2 Honors and Awards Junior guard Shayla Johnson was named to the Atlantic 10 all-defensive Team. Johnson leads the team and is third in the Atlantic 10 in steals per game with She also ranks among the conference leaders in scoring with 11.4 points per contest. Fellow junior Denise King was named a third-team Philadelphia Sports Connection all-atlantic 10 performer while freshman Tanya Rhodes earned Philadelphia Sports Connection all-rookie accolades. King leads the team and is 13th in the conference in scoring with 13.3 points and is among the A-10 leaders in assists (6th/4.08), free throw % (3rd/.800), steals (11th/1.62), 3-pt. FG made (14th/1.35) and assist/ turnover ratio (14th/0.98). Rhodes was one of only two players on the team to appear in all-27 games and has added 7.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while her 2.15 steals per game rank her fifth in the Atlantic 10. The Rams are the sixth-ranked scoring defense in the Atlantic 10, allowing just 61.4 points per game while their steals per game rank them second in the conference. Individually, Shayla Johnson (3rd/2.26), Tanya Rhodes (5th/2.15) and Denise King (11th/1.62) rank among the top-15 in the conference in steals per game. Protecting The Ball Rhode Island has averaged 19.4 turnovers per game while forcing opponents to 22.2 per contest, a turnover margin that ranks the team second in the Atlantic 10. Attendance Soars In the Rams win against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 16th, 2003, the largest crowd ever to witness a women s basketball game in Kingston, R.I., was on hand. The crowd was part of the Rhode To Success Fieldtrip that drew elementary and middle school children from the State of Rhode Island. The previous mark was 3,385 against Connecticut during the 1998 season. In 12 games this season, the Rams have drawn 13,777 fans to the Ryan Center, an average of 1,148 per contest. That breaks the previous attendance mark for a season, set during the record-breaking campaign when 7,038 fans saw the team in nine home games. Success Off The Court The women s basketball team posted a team g.p.a. of 2.86 during the fall semester. Freshmen Laurisa Ewert (3.57) and Amanda Mills (3.52) each made the Dean s List while Melanie Watson (3.05) and Tanya Rhodes (3.08) were each above the 3.0 mark for the semester. Attendance Mark Set In the Rams win against St. Bonaventure on Jan. 16th, 2003, the largest crowd ever to witness a women s basketball game in Kingston, R.I., was on hand. The crowd was part of the Rhode To Success Fieldtrip that drew 3,402 elementary and middle school children from the State of Rhode Island. The previous mark was 3,385 against Connecticut during the 1998 season. In 12 games this season, the Rams have drawn 13,777 fans to the Ryan Center, an average of 1,148 per contest. That breaks the previous attendance mark for a season, set during the record-breaking campaign when 7,038 fans saw the team in nine home games. Hosting The Rams On Jan. 10th, Shayla Johnson s parents, Jim and Denise Johnson, hosted the team for dinner for the third straight season. That marked the third time this season that the Rams have been shown some hospitality. During the team s trip to Maryland for the Terrapin Classic, junior guard Denise King s parents, John and Phyllis King, hosted the team after winning the championship. Also, two of the Rams biggest boosters, Don and Sandy McCreight hosted the team during their trip to Deland, Fla., for the Stetson Hatters Holiday Classic. WHJJ-AM (920) in East Providence will serve as the flagship station of Rams-on-Radio Network. WHJJ broadcasted an expanded women's basketball schedule this season airing 20 contests. This is the most comprehensive commercial radio package in the history of the program, and is the second largest in the Atlantic 10. 2

