1 REGULAR SEASON GAME #15 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (8-6) VS. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (9-5) SATURDAY, DECEMBER 24, :00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI TV: CBS Regional Coverage (KCTV-5 in Kansas City) Kevin Harlan and Randy Cross. NATIONAL RADIO: Sports USA Radio Network Eli Gold, Doug Plank and Rich Cellini. LOCAL RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP It s been awhile since a late-season Chiefs-Chargers match-up has had this much playoff significance, but there s clearly plenty on the line in this Christmas Eve clash at Arrowhead. Kansas City desperately needs to snap a two-game losing skid after dropping a decision at the N.Y. Giants (12/17). Meanwhile, San Diego (9-5) ended the Colts 13-game winning streak, getting a victory at Indianapolis (12/18). Simply put, the Chiefs and Chargers both need to win their final two games and have Pittsburgh lose one of its final two contests to have a shot at the AFC s final Wild Card spot. KC would also need San Diego to lose its season finale at home vs. Denver (12/31). Should the Chiefs and Steelers both finish 10-6, KC would win a tiebreaker with Pittsburgh based on a better conference record. Even if the Steelers and Chargers both comply with KC s needs, the Chiefs still face a daunting task when they close out the regular season vs. Cincinnati (1/1). Meanwhile, the Chargers need to finish 11-5 and have Pittsburgh go 10-6 since the Steelers claimed a win at San Diego (10/10). The Chiefs are 5-1 at Arrowhead in 2005 and are seeking to produce six or more home wins in a season for the 10th time since 90. Although San Diego snapped a seven-game road losing streak in Kansas City last season, Arrowhead has traditionally been a house of horrors for the Chargers. In their last eight trips to Kansas City, the Chargers have been outscored by a 232-to-107 margin and have been held to 21 points or less in six of those eight outings. However, San Diego does boast a solid 5-2 record on the road this season. Saturday s contest will also feature a showdown between two of the NFL s most dangerous running backs. Chiefs RB Larry Johnson owns a franchise-record seven consecutive 100-yard games. He has 1,418 rushing yards on the season and is on pace to finish the year with 1,621 yards which would break the current Chiefs single-season record of 1,615 ground yards set by RB Priest Holmes in Johnson s 16 rushing TDs are also the third-best total in the league. Meanwhile, San Diego RB LaDainian Tomlinson has 1,323 yards and 17 rushing TDs on the year, marking his fifth straight 1,000-yard campaign STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS CHARGERS Total Offense (2) (6) Rush Offense (4) (5) Pass Offense (8) (10) Total Defense (28) (15) Rush Defense (9) 74.9 (1) Pass Defense (31) (28) Turnover Ratio (11) -4 (20t) Pts./Game (7) 28.9 (3) Opp. Pts./Game (24) 19.2 (13) THE SERIES Kansas City holds a all-time advantage over San Diego in regular and postseason play. The announcement was made at the fall session of the league s annual meeting in Kansas City. The awarding of the Super Bowl was contingent on two key elements according to Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt. Arrowhead Stadium, which opened in 72 is one of the oldest stadiums in the NFL. Arrowhead must be renovated, including a climate-controlling Rolling Roof structure. The awarding of a Super Bowl would also require the city and the team to meet all the bid specifications laid out by the league. A renovated Arrowhead will feature the largest seating capacity of any modern Super Bowl site and the state-of-the-art Rolling Roof is unprecedented by the league and the roof structure will be an icon for Kansas City and the entire National Football League, Hunt said. I think it s a tribute to Lamar Hunt and a tribute, as the Commissioner said, to all of the owners who have visited Arrowhead over the last 30 years and specifically over the last 15, and the support this community has given the Chiefs, added Chiefs President Carl Peterson. 