1 COACHING LEGENDS W ith a basketball history that began in 1906 when Loyola Marymount University was then known as St. Vincent s College, many former Lions have written chapters in the history book of collegiate basketball. Part of that basketball history is the lineage of coaching greats that have worn the Crimson and Navy uniform of the Lions. Peter Newell, perhaps one of the alltime legendary coaches in collegiate basketball history, was a Lion from Serving as a mentor to many of the current coaching greats, including Bobby Knight, Newell s teaching of the game of basketball has been second to none. Newell led the University of San Francisco to the 1949 NIT championship before moving to the University of California. At Cal, he led the Bears to the 1957 NCAA championship with a 25-4 record. In six seasons at Cal he posted a record of (.730) and finished with a career record of in 14 seasons as a head coach. He added to his legend when he led the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team to the 1960 Olympic gold medal. He also served as a general manager for the Los Angeles Lakers and San Diego Rockets. His annual Big Man s camp, attended by pro and amateur basketball players, became an institution in the basketball ranks. Newell was recognized by LMU at the first annual men s basketball tip-off dinner last November. Newell is just one of many former Lions to make an impressive mark in the coaching ranks, one that continues today. Joining Newell as a coach to win a national title from LMU was Phil Woolpert, who played on the same team as Newell. Woolpert led San Francisco to possibly one of the greatest two-year runs in college basketball. He led the Dons to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956, coaching basketball greats Bill Russell and K.C. Jones. In that span they won 60 consecutive games, the second most in NCAA history. Also making a name for themselves in the coaching ranks is Rick Adelman ( ), Clete Adelman ( ), John Arndt ( ), Richard Baker ( ), David Benaderet ( ) and Bill Donovan ( ), just to name a few. Rick Adelman, who twice coached the Portland Trail Blazers to berths in the NBA Finals and later coached the Golden State Warriors, returned to the NBA after a season s absence on Sept. 17, 1998, when the Sacramento Kings hired him as the franchise s 19th head coach. In two seasons, he molded the Kings into one of the NBA s most exciting teams, leading the league in scoring and making the playoffs both times. Rick Adelman brought a record of into the season, his winning percentage of.615 ranking 16th on the all-time list. In the playoffs, his teams have posted a record. He reached the 300-win mark in 468 games, the seventh-fastest in NBA history. Only Pat Riley (416), Phil Jackson (419), Billy Cunningham (430), K.C. Jones (434), Larry Costello (445) and John Kundla (452) reached that plateau in fewer games. A legendary trio: Jim Needles coached both Phil Woolpert (left) and Pete Newell (right), who went on to lead teams to a national title. Rick s brother, Clete Adelman made a name for himself in the junior college coaching ranks. Clete has coached for more than thirty years, and has been with Mira Costa College since He graduated from Loyola with his degree in English in 1966 and taught high school English and History for 12 years while coaching cross-country and golf along with basketball. He has received seven Pete Newell led Loyola from as a player and went on to coach the Cal Bears to a national championship. coach of the year awards, five at Mira Costa College. In addition to his coaching duties at Mira Costa, he has been Athletic Director for seven years. Donovan, whose 107 wins in eight seasons is the best in LMU history, led the Lions to their first conference title in his final season in Arndt, who replaced Donovan, is third all-time at LMU with 91 wins, coaching the team for seven seasons. Baker replaced Arndt as the teams coach in 1968 and led the Lions for five seasons, earning 55 wins. Benaderet, the last former Lion to coach the program, led the Lions from Keeping the tradition alive are current coaches who are excelling in the profession. Mike Dunlap played for the Lions in and has led Metro State College in Denver, Colo., to a pair of NCAA Division II national titles. Jim Williamson, a Lion from , was successful in his young career in leading Loyola High School to playoff appearances. Williamson is following the footsteps of another Loyola graduate to find success in the high school ranks. Gene Pingatore, who played at LMU from , became a legend in Chicago, coaching such players as Isaiah Thomas. From the high schools to the pros, former Lions have added to the program s winning tradition. Building Champions 55
