1 ACROSS MY DESK Red Onion Creative Ballarat FNL Operations Manager Scott Carey Community Umpire Round This weekend is Community Umpire Round across Country Victoria as all Leagues prepare to show support for the numerous Umpiring Associations that service our games. Our competition is fortunate enough to be serviced by two high class professional Umpiring Association who I am proud to say we have an excellent working relationship with that is built on mutual respect. We all know the saying, We can t play the game without Umpires. Well, it s true, we can t. The Ballarat FNL is extremely proud of the approach our clubs take in communicating with both Umpiring Associations on a weekly basis. The respect shown by BFNL is a great example set for the broader community and one we are continually building on. The introduction of initiatives such as the taping of games and offering of products such as Footy Tech has made the way clubs can communicate with Umpiring Associations much easier. Our game is one of the fastest in the rule with some of the most complex rules a game has seen which makes it difficult to Umpire at the best of times. So if you re at the footy this weekend, keep in mind the support our Umpiring Associations require in order to keep Umpires in the game, do your bit and keep it positive because our Umpiring Associations need support from everyone WorkSafe Country Championships All Ballarat Football Netball League Interleague sides started their campaigns last week with excellent attendance at all training sessions. This year s task will be a particularly hard one as we tackle the Western Region Football League who have joined the Championships for the first time this year. There is a bit of an unknown between both leagues which should provide some exciting football and I m sure each of our sides are quietly confident of securing victory. If you happen to be in or near Footscray next weekend, make sure you pop into the Whitten Oval to support the Ballarat Football Netball League. This year s match will take place on Saturday 21st May with the following format to take place: FOOTBALL: Seniors 2:30pm / U/19 11:45am McDonald s Goal & Mark of the Year It s back for another year! The McDonald s Goal & Mark of the Year is up for grabs again in 2016 and four rounds in, we ve already received a high number of nominations for both awards. Despite a few wet weekends, players are still managing to showcase their skills and provide highlights that are available via aflgoldfields.tv. Keep an eye on our website for future updates on weekly highlights, the latest news and events and live scores as they happen. Good luck to all, and enjoy your day at the Ballarat FNL! 3 AT THE BAR with Theo & Digger Once again for the 2016 season, local footy fans Theo and Digger return to give their views and opinions on BFL footy each week, from the comfort of the Sports Bar at the Ballarat Leagues Club! Theo: Well Dig, a fair weekend of footy last weekend mate blowouts, comebacks, returns, debuts it had it all! Digger: You re not wrong there my son, three results 90 points or over, then two under a couple of goals. T: What was the thing that stood out most for you from last weekend? D: There were two main ones for me Damien Cupido getting sacked from his metro coaching job about the time we were putting our thoughts together for this column last week and signing with Bacchus Marsh about five minutes later, then coming out on Saturday and putting ten goals on the board against Melton South on the weekend; and Nathan Horbury realizing that if he wanted to play footy again in 2016, he d need to swallow his pride and head back to Redan. T: The Horbury one interests me what do you think brought him back? D: Seems to me the only reason he wanted to go in the first place was because of his girlfriend, so maybe he stopped getting led around by his old fella and just went back home? T: Sheesh, pulled no punches there mate. D: Just calling it as I see it, I m not entering a popularity contest anytime soon. T: Fair enough mate I just don t want people barging into the Sports Bar looking to lynch you and grabbing me instead. D: You ll be fine mate, you re so slippery that you ll just slide past them T: You re upset today aren t you obviously Richmond s woes are taking their toll on you. D: Don t mention the war mate, not if you want to walk out of here still in charge of your major faculties. T: On that note, let s change topic I was going to mention that this is Community Umpiring Round, but instead let s talk about this week s games with the muck you have on your liver at the moment, I fear any questioning about the men in orange could set off a rant that may see us shut down for good. Bacchus Marsh take on Ballarat at Maddingley Park this weekend, how do you see it panning out. D: Not well for the Swans, who have reverted back to their true form over the past couple of weeks after playing out of their skins in the early rounds. Don t think Cupido will have it as easy as he did last week, but having him up forward alongside Richo certainly means that opposition backmen are going to have to put some time in on the Cobras forwards going forward. Cobras easily. T: Redan take on Darley at the City Oval in what should be a corker of a game. D: Not wrong there for all the doom and gloom surrounding Darley, they ve been beaten by a few pretty good sides this year, and weren t far away against Lakers last week. Redan at home will be tough though, especially with the good Horbury back in the side and the bald bloke that looks like you booting goals up forward T: I think that s a compliment. D: although it s a pretty important game for Darley given that the blokes on the Footy Show pointed out that they have a tough run and could be 1-5 if they re not on song. Going with the Devils, especially if Redan run out of gas like they did against East Point last weekend. T: Speaking of East Point, they travel down to Macpherson Park to face Melton this weekend. D: Which East Point will come out to play, the one that flogged Bacchus Marsh last week then stormed home to hit the front in the final quarter against Redan last Saturday, or the one that crapped the bed against Ballarat a couple of weeks back and didn t