Here 1 passes to 2 for a layup. The next group goes when the ball reaches centre. Up and back - no fumbles, no travels, no missed lay ups - 1s-3s-5s. 5 MAN WEAVES INTO 3v2 Begin with 5 players at one end of the court Pass and go behind (as in 5 man weave) the person shooting the lay-up and the person who passed the ball to shooter immediately sprint to cover the defensive basket. The closest person to the rebound takes the ball out of the basket and passes to nearest offensive person to initiate a 3 on 2 situation. At the other end of the court play continues until the two defenders secure the ball via rebound/steal or the offense scores.

19 PRACTICE SCHEDULE Session No: 5 INDIVIDUAL DEFENSIVE CONTAINMENT WORKSHOP Date: 18 th January 2012 TIME SUBJECT - DRILLS - RELATED ACTIVITIES 2:15 Warm up Foul shot/running/passing FC a) D-Trans footwork b) 5 man weave 2:25-2:40 1V 0 Drills - Lateral Jumps Lateral Jump to Slide 2:40 2:55 Lateral Jump to Slide with Counter 1V1 Drills - Gap Ball Drill 2:55 3:10 Gap Ball Drill with Dribble Alley Drill - Sequence 1 3:10 3:25 Alley Drill - Sequence 2 Alley Drill - Sequence 3 3:25 3:40 1 on 1 Single Direction from the elbow - Sequence 1 (2 goes each side) Sequence 2 (2 goes each side) 3:40 - Foul shot Warm down Stretch 3:45 Session review Revision -3v3 concept/techniques 3v3 defensive series 3v3 defense v penetration 2 nd movement principle (extra pass)

20 Session: 5 Date: 17/01 /2012 Venue: AIS - Canberra INDIVIDUAL DEFENSIVE CONTAINMENT 1V 0 Drills - Lateral Jumps (2 each side) Start on the baseline in defensive stance on the bounce, and launch yourself as far as you can placing an emphasis on pushing off of both feet whilst also landing on both feet, maintaining optimal distance between the feet. When done correctly the movement is almost completely laterally with the soles of the feet only coming a centimeter or two off the ground. Upon landing the athletes are back into defensive stance on the bounce and then repeat this process until the baseline foot is outside the 3 pt line. Elite defenders should be able to achieve this in 4 jumps. Lateral Jump to Slide (2 each side) Once again athletes start on the baseline in defensive stance on the bounce. On the coaches call of go they will focus on launching themselves laterally using a lateral jump to gain momentum and then sliding. On the coaches call of stop, they need to come to an immediate stop maintaining balance and good defensive stance. Whilst in this position they should stay on the bounce. On the coaches call of go they will repeat this process until they reach the top of the 3 point line. Lateral Jump to Slide with Counter (2 each side) Exactly the same as the 'Lateral Jump to Slide' drill, except now the coach will also call 'back' and 'forwards' as well as 'stop' and 'go'. Once again the emphasis is on lateral jumping to gain momentum prior to sliding. 1V1 Drills - Gap Ball Drill (2 goes each) The offensive player carries the ball in front of their chest. The defender must be able to reach out and touch the ball at all times. The offense will zig zag to half court also incorporating forwards, backwards and sideways movements, whilst the defense shadows these movements. There is also an emphasis on using the inside hand (right hand spearing the ball if the ball hander is moving to the defenders left) to gap the ball as this will play an important role at a later stage. The offense needs to work at a tempo that is going to help the defender get the most out of the drill. As can be seen in the diagram the court is broken up into 3 lanes. Gap Ball Drill with Dribble (2 goes each) The offensive player will now dribble the ball up the split line of their lane as shown below in the diagram. They will begin dribbling the ball on the walk. From here they can either explode with two dribbles to their right or left, then dribble the ball laterally back to the split line of their lane and repeat the process. The defender is to focus on gapping the ball, lateral jumping to gain momentum and then sliding to beat the offense to the spot they are going to, and using their inside arm as an arm bar if the offense manages to shorten the gap. Any time they use their inside arm as an arm bar they need to quickly bounce back off their player and re-establish the gap.

21 Session: 5 Date: 17/01 /2012 Venue: AIS - Canberra INDIVIDUAL DEFENSIVE CONTAINMENT Alley Drill - Sequence 1 (2 goes each) Offense is going to play without a ball. The defense is going to be holding a swiss ball at their chest. The Offenses task is to get past the D and get through the gate at the free throw line. The defense needs to use their feet to beat the Offense to the spot using lateral jumping and sliding, take a hit on the chest and re-gap the ball. The offense is to go as quick as is required to get the best out of the defense, essentially pushing them to their limit without completely beating them. Sequence 2 (2 goes each) Now the offense plays with a ball, and the defense will play without the Swiss ball. Once the Offense gets through the gate (Free throw line) the drill becomes live. The defense needs to adjust as the offense gets closer to the keyway, chesting up on the ball and making it challenging for the offense to advance within the key. The defense also has a no-jump rule when guarding the ball inside the keyway. Sequence 3 (2 goes each) Now the Offense starts back at the free throw line at the opposite end of the court. They dribble as hard as they can at the basket and look to score. The defense must stay in the back half of the centre court circle until the offense has reached the front half of the circle. From here they can choose to turn their hips and run to a spot to beat the D, slide to beat them, hedge and recover, or any other tactic that they think will work. Throughout this drill there is an emphasis that the defense is on the bounce as the offense approaches. 1 on 1 Single Direction from the elbow - Sequence 1 (2 goes each side) The offense positions themselves on the elbow. The defense lines up in front of them. The only stipulation we place on the defense is that their outside foot must be further outside that that of the Offenses. The offense is limited to go in one direction for the entire drill. They can fake as much as they like at the start, but when they go they must go. Defense focuses on lateral jumping at the start, and then putting 3 hard slides together whilst using their chest to force the ball across the court. If the defense reacts to a fake they must lateral jump back to their initial starting point maintaining optimal width with their stance the entire time. Note: The defense should be using the hash marks on the edge of the keyway as a guideline for their performance. Pushing the Offense above the top hash mark is outstanding. Above the second hash mark is still reasonably good. Pushing them above the block is ok, but an indication that we are not where we need to be. If the offense is able to turn the corner before getting to the block we are in a lot of trouble. Sequence 2 (2 goes each side) This is the same drill but now the offense can choose to keep going in the same direction or counter back the other way. The offense must take at least on dribble in the designated direction however from there they can choose to counter at whatever point they like up to a total of 3 dribbles. The defense needs to focus on squaring the initial drive off as well as any counter attempts.
