Sean Lampley had his fourth double-double of the season and the 25th of his career when he finished with season highs in points (27) and rebounds (12) at Washington State. With a 12-2 record since Dec. 5, Cal is in the midst of its best 14- game stretch since the Bears also went 12-2 from Jan. 27-March 10, If Cal can defeat Washington, the Bears 13-2 mark would be their best 15-game run since going 14-2 from Dec. 10, 1993 through Feb. 10, That squad, by the way, featured All-Americans Jason Kidd and Lamond Murray. After losing four straight overtime games heading into this season, the Bears are 2-0 in overtime this year, beating Mississippi State, 83-76, to start the season and edging Washington State, 75-71, Thursday. The WSU victory was Cal s first OT triumph on the road since defeating Arizona, 98-83, on Jan. 13, 1994 in Tucson. Despite getting little recognition in the national polls, Cal is 22nd in the RPI and 21st in the Sagarin ratings. Cal s 13-5 record is the team s best after 18 games since the 1997 squad went 16-5 in Ben Braun s first year in Berkeley. Sean Lampley has scored at least 20 points in five of Cal s first six Pac-10 games. He now has 1,510 career points to rank sixth on the Bears all-time list. Despite coming off the bench, Joe Shipp has reached double figures in six of his last eight games, including 21 points vs. Oregon State and 15 vs. both Arizona State and Washington State. A native of Chicago, Braun played one year of basketball at Wisconsin-LaCrosse before transferring to Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a teaching degree in English with a minor in African-American studies in He received his master s degree in guidance and counseling from Siena Heights. Washington Scouting Report A Look at Washington (8-11, 2-5) Washington is coming off loss to No. 1 Stanford Thursday. Last weekend, they split in Oregon, beating the Ducks, 72-71, in overtime in Eugene and losing, 63-56, at Oregon State. UW has six players who have made at least 10 three-pointers this season, led by 23 from Bryan Brown, but the Huskies are shooting under 30 percent from behind the arc. Cal-Washington Series History Washington holds a series lead. Last year, both teams won on the road, with Cal claiming a victory in Seattle and UW edging the Bears, 54-52, in Berkeley. UW Head Coach Bob Bender Bob Bender is in his eighth year at Washington, having led the Huskies to two NCAA Tournaments and two NITs. The Bears seemed to be on their way to an easy victory when they took a lead 13 minutes into the first half. But WSU closed the gap to at the break. The Cougars then led much of the second half and went up with 10:34 to go. However, Cal limited WSU to just two three-pointers the rest of regulation and the teams entered overtime tied at 65-all. In the extra period, Lampley scored Cal s first six points to give the Bears a lead. Shantay Legans and Joe Shipp both sank two free throws each in the final 14 seconds to clinch the win. The victory was Cal s first OT win in Pullman after three previous overtime losses to the Cougars. Shipp finished the game with 15 points off the bench, while Legans had 12 points and a career-high-tying six boards. Bears Off to Best Pac-10 Start since 1996 At 4-2 in conference play, Cal is off to its best start in the Pac-10 since the Bears began 6-1 in However, Cal was later forced to forfeit five of those wins for use of an eligible player. Excluding the 96 season, the Bears last had a 4-2 league record in 1994 on their way to an 8-2 beginning.

