Badgers Confident to Begin Challenging Season By Andrew Kluger The Badger Herald November 1, 2005 Following a 2004 campaign that saw the Badgers finish 15th at the NCAA Championships, Wisconsin s wrestling team enters the season donning similar expectations, as UW entered the preseason ranking at No. 15 in the nation. Nine Big Ten teams enter this season ranked in the top-25 with Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesotaall ranked in the top-10, and sitting at the top of one of the most dominate conferences in collegiate wrestling. Last week the Badgers locked up their lineup at the intersquad wrestleoffs, where weight classes with more than one wrestler on the depth chart contested for spots in the starting lineup. It s never easy wrestling with someone you wrestle with every day at practice, said UW wrestler Matt Maciag. You know each other s moves, strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes I wish we could solve it another way, but there s so much depth at all the classes that this is the only way so let the best man win. At 174 the Badgers will turn to senior captain Kelly Flaherty, who finished last season with a strong performance and a fifth place finish in the Big Ten Championship. Coach Davis is confident with his team this year and expects good production from all his weight classes. While the Badgers will be bringing back nearly all of last year s wrestlers, the team still remains on the younger side at many positions and will have to learn as they go. We have a lot of young guys competing this year but we also got some experience coming back, Davis said. We have to continue to wrestle well while we wait for some guys to come back from their injuries but I m confident in our guys to improve from last year. The wrestling season gets underway Nov. 4 when the Badgers take on U W-Oshkosh in Green Bay. Big Ten action opens up Nov. 20 when W isconsin takes on Penn State. At the 133-pound weight class Josh Crass earned a starting spot that was all but locked up by returning All-American Tom Clum. But prior the season, Clum, who enters the season ranked as the third best wrestler in the nation at the 133-pound weight class, suffered a wrist injury, opening the door for Crass. Clum, the highest ranked Badger in any poll, took third place at the 2005 NCAA Championships and the Big Ten Championships and had season record of 28-5 overall last season. Despite the injury to his All-American, head coach Barry Davis remains confident the job can be successfully filled. I m confident right now. We have Josh Crass and some other guys who are going to step in at 133, Davis said. They re a little inexperienced right now but I m fully confident in those guys to step in and do a good job. At the 141-pound weight class, Ed Gutnik will man the starting job after a successful 2004 season at the 133-pound weight class. Gutnik compiled a overall record last season, going 5-3 in the Big Ten. The senior is coming off his second trip to the NCAA Championshipsafter a third place finish in the Big Ten championship. Also earning their starting spot last week was Tyler Turner at the 149- pound weight class as well as Matt Maciag and Dallas Herbst at the 184- pound and 197-pound weight classes respectively. Maciag, a junior from Sussex, New Jersey, wrestled at both 197 and 184 last season and is looking to improve on his 9-9 overall record and contribute to the success of the Badgers. Last year we did alright, obviously not as well as we liked. We got some new guys in the lineup this year and we only lost one senior so we definitely expect to do better than we did last year when we finished 15, and hopefully will break into the top ten, Maciag said.

