RE: AHSCA Hall of Fame Nominees/Ballot 2014 DATE: November, 2013 AHSCA HALL OF FAME BALLOT The Executive Committee of the Arkansas High School Coaches Association is providing the membership the opportunity to participate in the selection of the 2014 Hall of Fame honorees. According to the AHSCA Hall of Fame Bylaws, the Executive Committee has chosen twenty-five (25) nominees from the master list for this ballot. Choose from the 25 nominees listed; use the ballot provided to list your choices in order of preference. Ballot due date is December 1, Members may submit names for consideration to be added to the master list. If you have candidate suggestions who meet the criteria, make your nomination and include a short biographical sketch/resume of your nominee with your ballot. REMEMBER: A name without a resume is NOT a nomination. CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY FOR INDUCTION 1. Significant contributions to the AHSCA. 2. Accomplishments/honors on the state level. 3. Accomplishments/honors on the national level. 4. Must be a minimum age of forty (40). 5. Must have coached at least 15 years at the high school level; except under extenuating circumstances. 6. MUST BE RETIRED FROM ACTIVE COACHING. Each future nomination MUST include a complete resume to be considered for inclusion on the AHSCA HALL OF FAME MASTER LIST. 2 2014 AHSCA HALL OF FAME NOMINEES < Name, Career Location > Warren Bane, Lockesburg Coach Bane served as head coach in basketball, track and golf for 26 years. His teams played in state semi-finals four times; were Regional Champions five times, District Champions for 12 years and runners-up three times. He took teams to 25 high school invitational tournament championships. His senior track boys were the 2000 District Champions. His golf team was 2004 district and Regional Champions. Bane served the AHSCA as president 96-97; on the Executive Committee for 12 years; was an All Star coach and Regional Coach of the Year twice. Overall record: Al Bolen, Junction City Coach Bolen won a national title, three state titles, and 17 district titles in his 19 seasons at Junction City during that time there was no classifications in baseball. His 385 wins is the third most in state history Dragons hold the record for most wins in a season with 37. From the Dragons won 40 consecutive games, second most in state history Dragons were winners of National Title with undefeated record of Dragons were recognized as the best high school program in the nation after a 6-year run with 3 state titles and an overall record of Bolen won five Coach of the Year awards. In 19 years as coach, Bolen s teams lost only 63 games. Eddie Boone, LR Central Coach Boone coached at Little Rock Central in the 1970s, 1980s and part of the 1990s. He won two state titles and one Overall Championship during his career. His first state boys basketball title came in 1972 at Menifee; his second in 1975 at Central. His 75 team also won the Overall Championship. Charles Brady, West Side/GF Coach Brady coached basketball for 37 years - 28 at West Side- Greers Ferry, three at Quitman, five at Enola, and one at Mount Vernon. His West Side boys won the 83 State Championship. His record at West Side is [averaged 25.5 wins per year]. Overall record: Ronnie Brown, Dardanelle Coach Brown led the Dardanelle senior boys for 13 years compiling a record. His teams qualified for the state tournament eight times, reaching the finals in 88. He led Leachville, Alpena, and Plainview boys and girls teams to the state tournaments. His overall coaching win percentage is 74%. Don Carnahan, Russellville Coach Carnahan coached boys and girls track and cross country winning 11 State Championships. His teams were also state runners-up 11 times. Carnahan was the 1994 head coach for the AR-OK All Star Meet. He served on the AAA Track and Field Advisory Committee for 30 years and has served as the director of the AAA Decathlon/Heptathlon since Coach Carnahan won five AHSCA Coach of the Year awards and five National Coach of the Year awards in track and cross country. Harry Denson, Crossett Coach Denson started the track program at Crossett and was instrumental in the building of the first track at Crossett. For seven years his teams were either first or second in the state. In the early 60 s, Coach Denson took the Crossett team to the Tiger Relays and won, breaking Central High s long winning streak. He had one undefeated winning season at Crossett. As a college coach, he coached 16 All Americans, two national champions and was inducted into the Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame, 2003.
