Spoo is currently tied for fourth among longest tenured active coaches at the NCAA Division I level and is fifth all-time in FCS playoff appearances. IOWA HEAD COACH KIRK FERENTZ Kirk Ferentz is in his 12th season as the head coach at Iowa. Last season Ferentz led the Hawkeyes to an 11-2 record including a win over Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. He was named the Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year for the third time in his career. A former head coach at FCS member Maine and assistant coach in the NFL, Ferentz has posted an record at Iowa and a overall record. The team returns quarterback Ricky Stanzi to guide an offense that averaged 23.2 points per game last season. The defense is paced by defensive lineman Adrian Clayborn who is on the preseason watch lists for the Lombardi and Nagurski Awards. Iowa was 11-2 last season winning the FedEX Orange Bowl over Georgia Tech, ON THIS DATE IN EIU HISTORY September 4, Eastern Illinois held on for a win over Cameron (Okla.) as Andy Vogl completed 4-of-8 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown pass to Doug Hiatt. 3 September 4, 2010 Eastern Illinois at Iowa Page 3 EIU QUICK HITTERS TALE OF THE TAPE Senior Rashad Haynes opens the season ranked 7th on the EIU career interceptions list with 10. RS-Sophomore Brandon Large has won the starting job at QB and will take his first Division I snap at Iowa. EIU currently does not have an active quarterback with a Division I snap to their credit. EIU will have three new starters on the offensive line, the lone returning starters are left guard Eric Zink and center Willie Henderson. Kinnick Stadium is named after 1939 Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick. The stadium was renamed in Bob Spoo and Kirk Ferentz were both assistant coaches in the Big Ten from Spoo was the quarterback coach/offensive coordinator at Purdue while Ferentz was offensive line coach at Iowa. Wide receivers Charles Graves and Lorence Ricks both had games with more than 100 yards receiving last year. Graves had 109 against UT Martin while Ricks had 101 against Southeast Missouri. Running back Mon Williams will miss at least the first game of the 2010 season with a strained knee. Williams rushed for 870 yards last season including 107 in the FCS playoffs against Southern Illinois. EIU defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni began his collegiate career at Buena Vista College in Iowa. He later worked as the defensive coordinator at Drake from Former EIU player Brian Callahan has joined the Panthers staff as the offensive line coach. Callahan previously worked on the staff at Akron for six seasons before coming back to EIU. He graduated in Perry Burge and Artavious Dowdell will line up as the starting defensive ends for EIU at Iowa. Between the two of them they accounted for 8 of EIU s 24 sacks last season ranking first and second on the team. CJ James returned two interceptions for touchdowns last season which was tied for first nationally. Finished year with 152 interception return yards to rank fifth in the FCS. Also new this year is the FCS playoffs will expand to 20 teams with an opening round to be played on Nov. 27 and second round games played on Dec. 4. A selected number of teams will receive a first round bye. OVC Predicted Order Of Finish 1. Jacksonville State (11) Eastern Illinois (4) Eastern Kentucky (1) Tennessee Tech (1) Tennessee State (1) UT Martin Austin Peay - 38 Southeast Missouri Murray State - 29 (first place votes in parenthesis) Eastern Illinois Players On All-OVC Preseason Team Offense Willie Henderson - center Defense Perry Burge - defensive end Nick Nasti - linebacker CJ James - defensive back PRESEASON OVC HONORS Eastern Illinois had four players named to the preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference team released in July. Junior Willie Henderson was named to the squad as a center after earning second team All-OVC accolades at right guard last year. It will mark the fifth straight season that EIU has had a new player start at center. Three players were selected on the defensive side of the ball. CJ James was a first team All-OVC selection last year while defensive end Perry Burge was a second team All-OVC pick a year ago. Nick Nasti rounds out the preseason honorees at linebacker as the senior led EIU in tackles. panthers open a little thin at running back Eastern Illinois took a hit to its running back depth chart during the fall camp which turned what was supposed to be a strength of the team into an open race for playing time at Iowa. Senior running back Mon Williams who was tabbed to handle most of the carries will miss the opener after suffering a strained cruciate in his knee on Aug. 18. He is on a 2 to 3 week timetable to return for either the Central Arkansas or UT Martin game. Exiting the spring semester the No. 2 running back was Chevon Walker who has since been dismissed from the team and No. 3 was Desmin Ward who will sit the season with a medical redshirt. Enter into the picture Jimmy Potempa as the starter coming off a season where he was used more as a receiver than a runner out of the backfield. EIU did get a late transfer from Toledo in sophomore Jake Walker and will have freshmen Jimmy Lera, Cam White and AJ Woodson battling for extra carries. Corner -stone defense The so-called cornerstone of the Panthers defense is indeed EIU s two veteran starters at cornerback. Entering the season senior Rashad Haynes will start for the fourth straight year while senior CJ James is entering his third year as a starter. Haynes was a second team All-OVC selection last year that has been recognized for preseason All-American honors by one organization this year. He led the Panthers with 11 pass break-ups last year and ranks 7th on the EIU career list for interceptions. James was a first team All- OVC selection last season as his five interceptions ranked him 35th in the nation. James returned two interceptions for touchdowns and his 152 interception return yards ranked fifth in the FCS. POSITION CHANGES Position changes seem to always be part of football and it has been no different for Eastern Illinois during the spring and fall practices. During the spring workouts two players changed positions as Alain Marcelin and Shane Kelly both flipped sides of the ball. Marcelin moved from linebacker to fullback, a position he played in high school to give EIU depth at that spot. He had played in 32 games as a linebacker for the Panthers including 9 career starts. This past week Marcelin has again had a position change as he will be a back-up defensive end in certain situations at Iowa. Kelly played in just one game as a back-up defensive lineman. In the spring he moved to H-Back/tight end where he will primarily see time on special teams. During fall practice this season freshman AJ Woodson who came into camp as a defensive back was moved to the offensive side as a running back where he may see time on special teams this year. LOADED AT RECEIVER The Panthers offensive strength this season may be in its wide receiver corps. EIU returns its top eight receivers from last year in a group that head coach Bob Spoo calls the best he has had at EIU. The top eight returners all caught at least one touchdown last year with the top seven all in double digit receptions. Add into that mix tight ends Cody Bruns and Von Wise who are slated to EIU Returning Receivers (Rec-YDs-TD) 2..Jimmy Potema Kenny Whittaker Charles Graves Erik Lora Chris Wright Lorence Ricks Danny Vehovic Chavar Watkins be bigger targets in the new offensive scheme and EIU has ten credible targets to choose from. EIU will be running the Pistol Offense run by schools like Nevada and Indiana which gives receivers a chance to create offensively after making a catch.

5 September 4, 2010 Eastern Illinois at Iowa Page 5 YOUTH UNDER CENTER Eastern Illinois will open the season with a fresh face at quarterback as redshirt sophomore Brandon Large won the job in spring practice. Large played the 2008 season at Scottsdale Community College in Arizona before transferring and redshirting last season. EIU does not have an active quarterback on the roster that has previously taken a Division I snap. The Panthers have redshirt sophomore Shadonta Travis as one back-up and freshman Jimmy Garoppolo as the other entering the game. Fellow freshman Taylor Duncan is most likely set to redshirt this season. The last time that EIU entered a season with a quarterback that had not taken a previous Division I snap was 1996 when Mike Simpson (a Division III transfer from Eureka College) took over following a redshirt season. Simpson ended the year as a second team All-OVC performer ranking 8th in the NCAA in passing efficiency and taking EIU to the NCAA FCS playoffs. HELP FROM THE HAWKEYE STATE Eastern Illinois has had help from the Hawkeye State in recent years with several standout players including former Iowa kicker Austin Signor who earned first team All-OVC honors for the Panthers last year. Other recent stand out transplants from the bordering state were Clint Sellers from Chariton, an All-American linebacker in 2005, and Tim