fire a shot early against Redan? There s no love lost between these two teams, especially from the East Point end who were upset by some comments made after their game last year, so watch out for the Roos but Melton know that they ve got a tough stretch coming, and I reckon that they can get the choccies here to kick-start a run towards a long-awaited finals berth. T: Lake Wendouree v North Ballarat City in a battle of the last two undefeated sides in the league is this Match of the Round? D: Of course it is you idiot, what kind of question is that? We all expected the Lakers to be around this mark T: Well you did, because you re a Lakers fan D: but not many expected to see North City here, which means it s time to stop focusing on who left the club and look at blokes like Jordyn Burke, Marty Curtis on the reportedly large pay packet he s getting and big Mitch Johns coming into replace them and, of course, Derick Micallef booting sausages like he s at a barbecue. Still, my Lakers I mean, the Lakers are the real deal this year, and if anyone can stop North City it s them don t forget that Lake Wendouree defeated North City in the final round of the season at Lakerland last year, so they know they can do it, but it won t be easy! T: Last one, Sunbury against Melton South under lights at Clarke Oval. D: Sunbury are flying at the moment, whilst the Panthers are looking for the interleague break to get a chance to regroup. Lions easy. T: Until next week my friend or at least I think it s until next week, we ll catch up to chat about interleague of course, but whether our services are required for the interleague record is yet to be seen. D: If they want to sell records mate, they ll come knocking, don t worry. 4 BFNL RECORD

5 ROUND 5 FOOTBALL PREVIEW by Shaun Kelly With just one week until most teams get their first break of the 2016 season, we enter Round 5 today in the Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League knowing one thing for sure this season is shaping to be one of the closest on record, evidenced by the quality of matches we have in store for this afternoon. BACCHUS MARSH return home to Maddingley Park to face BALLARAT today on the back of a monster 122-point victory against Melton South last weekend with new recruit Damien Cupido making an immediate impact, booting 10 goals in his Cobras debut last weekend, with Jackson Bolton, Hamish Coulton and the impressive Alec Del Papa all booting three each as well in a watershed day for the Cobras. They face a Swans side today that have come back to earth a bit over the last fortnight after a fantastic start to the season, as evidenced by a 90 point defeat to Sunbury last week despite the best efforts of young gun Mitch Bishop, who was very impressive in his best senior performance to date. He ll need it again this week, as the addition of Cupido up forward has suddenly made the Cobras look that much more dangerous it means one of he or Cam Richardson take the second defender, which is a matchup that Travis Hodgson would take any day of the week, and it frees up Alec Del Papa to get dangerous across half-forward, and with the likes of Tyson Shea, Matt Denham and Deccy Phyland feeding the ball to them, it could be a long afternoon for the Ballarat backline. PREDICTION: If BACCHUS MARSH start strong again, they ll get a percentage-booster Big game for MELTON today, who currently sit third on the ladder and have a chance to climb today as they come off a bye last week to face an EAST POINT side that almost pinched one against Redan last week, coming from 35 points down at three-quarter time to hit the front late in the last quarter when Rhys Monument kicked a pair of final-quarter goals, but Redan responded to kick the final goal of the game to take out a two-point win that leaves East Point sitting on 1-3, but having played two teams expected to be amongst the upper echelon this season. Both teams will see this as a very winnable game, and a lot could be decided in the duel between Roo Paul Kodorenko and Blood Mark Maric in the ruck two of the in-form ruckmen in the game at the moment. East Point are blooding their talented youth this year as well, with Lachlan Thornton making his debut a fortnight ago and decorated junior Joe Dodd playing his first senior game this week and both Rebels duties notwithstanding for Dodd will look forward to getting out on the wide expanses of Maccy Park today. PREDICTION: Got a feeling MELTON will come out hard at home today they ve got a tough run after the interleague break and will want to show the football world that they can beat the top teams, which should get them over the line against a hot-and-cold Roos outfit. Match of the Round takes place at Wendouree Reserve today as the final two undefeated sides in the league, LAKE WENDOUREE and NORTH BALLARAT CITY, square off in what many have already dubbed a September Preview with both teams coming off impressive wins of different magnitudes last weekend the Lakers with a grueling ten-point win at Darley Park, a ground where they haven t experienced much success of recent times, and North City owning Sebastopol on Mother s Day with a 111 point victory powered by an eight-goal, best on ground performance by Derick Micallef, who is approaching the form that had him as a Henderson Medal favourite before his untimely injury last year. This should be a cracking game with quality match-ups on every line, and as always in a game of this caliber, the midfield battle is going to be crucially important, as both teams have strong goalkickers both up forward and through the middle of the ground Nathan Pring and Marty Curtis both kicked four goals for each of the Lakers and Northies respectively last week which gives them both some real firepower through the midfield and half-forward lines. Tough game to tip, as both teams are in fantastic nick at the moment. PREDICTION: In a game this close, home ground advantage can sway me, and it s doing so today as I plump for LAKE WENDOUREE to stay undefeated going into the interleague break. REDAN take on DARLEY in what should be another fascinating contest at the City Oval today, with both teams showing some real positives last week, but also some negatives Redan were almost run off their