Jim Watson has play-by-play duties, while Tammy Blackburn, who coached Cal s Becky Staubes at Scripps Ranch HS, is the color analyst. The Bears are 2-4 in TV games this year. The Bears look to snap a 14-game losing streak to Oregon and a twogame slide to Oregon State. Going on the road might not be such a bad thing for the Bears, who are 3-4 away from home and only 1-4 at Haas Pavilion. Seven of the Bears 10 non-conference games were away or neutral site games. Defense has been a consistent strong point for the Bears. In five of Cal s eight losses, it has held its opponents to 66 or less points and twice to under 60 points. Cal looks to break a trend of poor second-half performances this week. The Bears were 4-0 in games they led at the half before the start of league play. In Cal s Pac-10 opener vs. Arizona, the Bears led at the half but dropped the game, Against ASU, Cal surrendered a edge at the break, losing The Bears have been without the services of reserve center Genevieve Swedor for the past two games. Swedor, who averages 3.6 ppg and 3.2 rpg, missed the Pac-10 opening week with a separated right shoulder sustained against San Jose State. She probably will miss the Oregon trip. Different players have stepped up for Cal throughout the first 12 games, but the Bears have struggled to get at least five players playing well on the same night. Junior center Ami Forney has been Cal s leader through two Pac-10 games, averaging 17.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg. Overall, the Newark native averages career-bests of 10.8 ppg (16th Pac-10) and 8.1 rpg ( 1st Pac-10). Senior guard Courtney Johnson is Cal s overall scoring leader at 12.1 ppg but is off to a slow start in Pac-10 play at 4.5 ppg. She is third in the Pac-10 for steals at 2.6 per contest. OREGON SCOUTING REPORT A Look at Oregon (8-3 overall, 1-0 Pac-10) The two-time defending Pac-10 champion, Oregon is 8-3, 1-0 in the Pac-10 and ranked No. 20 this week by both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls. After losing three-straight games from Dec. 9-16, the Ducks have racked up four-consecutive wins. A 2001 preseason All-Pac-10 pick, senior forward/center Angelina Wolvert paces her team with 13.7 ppg and 5.5 rpg. Oregon has had success this year despite the loss of 2000 Pac-10 Player of the Year Shaquala Williams to an ACL injury before the season began. Cal-Oregon Series History Oregon leads the all-time series with Cal, 25-10, and has won the last 14 games, which ties Stanford for the longest conference winning streak against Cal. In , Cal lost in Berkeley to Oregon, 67-51, and in Eugene, Cal sophomore Amber White had a career game last year at Oregon, posting career-highs for points (11) and steals (4). Oregon Head Coach Jody Runge (Kentucky, 1993) Jody Runge is in her eighth season at the helm of the Oregon women s basketball team. She boasts a Oregon and career record. The 1999 Pac-10 Coach of the Year has led Oregon to the NCAA Tournament every year in her seven-year tenure. The Ducks are (.827) at home since the start of the Runge era in Oregon Probable Starters POS NO NAME HT YR PTS REB F 23 Lindsey Dion 5-10 Sr F 40 Angelina Wolvert 6-3 Sr C 34 Jenny Mowe 6-5 Sr G 5 Kourtney Shreve 5-7 So G 10 Jamie Craighead 5-9 Jr apg OREGON STATE SCOUTING REPORT A Look at Oregon State (8-3 overall, 0-1 Pac-10) Oregon State opened the season 6-0 but is only 2-3 over its last five games. The Beavers lead the Pac-10 in scoring defense (56.7 ppg) and three-point percentage defense (.268). Felicia Ragland leads her team with 17.2 ppg (2nd Pac-10), 6.4 rpg and a Pac-10-best 3.3 spg.

