1 The Talon February 27, 2015 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 54, Number 7 BF-DC FFA Celebrates National FFA Week National FFA Week runs from February 21 through the 28 th. Many activities were planned to raise awareness about the National FFA Organization and the role it plays in the development of the agriculture industry s future leaders and the importance of agricultural education. The week-long tradition started in Each year, National FFA Week runs Saturday to Saturday, encompassing President George Washington s Feb. 22nd birthday in recognition of Washington s legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. FFA was founded by a group of young farmers in Its mission is to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. Since the founding members the organization has taught generations that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting it involves science, business and much more. Today, FFA continues to help the next generation rise up to meet new agricultural challenges by helping members develop their own unique talents and explore their interests in a broad range of career pathways. Members prepare for careers as biologists, chemists, veterinarians, engineers and entrepreneurs. The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 610,240 student members in grades seven through 12 who belong to one of 7,665 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. During FFA week the BF- DC FFA Officer Team at- tended the KECO radio show, the officers were able to promote the organization that has helped shape their lives. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The BF-DC FFA competed at the southwest district stock show in Chickasha. Landon Ringo and Jarrett Selman exhibited their show projects. Landon was named champion shorthorn market steer and Jarrett placed 1 st in his commercial heifer class and garnered the coveted super showman award. On February 23, 2015 the BF-DC FFA exhibited at the Washita County Junior Livestock show. Lilly Schneberger, Dakota Schult, Kaden Matuszewski, Landon Ringo, Jarrett Selman, Lorsa Hughes, Grace Schneberger, Jaxon Selman and Jolene Thompson exhibited their respective species at the stockshow. Grace was awarded grand champion ewe and Lilly garnered champion dorset. Kaden took home champion Suffolk ewe, while Dakota won her class. Landon Ringo swept the market steer show, being named grand champion market steer, Jarrett and Jaxon Selman were named champion of their respective breeds. Jolene s lamb earned reserve champion crossbred ewe. Lorsa s broilers placed fourth and qualified for the premium sale. Eight of the ten BF-DC exhibitors qualified for the premium sale. We are extremely proud of the play-off run both our boys and girls teams made. It is a difficult feat to reach Saturday of the regional tournament and both teams did that. They were also very close to winning both games which would have put them in the area tournament, an elite level. Great job!! With the close of basketball season the spring seasons begin. Baseball, softball, track and golf will soon be underway. Spring also means State Testing. Please work with your child s teacher in the final push toward success on these tests. Our Spring Break is March We will make up a snow day on April 6 th the Monday after Easter. Practices for tryouts are on March 2nd through March 6th and March 9th through March 12th from 3:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M in the High School Gymnasium. Anyone planning to tryout to be a Burns Flat- Dill City Cheerleader should pick up a packet in the High School office. If there are enough girls that tryout and make the squad two teams will be formed, one for Football season and one for basketball. Bailee Lake BF-DC School Libraries Extended Hours Will Rogers Library is open until 7:00 pm on Tuesdays. JH/HS Library is open until 7:00 pm on Thursdays. Student Donates to Locks of Love A u b r e y Sturgeon, a student in Mrs. Walker s Kindergarten class, had her hair cut and donated to the organization Locks of Love. Aubrey s mother said Aubrey donated 8 inches of her hair but that it takes up to ten donations to make up a single wig. Thanks Aubrey for your generous spirit. There were quite a few students, they spread across the gym and back during Eagle Time. BF-DC is very proud of all of their students but they are especially proud of how hard these students have worked to be able to get A's for the entire first semester. Will Rogers Elementary students that attended Clinton Area Wrestling meet February 8th. Will Rogers Elementary students attended a very fun and educational martial arts demonstration and lesson. The lesson was to help support No Bullying in the school. The students were all very attentive and enjoyed the activity. Jump Rope for Heart The 3rd and 4th grade Will Rogers Elementary students had a Jump Rope for Heart Performance at the Burns Flat-Dill City versus Carnegie Junior and High School basketball games February 2nd. The Students showed off their jump roping skills. The students put on this performance to raise money for the American Heart Foundations. They raised close to $ during the