The University of Rhode Island women s basketball team dropped a hard-fought decision against the Dayton Flyers at the UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. Junior guard Denise King led the way for Rhode Island in the loss with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds while sophomore Katie Stailing narrowly missed a doubledouble with eight points and 10 rebounds. The two teams battled back-and-forth early in the contest with Dayton holding a 10-4 lead with 12:41 left in the first half. The Flyers led by as many as nine points (19-10) after a jumper from Amanda Moore with 7:29 on the clock. Rhode Island responded, however, and trimmed the lead to just after a jumper from King with 3:22 left. Dayton closed out the half on a 6-2 run and took a lead into the locker room at halftime. Rhode Island chipped away at the Dayton lead throughout the early stages of the second half. The Rams got their first lead after the game on a fast-break layup from junior Shayla Johnson, making the score with 9:38 left in the game. Rhode Island led by as much as three-points late in the game after a pair of free throws from King game the team a lead with 1:58 left in the game. Dayton s Marnina Sullivan hit a jumper with :56 on the clock, giving Dayton a lead. The Flyers then hit two free throws down the stretch, taking a advantage with :10 on the clock. 5 Last Meeting: Duquesne 69 Rhode Island 62 Feb. 6, 2003, Kingston, R.I. The University of Rhode Island women s basketball team dropped a hard-fought decision against Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 contest at the Ryan Center on Thursday evening. Rhode Island was without freshman standout Laurisa Ewert who was sidelined with an injured hand while sophomore Katie Stailing was knocked out of the game just four minutes in. Junior guard Denise King led the way for the Rams with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists while fellow junior Shayla Johnson added 17 points in the setback. Rhode Island jumped out to an early lead and held an 8-3 advantage after a free throw from junior Lyndita Liburd at the 12:45 mark. The Dukes then used a 6-0 run and took their first lead of the game, 9-8, after a jumper from Aliga Bautre with 10:17 left in the first half. The two teams traded leads back-and-forth with the Rams holding a lead with 3:23 left in the half. URI closed out the stanza on a 6-1 run, taking a lead into the locker room at halftime. The Rams shot 46.2% from the field in the first half and forced 14 Duquesne turnovers. Duquesne responded early in the second half, using a 9-3 run, capped by a jumper from Candace Futrell to tied the game at with 16:59 left in the game. The two teams battled evenly for the next several minutes with Duquesne holding a lead with 9:37 left in the game The Dukes then used a 14-5 run over a five-minute stretch to take a lead, their largest of the game, on a layup from Futrell with 3:37 left. The Rams cut the deficit to six on several occasions and the game was after a pair of free-throws from King with :14 left on the clock. That would be as close as the Rams would get, however, as Duquesne held on for the win. Khalihah Este-Shehu led the way for Duquesne with a double-double, scoring 15 points with 11 rebounds while Beth Friday also tallied a doubledouble with 10 points and 10 boards for the Dukes. Futrell added 14 points and four assists. Junior guard Yolett McPhee tallied six points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals off the bench for Rhode Island while freshman Tanya Rhodes also added seven points and three rebounds in the loss for the Rams. Duquesne shot 61.9% from the field for the second half and held the Rams to just 28.6% from the floor. 6 Last Meeting: Fordham 70 Rhode Island 68 Feb. 19, 2003, Bronx, N.Y. The University of Rhode Island women s basketball team dropped a hard-fought decision against Atlantic 10 East Division rival Fordham at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx, N.Y. Fordham jumped out to an early 15-1 over the first five minutes of the game. Rhode Island, however, and cut the lead to five points, 23-18, with 8:48 remaining after a steal and breakaway layup by junior Lyndita Liburd. Fordham though would go on a 10-0 run capped by a Beth Ann Dickinson three-pointer with four minutes left to make the lead Fordham would lead at the half, 39-31,after shooting 56.0% from the field in the first period. In the second half, Rhode Island fought their way back into the game, getting the lead to three points, 48-45, with 13:47 remaining in the half after two free throws by Liburd. Rhode Island then took a threepoint lead after back-to-back jumpers by Tanya Rhodes and Liburd at with 11:06 to go. Fordham responded with a 8-0 run of their own to go back up five points, 58-53, capped by a Caitlin Chiaramonte layup with just over eight minutes to play. Fordham would be up as many as seven points, but Rhode Island tied the game at 66 at the 2:04 mark with Denise King hitting a three-pointer and three free throws over a two-minute span. Fordham pushed back into the lead with a layup and a free throw by Ruff, 69-66, with