The divisions are now the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). FCS is the only Division I football subdivision to host a NCAA sponsored national championship. The FBS formerly Division I A competes for the Bowl Championship Series national championship. The other difference? Teams that play at the FCS level can offer a maximum of 63 scholarships compared to the FBS 85 scholarship limit. Richmond won the 2008 FCS title. FCS Playoff expansion In April 2008, the NCAA Board of Directors approved a new budget for the Division I Football Championship, which permitted the postseason bracket to expand from 16 to 20 teams beginning with the 2010 season. It marks the first expansion since the playoff field grew from 12 to 16 teams in In 2010, automatic bids will climb for 8 to 10 while the at-large berths also will rise from 8 to nd ovc season This is the 62nd season of Ohio Valley Conference football. Fourteen teams have won or shared the league s football title, led by Eastern Kentucky, winner of 20 outright or shared championships. Austin Peay s only title came in rd SEASON This is the 73rd season of football competition for the Governors. APSU played its 700th game in 2007 and will play its 736th game, Saturday. They enter the game with a record. third YEAR BACK IN OVC This is Austin Peay s third year back in the Ohio Valley Conference. Members of the OVC from 1963 to 1996, Austin Peay, citing financial concerns, became a non-scholarship program in The Governors then joined the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League from In Fall 2004, then-apsu President Sherry Hoppe announced Austin Peay would investigate returning to scholarship football. Six months later it was announced APSU would return to scholarship football in 2006 while rejoining the OVC in APSU posted a 3-8 record in 2006 in its return to scholarship football before recording a 7-4 record in 2007, including a 5-3 mark in the OVC. APSU slipped back to 2-9 overall and 2-6 in the OVC a year ago. LONG TIME BETWEEN OVC GAMES When Austin Peay played Tennessee State, Sept. 15, 2007, it was the Governors first Ohio Valley Conference game since the 1996 season finale, a 55 24, Nov. 23, victory against Tennessee-Martin. That was a span of 3,892 days between OVC contests. govs picked seventh Austin Peay was picked to finish in a tie for seventh place in the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll of league head coaches and sports information directors. Five teams received first-place votes but it was defending champ Eastern Kentucky earning the honors as the league s first-place choice with 105 points (10 first-place votes) followed by UT Martin (four first-place votes/92 points) and Eastern Illinois (two second-place votes/89 points). Tennessee State (one first-place vote/74 points) was fourth followed by Murray State (one first-place vote/61 votes), Tennessee Tech (35) and Austin Peay (33) and Southeast Missouri (33). Due to a postseason ban by the NCAA (occasion-three historic penalty of the Academic Progress Rate), in accordance with OVC by-laws Jacksonville State is not eligible for the OVC Championship this season. The Gamecocks will still play a full conference schedule with wins and losses counting and will be eligible to be ranked in national polls. IN-STATE RIVALRIES HAVE MEANING Representatives from the Nashville Sports Council and the Ohio Valley Conference announced in 2007 the creation of the Sergeant York Trophy, which goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four OVC member schools located in the state of Tennessee Austin Peay, Tennessee-Martin, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech. The award is only the second traveling trophy involving more than two teams in college sports. The other is the Commander-in-Chief s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since In 2008, APSU and Tennessee State tied for the Sgt. York Trophy a year ago with 2-1 records, respectively. However, TSU was awarded the trophy because they beat the Governors head to head. TSU (3-0) also won it in