feet by East Point after leading by 35 points at three-quarter time, and it was only a late Brenton Riordan goal that got them over the line in the end for their second win of the season, whilst Darley again gave it everything they could against Lake Wendouree, but came up ten points short and as a result sit outside the top six with a 1-3 record and a tough fortnight coming up. It was good to see Nathan Horbury back in the Redan line-up last week, and whilst we know from last year that it will take him a couple of weeks to get back into match-winning form, having him there just adds another element to a midfield rotation that is already impressive with Callum Currie, Dean Mathews and Chris Giampaolo in there, and will add some real steel to their mix. They ll need it today as well, as whilst Darley haven t been in the same form they showed in late August and all of September last year, they still have Steve Kennedy, Mitch Banner and Anthony Chiu in pretty good nick at the moment, and if they all get up and firing, they could make things quite uncomfortable for Eammon Gill and his coaching staff. PREDICTION: If REDAN don t have a final-quarter fade-out like last week, they ll score their third win of the season The final night game for the home-and-away season takes place this weekend as MELTON SOUTH travel to Clarke Oval to take on an in-form SUNBURY, who monstered Ballarat after half time last weekend, turning what was a competitive game up until half time into a 90 point drubbing thanks to a seventeen goal to four final quarter. Alik Magin showed his class last weekend, taking a game by the scruff of the neck for the first time in his short Lions tenure so far, with Ben Guthrie booting five goals and Nathan Wood continuing his fantastic start to the season. The Panthers got rolled over in the Cupido Show against Bacchus Marsh last weekend, and won t find things any easier tonight against a Lions side that have shown some real class this year, and will be using this game to continue their momentum before a tough run after the interleague break. PREDICTION: SUNBURY in a canter 8 BFNL RECORD

6 ROUND 5 NETBALL PREVIEW by Shaun Kelly We re starting to get to the stage of the season in the BGT A Grade netball competition where teams are forging their path for the 2016 season, where we don t have to rely on past performances to get a gauge of where teams are at for the year and we can look with some degree of confidence at what s coming ahead. That being said, we re looking at one of the closest seasons in recent years, so as we take a look at this weekend s Round 5 fixtures, we should be set for another exciting weekend of netball. The mood at BACCHUS MARSH must have been fantastic during the week, as a strong second half performance against Melton South saw them do something that hadn t been achieved since Round 8, 2014 win an A Grade game, which they did with a scoreline. The team they beat on that fateful day almost two years ago was BALLARAT, who have taken off since that day to play finals last year, and as the Swans head to Maddingley Park today, the Cobras will be wanting to map their improvement on what Leesa Battistello has done with her Ballarat side over the last 18 months, and whilst they went down against an undefeated Sunbury last weekend, they ll take a degree of happiness from the result with first-choice GD Chelsea McMahon out of the side and Abbey Wiltshire stepping up from B Grade to perform well in her place, and Kelly Moran coming back into the side to score 20 of the Swans 23 goals. Today will prove a tougher task for the Cobras, but with a new-found spirit after a win, similar to the Swans of 12 months ago, they ll now no longer be considered an easy win. PREDICTION: The Cobras will come out hard early, but the height of Moran and their fast midcourt will see BALLARAT get the win. SUNBURY, after a close win against Ballarat last weekend, will meet MELTON SOUTH at Clarke Oval this Saturday night as the Panthers still search for their opening win of the season. The Lions didn t have things their own way against the Swans, who led at the first two breaks before Sunbury came back to tie the scores at three-quarter time, and then outlast Ballarat in the final stanza thanks to Kathryn Williams and new player Laura Carland in goals, and a standout game from Monique Clark in the defensive half. Captain Beck Anstey will return to the Sunbury line-up after missing the last couple of games through duties at the Indoor Nationals, and her presence will be a huge boost to a Sunbury side who can t afford to take the young Panther side too lightly. PREDICTION: SUNBURY shouldn t have too many difficulties in this one. MELTON return to the court this weekend after last weekend s bye, and they face a tough task with the undefeated EAST POINT coming to town, fresh off a hardfought win over Redan, set up by a dominant 14-6 first quarter and a 30 goal game from young shooter Lauren Jew. Melton will be looking forward to welcoming coach and goal shooter Renee Hulls back to the lineup this weekend to boost their goal end after a poor day in goals against Sebastopol a couple of weeks ago, and she may face a familiar foe this weekend with a clearance for former Booroondarra Genesis and Macedon star Kate McLeod floating into the BFNL offices with an East Point stamp on it, which would give the Roos a massive defensive boost. PREDICTION: EAST POINT should be too strong here, although the Bloods will fire a shot or two early. REDAN will be looking for their second win of the season as they welcome DARLEY to the City Oval today, with the Devils coming off a 21 goal loss at the hands of Lake Wendouree and Redan taking some heart from a ten-goal loss against a strong East Point side. Methinks that the Lions are better than what their record suggests they ve come across three undefeated sides in Lake Wendouree, North Ballarat City and East Point so far this season, and their one win so far was pretty convincing against Melton South. They lost shooter Tasha Dack at half-time last week, who is just starting to get used to Victorian conditions, due to VNL duties, so captain Emma Henry swung herself from defense into attack and almost changed the game in a best-on-court performance. The