The Bears will enter the contest attempting to get back in the win column following a loss at PAC-10 opponent Washington. Reggie Holmes led the Bears with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Kevin Thompson posted a gamehigh 12 rebounds. The Terrapins (11-2) are coming off their seventh straight win as a result of a victory at home against Charlotte on Saturday night. Junior point guard Greivis Vasquez had 27 points and Landon Milbourne scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half to help improve to 9-0 at Comcast Center. The Terps hold a commanding 5-0 record against Morgan State since the season. The Departed The Bears had three key departures from last season s squad, and every one of them played a key role to the team s success over the last two years. Guard Jamar Smith was selected as the 2008 MEAC Player of the Year and center Boubacar Coly earned the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honor, while point guard Jerrell Green led the squad in assists (3.6 apg) and quarterbacked the team. Those three guys contributed significantly to the foundation of our program, noted Todd Bozeman. Hopefully, we ll be able to look back and know they were the most important building blocks we had. 2 MSU s Last Game -- MSU 67, Washington 81 (12/30/08-Seattle, Wash.) SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) - Freshman guard Isaiah Thomas scored a career-high 27 points and Jon Brockman grabbed the 1,000th rebound of his career Tuesday night as Washington extended its winning streak to seven, beating Morgan State Senior center Brockman, who sat out nearly 11 minutes of the second half after picking up his fourth foul with 16:55 left in the game, added 18 points for the Huskies (9-3). He finished the night with five rebounds, giving him 1,004. He is within 47 rebounds of the all-time Washington career record of 1,051 set by Doug Smart from Reggie Holmes led Morgan State (5-8) with 16 points. Jermaine Bolden had 15 points, and Marquise Kately chipped in 14. FLASHBACK - MSU at (Dec. 27, 2007) COLLEGE PARK, Md. Eric Hayes led five Terps in double-figure scoring as pulled away in the second half against Morgan State, 89-65, at the Comcast Center before 17,950 fans. The loss dropped the Bears record to 4-4 (1-0 MEAC) while improved to 6-3. Morgan State entered the contest shorthanded in the backcourt as a result of injuries, as starting point guard Jerrell Green (ankle sprain) and Jermaine Bolden (shoulder) watched the game from the Bears bench. As a result, junior forward Marquise Kately took over the point guard position. Kately played the entire game and finished with just three turnovers, however his offensive production struggled as he completed the game shooting 2-for-15 from the field and scored a season-low with five points. Sophomore guard Reggie Holmes led the Bears with a game-high 20 points with six rebounds and three steals, while Jamar Smith added 16 points including seven boards and four assists. Boubacar Coly finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. employed tough full court pressure and got baskets by James Gist to help the Terps jump out to an early 8-0 lead. Gist finished the game with 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. The Bears seemed to gain confidence as the game continued and rallied. Smith scored the Bears first basket to help spark a 13-5 run over the next six minutes as the Bears took advantage of careless Terps turnovers and poor shooting. An Adrian Bowie turnover led to a powerful dunk by Smith over Greivis Vasquez to knot the ballgame at 13 with 10:11 remaining in the half. Morgan State would go on to take a lead at the 3:39 mark after an alley-oop dunk by Smith to Kately, followed by a layup by Gene Johnson as Terps fans grew restless. fired back with an 11-4 run. In the final seconds of the half Vasquez drove the lane and had his shot blocked twice. head coach Gary Williams felt Vasquez was fouled on the play and threw his jacket to center court before storming off the court in disgust. The Terps bench was assessed a technical foul as they went into the locker room with a halftime lead. Holmes Selected MEAC Player of the Week (Dec. 14, 2008) Junior guard Reggie Holmes of Morgan State University was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week, for the week ending December 14, Holmes (G, 6-4, 185, Jr., Baltimore, Md.) recorded 29 points and six rebounds in the Bears win over DePaul. He connected on 9-of-21 baskets including 5-for-9 from behind the 3-point arc in MSU s first victory over a member of the Big East. He also added two steals and one blocked shot in the victory. Marquise Kately returns to lead Morgan State in WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Morgan State, the recipient of 15 of the 21 first-place votes, was selected as the top preseason pick for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men s Basketball season, as determined by votes of the league s head coaches and sports information directors at the MEAC Men s Basketball Press Luncheon held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Winston-Salem, N.C. Led by the league s Coach of the Year Todd Bozeman, Morgan State returns two starters and seven letterwinners from last year s squad that won the MEAC regular season title and reached the NIT Tournament for the first time in school history. All-conference forward Marquise Kately and returning All-MEAC selection Reggie Holmes give the Bears a great deal of experience and talent coming into the season. Kately, who averaged 13.1 points per game and placed in the MEAC s top 10 in both rebounding (5.9) average and field goal (.495) percentage, was named to the Preseason All-MEAC First Team. Joining the 6-5 senior on the preseason squad is teammate Reggie Holmes, who was selected to the All-MEAC Second Team. The Hampton Pirates, who received two first-place votes, followed the Bears in the balloting, while Delaware State is third. Norfolk State, who received a first-place vote, enters the preseason ranked fourth, followed by South Carolina State at fifth. The MEAC Tournament Champs of Coppin State enter the preseason as the sixth-ranked team followed by Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T, Howard, Bethune-Cookman an d Eastern Shore. Senior All-MEAC guard and 2008 Tournament MVP Tywain McKee was selected as the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year.

