NC State s Jennifer Valby is tied for No. 20 on vault. Thoughts From Thompson... On the upcoming meet... Last year, we lost to NC State at the NC Regional. Of course, we were a team that was decimated by injuries. We ended up tied in the final national rankings. They are a team that is very similar to us. They have not scored as high as we have this year, but depending on where you go and what the judges are like, it s hard to compare scores from site-to-site. If you look at the two teams right now, we are ranked 16 and NC State is ranked 27. On vault, we are 13 and they are 20. Bars, we are 22 and they are 16. Neither team is ranked on beam, and on floor we are 18, they are 19. On two of the four events they are ranked higher than we are. It should be exciting. It is going to be a four-ring circus, which is good for our girls. The first few weeks we have gone back-and-forth and all of the focus has been on that one individual. They feel a lot of pressure when they know everyone is watching them. This weekend with everything rolling at the same time, we don t have to wait for judges on other events. We can just go, you put up the score and the next kid is ready to go. It s very similar to what we do in the gym for our intra-squad. We start on balance beam which is great. The ladies have known all week that s where we would start so they are prepared. I really think we will get off to a good start and roll all the way around. On the Tigers loss to Florida We were like the good news-bad news bears Friday night. We got off to a great start on vault. Claire Seiffert led off the Alabama meet with a fall, and that was our only fall. We had been teasing her all week that sometimes even a blind squirrel finds a nut. So, she had a terrible warm-up versus Florida, but for some reason I just felt good about her that night. She led us off and did the best vault she has done in three years. We were excited. The crowd was excited. We really got on a roll. They did a great job on vault. We get on uneven bars and Kayla Gies, a senior who has not fallen on bars since she has been here, misses her release move. You kind of get that Kentucky-look on everyone s face like, uh-oh, what s going on? She fell on something she never misses. Because we have talked about recovering after falls, the next five girls got up there and hit their bar routines and were great. So, after two events, we are actually beating the No. 1 team in the country. That may have been a bad thing for us. Our team wasn t really prepared to be winning. We went to balance beam, which is our best event. We almost always go 49.0, plus, on that event, and they just looked like they were trying not to fall instead of just doing their routines. We really thought we had given the meet away. I didn t know that Florida had fallen on floor, so we went into the last event down only five one-hundreds of a point. I had really hoped that the same mistakes that they made in that situation against Alabama, they would have learned from and would have paid off for us in that situation. Unfortunately, the same thing happened. We stumbled around on a couple of passes and we ended up losing by five-tenths of a point. Great thing that we were within five-tenths of the No. 1 team in the country, but also very frustrating that we could have easily come away with the win. Freshman Katie Hurley has been successful on all of her events in three meets. Lindsey Puckett did great on three events, but she had a fall on balance beam. A.J. Mills did great on her first three events, but touched her hands to the floor on her first tumbling pass of floor exercise. There wasn t anyone who performed super well on all four events. We didn t count a fall which was great, but it was kind of a lack-luster performance really. We are looking to rebound this week because we have had a couple of extra days of practice and the ladies look really good. Hopefully we can come back with three wins this weekend. On being in position to defeat the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the country We knew before the season started that this team could be that good. We knew that it was going to depend on four gymnasts, basically. Julie Dwyer, A.J. Mills,

3 Lindsey Puckett and Krissy Voss. They all four compete all four events, so that s four of our five scores. If those four gymnasts are on, then we can hang with anybody. If any one of them has a mistake and we have to count their mistake, then we are not going to do as well. Lindsey had the mistake on beam, A.J. had the mistake on floor. Julie, we are going to change her floor routine a bit because she has struggled with that very difficult first pass. We are going to go back to her old routine. Krissy struggled on Friday night also. We didn t have to count any of their mistakes, but when they usually put up a 9.90, and now they are putting up a 9.65, that doesn t add up as fast. They are learning. They have never been in the role of expecting to win against those teams. It s always been such a great difference between them and us, it s just go out there and perform because they already knew that Alabama was going to win. Now that it s close, we need to learn how to know what the score is, and how to finish a meet. Who s Back The Tigers return nine letterwinners from 2007, including two-time All- American Julie Dwyer. The Tigers have been looking to seniors Dwyer, Kayla Gies, Aimee Goheen and Karmen Pinckney to lead the team both on and off the floor. Versus No. 1 Florida, Dwyer took second place in the all-around competition with an all-around score of Gies competed in three events, vault (9.725), bars (8.850) and beam (9.700). Goheen exhibitioned bars at Kentucky. Pinckney, unfortunately, suffered a season ending injury in winter practice and has led the team from the sidelines. Auburn s junior class features A.J. Mills, Lindsey Puckett and Claire Seiffert. Mills and Puckett are two of Auburn s top all-arounders. Puckett, a one-time NC qualifier, has been the leading Tiger so far this season, winning the all-around title with a score of at Kentucky and scoring the highest in the all-around for the Tigers versus Alabama. Puckett tied for first place on vault (9.900) and floor (9.850) versus Florida. Mills competed every event in 2008 until she endured a hand injury that kept her out of the SEC Championship. Mills won the bars competition verus Florida with a score. Seiffert is an important element in Auburn s vault and floor line-ups. After a disappointing fall on vault against Alabama, Seiffert came back to score a to start off the Florida meet for Auburn. She also scored the second highest for the Tigers on floor (9.775). The sophomore class features Krissy Voss and Carmen Nelms. Voss was a top competitor on vault, bars and beam last season, but has been a key element in the allaround in Voss scored a career high on vault and bars verus Alabama. Nelms, who suffered an ankle injury in 2007, has competed on bars in all three meets this season. Nelms improved to a from a on bars in Auburn s first two contests. She scored a against Florida. The Newcomers Five new gymnasts joined the Tigers in Freshmen Lauren Brzostowski, Katie Hurley, Rachel Inniss, Leah Vining and Shannon Walpole look to make contributions in Auburn s line-up. Hurley and Walpole debuted in AU s lineup versus Kentucky to high remarks. Shannon was the only bar routine that looked exactly like it does in practice, said AU head coach Jeff Thompson. Walpole had the third highest bar score of the Tigers. Hurley has competed both beam and floor exercise in all three Auburn meets. She held the top Tiger score on beam verus Florida. Inniss is expected to make a contribution on floor this season, while Vining and Brzostowski are expected to compete bars. Brzostowski and Inniss have also been working on beam routines Review Auburn started the 2007 season in sunny Mexico for the Cancun Classic, facing No. 13 Iowa State, BYU and No. 18 Missouri. The Tigers took a victory over BYU and Missouri, but were unable to top the Cyclones. Julie Dwyer took first place in the all-around with a score of , as well as first on beam with a Kayla Gies tied for second on vault with a 9.875, her best vault of the year. In addition to Dwyer, Auburn had two other gymnasts to finish in the top four of the all-around. Krissy Voss and Lindsey Puckett finished third and fourth, respectively. The Tigers returned to the states to open their home schedule with a win over NC State, where Auburn swept all the first place spots. Puckett placed first on vault with a score of She tied for first with teammate A.J. Mills on bars, each scoring Mills also took first on floor notching a Dwyer earned the top spot on beam with a It was Dwyer who would take the crown for the all-around competition, scoring Auburn returned to Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum a week later to sweep No. 25 Kentucky in every event.