Devils will be looking to continue their impressive start to the season, and they don t have a bad record at the City Oval, so they ll be confident of coming home with a win today. PREDICTION: Will be a close game until the third quarter, before REDAN pull away to score their second win of the year and signal a bit of a warning that they re on the way up the ladder. The final game of the round is arguably also the best, as two undefeated sides in LAKE WENDOUREE and NORTH BALLARAT CITY face off at the Wendouree Reserve in what should be a fascinating game. Both teams had little trouble in putting away their opponents last week Lake Wendouree with a 21 goal win over Darley and North City by 19 goals against Sebastopol thanks to dominant displays under the ring, with Mel Allen returning to score 34 goals for the Lakers and Jordyn Bibby knocking down 49 of the Northies 54 goals for the day. There s been some much-hyped games between these two sides over the last couple of years, and each time North City has tried to get the jump on the Lakers to build an early lead, and managed to do so successfully on their way to victory something Lakers coach Kirsty Walsh will be well aware of today. There ll be a fair degree of familiarity between these two teams today thanks to the Regional VNL competition, where Lakers Allen, Molly Boyle and Kara Hart were teammates with North City s Bibby, Emma Church and Stacey & Gina McCartin, and also through the number of high-leverage games these two teams have played over the years. PREDICTION: As I say every week, until NORTH BALLARAT CITY give me a solid reason to tip against them, you ll nary hear a bad word about Annie s Angels in this space!! 10 BFNL RECORD

7 A MESSAGE FROM WORKSAFE AFL VICTORIA COUNTRY Celebrating Community Umpiring Round Football communities across the country will celebrate and recognise the important role umpires play in our great game in the 2016 Community Umpiring Round. Celebrated from May 13-15, the initiative is designed to recognise the contribution of those patrolling the boundary, manning the goal line and controlling the action out on the field each week. In Victoria, there are more than 6,000 registered umpires at community level, along with thousands of club-based umpires, who commit their time and energy to allow those chasing the Sherrin the chance to do so. Supported by the AFL during Round 8 of the 2016 Toyota AFL Season, the devoted round educates the football public about the roles and responsibilities of umpires and reminds all participants within our game to take responsibility for their behaviour on match day. AFL Victoria strongly encourages all affiliated Leagues to work with their local umpiring groups and associations to embrace this round and thank them for the critical role they play in our game. Some of the activities community leagues are encouraged to undertake include building relationships between local coaches and umpiring groups as well as host an umpires training session where football clubs can gain a better appreciation for the role. Community Umpire Round is also another opportunity to encourage those who want to be involved in the greatest game in the world to take up umpiring. If you are new to the game, or your playing days are over, then umpiring is a great way to contribute to community football. Regardless of your age, gender, culture or ability, anyone can get involved in umpiring and enjoy the many benefits the role provides. Not only do you get the best view of the action, but it helps keep you fit, earn money, be part of a team and learn leadership skills that you can take with you when you walk off the ground. For details on how you can become an umpire, find your local umpire group using the online Umpire Group Locator www. aflvic.com.au/umpiring/umpiring-grouplocator 12 BFNL RECORD

16 SUNBURY LIONS SNIPPETS MELTON SOUTH PANTHER PRESS Welcome to everyone to our 2nd and final night game for 2016 tonight against Melton South. The senior side appears to be coming together nicely having an over 100 point win against Ballarat last week, the Alfredton Oval is in terrific condition with the new surface giving both sides a chance to play good football, if anything the wind was very blustery and swirly but that didn t stop Sunbury from grabbing the game in the ¾ quarter kicking 11 goals into the wind to make Ballarats job even harder in the last, great to see Ben Guthrie get amongst the goals with 5. The reserves got back to the winners circle with a comfortable win, Sam Sewell is starting to get a bit more relaxed around goals ending the day with 2 in 2 minutes and being a good contributor for the day. The under 18s welcomed 4 newbies in to the team getting Nicco, Macca,Darc and Aidan, registered during the week, good to see some older bodies in the team to take some of the heavy work off the younger boys, welcome back. The netballers had a mixed day with the A s, B s and D s having good wins and the C s and 19 s being beaten, the 19s could do with a bit of help from a talent point so if any experienced girls are out there in this age group consider a game with a great bunch of girls. Don t forget the Ladies Night tonight tickets are still available and the time has been set to suit the netball. Next week is the Inter League round bye and the following week we travel to Redan which is a Saturday game not a Sunday as in earlier fixtures. Social Notes: Charlie Bezzina retired Homicide Detective has been booked for the Presidents Luncheon on Saturday 04th June against Sebastapol, 2 course lunch, tickets are $50.00 ph and are available from John Sanderson or Hedley Duhau get in quick the room will fill fast. After the game the players are having their IPod Shuffle/Fancy Dress Night, see Kova to get your song on the IPod and you dress accordingly for the song, all welcome come and support the players there is not many after game functions for the year. Well let s hope Crafty got some sleep on the plane apparently he didn t get much before hand and wasn t happy about having to get up to go to the airport, some sweaty boys waiting there...lucky he has a good mum!!! Talk about cats having 9 lives, how can you bury your pet cat in the back yard with the full service and 4 days