1 AZUSA PACIFIC FOOTBALL GAME NOTES Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018 Glendora, Calif. Media: ESPN 3 #24 Azusa Pacific (4-1, 2-0 GNAC) vs. #25 Central Washington (3-2, 3-0 GNAC) Chasing History: Head coach Victor Santa Cruz (79-57, 13 th season) continues his pursuit of the program s all-time wins record, and he is now just two victories behind Jim Milhon ( ), who coached the Cougars from Since the start of the the program s active Division II membership in 2014, the Cougars are (.750) overall, including 24-7 (.774) in conference games. Last Week: After a narrow defeat to FCS opponent North Alabama on Sept. 22, the Cougars shook off a slow start back at home against GNAC rival Humboldt State before rallying for a victory over the Lumberjacks. APU turned the ball over four times in the first 10 minutes, but an outstanding defensive effort limited Humboldt State to only seven points after that early hiccup. The Cougars ran up 213 yards on the ground, surpassing the 200-yard mark in team rushing for the third time this season. Sophomore QB Tyrone Williams threw for 227 yards and 2 TDs while adding 71 rushing yards and a score. His most frequent target was sophomore WR Brandon Jackson, who had 13 receptions on the night for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns. Carr In The Fast Lane: Junior WR Weston Carr was held without a catch last week, but still comes into this evening s game with a chance to claim one of the program s longest-standing records. Carr has 158 career receptions (3 rd most in program history) for 2,822 yards, which is just two yards shy of Paul Nath s record for career receiving yards. He also has a school-record 31 receiving TDs (see chart on page 3). Last season, Carr ranked second in all of Division II with an APU single-season record 1,458 receiving yards, hauling in 86 receptions including 15 touchdowns. Claws Out On D: The Cougar defense was forced on the back heel early against Humboldt State, with the Lumberjacks first three possessions all starting in Cougar territory, and the fourth just shy of midfield. The Cougars only allowed 7 points on those four drives, and went on to hold Humboldt State to 189 yards of total offense on the night while registering a season-best 9 sacks to go with an interception and a blocked field goal. Senior LB Aaron Berry had a team-high 8 tackles, giving him 46 on the season, while Willie Fair had 1.5 sacks, giving him 3.5 on the year, part of his 8.5 tackles for loss. DB Quentin Frazier added an interception with just over a minute remaining to seal the win, the first turnover the Cougars had forced in nearly 8 quarters. Up Next: Azusa Pacific heads back out on the road for the next two games, with its annual visit north of the border to Simon Fraser in Canada coming up on Oct. 13 before a crucial non-conference trip to No. 12-ranked Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 20.

Media: ESPN 3 #24 Azusa Pacific (4-1, 2-0 GNAC) vs. #25 Central Washington (3-2, 3-0 GNAC) About The Wildcats: Central Washington is the defending conference champion and enter tonight s contest having won 13 consecutive games against GNAC opposition. Central Washington has been nationally-ranked throughout this season, and was #8 in the national poll prior to last Saturday s upset loss to West Texas A&M. Like the Cougars, the Wildcats have beaten the other three GNAC schools and hosted West Texas A&M in non-conference play as well as visiting an FCS opponent. Central Washington opened the season with a loss at Eastern Washington, which was tied for 4 th in this week s FCS national poll. Wildcats On Offense: Central Washington has been the most prolific offense in the conference through the first half of the season, averaging 485 yards of offense and just over 40 points per game thus far. Senior QB Reilly Hennessey had a breakout game against West Texas A&M, throwing for 436 yards and 3 touchdowns in a losing effort. Hennessey has thrown for 1,250 yards and 9 touchdowns on the season, while adding in 162 yards and 4 TDs on the ground. A pair of running backs have split the carries for the Wildcats, with sophomore Michael Roots (375 yards, 2 TDs) and senior Cedric Cooper (349 yards, 2 TDs) proving equally effective. Wildcats On Defense: Junior DB Donte Hamilton is the Wildcats leading tackler with 41 stops through 5 games. The Wildcats are excellent at wreaking havoc behind the line of scrimmage, accounting for 40 tackles for loss this season (8 per game), with linebackers Uli Ma ae and Tevin Gray each accounting for 5, while sophomore DL Maxwell Nauer has 4.5 of his own. Throw in 14 pass breakups and 16 quarterback hurries and it s no surprise that Central Washington has allowed a GNAC-low passing yards per game. Up Next: The Wildcats will return home to Ellensburg next week for its longest-standing GNAC rivalry, hosting Western Oregon in the first half of a two-game home stand that also includes a visit from Simon Fraser on Oct. 20.

Media: ESPN 3 #24 Azusa Pacific (4-1, 2-0 GNAC) vs. #25 Central Washington (3-2, 3-0 GNAC) Head To Head: Central Washington and Azusa Pacific are meeting for the 16 th time tonight, with the Wildcats leading the series, 9-6. But some of the Cougars most memorable wins have come against Central Washington over the years, including a victory in the 1998 NAIA Quarterfinals, a win which helped propel the Cougars to their first ever national championship. In 2012, Azusa Pacific defeated Central Washington in its homecoming game, the program s first win as a member of the GNAC. Central Washington has won two of its last three visits to Citrus Stadium, with both 2015 and 2017 victories decided on the final play. In between those meetings, the Cougars were the last team to defeat the Wildcats in conference play, with a 44-7 win on October 29, 2016, to clinch the conference title. Last Meeting: Central Washington 34, Azusa Pacific 23 (October 28, 2017, at Ellensburg, Wash.) Before a national audience on ESPN 3, the eighth-ranked Wildcats broke open what was a game midway through the third quarter with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to improve to 9-0 on the season. Reilly Hennessey threw for 264 yards and 2 TDs while also adding 60 yards and a score rushing, taking advantage of a critical interception by Max McIntosh early in the final frame. Andrew Elffers threw for 200 yards and ran for 57 to lead the Cougars offensively. Home Sweet Home: Since making Citrus Stadium its permanent home field in 2010, Azusa Pacific is (.778) at home.
