Here is some of the terminology that contributes to UVA s culture. Grounds: The term used by students, faculty and alumni to refer to the University dating as far back as Thomas Jefferson. Campus is never used. First Year, Second Year, Third Year, Fourth Year: Instead of freshman, sophomore, junior, senior. Why you may ask? To be a senior implies that a person has reached the final phase of learning, a feat that Thomas Jefferson believed to be impossible, arguing instead that education is a life-long process. Commonwealth: Virginia is one of four constituent states of the United States of America that officially uses the name Commonwealth instead of the word state in all references. The other three commonwealths are Kentucky, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. UNIVERSITY NICKNAMES Virginia s athletics teams have been accompanied by a somewhat confusing array of nicknames. The most prominent and widely accepted of these monikers are Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos. Although the terms Cavaliers, Wahoos and Hoos are used almost interchangeably to refer to University teams and players, Cavaliers is more often used by the media, while Wahoos and Hoos are frequently used by Virginia students and fans. Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the Virginia players Wahoos during the fiercely contested rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890s. By 1940, Wahoos was in general use around Grounds to denote University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated Hoos sprang up later in student newspapers and has gained growing popularity in recent years. THE CAVALIER MASCOT The costumed Cavalier with a large character head debuted during Virginia s 1984 football season and has remained the official mascot of the University. The first documented Cavalier on horseback was Francis Bell, a Virginia student from Dublin, Va., in Bell rode onto the field dressed as Cavaliers for Virginia s home football game with Harvard on the afternoon of October 11. The Cavalier on horseback returned as the University s mascot in The UVA Polo Club provided both the horse and rider. However, the mounted Cavalier and his horse parted company in 1974 with the inception of AstroTurf at Scott Stadium. The mounted Cavalier made its return in the Florida Citrus Bowl at the end of the 1989 football season. Due to its instant popularity, the Cavalier on horseback returned the following season on a regular basis and continues to lead the Virginia football team onto the field at the beginning of all home games. UNIVERSITY COLORS Orange and blue were adopted as the University of Virginia s official athletic colors at a mass student meeting in UVA athletic teams had previously worn silver gray and cardinal red, but those colors did not stand out on muddy football fields, prompting a student movement to change them. One of the students attending the mass meeting was Allen Potts, a star athlete who played on Virginia s first football team in Potts showed up at the meeting wearing a navy blue-and-orange scarf that he had acquired during a summer boating expedition at Oxford University. Orange and blue were chosen as the official athletic colors after one of Potts fellow students pulled the scarf off Potts neck and, waving it to the crowd, yelled, How will this do? UVA later served as the inspiration for schools like Auburn and Florida when they selected school colors. WAH-HOO-WAH The origin of Wah-hoo-wah is uncertain. The cheer was used to root on Virginia teams as early as 1890 and may have been borrowed from Dartmouth College, whose athletics teams were once known as the Indians. Legend attributes the yell to Natalie Floyd Otey, who sang the ballad Where er You Are, There Shall My Love Be at Charlottesville s Levy Opera House in The predominantly student audience noticed that Otey warbled the first three words of the song between each of the stanzas and decided to join in the refrain. By evening s end, goes the legend, the crowd had corrupted Where er You Are into Wahhoo-wah. The Levy Opera House stands at the corner of High Street and Park Street and has since been renovated into an office building. 3