Shore Hill Field House - New Floor For This is the 34th season of play in Hill Field House. The Bears will open the season on a brand new wood floor that was installed earlier in this fall. The floor was designed by the MSU Athletics Department and made by Dura-Glo Flooring based out of Westbury, New York. Bear Schedule Morgan State s non-conference schedule for the season will once again be very challenging. The schedule will include match-ups against LaSalle, Ole Miss, DePaul, Utah, Manhattan,, St. Mary s. The Bears took on UMBC in their home-opener at Hill Field House. Non-Conference Schedule Morgan State will play on the road for all but one of their non conference games. The season will start in Philadelphia with LaSalle (11/15) followed by a trip to Riverdale, NY to face Manhattan (11/19). The Glenn Wilkes Classic will be held in Daytona Beach, FL (11/21-23) and the Bears will play Marshall, Utah and Wisconsin-Green Bay. MSU will finish up the seven-game stretch of away games when they head down south to play Ole Miss (11/29). The Bears will return home to Baltimore for a game against the Red Flash of St. Francis (12/1), and trek to the windy city of Chicago for a match up against DePaul (12/10). MSU will travel to the west coast to compete in the St. Mary s Tournament in Moraga, CA (12/26-28), before making one last stop at the Univ. of Washington (12/30) before returning home to face (1/7) at College Park. On February 7th MSU will have their last non-conference game of the season when they head to the Tar Heel state to face Winston-Salem State. Home Sweet Home Bozeman finished the season with a career record of in five seasons as a collegiate head coach. He is in his third season as the Bears head coach, including a sensational 23-5 mark in home games. In fact for the first time in school history the Bears finished the last season unbeaten at home as they posted an impressive 12-0 mark at Hill Field House, and recently had their 15-straight home winning streak snapped by St. Francis-Pa. in a loss on Dec. 1, Prior to the loss the Bears had not been defeated at home since a two-point loss to Hampton on Feb. 20, Trying To Get Another Winning MSU will attempt to do something it has not accomplished in over thirty years; they will try to record their first back-to-back winning season. The last time Morgan State finished with consecutive winning seasons was when they posted a record in , followed by a record in If they are able to accomplish consecutive wins it will mark the first time in their Division I history. MSU s longest consecutive winning streak in school history is 9 seasons, dating from to Transfers Morgan State s roster is the definition of diversity, with all the transfers from JUCO programs. Coach Bozeman has searched out the talents of five transfers to add to the Bears roster. With two successful rebuilding seasons under his belt Coach Bozeman looks to these young men with great expectations. Buford Foote ( C/6-9/215) - Transfer from Pensacola CC who hails from Atlanta, GA... He joins the Bears as a junior John Long (F/6-5/210) - Comes to the Bears locally from Hagerstown CC... He joins the Bears as a junior Troy Smith (G/6-4/195) - Transferred from Northeast J.C. (Colorado)... He is also a junior. Joseph Morgan (G/6-6/195) - Transfer from L.A. Trade Tech... Morgan hails from Watts, CA... Joins to Morgan as a junior. Rico Myles (F/6-5/228) - Also a transfer from L.A. Trade Tech... Myles hails from Los Angeles, CA... Was a teammate of Joseph Morgan... Joins Morgan as a junior. Assists-To-Baskets Scored; Assists-To-Turnovers Assist-to-Turnover ratio has been a common term in basketball for years, but one of the tenants Coach Bozeman has stressed is the Assist-to-Baskets Made principle. Last season, MSU had 355 assists and 804 made basketballs, a breakdown of 44.1 percent of made baskets having an assist to set them up In addition, MSU had 428 turnovers and ranked No. 2 in the MEAC in assist/turnover ratio (.83). The Bears currently rank 4th in the MEAC in assist/turnover ratio (0.8). O Canada The MSU season got off to an early start thanks to a two-game exhibition at the fourth annual NCAA/OUA Tip-Off Classic hosted by the University of Windsor in Canada over the Labor Day weekend The Bears played two games. The Bears fell to Western Ontario (85-78) and won against host school Windsor (70-59) MSU s decision to wait until the Labor Day Weekend to go on a trip outside the United States allowed the newcomers to join the veterans on the trip and allowed for a week of practice prior to leaving for Canada. Morgan State Reaches First NIT Tournament EVER Morgan State made its first appearance e in the NIT Tournament in school history. The Bears entered the contest without t injured standout Jamar Smith, the MEAC Player of the Year, and ended up losing to Virginia Tech in the First Round by a score of in Blacksburg, Virginia on March 19, Morgan State shot 43 percent from the field, while the Hokies shot a blistering 65 percent and hit 8-of-14 (57%) 3-pointers. Marquise Kately led the Bears with 11 first half points and finished with a team-high 21 points.

