1 season outlook How do you improve on a 2007 season that saw the Wake Forest men s soccer team win its first national championship in program history? For 15th-year head coach Jay Vidovich the answer is simple: win another title. With 19 players and eight starters returning from last year s title team, it would appear the 2008 squad has a strong shot at becoming the first team since Indiana in 2003 and 2004 to repeat as men s soccer national champs. I think the coaching staff and the players are real excited about the season because we have a special team, Vidovich said. We have a lot of guys returning with experience and newcomers that are hungry to join in. We have some quality competition that we re playing against this year that will really test us. It should prepare us to see how good we can be. We have the potential to be good and the question is how good are we going to be. Forwards Wake Forest returns three of its top weapons on the attack line. Senior Cody Arnoux scored a team-high 15 goals in 2007 and was named a third-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Senior Marcus Tracy tallied 11 goals in 2007 and was named Most Outstanding Cody Arnoux (above) scored a team-leading 15 goals in Offensive Player at the 2007 College Cup after scoring three times. Junior Zack Schilawski, who scored five game-winning goals in 2007, including the game-winner in the national championship, will also figure prominently in the Deacs front line. We are very fortunate to have three very strong players up front, Vidovich said. Marcus is capable of scoring at any moment. Cody has a great workrate and is very good at getting the ball in the net. Zack is a very smart player who is very capable of finishing his opportunities at the net. Freshmen Alfredo Rodriguez-Allen will add depth to the Wake Forest attack. Rodriguez-Allen, a member of the U-17 and U-20 Guatemalan national teams, can play up front or play at the flank. Midfielders Marcus Tracy was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the 2007 College Cup. The strength of the 2008 Wake Forest soccer team is in the midfield. Senior captain Sam Cronin provides leadership in the midfield. Cronin has played in every game of his Wake Forest career and was named a second-team All-American by the NSCAA in Sam is the cement that keeps us together, Vidovich said. His abilities to defend, attack and read the game, as well as his desire to win, make a tremendous impact on the team ACC and Soccer America Freshman of the Year Corben Bone, senior Michael Lahoud, junior Austin da Luz and senior Jamie Franks also figure in as starters in the midfield. Bone tallied five goals and eight assists in 2007, while Lahoud added four goals and four assists. Da Luz led the team in assists in 2007 with 13, while Franks made an appearance in 23 games in 2007, including 20 starts. Corben is a tremendous player who can change the game with a single touch or a single pass, and he brings unique creativity to our team, Vidovich said. Mike has been playing like a big timer. He is capable of scoring goals and digging balls out of an opponent. Austin had a great spring and is starting to score more goals. Jamie is a versatile player and a great coach on the field. He knows what I want done and gets the message to the rest of the team. Vidovich will also look to several newcomers to provide depth in the midfield. Incoming freshmen include Luke Norman, who Vidovich compares to current MLS player and former Demon Deacon Wells Thompson, Nick Millington and Sam Redmond. Each player earned All-American honors during their high school career. From left to right: 2007 NSCAA Second Team All-American Sam Cronin, ACC Freshman of the Year Corben Bone and Michael Lahoud will anchor the midfield for the Deacons in Defenders Two of the biggest losses from the 2007 squad come on defense as Wake Forest will have to replace first team All-American Pat Phelan and Julian Valentin. Two of the players Vidovich will rely on to fill the hole include seniors Evan Brown and Lyle Adams. Brown and Adams were key cogs in helping the Deacons to a school-record 15 shutouts in Evan is one of the best backs in the country, Vidovich said. He has enough pace and tenacity to handle anyone one-on-one. Lyle gets better every day and is a threat when he gets into the attacking territory. Evan Brown, who was named to the Carolina Classic All-Tournament Team, will be one of the leaders on the defensive line w a k e f o r e s t m e n s s o c c e r