month of February by receiving donations from friends and family members. Will Rogers Mileage Club Will Rogers Elementary School received a grant for their school several years ago and built a large walking track near their playground. All elementary students start their recess by walking around the track a few times but some students are walking more 5th Graders Attend STARBASE Will Rogers 5th grade classes have been attending STARBASE for the past six weeks. STARBASE is an Aeronautical STEM class which involves Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology. The students use their engineering skills to build their own space modules and rockets. This year the students also got to experiment with NANO technology. STARBASE is located adjacent to the Western Technology Center in Burns Flat, Oklahoma. The graduation ceremony for STARBASE was at the last day of STARBASE. STARBASE picked two students from each STAR- BASE class to be nominated for their STARBASE Achievement Award. The Western Technology Center will be having a recognition dinner on March 26 for all the nominees. Two students will be selected to be the winners from all the schools in the area. The students from Will Rogers Elementary school that were chosen are Josh Mooney and Daniel Tavis from Mrs. McBee s class. Jacob Flores and Karla McConnell were picked from Mr. Jacobsen s class. than others. Morgan Dixon and McKinsey Dougherty have walked 50 miles each; Armando Nieves and Kaylee Miller have both walked 25 miles each, this year. Good job students. 2A Has Thunder Readers Four students in Mrs. Howes class, at Will Rogers Elementary school participated in the January Thunder Reading Challenge. Kimberlynn McAnally had 1,531 minutes of reading. Haylee Davis had 601 minutes of reading, Shane Leftwich had 504 minutes of reading, and Jayden Kamphaus had 381 minutes of reading time. Mrs. Howes is super proud of all her students and their eagerness to read.

4 February 27, 2015 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 54, Number 7 Sophomore News Burns Flat- Dill City sophomores in English II are currently learning about symbolism and the different ways to identify symbols and their potential meanings. In Algebra II the sophomores have completed their lesson on Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences and Series. Those who are taking Geometry are studying the surface area of cylinders. All sophomores are preparing for the Benchmark tests approaching within the next few weeks. Alli Walker Seniors Reading Macbeth The seniors just finished reading Macbeth by William Shakespeare in Mrs. Lyles s English class. Kensey Garrison won an award at the Academic Team Banquet on February 7 th for being the Academic Team s MVP. Within the next two weeks the senior English class will begin reading A Modest Proposal. March 26 th Blood drive in the library. Please sign up with a Stu-Co representative or Ms. Smith. March 26 th - SWOSU Scholastic meet for students March 31 st There will be an Academic Banquet at 6:30 P.M. Ms. Smith will be selling tickets in the near future. The tickets will need to be purchased before attending the banquet. No tickets will be sold at the door. Seniors need to check/remind themselves to check Facebook daily for scholarship information. Bryan Cormier Freshman News The freshman class just finished working on measures of central tendency including mean, medium, and mode. Next they will be reviewing for their algebra 1 benchmark test. In history they are studying the Indian Removal Act, and in civics they are studying the separation of church and state and the right to bear arms. In science they are learning how to name ionic and covalent compounds. Raven Horn Juniors are Planning a Great Prom The junior class is planning a great prom and finalizing the details of the event. Some juniors are even staying after school to help. The juniors have decorations ordered which should arrive at the beginning of March. In Geometry, juniors are studying area of 3D figures and Trigonometry they are going over complex number equations and absolute values. In English, juniors are continuing their work on literary packets. For American History juniors finished their study of the Cold War. Most classes the juniors are taking are preparing for the EOI. Bryan Cormier Spanish Club Plans Trip The Burns Flat-Dill City Spanish Club is finished with fundraising. All of the profit earned from the Spanish Club s Boo Bag and Beso -Gram fundraisers are going toward the cost of the Spanish Club s trip on May 8 th. The trip will be held in Dallas, Texas where the BF-DC Spanish Club will enjoy dinner and a show at Medieval Times. Alli Walker Counselor Corner 8th Grade News The Eight graders at BF-DC just finished a chapter on Magma Formation in their Science classes. In math they have been working on geometry and now are going on to studying Data Analysis. In English class they have been reviewing for the Writing test which they took on February 26, In history they are learning about what happened prior to the Civil War. In Art they are making bowls out of magazines. 