Time is Now For Highly-Touted Wisconsin Class Elite Recruiting Class Gets Chance to Break Into Lineup After Redshirt year; CKLV Collegiate Wrestling Invite Could Be First Major Test By Ryan Dunn The Wrestling Mall November 7, 2005 Two years ago Barry Davis W isconsin Badgers pulled in what many pundits called the nation s best recruiting class. And after all but one of the recruits spent their first year in Madison as a redshirt, they are poised to take the mats this year and live up to their billing, and in the process, move the Badgers to the upper echelon of the Big 10. As Davis points out, the main thing the highly touted recruits bring to the room is depth and competition. I know our room has a lot more depth, there s a lot more competition in the room, due to the last two recruiting classes and that s helped us tremendously, and that s been a big, big difference in Wisconsin wrestling, Davis said at the Wisconsin wrestling media day last week. The Badgers kicked off their season with a dual meet against U W-Oshkosh Friday in Green Bay, defeating the Titans While the Badger lineup is still being set, and with the goal of keeping many of the starters fresh for the long, grueling season, several new faces took to the mat for Wisconsin. Five wrestlers from that prized recruiting class represented the Badgers and won Dan Sneider (133), Zach Tanelli (141), Craig Henning (157), Dallas Herbst (197) and Kyle Massey (HWT.). True freshman Kyle Reeve (125) also saw action and is one of many bright spots highlighting the 04 class, which has given Davis his finest two-year run of recruits since taking over at Wisconsin in It was good last year to be able to take those guys and redshirt those guys, said Davis. They re under the radar right now, not a lot of pressure. Now they come in and can contend for spots. But it goes back to the depth and the competition within the room is good, and you need that to make your team rise to a whole new level and I think that s what s going to help us down the line in March when it comes to the Big Ten (Tournament) and the NCAA s. In addition to the above wrestlers, other freshmen eager to help the Badgers this season are Justin Peterson (184), and twins Josh (133) and Jordan Crass ( ), the latter returning from a minor preseason injury. Many of these wrestlers will get their first taste of elite-level competition when they compete at the 2005 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate W restling Invitational Dec. 2-3 at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas. The Badgers finished ninth at last year s tournament, and are looking to move up this year.they will also get a chance to see a glimpse of many of their Big Ten counterparts this year. In addition to the Badgers, Big Ten teams Illinois, Michigan (defending tournament champion), Ohio State, and Purdue will compete in Las Vegas. Team captain and starting 174 pounder Kelly Flaherty, a two-time national qualifier agrees with Davis assessment on the team s depth and the role it plays in making everyone in the room a better wrestler. I think we ll do really well, we re finally getting enough guys in the room where we have a lot of depth, where we re not just solid at one level. Now if somebody gets hurt, we have somebody that can back them up, which makes practice much more intense, that s really good to see, he said. Craig Henning was the lone wrestler from the 03 recruiting class not to redshirt last year, and was the starter at 149. He compiled a record, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Big 10 Conference Tournament. His season came to a disappointing end however, when he went 1-2 at the NCAA Tournament and finished short of All-American honors. According to Davis, Henning is just one of the wrestlers that need to step up in order for the Badgers to make a push into the top five in Las Vegas, and up the ranks nationally. I think this team s potential is pretty high, said Davis. But guys like (Collin) Cudd, guys like (Ed) Gutnik, (Jake) Donar, Henning, Kelly Flaherty, guys who ve never been All-Americans, they ve got to come through, they ve got to step up. And I think they re doing that now; the big difference between last year and this year is they made some big changes during the summer, some more even this fall. Henning and team captain Tyler Turner have swapped weight classes this year, with Henning moving up from 149 to 157, and Turner dropping down a weight class to 149 afterstarting for the Badgers the past two seasons at 157, qualifying for nationals last year. Turner is eager for the chance to prove himself in a new weight class, but also feels the move was best for team. W isconsin must overcome the loss of All-American Tom Clum early in the season. Over the summer I really trimmed down, so I lost a little weight, and it s best for the team to go down, says Turner. (It) makes it a tough, solid team throughout. I m real excited for it, I m excited to wrestle some different people, different styles, it s a real competitive weight class, and I m looking forward to it, that s for sure. In the Big-10 there s (Eric) Tannenbaum, (Ty) Eustice, but any Big-10 school s got a decent 49-pounder,soit s not going to be easy and that s what makes it so exciting for me; just the challenge that every match you re going to wrestle in the Big-10 s is going to be a great match, it s going to be a 1-2 point match, and you need to push it past the edge to get that win, Turner added. The Badgers are ranked 18th in The Wrestling Mall s preseason polls after finishing 15th at the NCAA s last season. While Davis acknowledges that his team has a ways to go in order to move up in their rankings, he does feel they are right where they need to be, provided the team continues to get better each day. I think we can be a lot better than we are now, for sure, said Davis. Can we squeeze into the top four or five? It s a possibility, (it) depends if guys come around, everyone s got to do their job and continue to improve.