a minute remaining. Rhodes then hit a layup for Rhode Island to get the lead to one, but Akiode hit one of two free throws to put Fordham back up two, Rhode Island got two good looks at a tying basket in the final seconds, but fell short with Fordham taking the win. For Rhode Island, Denise King and Lyndita Liburd each had 15 points, while Tanya Rhodes added 12 points and seven rebounds. The University of Rhode Island women s basketball team dropped a decision against Atlantic 10 West Division leader George Washington at the Charles E. Smith Center on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Laurisa Ewert and junior Shayla Johnson scored eight-points apiece to lead the Rams in the setback. George Washington tallied 50 first half points, on shooting and held the Rams to just seven field goals. URI shot 28% (7-25) from the floor, scoring only 15 first half points. URI did not score a field goal for an 11 minute stretch in the first half, allowing the Colonials to mount an 18-0 run over that span of time. The Rams were unable to recover in the second half, as the Colonials opened with a 16-6 run over the first six minutes to widen the margin to with 12:21 remaining in the game. URI shot just 33.3% in the second half, with GW maintaining their defensive pressure, forcing the Rams into 24 turnovers for the game. GWU senior Cathy Joens scored a game-high 28 points on shooting, including 5-8 from beyond the arc, and led four Colonials in double figures. Junior center Ugo Oha complemented Joens outside game with 17 hard-earned points inside and six blocks. Senior forward Erica Lawrence and junior forward Valerie Williams came off the bench to score 13 points apiece. The University of Rhode Island women s basketball team wrapped-up the regular season with a loss against La Salle in an Atlantic 10 contest at the Ryan Center on Saturday afternoon. The game was the third in the past six days for Rhode Island while La Salle snapped a six-game road-losing streak with the win. Freshman Tanya Rhodes led the way for Rhode Island with 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals in the setback. Rhode Island and La Salle traded leads early in the first half before Rhode Island used a 10-2 run over a four-minute stretch to take a 16-9 lead after a jumper from sophomore Chrys Washington with 12:17 left in the first half. The seven-point lead was URI s largest of the half. La Salle then used an 8-1 run of its own, tying the game at with 7:57 left in the half. The two teams then traded baskets for the remainder of the half and headed into the locker room tied at La Salle opened the second-half on a 7-0 run, capped by a jumper from junior Kat Foley to give the Explorers a lead with 16:02 left in the game. Rhode Island responded, however and regained the lead after a 12-4 run, capped by a jumper from Washington gave the Rams a advantage with 12:04 on the clock. The Rams led by two (45-43) with 5:15 on the clock. The Explorers regained the lead after a jumper from sophomore Jill Marano gave the team a lead with 3:04 left on the clock. URI trailed by just four points late in the contest. It wasn t enough, however, as La Salle hit six-of-eight from the free-throw line in the final two minutes to take the victory. Washington scored a team-high 13 points and added three rebounds, two steals and two assists for Rhode Island while junior Shayla Johnson was also in double-figures with 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the setback. Marano led the way for La Salle in the victory with a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds and two assists while freshman Davineia Payne was also in doublefigures for the Explorers with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. 9 Last Meeting: Rhode Island 66 Massachusetts 57 Jan. 30, 2003, Amherst, Mass. Senior Jen Butler scored 19 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, but the University of Massachusetts fell to the University of Rhode Island, 66-57, this evening in an Atlantic 10 Conference women s basketball game at the Mullins Center. The loss for the Minutewomen was their third in a row, the longest streak of the season. The Minutewomen once again jumped out to a quick start, taking an early 9-3 lead at the 15:37 mark. Rhode Island answered, however, with a 12-2 run of its own over the next 3:31 to take a lead. After consecutive baskets by UMass seniors Siiri Liivandi and Ebony Pegues tied the game at 15, the Rams reeled off the next nine