5 Individual Drills Ball Handling Activities (Individual) (Use both hands!): 1. Wrap Around: standing, work ball around your waist transferring from one hand to the other in a clockwise direction. Variations: change direction and change levels. a) Single Leg Circle b) Double Leg Circle c) Around the Head d) Tap to both hands 2. Figure 8 Weave: standing, work ball in between legs starting from the front and moving to the back. Reverse. 3. Blur: start holding ball in between legs--one hand in front, the other hand behind. Switch hand positions continuously. Try to keep head up. Don t look at ball. 4. Suicide: standing, bounce ball between legs moving hands from front to back. 5. Machine Gun: dribble ball between legs moving hands from front to back. 6. Blind Toss: toss ball over the shoulder and catch behind your back. Reverse. 7. Follow the leader dribbling: leader dribbles the ball in various stationary positions such as standing, kneeling, sitting down, lying down, etc. 8. Slam: Slam ball from one hand to the other. 9. Banana: Squeeze ball from one hand to the other and move hand vertically up and down while doing it. 10. Tap: Tap ball from one hand to the other and move hands vertically up and down while doing it. Advanced Drills 11. Double: Dribble a ball in each hand. Vary the direction of each ball. 12. Catch and dribble: Dribble a ball with one hand while throwing a bean bag up and down in the other hand. 6 Offensive Concepts Triple Threat Position (pass, dribble, or shoot) Feet shoulder width apart, slightly staggered weight evenly distributed on balls of feet knees bent head up hold ball at stomach height with both hands Principles of Attack Penetration Ball movement Spacing Mobility and movement Offensive options Shoot Drive to basket Pass to open player or a player cutting to hoop DON T make the long diagonal pass to a covered player Give n Go A play in which the ball handler passes to a teammate, then breaks past a defender to receive a return pass in the clear. Screen and Roll A play in which a player without the ball takes a stationary position in back, to the side, or in front of a defensive player in order to momentarily obstruct the defender s path and free the ball handler or another teammate in motion. The screener, then moves in the direction of the ball handler. Page 6

7 Offensive Practice Drills Protect the Ball Player A establishes a pivot foot. They keep the ball in two hands and move the ball in clockwise and counterclockwise movements outside the knees. The ball should be moved from side to side but when sweeping across the body the ball should be kept over the top or be swept below the knees. Player B holds a ball at arm s length at player A s stomach. Player A must make sure their ball does not touch player B s ball. Stationary Lay-ups--Right and Left Player A stands in a position to take 1 step towards the basket without dribbling the ball. Player D stands on the opposite side and will rebound. Switch positions after completion. Take time to start the ball on both sides. Diagram: D A E F B C Moving Lay-ups--Right and Left Player A stands in a position to dribble for a lay-up. 8 Give and Go--Right and Left Start at the foul line and foul line extended. Player A passes ball to Player B and cuts to the hoop. B receives pass from A and then immediately passes ball back to A cutting to the basket. Lead the player with the pass. B then moves in for the rebound. Switch positions. Switch to other side of hoop eventually. Can add a defender. Diagram: B D F A C E Pressure Lay-ups--Right, Left, Center, Baseline, Opposite Player A starts with ball at foul line extended. Player B starts about 5 feet back. As soon as A moves towards the hoop, B chases and tries to prevent A from scoring. Stress no fouls!! Switch positions. Vary starting locations and switch sides. 9 Rebound/Outlet Player A faces wall and tosses ball up on wall and then jumps and rebounds. A lands, pivots and outlets ball to partner with a 2 hand overhead pass. B calls outlet. Switch positions. Diagram: Wall B D A C Fast Break Outlet Same drill as above, except Player A fills outside lane to receive a pass back from Player B after the original outlet pass. Switch positions after passing. Diagram: Wall F E C F E Fast Break outlet to 3 on 2 Player A rebounds the ball and passes to the outlet immediately. Three offensive players then push to make a basket on the opposite hoop against 2 defenders. Page 9