W isconsin crowned two All-Americans at last year s national championships, Tom Clum (133) and Ryan Flaherty (197). Clum is ranked #2 in The Wrestling Mall s preseason polls, but will be out six weeks while he recovers from a hand injury. His status for the CKLV Invite at this time is questionable, and he recently withdrew from competing in the NWCA All- Star Classic Nov. 21, where he was scheduled to face Minnesota s Mack Reiter. As for Flaherty, he will be out the entire season, putting a premature end to his collegiate wrestling career. Craig Henning moves from 149 to 157 this season where he is expected to be a big part of any success Wisconsin has. While the Badgers will miss Ryan s services on the mat, twin brother Kelly, says he will miss him in other ways. It s hard for me; he s always wrestled with me, says Kelly Flaherty. I l catch myself wanting to ask him to come workout with me at night or something, but now I have to call somebody else up, where as with him I always knew he would be there, I wouldn t have to plan it or anything if I wanted at the last minute to come and workout, he was always there. Which makes the depth Davis and his staff have built up over the last few years that much more important. And according to the head coach, the Badgers must now utilize that depth and talent that have come to Madison to wrestle in the nation s toughest conference. Ithinkit s time Wisconsin starts bringing home the hardware from the NCAAChampionships, and I think we have the guys in the room that are going to do that, but we ve got to perform at that time at the end of the year, said Davis. They ll get some good preparation for that time of the year in Las Vegas, where the once-prized recruiting class of the Badgers will have itsfirst chance to shine through.

By Ryan Dunn The Wrestling Mall November 27, 2005 Big Test A waits Wisconsin Badgers in Las Vegas This Weekend Barry Davis Badgers Looking To Show College Wrestling World They Are For Real in Nation s Toughest Early Season Tournament Friday and Saturday As the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational approaches the tournament takes place Friday and Saturday at the Cashman Center - the Wisconsin Badgers continue to fine-tune their line up in hopes of placing high at the nation s most prestigious early season tournament. The Badgers crowned three champions in the Open Division of the Pointer Open November 13th and defeated Lock Haven (45-3) and Penn State (19-15) November Last season the Badgers placed 9th at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite and look to improve upon that finish this season Head Coach Barry Davis is excited about the tournament and the opportunity it brings to not only gauge his wrestlers, but also to see teams he won t have a chance to see again until the national tournament in March. Ithinkit s good because you see a lot of teams you don t normally see, a lot of West Coast teams, a lot of Pac-10 teams, you get some teams from the East Coast, says Davis. Hofstra comes in, Harvard comes in; so you get a chance to see a lot of schools you don t normally see, which is nice. You get a chance to see guys before the NCAA championships, which I think is very important. Plus, it s a tough tournament, you get a lot of matches in, there are a lot of ranked guys out there, so you get a chance to move guys up the rankings and see guys you wouldn t normally see. The Badger captains Kelly Flaherty,Tyler Turner and Tom Clum - share their head coach s sentiments about seeing other teams and competing in what is perhaps the nation s toughest tournament outside of the NCAA s. Flaherty, a senior, failed to place in the top eight last year at 174 pounds and returns at the same weight this season. Well aware of last season s disappointment, Flaherty is excited to have a better tournament this time around yet at the same time, won t lose confidence if he doesn t have the tournament he expects himself to have. You kick off the season in a big tournament, you see a lot of guys, I think that llpartly show where we re at as a team, said Flaherty. Ithinkwe ll knock some people off, we ll do better than we re expected to do. If I do badly out there, it s not going to be the end of the season, Flaherty continued. Last year I did not wrestle very well out there, I had some bad matches, I lost to some people I shouldn t have lost to. Obviously I don t plan on doing that again, but if I do I m not going to let that affect the end of my season. It s competitive, that s for sure, said Turner. It s exciting since we don t see a lot of those teams during our season, we ll see them there and we ll see them at the NCAA s. We don t see a lot of the East Coast or West Coast teams, so it s great to see what s going on around the nation. You can learn about where you are, it s