points to take a lead. The Minutewomen tried to chip away the remainder of the first half, but could not get closer than four points. A jumper by sophomore Monique Govan at the buzzer sent Massachusetts into the locker room down by six, Much like the beginning of the game, Massachusetts charged out of the half scoring the first seven points and taking a brief one-point lead in the second half. URI answered with a an 8-2 run of its own to go back on top, this time for good. A three-pointer by Pegues at the 10:11 mark cut the Massachusetts deficit to one (43-42), but that was as close as it would get. The Rams held a late nine-point lead and held off a late Minutewoman surge with timely defense and clutch free throw shooting to preserve the win. Senior Jen Butler followed her own missed free throw with a lay-in at the 1:34 mark to bring UMass within three points at 58-55, but URI s Denise King went six-for-six at the charity stripe the final minute and change to seal the game. In addition to Butler s 15th double-double of the season, two other Minutewomen recorded doublefigures. Senior Nekole Smith (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had 14 points, while Pegues finished with 15 points and eight assists. Massachusetts out-shot the Rams.480 (24-50) to.458 (22-48), but for the third straight game was out-rebounded (33-25). The Minutewomen are the best rebounding team in the conference. King led URI with 23 points and six assists. She was 14-for-16 from the free throw line, while UMass as a team was just 4-for-11. Chrys Washington chipped in 12 points for the visitors, while Katie Stailing had 10. Junior guard Denise King scored a careerhigh 26 points to lead the University of Rhode Island women s basketball team to a thrilling win against Richmond in an Atlantic 10 contest at the Ryan Center on Sunday afternoon. Rhode Island jumped out to an early lead and held a six-point advantage (23-17) after a layup from junior Lyndita Liburd with 8:33 left in the half. Richmond then used a 12-4 run, capped by a three pointer by Amber Goppert to take a lead with 4:38 left in the first half. The Spiders closed out the half on a 16-6 run and took a lead into the locker room at halftime. Richmond shot 64% from the field in the first half. URI cut into the lead to open the second half, going on a 6-0 run, including a pair of free throws from sophomore Katie Stailing to make the score with 18:05 left in the game. Richmond responded, however and upped their lead to 11 points when a jumper from Cammy Desmond gave the team a lead with 14:08 left in the game. The Rams then went on a 10-1 run, including five points from freshman Tanya Rhodes to cut Richmond s lead to just two points (54-52) with 10:39 left on the clock. Rhode Island finally regained their lead after a jumper from King gave the Rams a lead with 6:48 remaining in the contest. The Rams extended their lead to as much as six points (67-61) after a free-throw from King with :49 left on the clock. Richmond chipped away at the lead with a three-pointer and a pair of layups. After a pair of missed free throws from Liburd, the Spiders controlled the ball with :07 left. A jumper by Desmond would fall just short, however, giving the Rams the thrilling victory. Stailing scored 17 points and added five rebounds and four steals while junior Shayla Johnson added nine points, two rebounds and two steals in the win. Rhodes tallied eight points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win. The University of Rhode Island women s basketball team dropped a decision against Atlantic 10 East Division leader Saint Joseph s at the Ryan Center on Thursday evening. Sophomore Katie Stailing led the way for Rhode Island with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists while junior Shayla Johnson added a team-high 17 points and four rebounds in the contest. Freshman Tanya Rhodes was also in double-figures for Rhode Island with 12 points, four rebounds and four steals. Junior Erin Brady narrowly missed a triple-double for Saint Joseph s with 18 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Rhode Island and Saint Joseph s traded leads throughout most of the first half with Saint Joseph s taking an lead on a threepointer from junior Amra Mehmedic with 8:51 left in the half. The Rams then used an 8-2 run, taking a advantage after a layup from Stailing. The game was tied at with 3:56 left in the game, however Saint Joseph s ended the half on a 7-2 run, taking a lead into