6 NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY PRE-SEASON BASKETBALL OUTLOOK The Wolfpack, which ended UCLA s domination of collegiate basketball last season, appears to have an excellent chance of successfully defending its national championship. Four starters David Thompson, Monte Towe, Moe Rivers and Tim Stoddard return from the club that defeated the Bruins and Marquette in the NCAA title round last year while enroute to a brilliant 30-1 record, leaving coach Norm Sloan with a decidedly optimistic perspective. "It s obvious that we have a solid team returning, says Sloan, the AP s Coach-of-the-Year last season. "But it s also obvious that we lost a great player in Tommy Burleson, our big center. We cannot minimize his loss. I hope our recruiting (which includes 6-7 Kenny Carr) will offset his absence. Ifthis turns out to be true, then we should have another fine basketball team. Topping the list of eight returning lettermen is the incomparable Thompson, a unanimous All-America selection two years in a row and last season s Player-of-the-Year on both the conference and national level. An artist who sends sportswriters searching the dictionary for new adjectives virtually every time he takes the floor, the amazing Thompson is a coach s dream come true excelling in every phase of the game with his tremendous leaping ability, timing, quickness and uncanny shooting accuracy. In addition, he s the epitome of a team player, often passing the ball despite being in position for the high percentage shot. Even so, he paced the Pack last season with a 26.0 point average, tops in the Atlantic Coast Conference and fifth best in the nation. Towe and Rivers give the Wolfpack as fine a backcourt pair as there is in the country. The 5-foot-7 Towe befuddles opponents with his ability to dribble out of tight spots, knock in 35-foot bombs (12.8 scoring average) and heave court-length passes with pinpoint accuracy. Rivers specializes on defensive and has such talented hands that he easily qualifies as the quickest draw anywhere east of the Rockies. He scored at a 12.1 clip last season. The fourth returning starter, Tim Stoddard, matured late last season and was a fine all-around player down the stretch, especially on defense and in rebounding. Other lettermen returning are forward Phil Spence, an excellent board man, and guards Mark Moeller, Craig Kuszmaul and Dwight Johnson. State basketball coach Norman Sloan has an nounced the signing of three high school standouts to grants-in-aid for the coming school year. The players, in the order in which they signed with the Wolfpack, are 5-10 guard Craig Davis, 6-2 guard Robert Jackson, 6-7 forward Kenny Carr. "I m very pleased with our signings, said Sloan. "These 3 players will meet our immediate needs, as well as contribute to the future of the program. The guards, Davis and Jackson, both come to State from high schools which sent the Wolfpack a forward on last year s NCAA title team. Davis played scholastically at Peary High School in Rockville, Md., where the now-graduated Steve Nuce also played. Jackson follows senior Tim Stoddard to State after a stellar career at Washington High School in East Chicago, Ind. Carr, from DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Md., was one of the most highly sought players in the nation. A scholastic all-america player, he participated in a postseason all-star game representing Washington, DC, against a group of US. all-stars. Davis, a diminutive guard cut in the Monte Towe mold, was Metro Washington s Most Valuable Player in the same all-star game against US stars in which Carr played. The group will combine with 13 returnees from last year s team which finished 30-1, and won the Wolfpack s second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference crown on the way to the NCAA championship.