4 Two of the NFL s Top RBs Set to Square Off in Chiefs-Chargers Duel by Pete Moris The Chiefs Need Another Fast Start at Arrowhead The Chiefs defense has allowed just 10 points in the first quarter of six games at Arrowhead this season, including four first-quarter shutouts. In total, the Chiefs have not permitted any offensive points in the first quarter of 10 games. Getting off to another good start will be important against a San Diego squad that has outscored its opponents by a 57-point margin (86 to 29) in the first quarter this season, the best mark in the league. Teams holding a halftime lead have won 12 of the last 14 games in the Chiefs-Chargers series dating back to 97. The Chargers held a 21-3 halftime lead in a win vs. KC (10/30) earlier this year. SD currently ranks second in the NFL in first-half scoring. Only SEA (220) has scored more first-half points than SD (218) this season. Dating back to 2004, the Chargers are 16-3 (.842) in games when they score first and are 16-3 when leading at halftime over that same span. Since Marty Schottenheimer took over the Chargers in 2002, SD is just 5-22 when trailing at halftime. KC has led SD at halftime in eight straight meetings at Arrowhead, outscoring the Chargers by a 136-to-37 margin in the first half of those games. KC is 47-7 (.870) in regular season action at Arrowhead when leading at the half dating back to 95, including a 4-1 mark in The Chiefs Are Tough to Beat When Arrowhead Gets Cold Dating back to 95, the Chiefs own a 19-1 regular season record at Arrowhead during the month of December. In fact, the Chiefs have won 17 consecutive home contests in December, the longest such streak in the league since the AFL-NFL merger. Dating back to the 90 season, KC owns a 13-1 record against division foes at Arrowhead in December, including a streak of nine consecutive wins. Regardless of the site, the Chargers have lost six straight December games against the Chiefs. Their last win in such a contest was a victory at KC (12/17/89). The Chiefs are 3-1 all-time in games played on Christmas Eve. NFL S BEST DECEMBER NFL S LONGEST DECEMBER HOME HOME RECORDS, WINNING STREAKS, 1970-PRESENT 1. Regardless of the month, when Green plays well, the Chiefs are typically tough to beat at Arrowhead. KC owns a 13-1 record at Arrowhead when Green compiles a passer rating or better. Green has been particularly hot down the stretch, posting a rating in three of his last five starts. Green has completed 64.5% of his passes (89 of 138) over that five-game span and has averaged 9.51 yards per attempt, compiling a rating. San Diego is 13-2 in games when QB Drew Brees compiles a rating, including a 6-0 mark in TRENT GREEN S DECEMBER GAMES AT ARROWHEAD, Comps. Atts. KC is 41-4 (.911) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin in regular season play dating back to 95. KC owns a +23 turnover margin (52 takes/29 gives) over its last 24 regular season home games. The Chiefs are a combined +7 (17 takes/10 gives) in their last eight meetings with the Chargers at Arrowhead. San Diego owns a 12-1 (.923) record with a positive turnover ratio dating back to 2004, including a streak of 10 consecutive wins. The last time the Chargers lost a game with a positive turnover ratio was a setback at Atlanta (10/17/04) when San Diego was +1. San Diego is just 7-33 (.175) with a negative turnover mark dating back to 2000, including a 6-17 (.261) mark under Marty Schottenheimer. The Chargers have gone +3 (7 takes/4 gives) during their three-game winning streak vs. the Chiefs. Dante s Hall of Fame Numbers WR Dante Hall has 2,074 combined net yards on the season, marking the fourth straight year he has topped the 2,000-yard mark. St. Louis RB Marshall Faulk ( 98-01) is the only other player in NFL history to reach that 2,000-yard plateau in four straight seasons. Hall s 10,485 career combined net yards are the most in KC history. Johnson, Tomlinson Highlight Chiefs-Chargers Rushing Duel Chiefs RB Larry Johnson and Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson are arguably two of the NFL s most dangerous all-purpose performers. Johnson has been remarkably productive this season and his numbers are even more impressive when you consider that he has made just 10 NFL starts. The third-year Penn State