Seven non-conference road games, including one at 2000 Final Four participant Rutgers, bolstered this ranking. Also in the top 10 for strength of schedule are Stanford, which ranks first, and Oregon, which ranks sixth. No doubt, the aforementioned Pac-10 teams have helped give the conference the distinction as having the toughest overall schedule in the country. BEARS LOOK TO PROVE PROGNOSTICATORS WRONG Cal looks to show the Pac-10 coaches and media that it is better than both parties believe it is. In the pre-season coaches poll, Cal was picked to finish ninth, while the conference media slotted the Bears in the eighth spot. In , Cal finished eighth in the Pac-10 with a 6-12 mark. The Bears posted their best Pac-10 finish in 91-92, tying for third at TIRED OF CLOSE CALLS Over the last two years, 13 of Cal s 25 losses have been by 10 points or less. Three of those games were this year Fairfield (64-63), Florida International (57-51) and Santa Clara (77-73). On the flipside, eight of the Bears 15 wins over the last two years have been by 10 points or less, giving them an 8-13 mark in close games. CAL S DEFENSE IMPROVES OVER LAST FIVE SEASONS While Cal has struggled offensively at times over the last five years, the Bears scoring defense has improved each season. The season was a breakthrough year for Cal because before that point the Bears gave up at least 80 ppg for several seasons. However, they also averaged in the low to mid 70s themselves during that stretch. That offensive output the current Bears would like to emulate as the last five years their scoring average has been in the low 60s. Last year, Cal held opponents to 64.6 ppg, which ranked third in the Pac-10 and was the best by a Cal team since The Bears could top that mark this season, giving up 64.9 ppg, which ranks fifth in the Pac-10. The Bears are surprisingly only 2-2 this season when holding opponents under 60 points. Year Cal s Scoring Defense

A year ago, Cal struggled to get to the free throw line, having only 496 attempts (17.7 per game) to its opponents 671 (24.0). The season isn t even half over, and the Bears have attempted 288 free throws or 24.0 per game, and its opponents have attempted 304 (25.3). The Bears attempt average would be even higher if you take out a 3-of-5 effort against Arizona State. However, Cal is only converting on 61.8 percent of its attempts this year, compared to 66.1 percent a year ago. The Bears season-best percentage at the charity stripe this year came at SJSU at 77.7 (14-18). BEARS MUST SOLVE SECOND HALF SLUMP Before the start of the Pac-10 season, Cal was 4-0 in games it led at the half. The Bears had an auspicious start to league play by surrendering one-point leads to Arizona and Arizona State in the second half of both contests last week. Opponents have outscored Cal by 27 points in the second half ( ) and only 19 points in the first half ( ). WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES FOR FORNEY A year ago, Cal opened the Pac-10 season at the Arizona schools and something clearly seemed wrong with Ami Forney following a stellar nonconference season. While healthy for the first eight games in , she averaged 11.4 ppg and 7.2 rpg (finished the year at 6.6 ppg and 5.1 rpg). In a final non-conference trip to North Carolina and Wake Forest, evidence of a possible stress fracture in her left foot began to appear. By the end of the first Pac-10 weekend, the stress fracture was diagnosed, and Forney missed the next nine games. Forney erased all memory of a 0 point, 0 rebound performance in the Pac-10 opener at Arizona a year ago by posting a careerhigh 22 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals vs. the same Wildcats last Thursday. The Newark, Calif., native finds herself first in the league in rebounding (8.1 rpg), and second on the team in both scoring (10.8 ppg) and steals (1.7 spg) Prior to last season, former Cal coach Marianne Stanley projected that before Forney s career as a Bear was finished, she would lead the Pac-10 in rebounding. That prediction has come true so far this year. FORNEY TO GRADUATE IN 3 YEARS Ami Forney and Dennis Gates on the Cal men s basketball team will both accomplish the unique feat of graduating at the end of their junior years. Forney is expected to earn a degree in sociology in May and return for her senior season as a graduate student. NARBONNE CONNECTION SEEING MORE MINUTES Sophomore forward Amber White and freshman guard Latasha O Keith, former teammates at Narbonne High School in Harbor City, Calif., have seen their roles increase for Cal over the last four games. After averaging 15.0 mpg over the first eight games of the season, O Keith has averaged 18.5 mpg over the last four contests, including a season-high 24 minutes at San Diego State. During the similar span, White s minutes have climbed from 22.9 mpg over the first eight contests to 23.8 over the last four. The duo come from one of the most successful high school program s in the nation. That winning mentality has found them both in the lineup during the final five minutes of games as of late, as well. Against SJSU, the move to play White late paid off as she scored the final four points to win the game for Cal (66-64). O Keith and White are Cal s third and fourth-leading scorers, respectively, off the bench at 3.5 ppg and 3.3 ppg. White is Cal s top reserve on the glass (3.8 rpg) and O Keith is the top reserve for steals (0.8 spg).

