Mount Union is 16-5 overall and 12-2 in the OAC. THE COACHES: Marietta s Jon VanderWal, a 2001 graduate of Albion, is in his eighth year as the head coach of the Pioneers. VanderWal is at Marietta. Mike Fuline, a 1998 Kent State University graduate, is in his fourth season coaching the Purple Raiders. Fuline is at Mount Union. SERIES NOTES: This is the 113th meeting between the two schools on the hardwood. The teams first met in with Mount Union winning Mount Union leads the all-time series Marietta has won eight of the last 10 meetings including this season s first meeting in Marietta, but Mount Union swept the season series last year winning in Alliance and in Marietta. LAST MEETING: Mount Union nearly pulled off the upset as the Purple Raiders led the game for nearly 30 minutes. The Purple Raiders were on fire in the opening period shooting over 60% from the floor until the final few minutes. Senior Garrett Stephenson kept the Pioneers in the game with 15 first half points. The Pioneers trailed by one, 42-41, at the break before coming back to win Stephenson and Keith Richardson each scored 17 points to lead the Pioneers. DeAllen Jackson and Nate Jacubec led the Purple Raiders with 19 and 18 points, respectively. SCOUTING THE PIONEERS: Currently, Marietta is ranked 43rd in the OAC in scoring offense (82.5 ppg) and 1st in scoring defense (68.1 ppg). Garrett Stephenson is the Pioneers leading scorer averaging 13.0 ppg and ranks 3rd in the OAC in rebounding averaging 7.2 rpg. RaNeal Ewing is averaging 11.8 ppg and is shooting 42.4% from three-point range. Luis Garcia is averaging 10.7 ppg and ranks 4th in the OAC in free throw shooting at 87.3%. Eddy Grenert is 2nd in the OAC in rebounding averaging 8.3 rpg. The Pioneers won the final 16 games of the season and the first 10 games of OAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior post player Garrett Stephenson was named the OAC Player of the Week after averaging 17.0 points and 7.5 rebounds last week. He notched his third doubledouble of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds against Capital. He followed that up with 14 points in the win over Wilmington. LONG RANGE BOMBERS: Who shoots the last second threepointer? That s a tough question for opposing defenses as 15 different Pioneers have sank three-pointers this season including post players Garrett Stephenson, Eddy Grenert, Andy Stegman, Jack Thome and A.J.