later it is meowing at the back door??? Some assistant coach has super powers or just buries the wrong cat!!!! Blame the Vet... Let s have full effort all day in all games then enjoy a week s break. Today we head across to Sunbury to take on an old foe. It hasn t been a happy hunting ground for us in the past but let s hope we can turn it around. On a positive note, it s the last night game we play for the year, so we can put our night goggles away. Football- Well, the senior boys saw the Damien Cupido show first hand. We were no match for the Marsh all over the ground. Best on ground was Daniel Leggett. The reserves again started slowly and were a long way back at half time. To there credit, they fought it out in the second half. It s time to bring that effort for 4 quarters and be more competitive. Remember, it s a privalidge to wear our jumper so from now on lets wear it with a bit of pride. The under 18 s again had a very competitive game. Keep up the effort and hardwork and the wins will soon come. Good luck to all the teams! Netball- Whilist only having 2 winning teams on the day (under 19 s and D grade), the other 3 games were close contests and could ve gone either way. Great to see you Panther girls play with Panther Pride and never give up. Good luck to all teams and keep up the great work. Social- A great day was had by all ladies last week. It was a fantastic turn out and great to see, you all having a good day. Well done to everyone who attended and thank you to the girls who organised the day, it was a Great effort, and then to see so many people attend the after function, and party on was amazing!!! The atmosphere around the club is great, but would be even better if we had that winning feeling. Thanks to everyone who helped make the night. Keep an eye on our website for upcoming social events. Sponsors of the week: Bakers delight and Aus Tender Cuts. Be sure to support our sponsors whenever you can. Wear our club colours into their shops to show that we are grateful for their sponsorship. Thank-you. Volunteers of the week: This week goes to the dynamic trio of Kev Cottam, Ray Orten and Terry Noonan. These boys spend all day on the gate collecting gate takings. It s not a flashy job but we thank-you for your efforts each home game. Well done. My spies tell me there were some very sore heads on Mothers Day. Maybe one too many jelly shots were had the previous day? Good stuff ladies! Until next week, The Prowling Panther #PantherPride 30 BFNL RECORD

18 BACCHUS MARSH COBRA S CHATTER BALLARAT SWAN S CHATTER The GB Forestry Cobras The Bacchus Marsh Football & Netball Club are very pleased to announce and welcome GB Forestry as our proud Naming Rights sponsors for the next 3 years, supporting grassroots football and netball within our community. GB Forestry Managing Director, Michael Kennedy said I understand clubs sometimes need to look outside for experienced players like former AFL players Cameron Richardson and our new recruit Damian Cupido but it s very pleasing that the Cobras provide opportunities predominantly for local footballers and netballers and give them a chance to follow their passion for sport and represent their community. The club would like to acknowledge the generous contribution provided by GB Forestry and thank Michael for his ongoing commitment to the Club. Their wonderful support along with all of our other sponsors will assist in the successful running and operation of our football and netball programs. Round 4 Last weekend the G B Forestry Cobras played Melton South in Melton and it was a very successful day for most teams. In football, the senior s with Coops kicking 10 goals had a very strong win running out victors by 122 points, the reserves ran out victorious by 72 points and the U18 s had a hard fought win by 37 points. In the Netball, we also had some team inspiring victories; the A graders had their first win for the season running out winners by 6 goals, the B graders run out victors by 6 goals, the C graders had a strong win by 11 goals and unfortunately the D graders and the 19 and Unders both lost their games by 20 goals each. Cobra s Chatter The club would like to announce and welcome ex AFL player DAMIAN CUPIDO to the club. Coops will be an added addition to our already potent forward line alongside Richo, Del Papa, McNay White & Phyland. Ground Day Raffle This weekend s ground day raffle will be for the Bluebird House which is a not-for-profit Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation and Transitional Facility. Bluebird House relies on its volunteers and community support to keep it running, the BMFNC supporters, friends and members have always supported any cause that has been presented to them and we know the GB Forestry Cobras families will again give generously to support this cause. Today the Active Electrical Ballarat Swans travel down the highway to take on the Bacchus Marsh FNC. The Cobras are playing well and they are always a difficult opponent on their home turf. The Ballarat Swans need to straighten up their season after the loss last week and a win today going into a 2 week break will give the Swans confidence going forward. Football: It was a disappointing day with only one win on the football arena. The seniors came up against a far superior side in Sunbury. The Swans were no match for their height and experience and that was evident at the final siren. The reserves faced a similar problem in their match with Sunbury boasting a number of senior players who were too strong on the day. The U/18.5 started the day with a good win to record their second win for the season. The Swans held a slender one point lead at the final break but were able to get on top in the final quarter and take the points. Netball: Out of the 5 matches played the Ballarat Swans recorded two wins in C and 19/Under. The A graders continue to push more fancied opponents and on this occasion it was Sunbury who had to fight off a very determined Swans outfit. B Grade tried hard all day but their opponents were too strong and finished with the points. C Grade recorded a good win which sees them on top of the ladder with a slight percentage advantage. D Grade was beaten narrowly and remains with one win at the moment. 