product has produced a 100-yard rushing effort in eight of those 10 career starts. In those 10 starts, Johnson has 275 carries for 1,295 yards with 17 TDs, numbers that translate into an average of ypg. For comparison s sake, Tomlinson had 217 carries for 794 yards and nine TDs in his first 10 starts. In fact, after his first 16 starts as a rookie in 2001, Tomlinson only accumulated 1,236 rushing yards and 10 TDs, numbers that Johnson has beaten in his first 10 starts. The Chiefs and Chargers are both tough to stop when Johnson and Tomlinson are at their best. KC is 14-6 (.700) when it boasts a 100-yard rusher dating back to 2003, including an 8-3 (.727) mark when Johnson cracks the 100-yard plateau. The Chiefs have also won seven straight games at Arrowhead when boasting a 100-yard back. 7 THE LAST GAME Giants 27, Chiefs 17 December 17, 2005 Giants Stadium 78,625 KANSAS CITY N.Y. GIANTS The Chiefs fell to the New York Giants by a count at Giants Stadium. The contest featured a head-to-head rushing duel as RB Tiki Barber set a Giants single-game rushing record with 220 yards and a pair of rushing scores while Chiefs RB Larry Johnson managed 167 yards and TDs in a losing effort. Early on the game had all the makings of a defensive struggle. After a scoreless first quarter, the Chiefs defense forced a QB Eli Manning fumble, allowing KC to crack the scoreboard first with an 18-play drive that took 8:10 off the clock. The Chiefs settled for a K Lawrence Tynes 19-yard field goal after the Giants stuffed three KC rushing attempts from inside the three-yard line. The lead did not last long as Barber and the Giants bounced back. The All-Pro runner touched the ball five times on the eightplay drive as the Giants marched down the field. He capped the drive with an impressive 41-yard TD run, breaking several would-be tackles in the process as the Giants took a 7-3 lead. New York would add a 41-yard field goal in waning moments of the first half for a 10-3 lead at intermission. After trailing 10-3 at halftime, Kansas City quickly tied the score at on the opening possession of the second half. On the first play from scrimmage QB Trent Green found WR Samie Parker open over the middle for a 18-yard gain and then went back to his second-year receiver on the next snap, this time drawing an illegal contact penalty. Johnson capped the drive with four straight carries, including a 14-yard TD trot around the right end to knot the score. KC s defense thwarted a New York scoring drive on the next possession as CB Dexter McCleon picked off Manning. However, the Chiefs could not convert the takeaway into points, placing the ball back in Barber s hands. As he did all evening, he dented the Chiefs run defense, this time with a 55-yard carry to set up K Jay Feely s second field goal of the game. Minutes later Manning found WR Amani Toomer for a 31- yard touchdown strike. The score gave the Giants a lead early in the fourth quarter. However, the Chiefs offense would respond. Johnson carried the ball six times on KC s ensuing drive, but the big play was a defensive pass interference penalty that moved the ball down to the Giants one-yard line. Johnson finished the drive with a one-yard dive to cut the N.Y. Giants lead to with 8:29 remaining. Once again, Barber had an answer, this time putting a final dagger into the Chiefs with a 20-yard TD run to push the Giants advantage back to with 2:48 left to play. KC s final drive was halted when WR Eddie Kennison was stripped of the ball while trying to gain extra yardage, giving the ball back to the Giants who were able to run out the clock. GAME NOTES The Chiefs defense allowed an individual 100-yard rusher for the first time in 20 games, a mark which had stood as the longest active streak in the NFL. RB Larry Johnson registered his seventh straight 100-yard rushing game, extending the longest streak in Chiefs history. It was also his ninth career game with two or more rushing TDs. WR Dante Hall topped the 2,000-yard mark in combined net yards for the fourth consecutive year, joining St. Louis RB Marshall Faulk ( 98-01) as the only other player in NFL history to reach that 2,000-yard plateau in four straight seasons.