As of Friday morning, Cal is 21st in the Sagarin ratings, while the Bears are 22nd in the RPI. In the AP poll, two teams the Bears beat are getting significantly more attention. Cal defeated Georgia, 85-64, Dec. 21, but the Bulldogs have 29 votes, while South Florida, which lost at Cal, 79-69, received 15 votes. Turnovers Key to Cal Victories Over the course of the season, one statistic has emerged has a key area in determining Cal s results. In the Bears 13 wins, Cal is +5.0 in turnover margin, but in their five losses, the margin is 3.8. The only time the Bears have had a positive margin in a loss was at Arizona when Cal had 19 turnovers to UA s 21, while they have had a negative margin in a win just twice vs. Oregon (18-15) and South Florida (23-18). The Bears have had less than 10 turnovers in a game three different times 7 in their opening win over Mississippi State, 5 in their victory over Georgia and 6 against Oregon State. In all, the Cal averages only 13.8 turnovers per game while forcing 16.6 for a margin of Home Streak Ties for 5th Longest in School History With its victory over South Florida last Saturday, Cal extended its homecourt winning streak to 13 consecutive games, tying for the fifth longest in school history. The Bears closed out the season with three straight victories in Haas Pavilion, and they are 10-0 in Berkeley this year. The home string ties for the 13th longest current streak in the country and is the longest for Cal since a 23-game streak on Pete Newell Court ended with a loss to Penn in December The school record is 26 games from Dec. 27, 1958 to Dec. 16, In addition, Cal is also 16-1 against non-conference opponents in Haas Pavilion since the facility opened last fall. Lampley has led the Bears in scoring 14 times in 18 games this year and has averaged 20.6 ppg over the past 11 games. Also sixth on the Cal career rebounding chart, Lampley is the first player to rank among the school s Top 10 in both categories since Brian Hendrick in If he maintains his current scoring pace, Lampley would overtake Lamond Murray s career scoring record by the end of the year. Eleven times this year Cal has made more free throws than its opponents have attempted, and the Bears are a perfect 11-0 in those contests. Toss in Cal s victory over Yale when the FTM and FTA were even (Cal: 12-15, Yale: 8-12), and the record goes to The only time Cal won a game this year without such a free throw difference came in the season-opening triumph over Mississippi State (Cal: 7-10, MSU: 12-16). For the season, Cal has made 301 free throws, compared to 291 attempts for its opponents. Bears Possibly on Best Shooting Binge Ever Starting with a win over Albany Dec. 11, Cal has shot at least 50 percent from the floor in 10 of its last 12 games. The only games the Bears did not reach the break-even point were at Stanford (42.9%) and at Washington State (39.7%). Prior to the Stanford contest, Cal was at 50 percent or higher nine consecutive times, from Dec. 11 (Albany) through Jan. 13 (Oregon State). Records showing field goal percentage are only available back to the season, but in the previous 41 years, the Bears never went eight consecutive games at 50 percent or better. The last time Cal went as long as seven straight games was from Dec , The Bears have put together four of their five best shooting performances since the start of the New Year: 60.5% vs. South Florida Jan. 20, 58.3% at Arizona State Jan. 6, 56.9% at Arizona Jan. 4 and 53.8% vs. Oregon State Jan. 13. Lampley Displays All-Around Ability Sean Lampley gets much of his notice for being Cal s leading scorer and rebounder, but one area that should not be overlooked is his assists. The only player in the Pac-10 to rank among the league leaders in points, rebounds and assists, Lampley is averaging 3.3 apg this season. He had 10 assists to go with 25 points in Cal s win over Georgia Dec. 21 for the second points-assists double-double of his career (also vs. Davidson on Jan. 2, 2000). And in Cal s victory over Oregon, he paced the Bears in all three categories with 23 points, 10 boards and seven assists. Cal is 5-1 when Lampley has at least four assists in a game, with the only loss being a three-point decision at Arizona. Along with Roy Fisher and Doug True, he is one of just three players at Cal to accumulate at least 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 200 assists. Reserves Supply Key Support Heading into the season, Ben Braun believed one of the strengths of this year s squad would be its depth. And so far, that has been just the case. Through the first 18 games of the year, Cal s reserves are averaging 25.3 ppg, or 34.2 percent of the Bears scoring output. Leading the way are junior center Solomon Hughes and sophomore forward Joe Shipp. Hughes is third on the squad with 8.7 ppg and is shooting a Pac-10-best 63.2 percent from the floor, while Shipp averages 8.5 ppg, including a 21-point effort vs. Oregon State Jan. 13 and 15 points at WSU Jan. 25. In Pac-10 games, Shipp (12.5 ppg) and Hughes (10.2 ppg) rate second and third, respectively, on Cal s scoring list. Legans, Forehan-Kelly Give Cal 3-Point Punch Starting guards Shantay Legans and Ryan Forehan-Kelly give Cal