7th Grade News The Seventh graders at BF- DC junior high have been learning interesting things in their classes. In English class they are writing paragraphs about objects. In math they are learning about geometry. They are learning about cells in their science classes. In geography they are learning about Three Gorges Dam which is located in China. They are learning Spanish in communications. Academic Team - BFDC II. BF-DC Academic Teams Have a Fantastic Year The Mid-Level Academic Teams are still going strong. The 6 th grade team will be representing Burns Flat-Dill City schools in the Area meet on Monday, March 2, at Central High School. Good luck team, everyone at BF-DC Schools is proud of you. The 6 th, 7 th and 8 th graders are starting their scholastic meets now that the buzzer bowls are coming to an end. The first meet will be held on Tuesday, March 3 at Clinton Middle School. The team will be leaving the school at 3:00 pm. The meets the students will be attending are written meets, where a student competes with other students of their own grade level in one of the six subjects. Those subjects are: Current events, Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, Humanities and Science. Any student that places at one of these meets will qualify to compete in the state level meet in April. The state level meet is called the tournament of Champions and is held at Redlands Community College in El Reno. The teams have had a fantastic year in Academics. The High School competed all the way to the state level competitions and the 7 th and 8 th grade team and the 6 th grade team all advanced to Area. BF-DC Schools have some extremely gifted students and the Academic Teams are just the right venue to demonstrate those gifts. Bailee Lake Page 4 6th Grade News The sixth graders at BF-DC junior high are learning about one of the United States neighboring countries Canada in their social studies classes. In Science they are going over geological formations. The 6 th graders are learning about nouns, which are person, place, and thing In English. They are doing a cereal box book report in Reading. In Math they are learning how to multiply and divide fractions. Vocal Members Attend Contest The BF-DC vocal members went to contest on February 14th for vocal competition. Receiving superior rating was the high school trio, Breanne Leftwich, Kensey Garrison, and Wally Powers. The high school ensemble consisted of Breanne Leftwich, Cheyenne Leftwich, Minnie Restivo, Tracie Diggs, Kensey Garrison, Marcie Diggs, Sierra Jacobs, and Colleen Bennett. Junior high ensemble consists of Sadie McConnell, Marcie Diggs, Janelle Beason, and Paris Henry. The superior rating for high school allows them to qualify for state competition. A solo was also performed by Marcie Diggs. Two band members competed in solo competition on February 21. Donovan Webb scored superior rating on his solo and Landry Norris received an excellent rating on her flute solo. Raven Horn StuCo News The StuCo members have been selling jean passes to Teachers for $10. This is a benefit to the Teachers and the Students because it allows the Teachers to wear jeans to work, and it helps the Student Council with items for dances, travel to the state convention, and the academic banquet. 6 February 27, 2015 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 54, Number 7 Page 6 HS Girls Basketball Ends Season with Narrow Loss The Burns Flat Dill City High School girl s basketball team started playoffs at Thomas on Friday February 13 th. The girls played Binger-Oney their first game, they won 40 to 35. The girls were ahead 27 to 15 at half time. Lilly Schneberger had 18 points, 17 rebounds, and 1 steal. Katie Birdwell had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal. Kaitlyn Utt had 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 steals. Jordan Hughes had 5 points and 4 rebounds. The team as a whole had 36 rebounds. Round two of districts the girls played Thomas at Thomas on February 14 th. They lost 36 to 63. Lilly Schneberger was 100% in shooting with 10 points. Kaitlyn Utt had 9 points, 2 rebounds, and 5 steals. Jordan Hughes had 4 points and 3 rebounds. Raven Girls Compete In Indoor Track and Caitlin Johnson went to the Chisolm Event Center in Edmond, Oklahoma on February 14 th to compete in their first indoor track meet. The girls did very well considering they had never run on a slanted wood floor before. Darian ran the two mile run and received 6 th place in the small school division. Caitlin competed in the 55 meter dash and the 400 meter dash. HS Boys Basketball Finishes Season at Regionals The Burns Flat Dill City High School boy s basketball team had a good season with a 11 wins and 16 loses. Coach Steffes said, This is the best season the boys have had since the season. The boys played Hollis January 27th and lost 52 to 65. Cameron Carter scored 13 points and Max Blankenship scored 14 points. On January 30th the boys played Cordell and won 51 to 49 Cameron Carter was the lead scorer and had 17 points and Trayon Hill was next with 9 points. February 2nd the boys played the 17th ranked team, Carnegie, and sadly lost 47 to 49. Cameron Carter had an amazing game scoring 28 points and Chris Clark was second top scorer that game