The 2004 awards are her third by the coaches and her second by the SC Media Association. STAYING ALIVE: Furman has had a lot of success staying alive in the Southern Conference Tournament, winning two, making seven finals, and posting an overall record in championship play. In 20 years of SoCon Tournament play, Furman has lost its opening game eight times, and only four times since Furman s last opening round defeat was a decision to Davidson in the season. The Lady Paladins were overall that year with a 10-8, fifth place showing in league play. SIGNIFICANT LEADERSHIP: Furman s most recent starting lineup features a wealth of experience and leadership. Orion Wake, Kim Lawrence, and Deshara Shealey are all seniors who have combined for 226 career starts, junior Katie Roach who has played 85 game as a Lady Paladin, and sophomore Lauren Few who has 54 collegiate games under her belt. SEWING UP SECOND: Furman ended the regular season with a victory over Elon, which wrapped up second place for the Lady Paladins. Furman s last second place finish was , when the Lady Paladins defeated Davidson, ETSU, and UNCG to win the SoCon Tournament title and earn the program s second ever bid to the NCAA Tournament. SENIOR CEREMONY: Since Lady Paladin basketball began playing for a conference title in , Furman has posted a 13-7 record on senior day and has won six of its last seven senior day games - all against league competition. SO LONG SENIORS: All three members of the Lady Paladins 2004 senior class have played the entirety of their collegiate careers at Furman and Orion Wake is in her fifth season as a Lady Paladin. Between the three of them, they have compiled 226 starts, 3,295 points,1,905 rebounds, 89 victories and a.612 winning percentage over a five year period. BREAK EVEN GAME/30TH WIN: Furman s victory over Appalachian State on Feb. 7 guaranteed the Lady Paladins at least a.500 season and marked the 30th career win by Furman coach Sam Dixon, now in his second season at the helm of the Lady Paladin program. BLOWOUT VICTORY: After losing to UNC Greensboro on Jan. 3, 2004, the Lady Paladins rebounded to take an decision on Jan. 31. The 47-point victory was the largest of Sam Dixon s career here at Furman and was the Lady Paladins biggest victory since a 51-point, win over Winthrop on Jan. 30, It was also Furman s biggest conference win in 19 years of competition in the Southern Conference. LAST TIME OUT: Junior forward Jen Nadalin recorded her third doubledouble of the year while Lauren Few added 13 points and Tommi Paris contributed 10 in a victory over the Elon Phoenix. Furman took a lead into the halftime locker room, then scored 45 second period points to outdistance the Phoenix by 30. CHANGES COMING ON: Furman has posted victories in 13 of its last 17 games. Compared to the first 10 games, in which the Lady Paladins posted a 4-6 record, Furman is rebounding better (42.9 to 43.5), and turning the ball over less (22.5 to 16.5). The most startling number has to do with the Lady Paladin defense, however, which gave up 66.7 points per game in the first 10 contests, and has given up a stingy 54.3 per game in the last 17.

Natalie Cleckley ( 91) holds the Lady Paladin record for career rebounds, with 1,102. THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY: While Furman leads the Southern Conference statistics in field goal percentage defense (.369), steals (12.12), and turnover margin (+3.19), the Lady Paladins are a dismal eighth in free throw percentage (.654), eighth in three-point percentage (.288), and 10th in three-pointers made (3.15). IS 30 SO MUCH TO ASK?: Furman s defense is so stifling the Lady Paladins usually just need a little offense to get a W. In fact, Furman is off to a 12-3 record this season in games in which the Lady Paladins score 30 or more first half points. When the Lady Paladins can t reach the 30 mark by the break the record falls to 5-7. WRITING HER NAME IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Senior forward Kim Lawrence scored eight points in the Lady Paladin game against Western Carolina (1/7) to become the 15th woman in school history to score 1,000 points in her career. Lawrence entered the game with the Catamounts seven points away from 1,000 and earned the coveted mark on a jump shot with 6:00 left in the game. Now Lawrence has moved into fourth on Furman s all-time steals list, with 223, and is 26 away from Lucy Dunn s third-place mark of 249. LINEUP SHAKEDOWN: After starting the same five players the first 10 games of the year, coach Sam Dixon made a slight alteration entering the Wofford game and claimed five victories in seven games with the new lineup. Another change resulted in a 7-1 start with Roach and Lawrence at forward, Wake at center, and Paris and Shealey in the backcourt. Against Davidson, Dixon tried out his fourth starting lineup of the year (Lawrence, Roach, Wake, Few, Shealey) and has a 1-1 mark to show for it. PRESSURE, PRESSURE: Furman full-court press and ball harrassment has forced every single opponent this season to make 15 or more turnovers. Holy Cross has the most, with 31, while UTC had the fewest, with 15. When Furman takes care of the ball and commits 15 or fewer turnovers, the Lady Paladins are 6-1. TENACIOUS D: The Lady Paladins are giving up just 58.9 (second in the SoCon) points per game to their opponents this season. Entering today s game, the Lady Paladins are 12-2 when allowing 60 or fewer points - Furman s only missteps in this situation were a loss to the Big East s Providence in the season opener and a loss at Davidson. PROPHETIC FIRST HALF: So far this season the Lady Paladins have not staged any big comebacks, but they haven t had any serious second half tanks either. In fact, Furman is 14-1 when leading at the half and 0-8 when trailing at the half. In the four games that have been tied at the break the Lady Paladins are 3-1 with the lone loss to Clemson. BLOWOUTS ONLY, PLEASE: The Lady Paladins are a surpising 2-7 in games decided by 10 points or less. In games with a margin of 11 or more points, the Lady Paladin record improves to 15-3.

SHOOTING HELPS, BUT NOT A MUST: While every team would like to shoot 50% or better from the field in every game of the season, Furman has accomplished this feat only once in 27 games. The good news is the Lady Paladins are 11-5 when shooting between 40-49% from the field and have even won five games (5-5) when shooting less than 40%. MONDAY, MONDAY: Some teams may have manic Mondays, but the Lady Paladins seem to enjoy the first day of the work week. In fact, Furman is a perfect 6-0 on Monday, in contrast to a dismal 1-2 when playing on Sunday. Along the same lines, the Lady Paladins are a solid 10-3 in night games (starting at or after 5 p.m.), but only 7-7 in games played earlier in the day. The Lady Paladins are currently 15-2 when the bench scores more than 20, while the record falls to 2-8 with a bench total of 20 or less. In addition, six Lady Paladins are averaging 5.0 or more points per game with Tommi Paris, Kim Lawrence and Jen Nadalin all above 9.0. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Furman owns a (.734) record within the friendly confines of Timmons Arena - the Lady Paladin home since In and , the Lady Paladins won 10 games at home in Timmons and on December 2, 2001, recorded an historic victory over intrastate rival Clemson of the ACC.