the beginning of the season, the first big tournament. If this guy s supposed to be number one in the nation, and he just beat me, or I beat him, where should I be? It s a great indicator of what s going to happen and especially what you need to work towards. If you re ahead of the guy, you ve got to stay there, if you re behind him you ve got to pick it up a little bit. There are lots of great, ranked wrestlers, so it makes it fun. Clum, a senior, is a returning All-American after placing 3rd at last season s national championships at 133. While he will be unable to wrestle at the invite due to a preseason injury, he shares the same thoughts as his teammates. I m really looking forward to the Cliff Keen for, if nothing else, just to see some of the match-ups out there, said Clum. I m especially excited to have a chance to see my brother. I don t get to see him wrestle much and itkillsme. Clum s brother Danny is a sophomore at the University of Wyoming, one of the many other teams that will be in attendance; he wrestles at 157. Anytime you wrestle such a competitive tournament it forces you to be at the top of your game, to be crisp, and for me that is sometimes more difficult to do early in the year. I ve been a slow starter the last few years, it s something I realize and have been fixing going into this season, Clum added. W isconsin features a number of wrestlers ranked in the top-20 of their respective weight classes. One wrestler who is eager to have a good tournament is Craig Henning, who flip-flopped with Turner and is now competing at 157 pounds. Heavyweight Kyle Massey is also a wrestler to watch as the Badgers look to solidify a spot in the lineup that has been a problem the past few years. The Badgers are also a very youthful team, and will most likely enter just two seniors into the Cliff Keen Invite. I think our team is better than we get credit for, said Clum. I realize that respect is earned and we plan on earning it this season. But I think that we can do very well. And what better place for a wrestler to test his mettle and earn respect than at the CKLV Invite, with nearly 50 different teams competing. Turner is just a junior, but this is his second season serving as one of the Badger captains. He placed 7th a year ago in Las Vegas at 157, but has cut down to 149 this year in an effort to make the Badgers a better team overall. Turner is 4-0 on the young season and is anticipating the tournament and will use it as a measuring stick to judge where he s at, and what he needs to do to get where he wants to be.

Injury Forces Wisconsin All-American Out of CKLV Invite, Out of Potential Matchup With Edinboro s Shawn Bunch and Cal Poly s Darrell Vasquez By Ryan Dunn The Wrestling Mall November 27, 2005 Ask wrestling fans who the favorites are this year at 133 and they re bound to mention 2005 NCAA runner-up Shawn Bunch of Edinboro. They ll certainly mention All-American Mack Reiter, last year s Big Ten Champion and Freshman of the Year; and now, Darrell Vasquez of Cal Poly, who returns after a year off due to illness and who defeated Reiter at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Eventually they ll get around to mentioning Tom Clum from the University of Wisconsin. Clum, a senior, always seems to get mentioned later, despite the fact he defeated Reiter both times they wrestled last year, once during the Wisconsin/Minnesota dual meet, and for third place at the NCAA s. But as far as he is concerned, it s really not that big of a deal. It s always nice to get recognition; however, this is not something that bothers me, says Clum. I recognize that a lot of these guys have fans and have a following, but I know that any of us on the right day could win the NCAA s, he said. Despite the low profile, Clum enters the year ranked second in The W restling Mall s preseason polls; but whether he s ranked second, or not atall,it s not something that has any bearing on him whatsoever. I come to the mat with the same mentality regardless of polls or people s opinions, says Clum. I m out there to wrestle my best, and I don t think I could remain consistent if my mentality could be persuaded as easily as from somebody else s opinion. A preseason wrist injury has sidelined Clum, and because of that he won t be able to compete at the 2005 CKLV Collegiate Wrestling Invite, Friday and Saturday at the Cashman Center. Those same fans who often forget about Clum, would love to see him in a weight class that is expected to also include both Bunch and Vasquez; #6-ranked Drew Headlee of Pittsburgh, and #8 Scott Jorgensen of Boise State, among others. According to Clum s head coach Barry Davis the low profile that follows Clum is simply an extension of the kind of person he is, and this also tends to aid him as a wrestler. Tom s a low key individual, he doesn