the one of the best 1-2 punches in school history from three-point range, with the players ranking atop Cal s career list in terms of percentage. Legans is 28-for-65 from long range this season (43.1%) and ranks second on the career chart at 42.9%, just behind Billy Dreher (43.1%). Forehan-Kelly, who is 23-for-59 this year (39.0%), comes in at No. 4 at 41.2 percent. He made 5-of-6 treys against Yale Dec. 29, then shot 4-for-6 from behind the arc at Arizona Jan. 4. Legans has done his part by sinking 18 of his last 36 threepoint attempts. Legans also owns the school freshman three-point mark, established last year when he shot 42.7 percent from long range (47-110). Cal Career Three-Point Percentage Leaders 1. Billy Dreher ( ) % 2. Gates has already taken his GRE exam and is planning to attend Cal s Graduate School of Education next season. As a high school senior, Gates was the Chicago All-Academic Player of the Year at Whitney Young HS in Cal s Shipp Has Come In with Big Scoring Efforts For sophomore forward Joe Shipp, Christmas break couldn t have come at a better time. Over the course of Cal s first nine games (through Dec. 23), Shipp was averaging only 6.3 ppg on 32.1 percent shooting from the floor, including 31.3 percent from threepoint range. But starting with Cal s Dec. 29 contest vs. Yale, Shipp has almost doubled each of those numbers. In the Bears last nine games, he has averaged 11.4 ppg while shooting 60.7 percent (37-61) overall and 40.0 percent (12-30) from behind the arc. Shipp has reached double figures four times in six Pac-10 games, including 15 points at Arizona State and Washington State and a season-best 21 points vs. Oregon State. Hughes a Sure Thing off the Bench Junior center Solomon Hughes scored 14 points in Cal s opener against Mississippi State, but struggled in the Bears next three games, averaging just 1.0 ppg during the stretch. But starting with Cal s win over Cleveland State Dec. 5 when he scored 10 points, Hughes has been a consistent force coming off the bench, averaging 10.0 ppg and reaching double figures 10 times in the last 14 games. From the field, Hughes is shooting a Pac-10-best 63.2 percent (67-106). In Cal s win at Arizona State Jan. 6, he was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor on his way to a season-best 15 points, just one off his career high set against USC last March. Hughes also had 14 points against Oregon State. On Cal s career list, Hughes ranks second to Mark McNamara at 56.4 percent. Cal Career Field Goal Percentage Leaders 1. Mark McNamara ( ) Solomon Hughes (1999- ) Alfred Grigsby ( ) Leonard Taylor ( ) Cal Rebounds from 1-3 Start Since a 1-3 start to the year, Cal has gone 12-2, with the only two losses being on the road to preseason No. 1 Arizona and current No. 1 Stanford. Included during the stretch was a seven-game winning streak from Dec that tied for the team s longest under head coach Ben Braun. Prior to the hot streak, the Bears shot just 40.1 percent from the floor and scored only 63.8 ppg during the first four games of the season. But beginning with a win over Cleveland State, the numbers have improved tremendously to 49.9 percent from the field and to 76.9 ppg over the last 14 contests. Braun Settles on Lineup This Season With five freshmen playing key roles for the Bears last year, head coach Ben Braun mixed and matched lineups all season. In all, 12 players were used in 15 different starting lineups. But with a more experienced group in , Braun has limited the changes as players have come to accept their roles on the team. Entering Saturday s Washington game, Cal has started the same unit 10 straight times, more than twice as long any group remained together last season. Two players Sean Lampley and Shantay Legans have started all 18 games, while two others Ryan Forehan-Kelly and Nick Vander Laan have 15 starts to their credit. Bears Spread Scoring throughout Team A quick look at Cal s statistics shows that Sean Lampley dominates the scoring list with the other players in a supporting role. And although Lampley leads the squad with 18.8 ppg, more than 8 ppg more than No. 2 scorer Shantay Legans, a closer analysis reveals that the Bears are getting an all-around effort. Cal had at least four players reach double figures in seven consecutive games from Dec. 11 to Jan. 6 with seven players contributing to the effort. The Bears even had six players score at least 10 points in their win over Albany Dec. 11. As a comparison, Cal did not have four doubledigit scorers in any of its last five games and accomplished the feat only twice in its last 11 contests last year. Overall, eight players have scored in double figures 62 times, with six players boasting at least six 10-point games. Next to Lampley s 16 double-digit outings, Solomon Hughes has 11, Legans nine, Ryan Forehan-Kelly and Joe Shipp seven each, and Brian Wethers six. Overall, seven players average at least 6.8 ppg. Miscellaneous Notes Cal had three players Sean Lampley, Solomon Hughes and Nick Vander Laan attend the Pete Newell Big Man Camp over the summer with 20 blocks this season, Solomon Hughes has moved into fourth on Cal s career list with 81; next up is Brian Hendrick, who had 98 blocks from