3 Bro Erwin, Beebe Bro Erwin coached football, basketball and track at Beebe for 23 years while teaching history. He took nine basketball teams to state tournaments four to the finals or semi-finals. His 1941 team won the State Championship. He produced several All Conference college athletes and three All Americans. In 23 years of coaching track, his teams won 17 district track meets. His 1947 team placed first in every event at the district track meet. Erwin s football teams won seven District Championships in 23 years. From , Bro served as Superintendent of Beebe Schools. Glyndon Franklin, Nevada County Coach Franklin coached basketball, track and baseball for 33 years at Cale and Nevada County. Franklin s record at Cale was His girls basketball team won the 92 State Championship; his teams made 10+ trips to state tournaments. He was named Coach of the Year 25 times, and won multiple regional and tournament championships. One year his basketball team went undefeated and won the State Championship. Franklin teams were basketball overall runner-up and won two track State Championships. Numerous times he wib Outstanding Coach awards and was the All Star senior girls coach nominee. Ron Gean, West Memphis Coach Gean coached basketball at Turrell and West Memphis for 18 years. He had 16 conference championships and 1 State Championship. Morgan Gilbert, Tuckerman Morgan Gilbert coached 40 years out of total 49 years in coaching at Tuckerman. His basketball teams won 21 District Championships and played in 38 state playoffs. Gilbert s baseball teams won 27 District Championships and made state playoffs 39 times, winning state in 92. Coach Gilbert has 1,030 wins in baseball which gives him the title of the coach with the most wins in Arkansas history. With 1,077 senior boys basketball wins, Gilbert is the only coach in the nation with 1,000 wins in both baseball and basketball. Clinton Gore, Osceola Coach Gore had over 200 wins as head football coach at Paragould, Helena- West Helena, Forrest City, Osceola and Melbourne. He started the football program at Melbourne. The 85 Forrest City team went 10-1 before losing to Northside in the state playoffs. Forrest City finished in his tenure. His Osceola teams played for the class 4A championship four straight years, winning titles in 95 and 97. Gore was named Conference Coach of the Year 12 times and served on the AHSCA All Star staff three times. Lee Hardman, Dollarway During his tenure as head coach, Lee Hardman won four state football championships at Dollarway and nine conference championships. Hardman took Dollarway to the playoffs 10 out of 11 years. His teams had a 51-game winning streak (the state s best at the time) and won 63 of its last 64 games while he was head coach. He was the winningest football coach at Dollarway. He was the KARK Friday Night Flights Coach of the Year in 91 and named AAA Coach of the Year three times. The Arkansas Gazette named him Boys Coach of the Year and he was the AAA Outstanding Football Coach in Overall record: Leo Johnson, Bradley Coach Johnson s Bradley girls basketball team won State Championships in 62, 66, 67, and 68. They lost the championship in 65 by only one point; prior to that loss they had won 78 consecutive games. At graduation in 69, these players had lost only that game in six years. Johnson s Bradley teams won the Joe T. Robinson Tournament four consecutive years. His Stephens teams were undefeated for two years. At their invitation, he took this team to demonstrate at the Oklahoma Coaches Clinic. Johnson helped start girls basketball camps in Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma and served on the committee which began the girls All Star games in Arkansas.
4 Darrell Jones, Deer Coach Jones was AD and coach for 20+ years at Jasper, Deer and Lead Hill schools. At Deer he developed and insured that every student who should be in sports had the opportunity to play. His teams were District Champions 19 times and Conference Champions or Co- Champions 18 times. Jones was voted Outstanding Coach or All Star Coach 16 times. His record was 1,022 wins and 446 losses. Jones believed in developing talent found in regular PE classes to accent naturally talented athletes and encouraging students to play. Robert Manson, Cotton Plant Coach Manson coached at Brinkley 14 years - boys basketball teams earned Conference Runner-up spots three times; Conference Champions twice and Regional Champions three times. Manson was 2A 4 Coach of Year twice and three of his athletes played in the All Star basketball game. At Brinkley, his boys and girls track teams were Conference Champions four times and he was chosen Coach of the Year once. Coaching nine seasons at White, Phillips County, his teams were Mid-Arkansas Champions three times; Conference Champions twice; Region Runner- Up twice and State Runner-Up twice. Manson was basketball Coach of Year two times; Outstanding Coach of the Year once and Phillips County Teacher of the Year once. Manson s ten seasons at Cotton Plant produced basketball Conference Champs once; Region Runner-Up once; Coach of the Year four times and one Outstanding Coach honors. Cotton Plant boys and girls track teams won Conference/District Champs twelve times; District Runner-Up once; State Runner-Up three times. They were State Champs two times. Throughout his 35 year coaching career, Manson aimed to inspire and motivate by being a role model for his student-athletes. Lendall Martin, Wickes Coach Martin coached a total of 26 years, 25 as a head coach, 13 of those at Wickes. He coached teams to 18 District Championships, four Regional championships and five reached the state tournament. His 90 Wicks boys team was State Runner-Up; his 98 Van-Cove girls team State Runner-Up. Martin was elected All Star coach in He served on the AHSCA Girls All Star Committee for five years. Martin coached over 35 former players who became basketball coaches, including his four sons. His overall record 702 wins and 338 losses 67.5% wins. Ruby J Morrow, Marvell For 39 years Coach Morrow was the Marvell volleyball, track and basketball head coach while she taught PE; was the Department Chair; and served on the School Improvement Team and Data Team. Morrow specialized in developing strategies for teachers to handle discipline problems. Morrow s teams were conference champions in volleyball three times; basketball three times and in track 10 times. Marvell s track team was state runner-up two times and won the State Championship in 83. Morrow was the District Coach of the Year 16 times in three different sports. Morrow develop training programs for teenagers who are physically and mentally challenged. Dr. Robert Paynter, Paragould After coaching 14 years at University High, Tennessee, and 9 years at University of Tennessee at Martin, Dr. Paynter became the head basketball coach at Paragould. In 25 years, he coached teams to 12 state tournament berths, seven regionals, and five went on to the state quarterfinals. He only had 4 losing seasons in 25 years; Dr. Paynter s record was at Paragould. In 2004 when he retired from coaching his overall coaching record was ; he was only the 15 th boys-only coach in the county to win more than 900 games. According to the AAA record book, Doc is the 7 th winningest coach in the state and the first in boys only. He won the Lowell Manning Coach of the Year award in 2004 and was named the NFHS Coach of the Year. Doc was most concerned about the positive effect I was having one those boys lives.
