2 Player Comparison vs. Leading up to the 2013 All-Star break, of the Portland Trailblazers has participated in 15 SportVU tracked games while of the Golden State Warriors has appeared in 36. Each player is considered an above average interior player in the Western Conference and both have proven to be extremely efficient from various zones on the court. SportVU enables front office personnel and coaches to evaluate the touch efficiency (elbow and post), rebounding success and defensive play for these two forwards. Elbow Efficiency ranks 6th in the league in elbow touches per game at 7.9, while averages 4.8 elbow touches, which is good for 24th overall. Lee has been much more aggressive on his elbow touches, shooting just under 39% of the time he touches the ball at a very effective 47% from the field. LaMarcus has been more of a facilitator from that position on the court, and his team s points per possession is significantly lower than the Warriors 1.30 points per possession. ELBOW EFFICIENCY ELBOW EFFICIENCY %.47 ELBOW TOUCHES PER GAME % OF TOUCHES ELBOW POINTS PER TOUCH % TEAM POINTS PER POSSESSION.97 47% 39% FG % SHOT % 37% 32%
3 A post touch is defined as any player touch originating from a pass within 12 feet of the basket. You would expect this to be a very efficient location on the court and each of these players rank in the top 12 in the league in points per possession. The league wide average produces 1.26 points per possession on post touches. Aldridge has been a little more active, recording about a half a touch extra per game from the post location with a field goal percentage just under 70%. Lee has proven to be a much more efficient shooter and passer from the post, while also drawing a considerable amount of more fouls when he is fed inside. Just under 20% of his post touches resulting in a foul; Lee is attacking the basket and putting pressure on the opposing defense. The Warriors are averaging a remarkable 1.50 points per possession when Lee receives a post touch, thanks to his ability to finish and get to the line. 3.3 POST TOUCHES PER GAME % % OF TOUCHES POST 5.8% 1.09 POINTS PER TOUCH TEAM POINTS PER POSSESSION % FG % 68% 55% SHOT % 70% 7% ASSIST % 0% 5% TURNOVER % 2% 18% FOUL % 7%
4 Year after year, appears among the league leaders in rebounds per game and the campaign is no different. In all games, Lee averages 2 more boards per game at 10.8 compared to Aldridge s 8.8. When taking a deeper look in SportVU tracked games, Lee s advantage shrinks to 1.7 rebounds per game. SportVU also allows us to track a player s activity level and identify how often a player is within 3.5 feet of the ball at a time of a rebound. From this we are able to derive their conversion rate of rebounds out of rebound chances, known as rebound %. While is the more active player, by a significant margin (4.6 rebounds per game), Aldridge is actually a more efficient player in securing the rebounds, obtaining 65.3% of his rebound chances compared to 58.4% of Lee s chances. While Lee s conversion percentage is lower, he is still producing 2 rebounds per game more for his team than Aldridge. 54.4% REBOUND % 65.3% 19.2 REB CHANCES PER GAME REB PER GAME % OFF REB % 58.9% 63.0% DEF REB % 67.5%
5 DEFENSIVELY As the primary defender on shot attempts, is allowing 1.04 points per field goal attempt while is slightly better at Remarkably each one of these players is the primary defender on 21% of the possessions while they are on the floor. Neither of these players is considered an elite shot blocker, Lee is only averaging.28 blocks per game and the Warriors retain only 60% of those blocks. Aldridge on the other hand almost triples Lee s block rate at.73 blocks per game and the Blazers are retaining 91% of his blocks. OVERVIEW This is just a highlighted sample of how teams are now beginning to use the data derived from the SportVU Tracking System, to not only evaluate their players and the decisions they make but also a way to prepare advanced scouting reports and grade their own roster from game-to-game. This data only begins to scratch the surface of the potential SportVU presents; however it does highlight the various ways a player can be evaluated. Player tendencies, strengths and weaknesses are vital to roster construction, and SportVU plays a major role in aiding these decisions.
