NEW LIONS LEADER NEW TO DETROIT IN 6 ¾ Since joining the Lions, Quinn, who spent the previous 6 seasons with the New England Patriots, has begun Players acquired by Quinn so far in 6 building the football foundation which he believes will provide the team with the optimum chance for success. During his introductory press conference, he quickly set forth his vision. ¾ Among the numerous free agents acquired by Quinn this offseason was WR Marvin Jones, considered by many to be the top free agent wide receiver on the market. Additionally, Quinn also retained key Lions free agents, including DT Haloti Ngata and LB Tahir Whitehead. ¾ His initial draft class featured the selection of the most linemen (offense and defense) in a Lions draft since 989, highlighted by the team s first three picks (T Taylor Decker, DT A Shawn Robinson and C Graham Glasgow). PATRIOTS PAST During his time with New England, Quinn served a number of roles in the player personnel department, including most recently as Director of Pro Scouting from -5. While he worked as Director of Pro Scouting, the Patriots won the 4 Super Bowl and four-straight AFC East Division championships. ¾ From 9-, Quinn was the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel. For the previous nine years, Quinn worked in several different capacities within the Patriots player personnel department, including roles in college scouting as a National Scout and Regional Scout. He played an integral role in evaluating and procuring talent for the team through the NFL draft process, free agency, trades, etc. ¾ While working for the New England Patriots, he helped contribute to one of the most impressive stretches in NFL history, one that produced four Super Bowl titles, including the most recent championship in 4 (Super Bowl XLIX). Since, Quinn s first year with New England, the Patriots have won six AFC Championships, 3 AFC East titles, + games in a season times (which includes the past six years) and + games in 4 of his 6 seasons. ¾ As Director of Pro Scouting, Quinn utilized all possible methods to seek the Patriots next player. This approach had a tremendous impact on the Patriots Super Bowl XLIX championship as seven players, who were acquired (including two via trades) after the start of the regular season, all played in the Super Bowl. ¾ Another key player during the Super Bowl XLIX Championship run, CB Malcolm Butler, signed with the club after a rookie minicamp tryout. Prior to that, he worked in college scouting as the team s national scout in 8 and as a regional scout from 4-7. ¾ In 8, the Patriots drafted LB Jerod Mayo in the first round and WR Matthew Slater in the fifth round. 5 WHAT TO WATCH FOR FOURTH-AND-FINAL DRIVE The Lions are 3-3 through six games, with every game this season being decided by a touchdown or less. The Lions host the last of a three-game home stand with a hot Washington Redskins team. Detroit looks to stockpile the win column after grabbing two victories in their last two matchups. After a -3 start, the Lions have begun tallying up impact plays in all three phases of the game. When backs have been against the wall, Lions players have answered the call all over the field, starting with QB Matthew Stafford driving the offense into opponent territory. All three of Stafford s game-winning drives this season have helped setup Lions K Matt Prater for gamewinning field goals in every Lions victory this season. Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell on Prater making a game-winning field goal in consecutive weeks: We don t like to have them end that way, but when we re in the middle of it, it s always great to be able to come out on top in that regard. We can t go to the well too often in those situations, it s just not going to be something that we re going to be able to do week in and week out, obviously, but our guys have performed well. The Lions have made plays in do-or-die situations, including important fourth-down conversions. The Lions are four-forfour on fourth down the past two weeks. On fourth-and-one from their own 49 last week against Los Angeles, the Lions went for it early in the first half last week against the Rams. A few series later Detroit faced fourth-and-short from the goal line and successfully converted for a touchdown to WR Andre Roberts. The Lions are a perfect five-for-five on fourth downs in 6, and they face a Redskins team with a 33 percent conversion rate. Detroit has proven capable to be efficient when rolling the dice on fourth down, as the ability to move the chains and keep the ball in the hands of offensive playmakers has paid great dividends in the first half of 6. Caldwell on if aggressiveness on fourth downs is an attempt to pressure the opponent: It s not any different than we ve always done it. We ve always kind of taken those