19 & under recorded a percentage boosting win which has them sitting a clear second on the ladder. Congratulations to Tom Stapleton on his 50th senior game today. A win today will make that milestone worthwhile. Social News: Ballarat Swans Gatsby Ball tonight at Mechanics Institute, 117 Sturt Street Ballarat, 7.00 pm start. Let s have a great night and hopefully enjoy wins in all grades. Last Saturday night was Karaoke Night and thanks to Shaun in organising the equipment. An enjoyable night but don t think there were any stars of the future amongst the performers. 21 LAKE WENDOUREE LAKERS NOTES NORTH BALLARAT CITY Today we host North city at the Ballarat Isuzu oval. Both clubs have been travelling nicely in both football and netball so we expect to see some great viewing today! What a great day it was for the lakers down at darley park last Saturday. We had a win in every grade in the netball and a win in both the reserves and seniors in the football with the under 18 s just falling short. Kel Berrys girls starting the day off great for the club with a win. It was a similar win in the D grade with the girls winning C grade girls had a good day winning Different story with the B grade easily getting up 52-31, great win girls! The A grade girls had a thumping win as well winning Well done girls and good luck all to today! Knowlesy boys tried their hearts out last week but fell short unfortunately to the darley boys. Better players were jim halloran, kynan raven and xavier schuurs. Pims projects made it two wins in a row with a 5 goal win over the Devils. The boys played terrifically into the wind at times which set their win up beautifully. Better players were ash mullane, Johnny foster and Jacky elkington up forward! What a great win for the senior boys last week beating the reigning premiers. Boys played a great 4 quarter effort to win by 9 points. Steve Clifton was stand out best player with his attack on the contest. Well done to Nathan pring who also starred and congratulations on his 200th club game! Reminder that we have our ball tonight up at lakers, tickets still available online at ticket host or contact Julie maher for some. It s always a great night so be sure to get along. Good luck to everyone playing today and Carn lakers!! With a predicted gloomy day not coming about quite as bad as we thought, the lights went on for the Senior game and it was another great result with a 111 point win against Sebastopol. The boys were consistent for the whole game, keeping the pressure up and not coasting they had some great speed through the play. Derick Micallef was best on ground with eight goals on the day and new recruit for 2016 Marty Curtis put in a great game. This week it is a top of the table clash against Lakers and it should be a great game to gauge how both sides are travelling this time of the year. Unfortunately it was another loss for the Reserves but they did show some improvement as the game progressed, unable to get back however after a big first half from Sebastopol, the boys did outscore them in the second half but it was all too late. Good games from Aaron Sedgwick and Nathan Olver who both applied pressure and speed across the ground. Our Under 18.5 s had their first win of the season after showing good form so far. It was a great win for them and their confidence. They scored well for the whole game, consistent play and pressure helped the win. Matt Geary and Billy Hoye, Billy returning from injury, both contributed well to the winning side. Our netballers continued with their good form as we start the season. All teams were able to claim a win on the weekend with all combining well after our first three weeks. Tonight we have our Trivia Night at the OCA Pavilion at St Pat s. Trivia provided by Trivia with a Twist. It was a great night last year so come along tonight at 7.00pm. At only $10 per head, BYO nibbles and drinks at bar prices is should be a good night for everyone. Good luck to all competing today. Go North 40 BFNL RECORD

23 REDAN LIONS ROAR DARLEY DIARY Last Saturday we enjoyed probably one of last footy games played in the sunshine as we celebrated Mothers Day round. The U18 s started the day with a close game. East Point kicked away in the last 10 or so minutes of the last quarter to take the 4 points. The U18 will looking to reverse the result this week against Darley. The Reserves had a slow start, but after the half time break they turned the tables & run away with game to record a 71point win. Sully & Robbo with 4 goals each. After leading for 3 quarters the Seniors had to fight it out in the last when East came out firing with some quick goals to start the quarter. It was a cracking effort last weekend boys, but just got away from us in the dying stages of the game. Let s do everything professionally over the coming weeks. We live in a culture that relishes tearing others down. It s ultimately more fulfilling though, to help people reach their goals instead of feeling jealous. In saying this we would like to thank and praise our under 18 lads and Jacob Whitney (and his coaching staff) on the efforts for 2016 to date. You boys are finally reaping some reward for what has been a very difficult last few years. It is so great to see you boys winning games!! We all have our work cut out for us today meeting Redan. One of the competitions most professional outfits both on and off the field. The Devils are certainly a proud club, with passionate supporters who are right behind you all. Stay focused and stay united and the wins will come. NETBALL: It was a tough day for the netballers last weekend. The girls certainly give it their all week in, week out and that is all we ask. They are a great bunch, we love having them as part of the club and especially in the rooms on a Thursday night, after game day and more importantly at our functions. They have a load of fun and laughs.. we appreciate what you bring to the club girls. Go get em today. SOCIAL: A huge thank you goes out to Tash Sage, Ally Edwards, Bianca, Brooke, Mel (everyone who helped) for our Ladies Day last weekend. It was yet another perfect day for the women of our club to sit back and really enjoy themselves. A special thanks to Vicki Baker for running the bar (never getting to sit and enjoy this day, but instead enjoy serving the champas to all) and also to her assistant for the day Marty Dunen. It was a nice reminder to us all that the Devils are a family club with plenty of amazing women behind our boys. Upcoming event is Ball in the Barn! Saturday 25th June. I for one am very excited about this Ball at The Woolshed in Exford. Get your tickets early so the social committee don t have to chase you up. DARLEY DEN: Join Our Team.. interested in becoming a 2017 committee member? Maybe you know someone else that would make a great committee member. We are calling all expressions of interest in any area (from Executive Committee to General Committee Members, Football Dept, Netball Dept, Trainers, etc) your one role you play helps our club become bigger and better. 