5 Holmes & Kately Shouldering the Load Senior forward Marquise Kately and junior guard Reggie Holmes are scoring most of the points for the Bears through 13 games. Kately is averaging 30.8 minutes, 9.8 points and a team-high 5.9 rebounds per game. Holmes leads the Bears in scoring (14.3 ppg) and is averaging 4.5 rebounds and 30.8 minutes per game. Marquise Kately scored in double-figures in 24-of-33 Morgan State games last year and ranked 13th in the MEAC in scoring a 12.5 ppg. He netted a career-high 22 against UMBC, 21 against Saint Francis and Virginia Tech. So far this season, Marquise posted 10 points and seven rebounds in the season-opener at Lasalle (11/15), a season-high 16 pts and with 6 rebounds in a win at Depaul (12/10) and 14 points (6-12 FG) at Washington (12/30). Overtime Morgan State played in four games that went into overtime during the season, only winning two of the contests...they defeated South Carolina State in the 2008 MEAC Quarterfinals (3/8) and won at Hampton (1/13)...The Bears fell to Delaware State in the MEAC Semi-Finals (3/9) and were defeated at N.C. A&T (2/19). In the Bears went 1-1 in OT. Morgan was defeated in overtime at Florida A&M (2/16), snapping the Bears 8-game winning streak, and dropped Hampton by a score of in overtime at Hill Field House (2/25). The Metropolitans Todd Bozeman s roster is comprised mostly of athletes from the Washington, DC, and Virginia areas. Senior point guard Jermaine Itchy Bolden, junior Reggie Holmes, and redshirt freshmen Kevin Thompson and Desmond Thomas are all from Baltimore, Md. Returning guard Rogers Barnes grew up in Columbia (Md.) Freshman Sean Thomas, is a Clinton, Md product, who was an All-MET guard at Gwynn Park High School Postseason Conversations While the MEAC is usually relegated to play-in purgatory (four of the last five years), the Morgan State Bears could reverse the 16-seed blues this season. In several mid-major polls last season, the Bears were ranked in the Top 25 as a result of strong showings against the Big East (4-pt loss at UConn) and ACC (4-pt loss at Miami). Todd Bozeman is the reigning MEAC Coach of the Year, and returns two key starters in All-MEAC forward Marquise Kately and sharpshooting guard Reggie Holmes. Road Warriors vs. Road Kill Morgan State is looking to improve its road fortunes under 3rd year head coach Todd Bozeman. The Bears finished the season with a 7-8 overall road record, and went 1-6 against non-conference opponents. 6 West Coast Connection Three Morgan State Bears have something else in common besides basketball, the state of California. Returning senior Marquise Kately is a California native. Raised in San Francisco, Kately graduated from Archbishop Riordan. Joseph Morgan and Rico Myles are two new transfers from Los Angeles Trade Tech where they helped lead their team to back-to-back championships. The duo grew up in the Los Angeles area. Morgan from Watts, and Myles a product of Crenshaw. This season the Bears will return to their home state of California when Morgan State participates in the St. Mary s Tournament in Moraga, California (12-26/28). Bears Sharing the Pill Morgan State finished the season with 355 assists thru 33 games, with plus assists four times, Ohio Valley (15), Winston- Salem State (15), South Carolina State (16) and Hampton (15)... Jerrell Green dished out a seasonhigh 9 assists against Delaware State (2/4)... Jermaine Itchy Bolden added a career-high 8 assists against Ohio Valley (11/8/2007)... The Bears finished the season ranked 7th in the MEAC by averaging 10.8 assists per contest. The Bears are currently ranked 4th in the MEAC averaging 10.3 assists thru their first 13 contests... Jermaine Itchy Bolden is leading the way averaging a MEAC-best 4.7 assists per game. Point Production The Bears finished the regular season ranked 4th in the MEAC in scoring offense (67.5 ppg) and had their best offensive output of the season when they hung 93-points in a win against -Eastern Shore. So far this