opportunities when we thought they were there. We go after it, we try to be prudent with it. But, like I tell you, if you check it we ve probably been in the upper echelon a number of times when we go for it on fourth down since I ve been here. And so, I just think you have to commend our guys for standing up to the challenge because it s not easy to get one yard in the National Football League. It s a difficult task, and I think our guys upfront did a nice job. The Lions defense has also seen its fair share of big-time opportunities and has seized the moments when given the chance. After Prater drilled the go-ahead field goal late in the past two weeks, Lions CB Darius Slay and S Rafael Bush both forced interceptions on the opponents final drives to secure victories against both Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Bush on the encouragement the defense gains by consistently forcing turnovers: You re just always working to get better, always working to make the least mistakes as possible. This game is not played by perfect people. We understand that mistakes are going to be made, but it s up to us to limit those mistakes, limit those big plays and when the opportunity comes for you to make your play, just make it. Caldwell on if he gets satisfaction seeing his team make clutch plays: At the end of the game, they just don t back down from tight situations like that. I think we ve gotten to be comfortable being uncomfortable. They kind of just feel like that s the norm and it s an atmosphere in which they can perform well, and they ve been able to do so. STAFF-FORD FIELD The Lions' comeback win over Los Angeles rested solely on the shoulder of QB Matthew Stafford, who completed four touchdown passes to four different receivers. In the first quarter, Stafford connected with WR Marvin Jones Jr. for a seven-yard touchdown, the duo s fourth scoring completion of the season. Next, Stafford hit WR Andre Roberts in the end zone for a two-yard touchdown in the second quarter to tie the game 4-4, marking Roberts first receiving score as a Lion. The third quarter saw Stafford complete a four-yard touchdown pass to WR Anquan Boldin, and in the fourth Stafford hit WR Golden Tate for a 3-yard completion to tie the game at 8-8. Week 6 marked Stafford s th career game in which he s thrown four touchdown passes, as he became just the sixth quarterback since 96 to tally + games with four touchdowns in a players first eight NFL seasons. By tossing four touchdown passes against Los Angeles, Stafford, now with 4 touchdown passes on the season, moved past QB Bobby Layne (3 in 95) for the second-most touchdown passes by a Lions quarterback through the first six games of the season. He trails only his own franchise mark of 5 touchdowns through the first six games of the season. Stafford on how the offense gets in a rhythm with numerous starters missing from the game: Just a lot of hard work. You know, we go out and practice, practice extremely hard. We have guys who are coming in, like you said, off the street really the last two weeks and have played a ton of snaps for us. It s a testament to those guys, the guys that are coaching those guys to get them ready to play and just being veteran guys. They come in ready to play, go play. Not to say it s going to be perfect every time, but those guys are really helping us and helping us battle through a tough time as far as who s available at the moment. After evening the game at 8-8 in the fourth quarter, the Lions regained late possession of the ball. Stafford led the offense on a nine-play, 44-yard scoring drive resulting in a field goal, notching a 3-8 come-from-behind victory. This marked Stafford s 3rd career game-winning drive when trailing or tied in the fourth quarter or in overtime. Stafford finished the day with 3 of 3 passes completed for 7 yards and 4 rushing yards on five attempts. His 39.8 passer rating set a single-game franchise record among Lions passers with 3+ pass attempts, surpassing the previous best set by QB Gary Danielson (38., /9/78). DETROIT LIONS WEEKLY RELEASE

6 Tate on Stafford s durability: What I love is that we have guys that are playmakers, and when we need it the most 9 (Stafford) is going to duck his head and just run. He s done a phenomenal job at getting those key first downs, putting his body on the line and hopping back up. That is one tough son-of-a-gun, and every year I thank God, thank you for this tough, Texas boy. You ve got to love him. You never have to worry about him showing up, no matter if he s sick or not feeling it. Whatever it is, he s always going to show up and give us the best chance he can to win. RISING RECEIVERS Lions receivers hauled in four touchdown passes from QB Matthew Stafford en route to a 3-8 victory over the visiting Rams last Sunday. WR Golden Tate led