2 Traditions & Service TIP-OFF DINNER Collegiate basketball teams throughout the nation start basketball season in the middle of October with Madness at Midnight. While practice starts the season, the Loyola Marymount men's basketball team gives the new season its traditional ceremonial start when the team hosts the annual John Montgomery, Kurt Rambis, Adoyah Men's Basketball Tip-Off Miller and Damian Martin at last year s tip-off Dinner. dinner. Head Coach Rodney Tention gives fans a first-hand look to the season as he talks about the team and introduces each member of the squad. The dinner has featured a who s-who of basketball, including 2005 guest speaker Marques Johnson, a former All-American and Fox Sports Net college basketball commentator. The Tip-off dinner began in 2001 with LMU alum and Basketball Hall of Fame member Pete Newell as guest speaker. Since that time the speakers to the annual event have included Paul Sunderland (LMU Alum and basketball announcer), Kurt Rambis (WCC Alum and Lakers assistant) and Bo Kimble (LMU Alum and former All- American). For more information on how to get involved with the dinner, contact Faith Sauerwald at (310) CAMPS AND CLINICS The Loyola Marymount University men s basketball program is heavily invested in the teaching of the game of basketball at all levels. LMU and the men s basketball program have hosted or organized more than a dozen camps, clinics and tournaments that enhance the game of basketball. Among others, the Lions have hosted the Double Pump Best of Summer high school tournament, the Kiki Vandeweghe Individual Summer Camp for NBA players, the Boys Basketball Summer Basketball Camp for Los Angeles youth, and the Coaches Clinic sponsored by SCIBA. For more information on enrolling in the Boys Summer Basketball Camp or on other opportunities contact the Basketball office at: (310) lmuhoops@lmu.edu COMMUNITY SERVICE A vital part in the growth and development of every student-athlete at Loyola Marymount University is community service. The men s basketball team believes that community service is an opportunity to understand the responsibility of volunteerism. Through this community experience, our players come together to realize that life extends beyond the boundaries of a court and beyond the classrooms of our beautiful campus. The motivation is not only to help someone less fortunate, but also to help ourselves learn the potential impact we can have on the communities in which we live. From the Westchester area that is home to the main LMU campus to the downtown Los Angeles location of the Loyola Law School, the community is a vital aspect of the LMU experience. Our student-athletes are basketball players for a percentage of every day. They will be individuals with social responsibility forever. At LMU and as a member of the men s basketball team, they learn much more than the game of basketball they learn life skills and a social conscientious that will stay with them forever. The mission statement of the University and of the LMU athletic department includes the growth of the whole person. The integration of community service into everyday life of the student-athlete develops the whole person. The men s team has a special program where they visit area elementary schools to participate in reading programs, talk to youngsters about staying in school and the importance of reading and education. Furthermore, our players participate in summer camps for youth and in many other different social causes in the greater Los Angeles Area. Loyola Marymount University Athletics 56 One of LMU s core values is community service. Each May the University organizes the program Into the Streets, which gives LMU employees a chance to give back to the community. As a part of the program, the athletic department hosts a half-day sports clinic for area elementary schools. LMU President, Father Robert Lawton (bottom left), is also involved in community service throughout the year. In the fall of 2003 and 2004, the LMU men s basketball team visited the Los Angeles Shriner s Hospital where they spent half the day with the children who are patients at the hospital (above).
3 Lion Spirit LMU CHEER SQUAD The Loyola Marymount University Cheer Squad became the 18th varsity sport sponsored by LMU in the Summer of Serving as a Spirit Squad for men s basketball when the university was known as Loyola, the current cheer team has grown to a service-oriented organization that not only appears and supports all 17 LMU athletic teams and events, but performs community service. The cheer squad has continued to impress with its overall ingame routines with advanced tumbling, stunt and dance performances. In addition to providing support to the teams during the games, the squad will once again perform halftime and timeout routines This year s squad includes: Kristina Alarcon Analee Almeida Denise Carranza Alyse Chong Arianne Cortes Tiffany Deering Malorie Fiore Stephen Guichard Nate Ilejay Kendra Jones Tracie Kogura Ashley Luther Teresa Moore Malorie Oriente-Padilla Coach: Niki Neville LIONPRIDE This organization is the official student booster club of LMU athletics. Seen throughout the athletic season, LionPride has been a major reason for record student attendance the last several years. With more than 650 members this year, LionPride will be a factor at LMU events. Open to all students enrolled at LMU, LionPride offers free admission to all home regular season athletic events, opportunity to participate in ingame promotions, drawings