the locker room at halftime. The Hawks shot 57.1% from the field in the first half. The Rams responded in the second half and cut the lead to just two points (42-40) after a jumper from King with 12:33 left on the clock. The Hawks then used a 10-2 run, taking a lead on a free-throw from Mehmedic with 7:23 left in the game. The University of Rhode Island women s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with an impressive against St. Bonaventure in a key Atlantic 10 East Division matchup at the Reilly Center in Olean, N.Y., on Sunday afternoon. Junior Denise King led the Rams with 20 points, while sophomore Katie Stailing finished with 19 and a team high seven rebounds. King and Stailing each connected three times from three-point range, and the Rams finished 7-13 from beyond the arc. The Rams held a rebounding edge, and forced the Bonnies into 20 turnovers. Rhode Island opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 13 point lead and held off the Bonnies down the stretch for the victory. The Rams never trailed in the first half and opened a halftime lead. Katie Stailing hit consecutive threepointers to spur the 10-2 run, giving the Rams a lead at the 17:26 mark. The Bonnies closed to within seven points when senior forward Courtney Mattingly scored five straight points to make the score with 7:01 to play. The Rams answered with five points to make the lead with 4:04 left and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The University of Rhode Island women s basketball team posted an impressive win against Temple in an Atlantic 10 contest at the Ryan Center on Saturday afternoon. The win was the 10th of the season for the Rams, improving the team to 10-6 for the season. Junior guard Denise King led the way for Rhode Island with a game-high 21 points, six rebounds and five assists while five URI players were in double-figures in the victory. Temple jumped out to an early 11-point lead after a 13-2 run to start, capped by a layup from Candice Dupree with 16:03 left in the first half. The Owls led by as many as 15 points in the first half after a layup from Christena Hamilton made the score with 10:29 left on the clock. Rhode Island responded, however and used a 16-3 run, capped by a jumper from junior Shayla Johnson to make the score with 4:48 left in the half. Temple took a lead into the locker room at halftime. The two teams traded baskets early in the second half before a layup from King tied the game at with 14:38 remaining in the game. The Rams took their first lead of the afternoon when Johnson hit a layup and converted the foul shot for a three-point play to give the Rams a lead with 13:51 left. Rhode Island continued to build on its lead throughout the second half and led by 11- points after a pair of free throws from Johnson made the score with 3:58 left in the contest. The Rams have posted a mark during the campaign and in the Rams notched the ninthbest record in school history with a mark. During her time at URI, Pearman has coached a two-time all-conference player and had six players earn Rookie of the Week honors. She has also transformed the Rams into the top defensive team in the league, holding opponents to just 61.4 points per game this season. Prior to arriving at Rhode Island, Pearman spent two years with the American Basketball League s most popular franchise, the New England Blizzard, first as an assistant then as associate head coach on Hall-of-Famer K.C. Jones staff. In Pearman s first season, New England climbed out of the Eastern Division s cellar into the playoffs after posting a record and a second-place finish. Pearman worked with former All-Americans Jennifer Rizzotti, Kara Wolters and Deanna Tate along with Olympian Carolyn Jones in her tenure with the Blizzard. Thirteen games into the campaign, the ABL disbanded. Pearman is regarded as one of the most important figures in the storied history of the women s basketball program at her alma mater, Maryland. She arrived at College Park from nearby Hagerstown as a high school All-American in Four years later, Pearman concluded one of the most storied careers in the program s history. She s the 13 th leading scorer (1,284) and rebounder (574) in Terrapin history, and is ranked in Maryland s top 15 in seven categories including games started (98) and played (118), blocked shots (36) and field goal percentage (.498). She also earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference second-team honors in 1984, and was selected to