2 season outlook Another strong for the Deacs is sophomore Ike Opara. Opara spent the summer with the U.S. U-20 national team and was named First Team All-Freshman by Soccer America. Ike is dominant in the air and can run down attackers and get behind them, Vidovich said. He is difficult to beat and his defending skills are improving all the time. Juniors Nick Courtney and Justin Lichtfuss will also challenge for a starting position in the Deacon backfield. Courtney saw action in 12 games in 2007 and scored the game-winner against Bradley. Lichtfuss also saw time in 12 games and made six starts in Nick is skillful and athletic and can add depth both on the inside as well as the outside, Vidovich said. Justin is very competitve and his practice teams always seem to win. A trio of incoming freshmen will also look to crack the lineup. Kyle Adams, Chris Estridge, Jesse Sokolow and Danny Wenzel will add depth to the defensive line. Goalkeepers The biggest hole to fill for the 2008 Deacons comes in net with the loss of Brian Edwards, who was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player at the 2007 College Cup. Edwards, currently with Toronto FC of Major League Soccer, finished his career with a school record 44 shutouts. Junior Akira Fitzgerald enters the season as the starting goalkeeper. Fitzgerald saw action in four games in 2007, posting a record with one shutout. Akira has been waiting in the wings the last two years and is ready to step in, Vidovich said. He has tremendous abilities and is great off the line. He has great shot-blocking ability but just needs some experience. Akira Fitzgerald enters the 2008 season as Wake Forest s starting goalkeeper. Junior Austin Chelko and freshman Doug Ryan round out the goalkeeping corps for the Deacons. Chelko played in one game in 2007, but gained valuable experience in the 2008 spring season and in the trip to Brazil this past summer. Doug has a lot of tools to work with, Vidovich said. We ll have to see whether he can use those tools to play in the ACC. He has shown tremendous improvement since we started seeing him. that advanced to postseason play in 2007, including games against 2007 College Cup semifinalists Virginia Tech and Massachusetts. For our juniors and seniors to achieve their soccer goals, we needed a very demanding schedule and the 2008 schedule should provide that, Vidovich said. We face some very strong non-conference opponents and the ACC continues to get better and better each season. Wake opens the season in Chapel Hill, N.C., at the Nike Carolina Classic. The Deacs will face VCU in the season lid-lifter before battling Florida International. The 2007 national champs open the home schedule the following weekend against four-time national champion UCLA and South Carolina in the Deacon Fall Classic Presented by NewBridge Bank. Other notable non-conference opponents include a road trip to UC Santa Barbara and a home date with Massachusetts. Wake last faced UC Santa Barbara in 2006 when the Gauchos defeated the Deacs on penalty kicks in the 2006 College Cup semifinals. Massachusetts advanced to the 2007 College Cup semifinals before falling to eventual runner-up Ohio State. The game against UCSB will be a great challenge for our team because not many teams can go there and win, Vidovich said. Their field is probably one of the more difficult places to play in the NCAA. The ACC slate opens at home against Clemson. Virginia Tech, a team the Deacons beat in the semifinals of the 2007 College Cup, comes to Spry Stadium on October 4. Wake Forest will also host 2007 ACC Champion Boston College on October 25. Duke is the fourth conference opponent that Wake will host in The conference just continues to get more difficult each year, Vidovich said. We have always had the respect of everyone in the country but since 2000, the ACC has had at least one team in the final four every year and three national champions. The conference road schedule features a national television appearance on September 26 against Maryland. The clash between the Deacs and Terps will be televised on the Fox Soccer Channel. Other conference road games include trips to NC State, North Carolina and 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Virginia. The 2008 ACC Tournament will once again be held in Cary, N.C., while the 2008 College Cup will be contested in Frisco, Texas. It s very hard to win the ACC Tournament because you have three games in five days, Vidovich said. The guys definitely want to win the ACC Tournament but it will be a great challenge due to the caliber of teams in the conference. wake soccer season outlook 2008 deacons coaching staff 2008 opponents 2007 in review record book history The Schedule Wake Forest traditionally has one of the toughest schedules in the country, and the 2008 season is no different. In fact, the 2008 ledger may be the most difficult in program history. The schedule features eight teams w a k e f o r e s t s p o r t s. c o m 19