for valuable prizes and much, much more, including the LionPride T-Shirt. In addition, LionPride makes its way to road games thanks to multiple road trips through out the year. With the LionPride in place, many have been led to the Cage. THE CAGE The Cage will enter its fourth season of rocking Gersten Pavilion. Outlined by a fenced in area located at the middle of the student section, the Cage is the center of student support. Receiving national television recognition on Fox Sports Net, ESPN and other Los Angeles area stations, the Cage is growing into the place to be on Game Night. Only the fittest of Lions are in the Cage. PEP BAND In what many consider its first appearance at any LMU athletic event, the LMU Pep Band broke onto the scene late in the season. Bringing energy and atmosphere to Gersten, the Pep Band is the latest addition to making Gersten Pavilion the best place to play and watch basketball in the West Coast Conference. Making up the 28-member band, with more members on the way, are LMU students from all backgrounds. The band is in its fourth year. Building Champions 57

6 Gersten Pavilion Gersten Pavilion, entering its 25th year as the host of LMU's indoor athletic events, is the centerpiece of the LMU athletic complex. Opening in 1981, Gersten Pavilion has become one of the toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference and one of the premier athletic facilities in Southern California. While hosting men's and women's basketball and volleyball, the Pavilion has seen its share of memorable moments in the history of collegiate athletics, including that of the record-breaking men's basketball program at LMU. One of the more memorable moments came as the Lions posted a 16-game winning streak that spanned three seasons from Feb. 25, 1987 through Nov. 28, In that span, the Lions posted a 14-0 mark at home in the season. On Feb. 20, 1988, during the winning streak, Gersten set the attendance record with a standing-room-only crowd of 4,525 in a win over rival Pepperdine. The Pavilion seats 4,156. The Pavilion has also hosted the highest scoring basketball game in NCAA Division I history when Loyola Marymount defeated U.S. International on Jan. 31, In addition, it served as host to the WCC Tournament in 1990 and The Pavilion opened its doors on Jan. 15, 1981 with a men's basketball loss to Santa Clara. The Lions first win came eight days later with a victory against St. Mary's. To this day the Pavilion keeps bringing them in as the season saw two of the largest crowds in school history. In the annual rivalry game against Pepperdine on Jan. 29, 2005, a crowd of 4,302, the fifth largest crowd, saw the Lions hold the Waves to its second lowest point total in four decades with a win. The record held just over two weeks as on Feb. 12, 2005 a crowd of 4,337 saw the Lions drop a heartbreaker to No. 14 Gonzaga, The 63,000-square foot facility boasts a functional design, featuring rounded columns at each corner, separated by mirrored glass. It houses the athletic programs' extensive weight rooms, and top-of-theline training and medical facilities. In December of 2000, a state-of-the-art scoreboard system was put into Gersten Pavilion. The scoreboard includes LionVision, a giant multi-camera videoboard at the south end of the facility. In the Summer of 2001, a new energy saving event lighting system was Loyola Marymount University Athletics 60 installed and the ceiling was repainted white to enhance the on court lighting. Built to accommodate the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the Pavilion served as the host site for the weightlifting competition of the Games. More than 1,000 people were involved with the staging of the event, which attracted the largest number of weightlifting competitors in the history of the Olympics. More than two million people Largest Gersten Pavilion Crowds Crowd Opponent Date Result 4,525 Pepperdine 2/20/88 W, ,465 Pepperdine 2/15/86 L, ,366 St. Mary s 2/3/89 L, ,350 Pepperdine 1/29/89 W, ,337 Gonzaga 2/12/05 L, ,302 Pepperdine 1/29/05 W, ,210 Oklahoma 12/23/89 L, ,156 Santa Clara 2/24/90 W, ,156 San Diego 2/23/90 W, ,156 Pepperdine 2/14/90 W, ,156 St. Mary s 2/1/90 W, ,156 Portland 1/20/90 W, ,156 UCSB 12/9/89 W, ,156 Santa Clara 2/12/88 W, were brought into the Pavilion through television, radio, newspapers and wire services that attended the competition. Prior to the Olympics, Gersten was the site of the McDonald's Gymnastics Classic in 1983, featuring the best male and female gymnasts from the United States and the former Soviet Union. In 1991, the Pavilion was the venue for the men and women's volleyball and boxing preliminaries at the U.S. Olympic Festival. It has been host to top basketball camps in the country, hosting LMU alumnus Pete Newell and his Big Man's Camp for NBA players. It has served as one of the official practice homes of the L.A. Lakers, L.A. Clippers and currently the L.A. Sparks. The Pavilion was named in honor of Albert Gersten, father of LMU regent Albert Gersten, Jr., a 1974 LMU graduate. The Gersten family was the largest single donor to the construction project.