25 MELTON BLOODS BANTER EAST POINT KANGAS CORNER Round 4 is upon us with a home game against East Point in what should prove to be a litmus test for the Bloods in With wins against Melton Sth and Sebastapol, the Bloods are up and about and the weeks rest will only do us good. Whilst the Bloods are enjoying third rung on the ladder and East Point are in eighth spot, there is nothing between the two clubs, each having had two wins. There has been plenty of rain at Maccy Park so far this week so the ground should be in tip top shape providing the forecast for sun late in the week holds up. This game will be a real corker Social News. The Sportsman s Night has come and gone. By all accounts everyone who turned up had a great time. It is a great shame that many players don t see the need to support their Club. Thanks mainly to Jess and Murph for organizing the event with help from many others around the Club. Also on the social front is the big 10K draw on 26th of June. Tickets have been printed and will go on sale at $100 a shot this week. Be on the lookout for your chance to snag a major prize. Apart from individual tickets there will be a number of syndicate tickets generated. So just be aware of this and expect a tap on the shoulder for a $10 contribution from time to time. This is a major fundraiser for the club and it is essential that players and members get behind it. The Meltonians are beginning to spread the word of their upcoming Horse Racing night coming up on July 16th. This promises to be a fun night with many local nags in contention. The evening will also incorporate a shortened Goods and Services Auction so the night gives may opportunities for our supporters to come along and have a great time while supporting the club. This year s Presentation Night will be at the Stone Bar and Grill in Melton on September 23rd. This is a very good venue which has the distinct advantage of being in town. However places are limited so get your calendar organized so you do not miss this crucial event. Like all social or fundraising events, success is guaranteed by member participation. Our committee people put in hours of hard work and it is frustrating sometimes to see low rates of member participation. OK we know not everyone can turn up to every event but please make every effort to support the social events and so support your club. A new batch of polos shirts has just arrived from our supplier as have long sleeve jumpers. If you have outstanding orders for any merchandise please see Patto with some $$ in hand to collect your goods. Socks and Shorts are also in stock. Club memberships are past due and are mostly paid up. There are a few members who have requested a payment plan which is ok with us but please make it easy on your committee people and come forward rather that have us chase you. A reminder for all members to use our sponsors as often as possible. Their support helps keep the club going. Sponsors of the week are Middy Electrical and Bulmans Garden Supplies. They would love to see you and offer their services so don t be shy and wear your club colours. Check the website for all the latest news from the Club, including the popular Daisy TV. GO BLOODS Football Report It was a heart stopper at the City Oval last week. The Seniors were chasing all day until a burst of goals to start the last quarter saw us go into red time ahead. Unfortunately for us there was one last gasp in Redan that saw them get the 4 points but only just in the end. The boys should not be too downhearted after that effort. We have been close all season but only one win is on the board so today s trip down the Western Highway to Melton is of even greater importance. GO ROOS. The Reserves also went down to a strong Redan outfit but the Unders got up to record another good win Netball Report Last week against Redan saw our netballers secure three wins: A, C and D grades. In A grade our centre court players dominated and took control to steady the play when the pressure was really on. Best: Kate Martin, Clare Blanchfield and Lauren Atkinson. B grade defenders fought tirelessly all game with Rhiannon Whitson, Perri Fenton and Taylor Banham awarded best players. C grade saw all ten players contributing to their solid win. Best: Gabrielle Carson, Liz Carson and Jacinta Cooper. D grade have really gelled as a team and now have three wins to show for their hard work. Best: Kylea Wilson, Jenna Davidson and Amber Allen. 19/Under found the opposition s height at each end of the court a real challenge but fought hard regardless. Success is not far away so keep up the hard work girls. Best: Courtney McCrow, Laura Fay and Keeley Haseloff. Best of luck to all grades today. Lets all get back to long time club supporter The Red Lion tonight after the game for a drink and a bite to eat. They have just opened a new section of the pub so it will be interesting to see what they have done. Hope to see you all there 48 BFNL RECORD