5 James Pennington, Emerson Coach Pennington coached basketball, boys/girls track and tennis, even football, golf and baseball in his career. His boys track teams won 10 State Championships, girls track won three State Championships. He had one State Runner-up tennis team. Pennington s 96 boys basketball team was State Runner-up and the 2001 team was the State Champions. Pennington was the District Outstanding Coach 15 times and District All Star Coach nominee 15 times. He served on the AHSCA Executive Committee 10 years and as President He was selected the AHSCA Outstanding Track Coach 93; the Lowell Manning Award 95; AHSCA Outstanding Girls Tennis Coach 98; All Star Head coach 2001 and Distinguished Service Award Pennington has been an AHSCA Clinic speaker in 94 and His overall senior boys basketball record is Kenneth Rippy, Booneville Coach Rippy led Booneville to eight conference titles, 13 playoff appearances, and 26 playoff wins. Rippy was a five-time All Star coach, twice as head coach. His 2000 football team was State Champions. Coach Rippy strived to raise his players to be men and instill a sense of tradition in the young people of Booneville. His career coaching record of Doug Scheel, Booneville Coach Scheel coached for 29 years. He served as an All Star coach five times; an Outstanding Football Coach 12 times; and was a Dream Team Coach of the Year once. His teams were cross country state runner ups three times. His soccer teans made two state playoff appearances and won a conference championship. His 86 football team was State Champions. He had 18 teams reach the playoffs five in finals, five in semi-finals; and 12 win conference championships. Sheel s football record in 29 years is Linda Thomas, Eudora Coach Thomas was the girls basketball coach for 17 years at Eudora; girls track for 11 years; she coached football for 1 year. District 8-AA Round Robin Champion, Regional Champion, and State Runner-up 80-81; District 8-AA Champion, Round Robin Champion, Regional Champion, and AA State Champion 81-82; East All-Star Girls Basketball Coaching Staff 82; 8-AA District Runner-Up and Regional Runner-up 84-85; District Runner-up, 8-AA District Round Robin Co- Champions, and Regional Runner-up Gazette s 82 Coach of the Year Award; National Sports News Service 82 44th ranked Senior Girls basketball team in the country; District 8-AA Senior Girls Coach of the Year; District 8-AA Senior Girls Coach of the Year; District 8-AA Senior Girls Coach of the Year; District 8-AA Senior Girls All-Star Coach of the Year Joe Treat, Bryant Coach Treat coached Bryant boys basketball for 20 years. His teams won one State Championship; finished second another year; played in 12 state tournaments and played in 11 conference championships. Treat coached the McDonald s All American West team in 83 in Atlanta and won. Eight former players are basketball coaches in Arkansas. Ron Triplett, Wynne Coach Triplett is most proud of the 38 girls and 7 boys he coached who received college scholarships following their high school careers. He coached the first Parade All American girls basketball player from Arkansas in 76-77; two State MVP girls basketball; and five Carnation All American basketball girls. Triplett started girls basketball in Piggott 75 and Wynne 77. His basketball teams won girls State Championships three times, were runner-up twice and won 14 District Championships. He coached golf to one State Championship and three district titles; track to two State Championships, one runner-up and six district titles. His volleyball and softball teams each won a district title. Triplett served as Head All Star coach three times; was Outstanding Girls Basketball Coach twice and was an AHSCA Coaching Clinic speaker twice. His overall basketball records are boys: and girls:
