April, May, June 2012 Newsletter Message From The President Spring is well on its way and I don t know about you but I ll be happy for it to arrive. We really can t complain about the winter we ve had, especially since I saw our crocuses, hyacinths and tulips popping their heads through the ground in early February, but I m a warm weather person so I m ready for spring to be here and stay. Some might think they can have more time for weaving in the winter when they are confined to the indoors, but I can find time to weave and enjoy doing it any time of the year. No, spring does not mean house-cleaning time to me, I ve learned that there are many other just-as- important things that I want to do in this life-time Hope you re looking forward to weaving with the guild this year. Our program committee has some very interesting baskets and projects for you so I hope you can find time to attend a couple of the meetings. Some will be taught by our members and we have at least one instructor from out of the area that is a very well- known teacher. We are happy to announce that we have 7 guest instructors scheduled for our 6th Annual retreat to be held October 26, 27 & 28. They are Bonnie Gale, Karen Griffith, Anne Coleman, Anne Bowers, Elaine Sinclair, Tom Holtkamp and Angie Wagner. We re presently working on the brochure and are planning to have it completed by the second week in April.
At least 3 of our guild members will be attending the North Carolina Basket Makers convention in March and 9 members plan to travel to Indiana for the Stateline retreat. We really enjoy meeting all the Basketweavers at these functions and always learn some new techniques to bring home and teach others. If you're ever interested in attending any on these retreats, I would be happy to pass the information on to you. Most of them require reservations 4-6 months ahead of time. If you haven t renewed your membership for 2012, please do so by March 15 if you wish to receive the July- Aug- Sept issue of this newsletter. Weaving Friendships, Myrna Shaw Board of Directors Myrna Shaw, President Denise Jay, Secretary Kathy Mirfin, Treasurer Karon Ash, Member at Large Carolyn Cottle, Member at Large Chairpersons Program Chairperson: Judy Appleby Newsletter: Beverly Geller Barbara Hammonds, V-President Melinda DeYong, Asst. Secretary Publicist: Dorene Beckley Bonnie Basko, Member at Large Membership Chairperson: Karon Ritchey Historian: Linda Dennie Web Master: Beverly Geller Looking Ahead Bonnie Basko and Linda Dennie will be spear-heading our Your Safe Haven basket project and will have the kits ready to distribute sometime in the spring. Baskets will need to be woven and returned to them by October. If you would like to help with this volunteer project, please call Bonnie at or Linda at Membership Currently the membership of our guild is thirty-seven members representing the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia. We are happy to welcome into our guild two new members in 2012, Carri Mowry from Manassas, Virginia and Karen Roseberger from Three Springs, Pennsylvania. Please make sure that you welcome Carri and Karen to our guild when you see them at our meetings.
Guild Projects for April, May and June Saturday April 14th Cross and Crown will be taught by Denise Jay. This basket starts with a 9 square base, and the finished size will be 11 high with a 10 diameter. Students will unweave the corners of the base and upset the basket making an 8 cornered base. The basket will round to the top. An 8 strand braid lashing Crowns the rim creating a unique and interesting pattern. Hence the name: Cross and Crown Basket. This is an advanced-beginner level basket. Cost is $45.00 for members and $50.00 for non-members. A $25.00 deposit is due by March 23rd along with your choice of accent colors which are wine, green, black or all natural. Mail deposits to: Denise Jay, 2035 Clear Ridge Road, Artemas, PA "Cross and Crown" Friday May 11th and Saturday May 12 Guest instructor Char Ciammaichella will be with us for the weekend. On Friday May 11th Char will be teaching the Four Seasons Basket. This basket is woven on a wooden base in the start/stop method. Spokes of alternating colors will be woven in a specific pattern. A stitch pattern is added and used to tie on the seasonal tie-ons. You can rotate the seasonal tie-ons included with this class as the seasons change. The size is 6 X 11 X 8 high. Class will begin at 4:30 PM but for those working you may come a little later. This is as advanced beginner level and the cost is $ Please make your check payable to Char Ciammaichella and mail to: Judy Appleby, 501 West Frick Road, Waterfall, PA no later than April 9th.
4 Seasons Tie-ons "Four Seasons Basket" Saturday May 12th Char will be giving you a choice of two baskets. Chains in Black will be offered in black or green and will be woven on a wooden base. This basket features a 3-rod arrow or triple twining; care will be taken to keep the round reed weavers from twisting so that you have a nice arrow pattern. The curl pattern is added after the basket is woven. Skill level is Intermediate. The finished size is 9 x 12 X 7 ½ high. "Chains in Green" "Opposites Attract" Opposites Attract can be woven as a storage basket with a wooden handle or a tote with leather strap handles. Dyed and natural spokes will be alternated as well as dyed and natural weavers to create great color patterning. Please state if you want leather or a wooden handle when registering. The finished size is 12 ½ X 7 X 11 high. This basket is suitable for all levels of weaving experience. The cost for either "Chains in Black" or "Opposites Attract" offered on Saturday is $63.00 and class will begin at 9:00 AM. Make check payable to Char Ciammaichella and mail to: Judy Appleby, 501 West Frick Road, Waterfall, PA no later than April 9th. Be sure to state which basket you plan to make and for Opposites Attract, state your choice of handles.
June 9th- Our Annual Dye Party will be held at Dorene Beckley s home at 9:00 AM. Participants should bring reed to dye, a lawn chair and a covered dish to share for lunch. If you do not wish to dye reed, bring a project to work on or just come for a fun-filled day. Cost is $5.00 and you can mail your check to Dorene Beckley, 591 Weicht Road, Artemas, PA, by May 30th.