27 BALLARAT FOOTBALL UMPIRES ASSOCIATION REPORT This week is Umpire Appreciation Round. Often a thankless job umpires are a key ingredient in allowing so many men, women, boys and girls the enjoyment of participating in football throughout Country and Metropolitan Australia. The BFUA has close to 250 members who train and prepare no differently to the many players within the AFL Goldfields Region they have similar challenges including injuries, selection, families and work to tackle on a weekly basis to get themselves right. This week when you are attending the footy take a minute to think about the role of our many umpires and if you get a chance stop and have a chat and say thanks for contributing so significantly to our great Game. The weeks AFL matches provided many highlights but also few lowlights namely the questioning of umpires integrity. Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge summed it up pretty well during his weekly media conference in reference to the umpires performance in their clash against the Adelaide Crows. Beveridge message was pretty simple It s always swings and roundabouts. Hopefully the message to young umpires out there is keep pursuing your profession, keep pursuing your pocket money if you re a kid (because) one day you could become an AFL umpire and it s a very rewarding profession. Many coaches should take a leaf out of Beveridge s book. Umpire Related Issues If any club has an umpire related issue that they would like to discuss with the BFUA please Gary Learmonth at gary@aflgoldfields.com.au or call Gary on Each issue will be dealt with accordingly and passed onto the appropriate people within the BFUA. It is important that if a club does have something to discuss with the BFUA, the issue is presented to the BFUA through the right channels within your club. EG: From club official such as club President/ Junior Coordinator or Senior Coach. 29 NETBALL REPORT By AFL Goldfields Netball Manager Kim Bailey In 2016 we have the introduction of many new rules following the 2015 World Netball Cup. These new rules although however are creating some confusion rights across the wider netball communities. Below are a couple of frequently asked questions to help both our players, umpires and supporters to understand the changes Why have the word penalties been replaced with sanctions? The International Netball Federation determined that the term sanction is to be used instead of penalty to avoid confusion with similar terms. The term penalty pass includes the option for the GS or GA to pass or shoot when it is awarded in the goal circle If time is called for a player who is bleeding, injured or ill, does that player have to come off the court? YES. The bleeding, injured or ill player must leave the court within 30 seconds and receive treatment off the court. The primary care person is only permitted to take the court to assess the player s medical condition and to assist the player from the court. If time is called for a player who is bleeding, injured or ill, can that player be treated on court within the 30 seconds? NO. Treatment is no longer permitted to take place on court. The bleeding, injured or ill player must leave the court within 30 seconds and receive treatment off the court. For blood, is it the bleeding player who must leave the court or is it the player who had blood on them that must leave the court, or both? Under rule 9.3.1, the umpires hold time for blood when noticed or when requested by an on-court player. Under the guidance from the International Netball Federation, Netball Australia has been advised that any player with blood must leave the court for this to be cleaned. As such, both the player who is bleeding and any player with blood on them would need to leave the court. The player(s) must leave the court within 30 seconds and receive treatment off the court. Time will not normally be given to clean up players on the court. However, in the event that several players are affected, the umpires may decide to take whatever action they deem to be appropriate. If a player has to leave the court for injury/illness or blood, can a substitution be made for that player? YES. During the stoppage, both teams may make substitutions and/or team changes, provided these are completed within the time allowed. There are no limit to the number of substitutions, provided the players used are those named for the match. What if our team decides not to replace the injured/ill or bleeding player, can they return to the court? YES. If the injured players position is left vacant, that player, or a substitute, may subsequently, after advising the umpire, take the court immediately after one of the following: A goal has been scored in this case the player or the substitute must play in the position left vacant. A stoppage for injury/illness or blood At an interval I am unclear around the definition of the pivot. Does this mean that a player can t pivot on the heel of their foot? Would this be considered as gaining ground? NO. The pivot is defined as a movement where the player with the ball swivels on either the heel or the ball of the landing foot without gaining any ground. A player may choose to either pivot on the ball of their foot (a more traditional type of pivot seen down the court) or on the heel of their foot (often seen by Goal Shooters or Goal Attacks in the goal circle). A player may not pivot on their heel and then the ball of their foot, or vice versa, ultimately gaining ground. Is it correct that, under the new Short Pass rule, at any point the ball is in flight, e.g. from the release to the catch, if there is insufficient space for an opposing player on court to be able to intercept the ball, then it is considered short? YES. The previous rule was based on where the hands of the thrower and the receiver were at the moment (instant) when the ball was released. The intent of the new rule is to ensure there is sufficient space during the transition of the ball (at any time during the pass) between the two sets of hands for an opponent to be able to intercept it during the transfer. North Ballarat City showed everyone last week that they are still the team to beat with an 18 goal Mother s Day win. Sunbury also continued on their winning way with a close contested game against Ballarat that saw only take the lead in the last quarter to tweak out a narrow win. This week Lake Wendouree take on North Ballarat City in what should be one of the matches of the year. Lakers have undisputedly the strongest midcourt in the competition with the ability to hold up the feed to North s shooting ring, again is the strongest going around should be a fascinating contest. Good luck to all teams. Happy Netballing. 56 BFNL RECORD