3 govs TO GET TASTE OF FBS beginning in 2010 Austin Peay will be stepping up and out of FCS competition in In doing so, the Governors will be renewing a former Ohio Valley Conference rivalry. APSU will play longtime rival Middle Tennessee during the season s second week, although a date has not been set. Originally, the two teams were set to play Sept. 2 in Murfreesboro, but now the Blue Raiders will play Minnesota to open the season. Austin Peay has not played a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team since the Governors lost at Troy, 41-3, in the 2002 season. The Govs will wear the red home jerseys with white pants. The visiting white jersey will be reversed from the red ones and will be worn with red pants. AARP CARDS Austin Peay enters 2009 with 26 seniors on its roster. That number is believed to be the most in Governors history. Not since 1980, when 21 seniors reported to camp, has an Austin Peay team reported to camp with at least 20 seniors. FIRST SCHOLARSHIP CLASS NOW SENIORS APSU returned to scholarship football in Now that first scholarship class enters its senior season. Fifteen of the original 24 signing class are still with the APSU program. LAST OF THE MOHICANS Not only does 2009 mark the senior season for the original scholarship class in APSU s return to scholarship football, but it represents closure of the non-scholarship era as well. In fact, nine Governors, recruited in 2005 as non-scholarship performers, will call 2009 their last: offensive guard Justin Cunningham, defensive back Noy Garrett, cornerback Marvis Malone, wide receiver Daniel Lambert, linebacker/safetydaniel Swenson, defensive end Chris Newell, quarterback Gary Orr, defensive tackle Phillip Sparn and offensive guard Stanley Brooks. All nine were redshirted in 2005 and transitioned to the scholarship era. Most of that group eventually earned scholarships. TENNESSEE PRIDE Of the 88-man roster, 79 of the Governors are from Tennessee. CLARKSVILLE CONNECTION Of the 79 Tennessee Governors, 14 come from hometown Clarksville. In fact, nine Clarksville Govs are listed on the two-deep Jeff Lyle at running back, Kelvin Little at guard, Brad Williams at tight end, Chris Haynes at linebacker, Amius Smith at weak safety, Daniel Swenson at weak safety, Chris Newell at defensive end, kicker Isaac Ziolkowski and Benton Jackson at long snapper. govs IN OVC OPENERS This will be Austin Peay s 37th Ohio Valley Conference season, the third in its second tenure in the league. Coming off the bench for an injured Theo Townsend, he rushed 22 times for 185 yards. Candeto is one of just 26 FBS quarterback to have rushed and passed for 1,000 or more yards, respectively, in a single season HOLT BOLTS When APSU junior running back Terrence Holt rushed for 152 yards against Newberry, it included a 75-yard TD scamper that broke open the tight game. It represented APSU s longest TD rush since Chris Fletcher ran 74 yards against Valparaiso in NETTING A KICKING GAME Stephen Stansell has created a problem. The freshman kicker has shown such a strong leg in practice, APSU has been forced to put a net over the scoreboard/jumbotron. The kicking game, both placekicking and kickoffs, was a problem for APSU a year ago. The Athens native has taken over all the placekicking duties after no fewer than three kickers were used by APSU a year ago. REVAMPED DEFENSIVE STAff When Granville Eastman was forced to step away from his job as defensive coordinator last fall because of immigration issues, a silver lining developed late in the season. APSU hired, on a temporary basis, former Tennessee Titans defensive back Dainon Sidney, who played for APSU head coach Rick Christophel at UAB, to substitute for Eastman. It worked out so well that Christophel has kept Sidney, who had been working in private business in Nashville, as secondary coach. Eastman, who formerly coached the secondary, now is handling the linebackers in addition to his coordinator s duties. Ryan Taylor, who was hired a year ago as linebackers coach, has moved up front to the defensive line coach s position, bringing his enegertic personality to that area. Additionally, former Ohio State student assistant Chad Creamer is the graduate assistant. OFFENSIVE STAFF RETURNS INTACT Austin Peay s offensive staff returns intact for Assistant head coach Steve Haywood returns for his 10th season on staff, much of it as offensive line coach. In addition, Marcus Gildersleeve again will be coaching the wide receivers for his fourth season while Josh Roberts is in his fourth season working with the running backs. Former Navy star Craig Candeto is coaching the quarterbacks as a graduate assistant. NEW SCHEME The Govs are unveiling a new defensive scheme in After playing a traditional 4-3 for much of the last decade, APSU head coach Rick Christophel and defensive coordinator Granville Eastman elected to take advantage of the Govs quickness by utilizing a scheme. Up front, the defensive is the same. However, at the second level, APSU play just two linebackers. In the secondary now will feature two cornerbacks and three safeties a free safety, a strong safety and a weakside safety