BLUE DEVILS The Cavaliers have put up some impressive offensive performances against Duke in recent games. Virginia has scored at least 30 points in 19 of the last 34 meetings against the Blue Devils and topped 40 points seven times. In the last 27 games, UVA has outscored Duke, (avg of ). The 2011 meeting between UVA and Duke at Scott Stadium marked the Cavaliers one of three UVA victories in the last nine meetings. In the 2010 meeting at Wallace Wade Stadium in 2010, Virginia s 48 points were the most scored in a UVA loss and there were 103 combined points between the two teams at the time it was the second-highest combined total in ACC history. The senior first broke the record with 421 passing yards against Central Michigan in Benkert broke his own record this season with 455 passing yards against UConn. The 417 passing yards also stood as a school team record for passing yards until UVA broke the record with 480 team passing yards in the 2012 meeting with Louisiana Tech. Matt Johns passed for a career-high 344 yards and two touchdowns as Virginia held off a late Duke rally to win Duke rallied from a 22-point fourth-quarter deficit and drove inside the Virginia 20 in the final minute behind a 49-yard pass from backup quarterback Parker Boehme to Anthony Nash. It was UVA s first win on a Friday since Nov. 10, 1939 when UVA beat Washington & Lee, 7-0. It was UVA s first non-conference road win since 2011 (at Indiana). UVA is now all-time on Fridays in the regular season. UVA handed Boise State its first double-digit loss at home since Sept. 8, 2001 vs. Washington State, which was a triumph. UVA snapped Boise State s 32-game regular season non-conference home winning streak, which dated back to the 2001 Washington State game. Boise State lost by 19 points at home to Virginia. In its 102 previous home games, Boise State lost 4 games by a combined 17 points. It was UVA s first win west of the Mississippi River since winning at BYU in LEVRONE PUTS BACK-TO-BACK 100-YARD RECEIVING GAMES TOGETHER In back-to-back games against UConn and Boise State WR Andre Levrone has set new career highs in receiving yards for a game. He recorded his first 100-yard receiving game against UConn with four catches for 127 yards and a score. Levrone followed that up with five receptions for 141 yards and two scores at Boise State, which led to him being named the ACC Receiver of the Week on Sept. 25. Levrone leads UVA with 348 receiving yards and his 26.8 yards per reception ranks No. 5 in the nation and No. 1 in the ACC. His 348 receiving yards ranks No. 4 in the ACC, while his four receiving touchdowns ranks No. 11 in the nation and No. 3 in the ACC. RECEIVING TRIO SETS RECORD AGAINST UCONN For the first time in program history, UVA had three different players record at least 100 yards receiving in the same game. Doni Dowling (136), Andre Levrone (127) and Olamide Zaccheaus (122) became the first UVA trio to accomplish the milestone in UVA s win over UConn. It was only the 10th time UVA had multiple Cavaliers with at least 100 yards receiving in the same game and the first time since the 2013 Georgia Tech game (Tim Smith, 151 yard & Darius Jennings, 119 yards). Dowling, Levrone and Zaccheaus are only the sixth ACC trio to accomplish the feat since Since 2000, Florida State accomplished the feat twice in 2000 and once in Miami did it in 2012 and Virginia Tech in Year ACC School vs. Opponent Players 2017 Virginia vs. UConn Doni Dowling (136), Andre Levrone (127), Olamide Zaccheaus (122) 2016 Virginia Tech at Pitt Bucky Hodges (145), Isaiah Ford (143), Cam Phillips (109) 2012 Miami vs. South Florida Clive Walford (135), Herb Waters (130), Phillip Dorsett (111) 2005 Florida State vs. The Citadel Chris Davis (125), De Cody Fagg (113), Greg Carr (104) 2000 Florida State vs. Clemson Snoop Minnis (163), Atrews Bell (111), Javon Walker (109) 2000 Florida State at Miami Atrews Bell (146), Snoop Minnis (145), Anquan Boldin (108) UVA RECEIVERS HAVE RARE ACCOMPLISHMENT IN 2017 UVA is one of eight schools in all of FBS in 2017 with at least three different players with at least one 100-yard receiving game. UVA is tied for No. 4 in the nation with three. Oklahoma State, who had four receivers go over 100 yards against Pitt this year, is the only other team this season with at least three players in the same game reach the 100-yard receiving mark. UVA ROLLS OVER 600 YARDS OF TOTAL OFFENSE AGAINST UCONN UVA accumulated 626 yards of total offense against UConn last time out. It was the most yards gained by the Cavaliers since 2010 when UVA gained 643 yards at Duke. It was UVA s first 600+-yard game of total offense since 2012 when the Cavaliers gained 625 yards of total offense against Louisiana Tech. 6

7 2017 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL TEAM NOTES BENKERT BREAKS UVA SINGLE-GAME PASSING/TOTAL OFFENSE RECORD QB Kurt Benkert was 30-of-40 for a career-high 455 passing yards against UConn on Sept. 16. He broke his own UVA single-game passing record (421) that he set last season against Central Michigan. UVA has had a quarterback throw for over 400 yards only three times in program history and Benkert has done it twice. Marc Verica was the first Cavalier to throw for at least 400 yards in a game in 2010 when he threw for 417 at Duke. Benkert also broke Verica s record for total offense in a game with 465 yards of total offense. Verica s record was 413 at Duke in DOWLING AND ZACCHEAUS REACH MILESTONE TOGETHER WR Doni Dowling and HB Olamide Zaccheaus each passed the career 1,000-yard receiving mark in UVA s win against