the 1982 All-ACC Tournament team. It is the team s success, however, that tells the real story. One of the nation s premier programs under then head coach Chris Weller, Maryland was ranked in the Associated Press Top 20 every week of Pearman s playing career. The Terrapins dominated the ACC, capturing three consecutive conference titles from 1981 to Not only did Maryland earn post-season bids in all four of her years as a Terrapin, the team advanced deep into tournament play. In her freshman year in 1981, Maryland advanced to the Elite Eight of the final AIAW Tournament. Pearman and her teammates continued their winning ways the following three years competing in the NCAA Tournament. In 1982, Maryland reached the first NCAA Women s Basketball Final Four, and made the Sweet 16 the following season. Pearman parlayed her experience as player into a career as a college coach with similar results. In her 12 seasons on Weller s coaching staff, she help guide Maryland to three Atlantic Coast Conference titles (1986, 88 and 89) and eight NCAA Tournament appearances. The Terrapins reached the Final Four in 1989, and the Elite Eight in 1988 and Maryland was the top-ranked team in the nation heading into the 1992 NCAA Tournament before losing in the regional finals. As the coordinator of Maryland s recruiting program, Pearman s efforts were critical to the program s lofty achievements. She was responsible for the 1994 recruiting class that was ranked as high as fourth nationally. Among Pearman s recruits were two players who played for the U.S. Select Team, four players on the U.S. Junior-National Team and eight individuals who participated in the U.S. Olympic Festival as well as three ACC Rookie-of-the-Year Award winners. 16

18 ASSISTANT COACH TOM GARRICK Birthdate: July 7, 1966 Hometown: West Warwick, R.I. Education: B.A., Rhode Island, 1989 Coaching: Assistant coach, Rhode Island, 1998-present Garrick was no stranger to the University of Rhode Island when he took the post as an assistant on the staff last year. After spending three years as an assistant for the Rhode Island men s basketball program, the talented young coach helped lead the Rams to a 15-13, the ninth-best record in school history in his first-year on the staff. One of the greatest players in the storied history of Rhode Island basketball, Garrick has toiled in a variety of areas at his alma mater, including recruiting, personal instruction, game coaching, outreach programs and overseeing the program s academic support system. Sports Illustrated named the personable Garrick the 39 th best athlete in state history in its millennium issue s list of the top athletes. The Providence Journal recognized him in its listing of the state s greatest athletes. The native of West Warwick, R.I., finished his career as Rhode Island s 15 th all-time leading scorer, with 1,573 points. He finished second in career steals (189) and fourth in career assists (407). One of the most popular players in school annals, Garrick played in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks. He also played in the CBA with the Rapid City Thrillers and in Europe in Luverkruse, Germany, Seville, Spain and Istanbul, Turkey before retiring after the 1998 season. In October 1998, Garrick was inducted into the University s Athletic Hall of Fame. ASSISTANT COACH MARC WILSON Birthdate: Sept. 14, 1964 Education: B.A., Minnesota, 1989 Coaching: Head Coach, Anoka-Ransey Community College, Assistant Coach, Minnesota, Assistant Coach, Rhode Island, 2001-present After only one season on coach Pearman s staff, Wilson proved he was a top recruiter by helping the Rams sign eight players that will help the team reach the next level. Prior to arriving at Rhode Island, Wilson spent four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota. While at Minnesota, Wilson signed Wisconsin s 2001 Player of the year and recruited and signed four of Minnesota s top-7 Class of 2000 to play for the Gophers. A 1989 graduate from Minnesota, he starred for four years for the Gophers. A team co-captain, he was the team MVP in 1986 after leading the Gophers in scoring while earning honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades. He currently ranks 10 th on the school s all-time scoring list and is fourth among the all-time assist leaders. In the summer of 1998, Wilson served as the assistant coach of the Big Ten s All-Star Team that accumulated a 4-0 record while playing the top club teams in Denmark and Sweden.