season their highest output was a 79-point performance in a win at DePaul. Holmes-Work Junior Reggie Holmes, one of the top sixth men in the MEAC, had 19 double-figure scoring games off the bench last season. Picking up where he left off at the end of last season, Holmes has had a hot shooting touch in the Bears first 11 games, averaging a team-high 14.2 points, good for 5th in the MEAC. The Preseason All-MEAC 2nd Team selection has scored in double-figures in all but two game so far this season, including a season-high 29 in a win against DePaul (12/10). Holmes also collected his first career doubledouble when he posted 11 points and a careerhigh 10 rebounds against Wisconsin-Green Bay (11/23). Holmes was instrumental in last season s run to the NIT last season, averaging 12.9 points, 3.3 rebs and shot 36.7 percent from three point territory. Missing In Action Morgan State guards alone missed a combined total 22 games last season due to injuries: 11 by Rogers Barnes; 3 Jermaine Itchy Bolden; 3 by Jamar Smith; and 2 by Jerrell Green. Bears Volunteered For Thanksgiving Morgan State Head Coach Todd Bozeman and his players volunteered as food servers on Thanksgiving Day at Patterson Park Recreation Center in Baltimore during an annual event honoring the memory of Bea Gaddy. Bea Gaddy is locally revered for her work in providing the homeless with a meal on Thanksgiving. Since her passing in 2001 due to breast cancer, numerous people have come together to maintain her legacy of giving. MSU S NCAA History Morgan State has played in the NCAA Tournament before, however it was the NCAA Division II Tournament... The Bears defeated Southwest Missouri State to capture the Division II National Championship Title... The Bears finished the season with a 28-5 record under head coach Nathaniel Frazier. Winning The Turnover Battle Key In each of the Bears three wins, they have tied or had less turnovers than their opponents, while in they have posted more turnovers four of their five losses. In fact, Morgan State has forced an average of 15 or more turnovers in each game thus far, including a season-high 19 in the season-opener against LaSalle (11/15). Morgan State enters the Washington contest ranked 2nd in the MEAC with a +2.2 turnover margin. New Addition Kevin Thompson has been a key contibutor in the paint this season for the Bears. The redshirt freshman is averaging 8.8 ppg and is the team s second leading rebounder averaging 6.5 boards per game. The Baltimore product has recorded six double-figure games and has posted two double-doubles (points & rebounds) on the season. He will enter the Washington contest fresh off of a career-high 18 point performance against Saint Mary s Sunday night. Three-Point Notes After 22 years with the three-point line at 19 feet, 9 inches, the NCAA Rules Committee has shifted the arc back a foot to 20 feet, 9 inches for men s college basketball this year (the women s line is still 19-9). In their first game playing with the new line, Morgan State and LaSalle (11/15) combined to hit 12-of-31 tries from that distance. In 13 regularseason games, MSU and its opponents have combined to make 32.5 percent of their threepoint tries (Bears 31.9 pct., opponents 33.2). MSU has made an average of 5.2 opponents 4.8. Thompson Selected MEAC Rookie of the Week Redshirt freshman Kevin Thompson was selected as the MEAC Rookie of the Week, for the week ending December 28, Thompson, a 6-8 forward from Walbrook HS, recorded 25 points in two non-conference games. He grabbed six rebounds and blocked five shots in a win over William Jessup. He followed that performance with a season-high 18 points and six rebounds against St. Mary s (CA) in the Championship of the Office Solutions Shamrock Classic. 7 TODD BOZEMAN Head Coach 3rd Year at MSU Overall Record In just two seasons at the helm, Todd Bozeman has posted one of the most dramatic turnarounds in NCAA history by turning perennial doormat Morgan State into a Mid-major power. The Bears reached the No. 17 position in the College Insider Mid-major polls and was ranked as high as No. 7 in the Washington Post Atlantic 11 poll. After a 7-8 start, the Bears reeled off an incredible eight straight victories, equaling its longest winning streak since 1975, and closed out the regular season by winning 13 of their last 14 regular season games. The team also proved it could compete against some of the nation s best teams, as it suffered four-point losses at UConn and Miami, and were outlasted by Seton Hall by 8-points earlier during the season. Morgan State men s