Carver from Urbandale, an All-American linebacker in the middle 1990 s. replacements on the line EIU returns two starters on the offensive line but must replace what might be one of the more talented units in recent history. Returning on the front line are left guard Eric Zink and center Willie Henderson. Zink will be starting for the third straight season while Henderson, a second team All-OVC selection at right guard last year, will move back to his natural position of center. Departing from last year s offensive line were three-time All-American Chaz Millard who played his senior season at center and tackles Otis Hudson and Chris Campbell. Hudson was a fifth round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals and appears headed to making the NFL club as a back-up guard. Campbell was a free agent selection of the Green Bay Packers who most likely will be a signee to the taxi squad once the NFL preseason ends. COOK TO DO MORE THAN PUNT THIS YEAR The kicking game may be more important this season than ever as the Panthers enter the year without a veteran kicker. Senior Kevin Cook an All-American candidate at punter has assumed that role to open the year at Iowa. Cook ranked 9th in the NCAA in punting last season and previously broke the school single season punting record held by former All-Pro punter Jeff Gossett. This will be Cook s first foray into kicking since he was a senior at Carmel HS in Behind Cook on the depth chart is freshman kicker Cameron Berra and in more recent practices wide receiver Erik Lora. BIG TEN NETWORK APPEARANCE Eastern Illinois will be making its third appearance on the Big Ten Network when the Panthers kick off the year at Iowa. EIU previously played on the network in 2007 at Purdue and 2008 at Illinois. All time this will be the Panthers 56th appearance on regional or network television with EIU holding a all-time record on TV. He played at Gordon Tech HS and originally signed with Ball State in February before being released from that offer. He will most likely redshirt this season. The second is running back Jake Walker a redshirt sophomore from Toledo who enrolled in classes on Aug. 23. He played two seasons at Toledo rushing for 85 yards with a high of 27 yards against Eastern Michigan in He earned a medical redshirt last year after playing in three games. Walker will wear No. 5 and rushed for 2,609 yards and 46 touchdowns at American Heritage HS in Florida. PANTHERS PICKED SECOND IN OVC Eastern Illinois was picked to finish second in the Ohio Valley Conference race in the preseason Coaches/SID poll. Jacksonville State was picked to finish first with 11 first place votes while EIU was second with four first place votes finishing just six points behind the Gamecocks in overall voting. Eastern Kentucky was third with one first place vote with Tennessee Tech fourth and Tennessee State fifth. JSU, EIU and EKU have been selected as the preseason OVC favorites by each preseason publication and poll. PAYTON TO BE HONORED Current New Orleans Saints head coach and former EIU quarterback Sean Payton will have his No. 18 officially retired by the Panthers during halftime of the home opener on Sept. 11 against Central Arkansas. Payton is scheduled to be on hand as the Saints will open the season with a Thursday night game on Sept. 9 and then do not play against until Sept. 20 on Monday Night Football. Currently wide receiver Charles Graves wears No. 18 and will be the last EIU player to wear that number. TWO PLAYERS ON FCS SCOUT BOWL LIST Eastern Illinois had two players named to the FCS Scout Bowl list prior to the season opener as seniors Kevin Cook and Rashad Haynes were both recognized. Cook is one of the top punters in the FCS ranks with a career punting average of 41.9 yards per punt. Last season he ranked 9th in the FCS with a 42 yards per punt average. Haynes is the Panthers top shutdown corner with 25 career pass break-ups and 10 career interceptions. He has made 159 career tackles including 115 solo stops. LATEST OPENER SINCE 2004 Most of it is due to the way the dates fall on the calendar but this season will mark the latest date EIU has opened a football season since 2004 when the Panthers played their opener on Sept. 11 against Indiana State. The Sept. 4 date stands as the fifth latest starting point to a season in the Bob Spoo era. EIU had openers on Sept. 5 during the 1987 and 1992 seasons and a Sept. 8 opener in The earliest calendar date for EIU to start a season was two years ago with an August 28 opening date at Central Michigan. EIU is 14-8 in season openers under Bob Spoo.