After beginning the season in sixth place with 197 swipes, the Antioch, Calif., native has moved up to fourth with 228. Ahead of her are Jackie Lear ( ) with 238, Cynthia Cooke ( ) with 250 and Mazetta Garrett ( ) with 295. Johnson, a natural shooting guard who has adapted into Cal s point guard role over the last two years, led the Pac-10 with 3.2 spg as a junior. This year, she s third in the league at 2.58 spg. She also has posted the eighth (76) and ninth (74) best totals on Cal s all-time season steals ladder. Johnson, a tri-captain, has been struggling over the last four games offensively, but still leads the Bears with 12.1 ppg. FORNEY, ASHBAUGH FORM DYNAMIC BOARD DUO When Shavaki Jackson, the Pac-10 s top rebounder in , decided not to return to the Cal basketball team this year, one had to wonder who would pick up the rebounding slack for the Bears. Cal clearly has found the answer in junior center Ami Forney and senior forward Lauren Ashbaugh. Forney leads the Pac-10 with 8.1 rpg, including matching her career high of 12 rebounds vs. Santa Clara. Ashbaugh is tied for seventh at 6.5 rpg. Ashbaugh stands third in the league for defensive boards at 4.75 per game, while Forney ranks first in offensive rebounding at 3.45 per game. CORLEY CORRELATION FOR CAL WINS Senior guard Kenya Corley seems to save her best performances for Cal victories. In Cal s four victories, the Lancaster, Calif., native averages 17.0 ppg and in the seven losses she has played in, she has averaged 7.1 ppg. She missed the San Diego State loss due to an illness in her family. In Cal s win over South Alabama, Corley poured in a career-high 22 points. BEAR BITS Ami Forney is second on the team with 19 steals after tallying only 11 all of last season and 14 total in her first two years 11 of 15 Cal players have posted their career-highs for points this season Caren Horstmeyer has utilized five different starting line-ups in Cal s 12 games due to injuries and illnesses against San Jose State, freshman forward Kiki Williams saw her first action since the first exhibition game due to a stress fracture in her tibia Williams drained her first official shot attempt as a Bear a three- Ashbaugh had a career-high 4 assists vs. ASU Becky Staubes is Cal s top three-point shooter at 58.3 percent (7-of-12) after missing all three of her attempts in Kenya Corley leads Cal at the free throw line with a career-best of 71.4 percent (25-35). LAST WEEK CAL DROPS TWO PAC-10 GAMES AT HOME Arizona 79, 68 With their first Pac-10 opener at home since , Cal didn t get off to the start in conference play that it hoped for. The Bears were up at the half to Arizona but ended up dropping a decision. A edge on the glass was key to the Wildcat triumph. Ami Forney led Cal with a career-best 22 points, along with nine rebounds and three steals. Reshea Bristol paced UA with 30 points. ASU 58, Cal 47 Again, Cal got off to a strong start, leading by as many as eight points on two occasions and at the half. Things fell apart in the second half as Cal committed 17 of its 23 turnovers for the game and lost ASU held a commanding edge at the free throw line 25 attempts (17 made) to 5 attempts (3 made). Forney led the Bears again with 12 points and seven rebounds. Betsy Boardman led ASU with 14 points.
