(817) MAVS RETURN HOME TO TAKE ON HSU COWBOYS will try to extend its home-court winning streak to 13 games with a victory against Hardin-Simmons. The Mavericks have not lost at home since Jan. 20 of last season. UTA has two games at Texas Hall - the HSU tilt and a Jan. 2 game against UT-Pan American before hitting the road for Southland Conference play Jan. 5 at Northwestern State. QUICK HITS is ranked 19th in the Collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll... The ranking is the first of any kind for the program... The 8-2 start is the best in school history... UTA has beaten six Division I non-conference opponents for the first time... UTA has won 15 of their last 19 regular season games dating back to last season... Heading into the OSU game, UTA led the nation in field-goal percentage and was sixth in field-goal percentage defense (36.7 percent)... senior center Jermaine Griffin leads the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game and is ranked third nationally in field-goal percentage and 53rd in rebounding (9.8 rpg.)... With his 12-rebound performance against Oklahoma State, Griffin moved into 10th place on the career list at UTA... UTA has shot better than 50 percent or better from the field in five of their first 10 games...griffin, Vereen and Moffitt are all ranked in the top 10 in field-goal shooting in the Southland Conference... Seven different Mavericks have scored in double figures this season. THE SERIES and Hardin-Simmons have split the past six meetings with UTA going 2-1 in Abilene and the Cowboys going 2-1 in Arlington. UTA has won three straight, however-hsu s most recent victory against the Mavericks was Feb. 23, UTA leads the all-time series, ABOUT HARDIN-SIMMONS The Cowboys (4-4) are no strangers to Southland Conference competition, taking on UTA in this contest and Sam Houston State on Nov. 29. Sam Houston won that game, in Huntsville. HSU has won three of its past four games, including a victory against East Texas Baptist that featured a 23-point performance by Mardochee Jean. The Cowboys roster includes two Dallas Fort Worth-area players - starting point guard Steven Luckey (South Grand Prairie HS) and starting forward Charlie Pannell (FW Temple Christian). Page 1

UTA used an 18-6 run to tie the game at on a Jermaine Griffin free throw with 7:01 left in the game. After a James Anderson 3-pointer with 2:13 left gave OSU a lead, Anthony Vereen counter with a bucket with 1:49 left to trim the lead to UTA committed a season-high 22 turnovers, two in the final minute and to preserve the win for OSU. Oklahoma State (6-5) snapped a two-game losing skid with the win. The Cowboys were led in scoring by Anderson with 15 points. Ibrahima Thomas, Obi Muonelo, Terrel Harris and Byron Eaton had 10 each. (8-2) dropped its second game in the week after starting the season a school record 8-0. Rod Epps led the Mavs with a season-high 15 point. The Mavs leading scorer, Griffin, had his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Larry Posey chipped in 12 points. HOME GROWN Fourteen players hail from Texas on the UT Arlington roster. Only junior guard Brandon Long (Richton Park, Ill.) from out of state. Austin (1) UTSA Texas State...20 GRIFFIN AMONG NATION S BEST Junior center Jermaine Griffin was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week for the first week of the season after 16 points and 14 rebounds in a win over UC Riverside on Nov. 12. Griffin led the nation in field-goal percentage hitting prior to the Okla. State game. He is shooting 67.8 (64-of-95) from the field. Griffin set the Mavs career blocks record with two blocks at SE Louisiana on Jan. 13, The senior has 123 career blocked shots. His 58 blocked shots last season is a singleseason record, eclipsing 43 set by Paul Renfro in He joined 14 other former players with 500 career rebounds on Nov. 21, his 558 career rebounds is 10th on the career list. His 12 rebounds against Oklahoma State passed Johnny McDowell for10th place. Griffin needs 34 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau and would join eight Mavs (Mack Callier, Paul Renfro, Bill Washington, Steven Thomas, Brian Myers, Bobby Kenyon, John Shelton and Derrick Obasohan) with 1,000-points and 500 rebounds in their careers. KID COACH Second-year head coach Scott Cross is the fourth youngest coach in Division I. Indiana-Fort Wayne coach Dane Fife is 28 and Butler coach Brad Stevens is 31. Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel is 32 years old and Cross recently turned 33. FAB FRESHMAN HOPES FOR SUPER SOPHOMORE SEASON Sophomore Ro ger Guignard had a career high seven steals against North Texas on Nov. 21, one shy of a school record. He set a personal best with 10 assists against Schreiner on Nov. 26. He became the first Mav since Derrick Obasohan in to win the SLC Freshman of the Year last season. He was the first Maverick to average in double figures as a freshman since Bill Washington in by scoring 10.9 points per game in 30 games last season. He became just the second Mav to score 70-or-more 3-point field goals with 71 last season. Willie Brand set the season record of 77 in He needs 18 3-pointers to reach 100 in his career and 23 to move into 10th on the all-time list. MAVERICKS ON THE COURT, TIGERS OFF The men s basketball team may be Mavericks on the court, but for a day they were Tigers off the hardwood. The Mavericks will visit student at Thornton Elementary School in Arlington later this year. The visit has become an annual visit where players and coaches deliver motivational talks and signs autographs for the students. PRIME TIME will appear on live television a minimum of six times during the season. The Mavs premiered on the Mountain Network when faced TCU on Dec. 17. was shown in parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri when they faced Oklahoma State on Dec. 22. The UTA at Sam Houston State game is slated to appear on FOXSW on Jan. 30. MetroSports, a division of Time Warner Cable, taped-delayed two games - The UTA vs. North Texas game on Nov. 21 and the UTA-Texas Wesleyan contest on Nov. 29. could make another live television appearance if they reach the finals of the O Reilly Auto Parts SLC Postseason Tournament, March 16, 2008, from the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. Page 4 MAVS OVERSEAS Five former Mavericks are currently playing professional basketball. Donnie Beacham was an all-star for the Texas Tycoons of the American Basketball Association. He was the winner of the 2007 All-Star Weekend Slam-Dunk competition. Former Maverick players Steven Thomas (Stjarnan Club of the Icelandic Express League), Jarrett Howell (Svendborg Club of the Danish Basketball League) and Kenneth Henderson (Albacomp Basketball Club of the Hungary League) signed one-year contracts and are currently playing for their respective clubs. Derrick Obasohan signed a multi-year deal with the Strasbourg Basketball Club with te Ligue Nationale de Basketball in France. INJURIES Brandon Long will not play after suffering an undisclosed injury in the final minute of the loss at TCU. He is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks. BULLET POINTS returns five starters and 10 lettermen from last season s squad that tied for fifth in the Southland Conference. Senior center Jermaine Griffin is a preseason first-team all-slc choice after leading UTA in scoring (13.2) and rebounding (6.8) last season. With 12 blocks in his first eight games, freshman center Trey Parker is already tied for 40th on the career blocked shots list at. Senior Jermaine Griffin is the career leader with 123 blocks.