the way with eight catches for a career-high 65 yards and one touchdown in the win. It was his ninth career -yard receiving game and th including playoffs. Perhaps the highlight of the game came in the third quarter when Stafford used a hard count to draw the Rams offside. Knowing he had a free play, No. 9 took a shot deep down the sideline and hit Tate for a 6-yard gain that was initially ruled a touchdown. However, after review, the replay official determined Tate was down by contact at the Los Angeles one-yard line. The ruling took away what would have been Tate s first touchdown reception of the contest. Tate on his long reception that was initially ruled a touchdown: You know, the defense jumped offside, so it was a free play and I just kind of ran down the field, looked up, the ball was on its way and I just kind of made a play and made a guy miss. And then the turf monster got ahold of me. Tate made up for it later in the game when he caught a short screen from Stafford and took it 3 yards to the house. Tate, who turned in his best single-game performance of his seven-year NFL career against Los Angeles, talked about his mentality in this game after an uncharacteristically slow start to the season. Tate on how far he s come since two weeks ago at Chicago: I m kind of a forget-the-past guy, just keep grinding, just keep working. That s really all I can do, just show up to work every day and control what I can control. I can t control when the ball is going to be thrown to me or what side (Matthew) Stafford s looking at or what plays are called. But when my number is called on, I can control from then on. Just kind of, just kept working at practice, just kept working. Stayed in the book, you know, just didn t listen to what people were saying outside of the locker room and my chance came. All I did was just do my job, that s all I did. Caldwell on the importance of WR Golden Tate s performance in light of offensive injuries: Golden is one of those guys that, with the ball in his hand he s pretty tough to handle. He can do it a number of different ways, and Jim Bob (Cooter) and those guys have been really creative in trying to make certain that he does touch it. Came up with a lot of big ones, even on the offside play, which is something they work on time and time again in that situation with a free play. We re glad we were able to get a big one out of it this time around, but Golden is obviously a big part of what we do. Just like anything else, I think I mentioned earlier, when everybody s concerned about Golden and all those kinds of things, that some games you re not going to have what Marvin (Jones) has, number of catches, or Anquan (Boldin). By the way, Anquan had a lot of big catches in that game, too. But, there s going to be times where I think everybody, they re skilled enough and talented enough that there s no telling who s going to be the leading receiver from week to week. As Caldwell alluded to, the former Notre Dame standout was merely one of the bright spots in Detroit s receiving corps last Sunday. WR Anquan Boldin proved, yet again, he s still one of the game s top wideouts at age 36. The 4-year vet moved up the NFL s all-time receiving list with his first reception of the ball game, an eight-yard pass-andcatch from Stafford, as he surpassed seven-time Pro Bowl WR Torry Holt (3,38) for 5th on the all-time list for career receptions. Later in the game, Boldin found himself on the receiving end of a four-yard touchdown pass from Stafford, marking his third touchdown reception of the season and 77th of his career. WR Andre Roberts also made his presence known in the second quarter when he hauled in a clutch, two-yard touchdown reception on 4th-and-. After rolling the dice, Caldwell was able to breathe a sigh of relief as Roberts made a big play in a crucial situation. Caldwell on his thought process on the fourth-down conversion touchdown: What we try and do is try and make certain that during the course of the week we discuss all these things, try to discuss all of the possibilities and the what if s and it just kind of lined up, but it took a heck of a play. I mean, Andre (Roberts) going up, literally taking it, that was a heck of a throw by Matthew (Stafford) and a heck of an effort by Andre. Did a nice job, so we know we were fortunate in that regard. With his touchdown reception, Roberts became just the ninth player in Lions history to record a receiving touchdown and punt return touchdown (/ at Chi) in the same season and first since WR Jeremy Ross in 3. His 9-yard career long rushing attempt was part of the Lions fourthquarter drive that tied the game at QB Matthew Stafford s 39.8 passer rating against the Rams last week ranks as the second-highest single-game rating of his career and the highest in games with 3+ pass attempts.
