4 The ACC Tournament 189 TOURNAMENT NOTES A Family Affair Clemson s Mahaffey quartet hold all existing records for brother participation in the ACC Tournament... the four LaGrange, Ga., brothers played in nine of the 10 ACC Tournaments between 1960 and Tom was the first ( ) followed by Donnie ( ), Randy ( ) and finally Richie ( & 1970)... Richie injured a shoulder early in the 1969 season, was redshirted and missed the 1969 tournament... Tom and Donnie played together under Press Maravich in 1962 while Randy and Richie were a Tiger twosome under Bobby Roberts in all four Mahaffeys are among Clemson s top 10 career rebound leaders. Buzz Bombs Away Virginia s All-America guard Buzz Wilkinson set an ACC Tournament record when he attempted 66 shots in a first round loss to Duke in the 1954 tournament... the Pineville, W.Va., junior scored a game-high 42 points hitting on 13 of 44 from the floor and 16 of 22 from the charity stripe... in his three career ACC Tournament games, Wilkinson averaged 39 field goal attempts and 17 free throw attempts per game. WRAL to the Rescue The 1960 Tournament featured two firsts: for the first time since the ACC was formed in 1953, there was not a top 10 team in the national rankings - North Carolina was No. 16 and Wake Forest No on the Wednesday prior to the Tournament there was a seveninch snow fall and for the first time there was live television with all of the Thursday games done by Channel 5 (WRAL) of Raleigh, arranged as an emergency. First The University of Maryland had the first black basketball players in the ACC... Billy Jones of Towson, Md., and Pete Johnson of Seat Pleasant, Md., both received scholarships and played for the school s 1965 freshmen team... Jones, a 6-1 guard, became the first black player in Tournament history, scoring three points in 16 minutes in a first round loss to North Carolina in the 1966 tournament... Johnson, also a 6-1 guard, redshirted his sophomore year before becoming a three-year starter in Johnson became Maryland s No. 5 all-time scorer at the time (987 points) under coaches Bud Millikan and Frank Fellows. The Iron Ten Only once in ACC tournament history has the starting five players on both teams played the entire game. The 1969 semifinal game between Duke and South Carolina featured the Blue Devils Steve Vandenberg, Fred Lind, Randy Denton, Dave Golden and Dick DiVenzio of Duke against the Gamecocks Bobby Cremins, Tom Owens, John Ribock, John Roche and Billy Walsh of South Carolina. Duke won the game, The Talented Ten The 1974 title game between N.C. State and Maryland featured six players - the Wolfpack s David Thompson, Tom Burleson and Monte Towe and Maryland s Tom McMillen, John Lucas and Len Elmore - who earned All-America honors during their collegiate careers. Those six players, along with Maryland s Tom Roy, Moe Howard and Owen Brown and N.C. State s Phil Spence were future NBA draft picks. Burleson, Elmore, McMillen, Thompson and Lucas were first round draft picks. Thompson and Lucas were the first players selected in the 1975 and 1976 drafts, respectively.
