercial partners. It is together that we will achieve the ultimate success: Through collaboration and cooperation we will build and strengthen capacity to ensure basketball is the sport of first choice. As a vital member association of Basketball Victoria, the Hamilton Amateur Basketball Association has developed for its members, its own Strategic Plan. This plan outlines the direction for which it wants to strive. In short, the association outlines: Where it is now? Where it wants to be? How it is going to get there? This plan for the Hamilton Amateur Basketball Association when implemented will continue to see it as a major sporting pursuit within Hamilton and the surrounding districts.

3 History of the Hamilton Amateur Basketball Association: Hamilton Basketball Association celebrated 50 years of basketball in 2007 having grown from a few players playing in a drill hall to over 1200 players taking the court in In the early years, women were still playing netball, so the competition began with 6 men s teams. No spectators were allowed at this time as the venue was too small to allow anyone in other than the teams themselves. In 1960 the Association moved to the showgrounds where the game was played on asphalt courts and as the pavilion extended, three more courts were built. Exhibition games were played at the showgrounds including many touring American teams. In November, 1961, the Association entered a women s league for the first time. Junior basketball began for boys in 1965, followed shortly after by the girls in The Club system was introduced in 1976 with some of these Clubs still in existence today. The Association moved to its current site in 1969 with 2 courts and around 800 players saw the addition of the 3 rd court which helped bring the Under 20 Championships to Hamilton in May The fourth court was opened in March, Hamilton has been involved with State junior and senior championships winning many titles in both age groups and have had many players, coaches and referees participate in State and National events. The Association has grown from small beginnings to now be one of the largest basketball Associations in country Victoria. The Association is run by both Senior and Junior Committees and competitions are held 4 nights of the week. The Junior Committee has hosted a junior basketball tournament for the past 16 years. Players have received some excellent coaching over the years and Hamilton Basketball Association continues to produce players of a high standard: the most successful being Jan Lienert, Australian team; John Philip, NBL and Amy Lewis, WNBL