UConn on Sept. 16. Zaccheaus became the 37th Cavalier in program history in the second quarter, while Dowling became the 38th Cavalier in program history in the fourth quarter. Against UConn, Dowling recorded his first career 100-yard receiving game (136). Zaccheaus recorded his second career 100-yard receiving game (122). Zaccheaus had his first last season against Central Michigan, the other career game QB Kurt Benkert threw for over 400 yards. DOWLING HONORS TIM HARRIS WR Doni Dowling moved from No. 7 to No. 5 prior to the Indiana game to honor CB Tim Harris. Wearing No. 5 since his arrival on Grounds in 2013, Harris had a season-ending injury in the opener against William & Mary. Dowling and Harris have been lifelong friends, as well as teammates at Richmond s Varina High School. BLANDING AND KISER ANCHOR THE DEFENSE ILB Micah Kiser (11.3) and FS Quin Blanding (10.8) currently rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the ACC in tackles. This is nothing new for the duo as they finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the ACC in tackles in 2015 and Kiser ranks No. 8 in the nation in tackles in 2017, while Blanding ranks No.13 in the nation. In 2016 Kiser (11.2) led the ACC in tackles and finished No. 4 nationally. Blanding (10.0) finished No. 2 in the ACC in tackles for the third year in a row and No. 9 nationally. Kiser (9.75) and Blanding (9.58) also finished No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the ACC in tackles in Since the ACC started tracking tackle leaders in 1990, no previous tandem of tacklers has led the league in tackles for two consecutive seasons until Kiser and Blanding. Blanding, who also finished No. 2 in the ACC in tackles in 2014 (10.25), is the only player in ACC history to finish second in tackles for three straight seasons. The only ACC player since 1990 to lead the league in tackles for three consecutive seasons is Boston College s Luke Kuechly ( ), now of the NFL s Carolina Panthers. BLANDING AND KISER GET HELP ON DEFENSE Despite ranking No. 1 and No. 2 in the ACC in tackles, FS Quin Blanding and ILB Micah Kiser are getting solid help on defense as UVA has four of the ACC s Top 15 tacklers. ILB Jordan Mack is No. 11 in the ACC with 8.0 tackles per game, while OLB Malcolm Cook is No. 15 with 7.7 stops per game. Cook made a career-high 13 stops against William & Mary and Mack made a career-high 16 tackles against Indiana. BLANDING DOUBLES UP THE TACKLES UVA s Quin Blanding has 21 double-digit tackle games over 40 collegiate games. Blanding has had six double-digit tackle games in each of his first three seasons. Blanding has 401 career tackles, 10.1 per game. VIRGINIA S 1,000 CAREER RECEIVING LIST Name (Years) Total Yards 1. Virginia was one of six schools in the nation that had zero career collegiate field goal attempts and punts among the kickers on its roster entering Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Troy and UAB are the other schools. This was the the second year in a row UVA has entered a season without a kicker that had attempted a field goal in college. Punter Lester Coleman and placekicker A.J. 15 2017 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL BRONCO MENDENHALL Bronco Mendenhall Head Coach Second Season Bronco Mendenhall is in his second season as Virginia s head football coach after being named the program s 40th head coach on Dec. 4, In Mendenhall s first season on Grounds he oversaw a secondary that boasted first-team All-ACC honoree and All- American, Quin Blanding. Blanding finished the season No. 2 in the ACC in tackles for the third year in a row with 120 stops. Inside linebacker Micah Kiser, an All-American and first-team All- ACC honoree, thrived to lead the ACC in tackles for the second year in a row with 134, which is tied with former Cavalier great Wali Rainer for fourth-most in a single season in program history. Kiser was also a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, becoming the first Cavalier since Tiki Barber in 1996 to earn both academic and athletic All-America honors in the same season. Offensively, in Mendenhall s first season, Taquan Mizzell became the first player in ACC history to record at least 1,500 career rushing and 1,500 career receiving yards. UVA quarterback Kurt Benkert set a couple of passing marks in UVA s new offense, including a program record for passing yards in a game with 421 against Central Michigan, which was only the second time in program history a UVA quarterback surpassed 400 passing yards in a game. Benkert reached 1,000 passing yards in four games and 2,000 passing yards in eight games, setting a program record for fastest to that standard in a season. Mendenhall came to Charlottesville after 11 years as the head coach at Brigham Young University. In his 11 seasons, from , Mendenhall compiled an overall record of at BYU to rank 12th in total wins among