with 11 points. February 5th the boys played Snyder, Horn had 3 points and 3 rebounds. Katie Birdwell had 3 points and 1 steal. Shaydie Villegas had 2 points and 1 rebound. The team advanced to regionals playing Geronimo their first game on Thursday February 19 th at the Burns Flat-Dill City gym. They beat Geronimo 41 to 34, at halftime BF-DC was ahead 18 to 9. Kaitlyn Utt had 10 points. Aubrey Mendez had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Lilly Schneberger had 4 points and 7 rebounds. Jordan Hughes had 4 points and 5 rebounds. Shaydie Villegas had 2 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal. During the second round of regionals the girls beat Verden 60 to 27. Katie Birdwell was the top scorer with 18 points. Kaitlyn Utt made 3 three-point shots and ranked number 7, and lost 57 to 65 in double over time. Cameron Carter had 18 points with Tanner Renken not far behind having 15 points. February 6th the boys played another ranked team, Merritt, who was ranked number 12. They lost 44 to 51, Cameron Carter had 31 points and Tony Dorman had 5 points. February 10th they played Cheyenne and won 68 to 50 for a great homecoming game. Cameron Carter had 23 points and Daniel Battles had 12 points. February 13rh the boys started districts at Thomas, they beat Binger 47 points to 29 points. Max Blankenship scored 11 points and Cameron Carter scored 10 points. February 14th they played in the second round of districts and lost to Thomas 48 to 65. Cameron scored a total of 13 points. Aubrey Mendez had 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal. Lilly Schneberger had 5 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 steals. Jordan Hughes had 5 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. Shaydie Villegas had 4 points and 4 rebounds. The girls ended their season with a 42 to 50 loss against Cyril. Katie Birdwell was the lead scorer with 14 points on the board. Kaitlyn Utt had 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 steals. Aubrey Mendez had 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Jordan Hughes had 6 points and 1 rebound. Lilly Schneberger had 5 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 steal. This game was very rough the BF-DC girls finished with 21 fouls as a team. Carter was the lead scorer with 12 points and Tony Dorman was second with 11 points. The boys advanced to regionals and continued to do very well. They played Alex on February 19th and won a very hard fought close game 40 to 37. Cameron Carter had 13 points and Trayon Hill had 6 points. February 20 they played Ryan and won 60 to 44 Cameron Carter had 26 points and Trayon Hill had 9 points. The final round of regionals the boys played Hydro-Eakly and had a tough game sadly losing 57 to 58. The boys were one game away from state and this was the furthest they made it in playoffs in over 15 years. January 26th the boys lost to Hollis 35 to 51l. The lead scorer of the game was Zack Glass with 12 points; Jake Mooney was not far behind with 10 points. On January 29th they played Cordell and lost 20 to 47. Zack Glass had 6 points and Donavan Webb had 5 points. February 2nd the boys lost to Carnegie 10 to 37. Cobie Villegas had 4 points. February 5th the boys played Snyder and lost 19 to 29. Zack Glass had 8 points and Jake Mooney also had 8 points. February 9th they beat Sentinel. JH Girls Basketball Finishes Season With Win Over Hobart The Burns Flat-Dill City Junior High girl s basketball team won 50% of their games after Christmas. They played Hollis January 26 th and lost 22 to 38. January 29 th they played Cordell and lost 17 to 28. Brooklyne Hargis had 4 points and 4 rebounds, Jordan Weese had 7 points and 1 rebound. February 2 nd they beat Carnegie 26 to 16. Jordan Weese had 6 points and 2 rebounds. February 5 th the girls beat Snyder 29 to 26. Makia Maxey had 7 points and 4 rebounds, Jordan Weese had 6 points and 6 rebounds. February 9 th they lost 20 to 29 to Sentinel. Makia Maxey had 8 points and 6 rebounds, Jordan Weese 6 points and 9 rebounds. February 12 th they finished their season with a terrific win over Hobart with a score of 34 to 27. Jordan Weese had 8 points. 5th & 6th Basketball Teams Work Hard and Finish Season The 5th and 6th grade basketball teams played their last games of the year against Sayre on February 3rd. The girls teams and the 6th grade boys lost but the 5th grade boys team was victorious. The 5th grade girls lost 12 points to 20 points after a hard fought game. Kailey McCarty cored 8 points and Navaeh Barnes scored 4 points. The 6th grade girls lost their game by 8 points with a score of BF-DC 13 and Sayre 21. Grace Schneberger scored 9 points and Melody Julian and Abby Sharp both scored 2 points. The 5th grade boys won their game 12 points to 7 points. Darius Glass was the top scorer with 5 points. Jacob Flores scored 4 points, Josh Mooney scored 2 points, and Brock Hensley scored 1 point. Great job guys! The 6th grade boys team lost 11 points to 28 points. Kamren Hill scored 4 points, Johnathan Wheeler scored 4 points, and Dakota Stegeman scored 3 points. All of the players worked hard and deserve a hearty round of applause for their efforts.