basketball coach Todd Bozeman was selected the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. This is the first time since joining the MEAC that Bozeman has been named Coach of the Year by the league s coaches and sports information directors. The last Morgan State coach to win the award was head coach Nathaniel Frazier in The Bears finished with a regular season record, posting the most Division I victories in school history and the best overall record in over 30 years. The team, a preseason pick to finish 4th in the league, won its first-ever MEAC regular season title and advanced to the league tournament championship for the first time since Morgan State had never won a regular season title at any level, and its only previous MEAC crown came in 1977 when it won the conference tournament en route to the Division II Final Four. Bozeman concluded the year by taking the Bears to their first Division I postseason appearance in history when they earned a postseason tournament appearance in the NIT. Bozeman finished the season with a career record of in five seasons as a collegiate head coach. He is in his two seasons as the Bears head coach, including a sensational 21-4 mark in home games. In fact for the first time in school history the Bears finished the season unbeaten at home as they posted an impressive 12-0 mark at Hill Field House. Morgan State featured one of the most dynamic rosters in the league. The Bears had the MEAC s top ranked point guard Jerrell Green in addition to one of the top 3-point sharp-shooters in the league with sophomore Reggie Holmes. The Bears did not have a single player selected to the Preseason All-MEAC team, but finished the season with the 2008 MEAC Player of the Year Jamar Smith, MEAC Defensive Player of the Year Boubacar Coly, and All-MEAC second team selection Marquise Kately. During the season Morgan State was predicted to finish 10th in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), however, Bozeman guided the Bears to a overall record and finished tied for 3rd place in the conference in his first season at the helm. Bozeman led the Bears to the 2007 MEAC Semi-Finals and was one game away from the Championship. Bozeman, widely regarded as one of the bright young minds in basketball, began his coaching duties April 27, 2006 and became the 15th head coach in Morgan State history. Prior to joining the Morgan State Bears, Bozeman spent two seasons as a college basketball analyst and conducted camps and clinics in South America and Africa. Bozeman also spent three seasons in the NBA as the advance scout for the Toronto Raptors where he not only scouted upcoming opponents but also coordinated and oversaw the Summer Player development program. Prior to the Raptors, Bozeman spent a season scouting for the Vancouver Grizzlies, who are now the Memphis Grizzlies. Bozeman also spent time strengthening his ties with college coaches and familiarized himself with the top youth players as a coach at the AAU level. Bozeman took the college basketball world by storm after taking over the Cal program in mid-season 1993; he led the Golden Bears to an 11-2 finish and a surprise berth in the NCAA Tournament; including an upset of defending national champion Duke and a Sweet 16 berth to cap Cal s best NCAA Tournament run since As the head coach of the University of California-Berkeley, Bozeman led the Golden Bears to three NCAA Tournament bids in four years, and was the youngest coach to ever reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Within the Pac-10, Bozeman s Bears became the first school in conference history to win three straight games over UCLA in Pauley Pavilion, and was the first school to take back-to-back games over Arizona in McKale Center in more than a decade. In four seasons as a head coach, he led Cal to a record (64.3 pct.) and guided the Golden Bears to three top 4 finishes in the Pac-10. Bozeman was instrumental in building Cal into one of the elite programs in NCAA basketball and nurtured the development of future NBA stars Jason Kidd, Lamond, Murray, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Sean Marks, Ed Gray, Tremaine Fowlkes, Michael Stewart and the college basketball career of the NFL s Tony Gonzales. Bozeman arrived at Cal in 1990 after spending two seasons as an assistant to Perry Clark at Tulane ( ). While a member of the Tulane staff, Bozeman played a major role in the rebuilding of the Green Wave basketball program. He also served as an assistant to Ernie Nestor at George Mason before taking the assistant job at Tulane.