all FBS teams during that time. In the three seasons prior to Mendenhall becoming the head coach at BYU, the Cougars compiled an overall record of Over the last 11 years, the Cougars are one of only 11 programs to advance to a bowl game each season (includes the 2015 season). BYU is joined by Alabama, Boise State, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin on that list. Among those 11 teams, only Florida State has achieved more bowl wins (seven) than BYU s six bowl game victories. BYU football student-athletes have earned freshman All-America recognition in eight of the past 10 seasons. More than 60 BYU players have signed with NFL teams since Mendenhall arrived in Provo, including defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and Kyle Van Noy, the No. 40 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Under Mendenhall, the Cougars tied for seventh among all FBS programs for the most Academic All-America citations over the last decade and BYU tops all FBS programs with the most selections (39) to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society (recognizing starters and significant contributors finishing their eligibility with a 3.2 GPA or better over their college career) since the program began in The success of Mendenhall s leadership approach in running the BYU football program has been highlighted in a management book, Running Into the Wind: Bronco Mendenhall -- 5 Strategies for Building a Successful Team, written by Alyson Von Feldt and Paul Gustavson, a leading management consultant specializing in leadership development and organizational design. Mendenhall was elected in 2013 to the American Football Coaches Association Board of Trustees as the District 8 Representative and also serves on the AFCA Ethics Committee. Following the 2006 season, Mendenhall was named the American Football Coaches Association Region IV Coach of the Year. In addition, the Football Writers Association of America named Mendenhall one of nine finalists for the prestigious Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. A dominant defense led BYU to its seventh winning season in as many years as the BYU football team finished the 2012 season with eight wins, a program-best fourth consecutive bowl victory and the No. 3 defense in the nation. With an 8-5 record, BYU claimed its sixth season with as least eight wins under Mendenhall s eight-year head coaching tenure. Incredibly consistent all year long, BYU finished the year ranked No. 3 in total defense, allowing just yards per game. The Cougars ended the season ranked in the top four in five major defensive categories. Mendenhall has served as the BYU s defensive coordinator for much of his tenure as the head coach. He returned to a full-time role with the defense again in During his tenure in Provo, the Cougars have consistently fielded one of the nation s strongest defenses. Mendenhall s defense excels at keeping opponents out of the end zone. Entering the 2015 season, they averaged a No. 20 national ranking in scoring defense while he oversees the defense, including three top-10 ratings. 18 2017 VIRGINIA FOOTBALL HONORS/WATCH LISTS DID YOU KNOW? UVA senior Quin Blanding was named by his mother Cory Lee after the movie entitled The Mighty Quinn, staring Denzel Washington and Mimi Rogers. It was the first movie she saw following a checkup during her seventh month of pregnancy and the moment held significant meaning to her. At that checkup the doctors told her they thought they saw a hole in Quin s head and that it appeared to them his cerebrum wasn t connected. Quin was born completely healthy. Cory named him Quin with one n instead of two in recognition of that moment during pregnancy. She knew he will be all right and that he will be the mighty one. Blanding s father, Kevin, played football at NCAA Division II Glenville State (W.Va.) for current Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez. When offensive coordinator Robert Anae finished playing football, he returned home to Hawaii and served as the body model for the towering stature of the father of surfing, Duke Kahanamoku, a five-time Olympian. The statue, created by artist Jan Fisher, is right next to the famous Waikiki Beach. Anae was a graduate assistant at Hawaii at the time and the artist needed a model, a surfer that was tall, and he went looking for the tallest surfer on the North Shore. Walk-on first year Tristan Hillerich is one of four boys. His parents, Brent and Colleen, are proud parents of two sets of twins. Tristan has a twin brother, Bart, while the pair has a younger set of twin brothers, Quinn and Grady. Virginia has five players on its roster who are the sons of former Cavalier football players. Joey Blount (Tony Blount), Germane Crowell (Germane Crowell, Sr.), Mikey McDonald (Geoff McDonald), Matthew Merrick (Nick Merrick) and Andrew Yavinsky (Marc Yavinsky).