10 Ball Movement Games Hoop Ball 2 teams of 4 players move the ball toward the goal by passing (and dribbling) the ball. The goal can consist of a hoop with a teammate standing in it. A point is scored when the person standing in the hoop catches a pass from one of their teammates without stepping outside of the hoop. No other player is allowed to step on or in the hoop or jump over it. Replace the person in the hoop with the person who passed them the ball. Use your badminton courts to set up mini courts. Full badminton court Cross Court Good for 4 on 4 Good for 3 on 3 Keep Away--2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4 Teams attempt to keep the ball away from the other team. Passes must be successfully caught. Each time a team reaches a set number, eg. 7 consecutive passes they score a point. If the pass is not successfully caught, then the ball goes over to the other team. Again, utilize the badminton court configurations to keep your entire class active. Variation: Player with ball cannot move. Bucket ball--3 on 3, 4 on 4 Teams are not allowed to dribble the ball. Instead of shooting the ball at the basket, they shoot at a teammate holding a bucket on a chair. Utilize the low height by allowing students to dunk. Use same rules as Keep Away and Hoop Ball. Utilize the badminton court configurations to keep your entire class active. Page 10

11 Teaching Defense Individual Stance for Defensive Slide feet shoulder width apart weight on balls of feet feet always moving (sliding, not crossing) knees bent (low centre of gravity) back straight body balanced 1 arm denies dribble-drive 1 arm in passing lane head up eyes focus on torso of offensive player force offensive player to weak side Basic Help Defense Ball Ball Ball Ball General Principles Pressure on the ball (force drive to weak hand) 1 pass away--deny pass first by putting arm in passing lane, help on ball drive 2 passes away--sag off your player and help in the key Always keep an eye on your check and the ball Don t allow baseline drives, no help Page 11

12 Defensive Drills Key slide Assume a defensive stance in the center of the key. Slide back and forth touching the outside of the lane without crossing feet. Work on quickness and change of direction. Players should be able to complete 7 slides across in the key. Reaction Coach leads group. Players react to the direction and movement of the coach. Have the team spread out at least arm's width apart. Assume a defensive stance, head up. When you hold the ball on your right, have them shuffle that direction. Hold it to the left, they go that way. Hold it low, they shuffle backwards. Over your head they run forward. Mix it up so they have to watch you and react. Hand on ball Defensive player shadows the ball movement of the offensive player with their hand. This blocks the passing lane. 5 seconds and switch. Defensive Posture Player A dribbles the ball down a corridor or lane. Player B works on shuffling/sliding to prevent player A from advancing. Player B needs to keep ball in passing lane and ball near ball to sweep ball away. Player A needs to keep arm bar up and switch directions at the sides of the lane. Zig-Zag Same as above except that have player B put their hands behind their back, forcing them to use their feet and not reach. Have the offensive player work them back and forth down the floor. Have the defensive player try to move their feet fast enough that they force the dribbler to change directions. Team Drills Help! Groups of 4, 3 on defense, 1 on offense. Offense tries to drive past defender If defender is beat, they call out Help and their teammate must step in to block off the drive. Vary offensive starting point, eg. wing, baseline, top of key Page 12

13 Shell Drill Use the basic Help Defense positions. Have the offense pass the ball around the court and the defense needs to adjust to the correct positions based on the ball location as fast as possible. Box Out/Rebounding establish inside position pivot so that you are facing the basket make contact with your opponent with your butt make yourself as wide as possible keep your elbows out and your hands up ready to rebound the ball jump toward the ball when it comes off the rim rip it down aggressively with two hands keep the ball high over your head and hold on tight pivot and look for a guard to pass the ball to use a two-hand overhead pass for outlet Example positioning for rebounds Page 13

14 Rebounding Drills Rebound Line Players are with partners, 1 on offence, 1 on defence. Form 2 lines so the offensive players look at you. Coach stands behind the defence. Defence faces the offense. Coach calls out shot and point to a direction. Offensive players move in that direction. Defence must box out. Change directions. Place a ball in the centre of the circle. Offence must get the ball, defence must box out for 3 secs. 15 Position 3 teammates forming a defensive "rebounding triangle" close to the basket -- 1 in front of the rim, and 1 on either side with their backs to the basket. Shoot the ball at the basket and have them practice pivoting into rebounding position facing the basket, jumping up to meet the ball, ripping it down and pivoting to throw an outlet pass. Triangle Rebound Offense and defense Repeat the above drills, this time with three players on offense and three on defense. Continue until the offense scores or the defense controls the rebound and makes an outlet pass. Page 15