t look for a lot of attention, says Davis. He just tries to go out and do his job, you know he s not really flamboyant. If you look at him, he doesn t really look like a lot, he s just not that way; he s kind of skinny, but he s just built that way. Some wrestlers are really jacked up; I think people overlook him sometimes because of that. But he is very strong, and he s a great technician. Clum enters his final year in Madison with a career record. He s qualified for the national tournament each of the last three seasons, and has had mixed results. His freshman year he stepped in midseason for the injured Kevin Black and wrestled up a weight at 133 and was one match away from gaining All-American status. His sophomore year saw him back down at his natural weight of 125 and he became a Big Ten conference champion and earned a number four seed at nationals. However, he lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament and won just one match during the consolations, falling well short of the top eight. Going into his junior year, both he and the coaches decided it was best he move up a weight, and it paid dividends. While he didn t defend his Big Ten crown during the conference tournament, he won five of six matches at the NCAA s, falling only to eventual champion Travis Lee of Cornell in the semifinals. Clum will use the knowledge and experience of his first three years to hopefully elevate him to the national title in March. I think over the last three years I ve come a long way, both in my technical ability and my mental approach, said Clum. I ve worked a ton with Barry the last few years and through that I have learned a sort of confidence that allows me to relax and really wrestle. I ve never been one to get particularly nervous, but I can see things coming together this year which will be huge in March. While he ll be out until January with a hand/wrist injury, he will continue to serve as one of the team s captains and will aid his teammates from the sidelines. Ask both Davis and Clum, and they ll each say that while he may not be a vocal leader, he more than makes up for it by leading through example with his drive, work ethic, and will to succeed. I think that a hard worker rubs off on his teammates regardless of whether or not he s a captain, and we have a lot of hard workers on our team, said Clum. I have seen the intensity in the room rise every year I ve been here at Wisconsin. This team really performs on their own motivation, we all have a common goal and we get along real well in and out of the room. I ve never been a vocal guy on the team, but I m not necessarily quiet and reserved either, I m just one of the guys. Davis added, He s always studying film, looking for ways to get better, finddifferent ways to figure out his opponents. When you have the type of leadership like that, it rubs off on a lot on the other guys. He ll share anything with anybody in the room because he wants his teammates to get better along with himself, he figures the better you are the better I m going to become, soit s better all the way around. Clum s leadership is vital in developing the new crop of Badger wrestlers. Each of the last two seasons has seen Davis and his staff bring in a bevy of top talent to Madison. Clum recalls his first year in Madison and the wrestler that most had an influence on him. When I first came to Wisconsin I can remember how much I looked up to Donny Prizlaff (two-time national champion for the Badgers), he was still around even though he finished competing the year before, said Clum. Donny was different, he set a tone, when he said something I lis-

tened, he just really set an example. But he didn t have to try to do that, he just was. That s somebody I learned a lot from, added Clum. I m not saying that I am to these guys what Donny was to me. I would like to be a guy in the room that the younger guys look up to, but I don t want them to feel that I m set apart. I m still their teammate, we all make sure that each other come to practice ready to wrestle. As wrestlers are a tightly-knit bunch, so to is Clum s family. Hailing from Arvada, Col., Clum doesn t get home much but when he does, he values the time he gets to spend with his family. If I go home for a week during Christmas I m hunting with my dad and brother five of those days, said Clum. I come from a real close family. His brother Danny is the starter at 157 pounds for the University of W yoming. We are as close as brothers could be being so far apart, and the only reason I look forward to finishing up with college is to go home and spend time with him and my family, Tom Clum said. And for one more chance to win a national championship. When mentioning big names, Clum is often overlooked. By standing on top of the podium in March, he could be overlooked no more.
